Hollywood Studios –Family Hybrid – One Day Standard
The Family Hybrid easyPlan is intended for use by families that would like to split up a couple
of times throughout the day in order to maximize the fun for different age groups. If your group
consists of very young children, older children, teenagers, and adults, it’s likely that not everyone
will want to or be able to experience the same attractions. Because interests can be so different,
this Plan is more of a “guide” than the others. Below, I will list the attractions that may appeal to
specific age groups, along with potential alternatives that are geographically nearby. The goal is
to keep the group together for as much of the day as possible and split up only when necessary.
For example, most kids over the age of seven won’t enjoy Disney Jr. Live on Stage much, while
a four year old will love it. Instead of Disney Jr., the older kids and an adult might head to
Tower of Terror and then meet up with the rest of the group to ride Great Movie Ride.
Unfortunately at the Studios, there are only a few attractions that will appeal specifically to older
members of the group. There are a lot more attractions geared towards the younger set. Here’s
an overview:
Specific Attractions That May Not Appeal to Older Kids, Teens, and Adults
Beauty and the Beast Live on Stage – This live Broadway-style show may not appeal to certain
people, particularly teenage and adult males.
Character Meet and Greets – Some people have no interest in character meet and greets. Since
it’s best to visit characters early in the morning, there is usually time for those that aren’t
interested to visit Tower of Terror, Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster, and potentially Star Tours.
Disney Channel Rocks – This scheduled show generally doesn’t appeal to anyone unfamiliar
with the shows and songs included. It can be replaced with most any attraction that lasts about
20 minutes. It’s also a good opportunity to send someone for snacks.
Disney Jr. Live on Stage – This show is geared towards preschoolers and young school-age
children. Because it can get crowded in the afternoon due to limited space, visiting it in the
morning makes the most sense. Have those uniterested in watching head to Tower of Terror and
Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster.
Honey I Shrunk the Kids Movie Set Adventure – This playground area is geared towards kids
ages nine and younger. Consider having the others visit a stage show that doesn’t appeal to the
younger set, like Lights, Motors, Action! or Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular. Star Tours is
also a good alternative.
Journey into Narnia: Prince Caspian – This attraction should be skipped unless there is a
specific reason you want to experience it.
Voyage of the Little Mermaid – This attraction doesn’t appeal to some older boys, in particular.
Consider an additional ride on Star Tours with FASTPASS or one of the thrill rides. Walt
Disney: One Man’s Dream is also recommended and nearby.
Specific Attractions That May Not Appeal to Young Children (Or They May Not Be Tall
Enough to Ride)
Great Movie Ride – There’s only one scary scene – the Alien scene – but it may be off-putting
enough for some kids to stay away. Consider scheduling a kid-friendly stage show like Disney
Channel Rocks or Beauty and the Beast instead.
Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster – This is a fast, dark, roller coaster that kids may not be ready to
experience. Substitute character meet and greets, Disney Jr. Live on Stage, Disney Channel
Rocks, or another appropriate attraction.
Tower of Terror – This is probably the most obviously “scary” ride in Disney World. A lot of
kids will be scared to ride. Replace it with the same attractions as Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster.
Star Tours – Most kids will want to ride this, but may not be tall enough or may suffer from
motion sickness. The easiest thing to do is substitute it with character meet and greets or Honey
I Shrunk the Kids Movie Set Adventure.
Walt Disney One Man’s Dream: This “museum-like” exhibit may not appeal much to younger
kids. Consider taking them to a meet and greet or a nearby attraction that doesn’t appeal to the
adults in the group, like Voyage of the Little Mermaid.
Keeping the Group Together
Luckily, most of the attractions at Hollywood Studios appeal to all ages or will at least be
tolerated by most visitors. In most scenarios, you should be able to stay together for most of the
day, with only one or two hours of separation in the morning while the older kids and adults ride
the thrill rides with height requirements.
Jedi Training Academy Participation
See the Hollywood Studios touring overview for more information about signing up for Jedi
Training Academy. If you do sign up, you’ll need to plan your day around the show and will
probably not be able to ride Toy Story Mania in the standby line with a short wait in the
morning. Try to have at least one person visit Toy Story Mania to collect FASTPASSes while
another adult and the child participating in Jedi Training go immediately to sign up after the
Studios opens. Because you won’t know the specific show time that your child will be
participating in, you’ll need to maintain a lot of flexibility with your day.
The Break
As written, this Plan has you leave the Studios around 1:15pm for a break back at your
resort/hotel/condo and a return around 4:30pm. This is an essential part of a successful Plan
because it will allow the kids to rest up for the evening and you’ll miss the busiest and hottest
part of the day. You may want to elongate your break, but pay attention to show times and make
sure you arrive in time to see what you want to see. If the Studios is closing at 7pm or you don’t
want to see Fantasmic, you may want to do the Half-Day easyPlan that tours through 4pm or so
in the afternoon rather than taking the travel time for a break. Because the Parade begins at 3pm,
we plan to skip it. Otherwise, we would have to wait until after the Parade to take our break or
return by 2:30pm to see it, which doesn’t make logistical sense in most scenarios. Consider the
9am – 4pm easyPlan or a late arrival if you want to see the Parade. You should be able to
substitute the morning portion of this easyPlan, where most of the splitting up occurs, with the
morning of any of the other easyPlans.
Additional FASTPASSes
The easyPlan specifically only calls for you to collect one set of FASTPASSes for Toy Story
Mania. You’re welcome to collect a second set for Toy Story Mania, but you will want to do so
by 10:30am at the latest or you risk them running out. Ideally, you would collect a second set
right after Disney Jr. Live on Stage at 10am. The return time for the second set for Toy Story
Mania will likely be around 3pm-5pm. If the older kids and adults would like to ride Rock ‘n’
Roller Coaster, Tower of Terror, and Star Tours later in the day, have them collect FASTPASSes
as well. Also remember that you can use anyone’s tickets to collect FASTPASS, even if they
won’t be the ones riding. For example, if you have four people in your group and only two want
to ride Star Tours, you can use all four tickets to collect four FASTPASSes. The two people that
want to ride can then use those four FASTPASSes to ride twice consecutively or with a break in
between. As far as FASTPASS availability is concerned – they run out in this order from first to
last – Toy Story Mania (usually by noon), Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster (in the early or late afternoon,
depending on crowds), Tower of Terror (usually plentiful throughout the day), and Star Tours
(usually plentiful throughout the day). Focus on Toy Story Mania and Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster.
Variable Fantasmic Start Times and No Fantasmic
As written, this easyPlan concludes around 7:00pm with dinner or 6:15pm without, which is just
about perfect for a Fantasmic that begins between 7:30pm and 8:30pm. For an earlier Fantasmic,
you’ll need to cut out some attractions or put off dinner for after Fantasmic. For a Fantasmic that
begins later, you’ll have an opportunity to add additional attractions in the afternoon or evening
or enjoy a lengthier table service dinner.
If Fantasmic isn’t scheduled and there’s nothing else special going on in the evening, crowds
usually begin to dissipate after the 3pm Parade. Wait times at the major attractions will only go
down from 5pm through close. You may very well find most attractions are “walk-ons” in the
final hour of operation if the overall crowd level is low and Hollywood Studios is a
recommended Park. If this is the case, plan to revisit the major attractions an hour before close
and save Toy Story Mania for the very end of the night. If Fantasmic is scheduled, crowds stay
heavy throughout the evening due to the number of people staying for the show.
What the A and B Mean
This easyPlan sets up two groups. The “A” group includes the younger kids and at least one
adult or chaperone. The “B” group is the older kids/adults. For example, if you see 8A and 8B
at two separate attractions, it means the group is splitting up for that step. If the next step is
simply “9,” it means that the group meets back to experience that attraction together. As written,
the easyPlan is designed so that neither group will have to wait around long for the other group
before moving on to the next attraction. It will be easiest to meet up at the entrance of the next
attraction that will be experienced together.
So it’s easier to read, the steps that are broken up into an “A” and “B” are in red.
The Attractions in Order:
Arrival: Arrive at Hollywood Studios 30 minutes prior to opening. Have one person from
your party collect all theme park tickets and move to the front of the pack on Hollywood
Boulevard, prepared to head straight to Toy Story Mania.
1. Collect FASTPASSes for Toy Story Mania. Ideally, have your fastest member collect the
group’s theme park tickets and head straight to Toy Story Mania’s FASTPASS line (this person
is known as the FASTPASS runner), which is located before the attraction entrance on the right
side. There will be a single line for all FASTPASS machines and cast members will be set up at
each FASTPASS machine to put your tickets through (they’ll put one ticket or 100 tickets
through, they don’t care). Most everyone present at 9am will also be headed to Toy Story Mania
and cast members will be present in front of the entrance to walk the masses towards the
attraction. The rest of the group can meet across from the Toy Story Mania entrance.
2. Once the FASTPASS runner meets the rest of the group, continue immediately to the standby
entrance to ride Toy Story Mania.
3A. Have the group that includes the young kids see the 9:40am Disney Jr. Live on Stage
Show. It’s located in the Animation Courtyard. Walk back the way you came and take a left
past the entrance to Voyage of the Little Mermaid, into the Animation Courtyard. The entrance
to Disney Jr. is on the right side, about half way into the Courtyard area. If you’re running
behind, skip to Step 4A and return for the 10:30am show.
3B. Have the older kids and adults exit Toy Story Mania and head back the way you came
toward Mickey’s Sorcerer’s Hat. Continue walking back toward the main entrance, only take a
left onto Sunset Boulevard after passing Hollywood Brown Derby Restaurant and the entrance to
Starring Rolls Café. Head to the end of Sunset Boulevard, passing Tower of Terror, to ride
Rock ‘N’ Roller Coaster in the standby line. The posted wait time will likely be inflated this
early in the morning – don’t worry.
4A. For the group that includes the young kids, We have about an hour for Character Meet
and Greets. Many of the characters in the Animation Courtyard and around the Studios begin
appearing at 10am and lines are always shortest in the early morning. I recommend heading into
the Animation Building to meet Sorcerer Mickey, along with whatever other characters around
the Park you wish to meet. Check your Times Guide for exact times and locations. To enter the
Animation Courtyard, enter the gift shop located on the far right of the long building in the back
of Animation Courtyard. Continue through the back exit of the gift shop and continue into the
large Animation building. Check your Times Guide to see about possible Meet and Greets near
Mama Melrose Ristorante Italiano and Pixar Place as well.
4B. Have the adults head back the way you came to ride the Tower of Terror in the standby
line. The entrance is located up the walkway that runs outside Tower of Terror, right in front of
you as you walk back toward Sunset Boulevard. We bypass it initially because waits build faster
at Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster.
5A. Continue meeting characters in Animation Courtyard and around the Park. There
should be characters in front of Mickey’s Sorcerer’s Hat as well.
5B. Have the adults exit Sunset Boulevard and head toward Mickey’s Sorcerer’s Hat. Star Tours
is located in Echo Lake. Head down the path outside American Idol Experience, directly to the
left of Mickey’s Sorcerer’s Hat. Continue past Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular and Backlot
Express Quick Service to Star Tours. Ride Star Tours in the standby line unless the wait
exceeds 15 minutes. If it does, collect FASTPASSes and return later in the day or ride if
you’re willing to wait.
6A. Have everyone that is interested see Voyage of the Little Mermaid. It’s located in
Animation Courtyard across from the entrance to Disney Jr. Live on Stage. If you’re not sure
where to go, continue back to Mickey’s Sorcerer’s Hat and look diagonally to the right.
Animation Courtyard is right there underneath the high archway.
6B. Have the adults and older kids that aren’t interested in Voyage of the Little Mermaid
head to Walt Disney One Man’s Dream or potentially another attraction of interest. One
Man’s Dream is an interesting exhibit that follows Walt Disney’s life and includes an
informative film at the end. It’s absolutely worth experiencing for anyone interested in how the
theme parks came about. With the film, it should take about 30 minutes to enjoy, which is the
same amount of time that Voyage of the Little Mermaid will likely take. Walt Disney One
Man’s Dream is located on the way to Pixar Place from behind Mickey’s Sorcerer’s Hat or
Animation Courtyard. As you walk toward the entrance to Toy Story Mania, you’ll see doors on
the right that lead into the exhibit. If you’ve come to Toy Story Mania or Journey into Narnia
then you’ve walked to far.
7. Ride the Great Movie Ride. The entrance is located in the theater directly behind Mickey’s
Sorcerer’s Hat. There is one scene that may frighten very young children, but most are fine.
Consider heading to a family-friendly stage show or other attraction if you’re worried.
8. Have lunch. You’re welcome to head wherever you like. As written, we’re headed to Sunset
Ranch Market, which is a collection of quick service eateries on Sunset Boulevard, just before
the entrance to Tower of Terror on the left side. Check your Times Guide to see which quick
service eateries will be open this evening. Toy Story Pizza Planet and others may be closing
before you’re ready to eat. If this is the case, consider heading to one of the quick services
closing early and return to Sunset Ranch Market for dinner instead.
9A. Have the members of the group interested in watching Beauty and the Beast Live on
Stage head there now. The Theater is located on Sunset Boulevard, directly across the street
from Sunset Ranch Market. We’ll want to find our seats no later than 12:30pm to secure good
seats together.
9B. Have the members of the group interested in watching Indiana Jones Epic Stunt
Spectacular head there now. The Theater is located across from the entrance to American Idol
Experience in Echo Lake. Head back out to Mickey’s Sorcerer’s Path and continue walking to
the path to the left of the Hat. Indiana Jones is on your left. We’ll want to arrive no later than
12:45pm to secure good seats together.
10. It should be about 1:15pm, which means it’s time for our break. We plan to return by
4:15pm for Lights, Motors, Action! Extreme Stunt Show.
11. Return by 4pm if possible and no later than 4:15pm. We’re planning to see the 4:30pm
Lights, Motors, Action! Extreme Stunt Show. If this doesn’t hold any interest with your
group, you can skip it and replace it with another attraction or hold off on returning until 5pm or
so. The young kids may prefer to see Disney Channel Rocks, which takes place at the base of
Mickey’s Sorcerer’s Hat around the same time. Lights, Motors is located in the very back of
Hollywood Studios at the end of Streets of America. The easiest way to get there is to walk
straight to Mickey’s Sorcerer’s Hat and take a left toward Star Tours. Continue past Star Tours
and take a left onto the Streets of America. If you turn too soon and end up in front of Muppet
Vision 3D, take a right through the opening and then a left onto Streets of America. Continue
walking all the way down to the end and you’ll see the large stadium and Lights, Motors, Action!
Extreme Stunt Show sign out to your left. Continue through the turnstiles to the right of the sign
and walk to the seating area. It’s about a 35 minute show.
12. Exit Lights, Motors, Action and take a left up past Studio Catering Company quick service.
You’ll see the large seating section to the right as you pass it. Continue past the entrance to the
Backlot Tour on your left and into Pixar Place. Ride Toy Story Mania with the FASTPASSes
collected earlier in the day.
13. Exit Toy Story Mania and take a right back the way you came. The entrance to Backlot Tour
will be on your right across from Studio Catering Company and the Coca Cola stand. We
bypassed it in Step 12 because some people exiting Lights, Motors will head to Backlot Tour
right after. They should have cleared out by now. Ride Backlot Tour. Note that Backlot Tour
will take at least 35 minutes to complete. You may want to skip it if you have other business.
The only potentially “scary” moment here is about a minute long at Catastrophe Canyon. It
shouldn’t upset most kids, but see the review if you’re concerned.
14. See Muppet Vision 3D. You’ll exit Backlot Tour further down near the entrance to Lights,
Motors, Action! Continue walking forward through the Streets of America until you get to the
end of the road. You’ll see the entrance to Muppet Vision 3D across from Toy Story Pizza
Planet in a large brick building.
15. Have dinner. It should be about 6:15pm. If Hollywood Studios is closing at 7pm or 8pm
with no Fantasmic scheduled, crowds should have dissipated quite a bit. If this is the case, the
adults may want to return to major attractions like Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster or Tower of Terror.
You may also want to get in line for Toy Story Mania right before close. If Fantasmic is
scheduled, then crowds should still be relatively heavy because so many people are sticking
around for the show.
16. Fantasmic has a variable schedule, with shows that can begin anywhere between 6:30pm
and 10:30pm. As it stands, you should be finished with the Plan by about 7:00pm (6:15pm
without dinner). This is virtually perfect for a Fantasmic that begins between 7:30pm and
8:30pm, but it may require adjustments for earlier or later Fantasmic shows. If Fantasmic begins
earlier, you’ll need to cut out some attractions in the afternoon, take dinner with you to the
Fantasmic theater, or make other dinner arrangements. If Fantasmic begins after 8:30pm, you
may have additional time to return to an attraction you particularly enjoyed or visit attractions
that were previously skipped. For Fantasmic, you’ll want to arrive at least 60 minutes early for
the first Fantasmic and 45 minutes early for the second show. When crowds are heavy or if you
want a prime spot, you’ll want to arrive 90 or more minutes early for the first show and 60 or
more minutes early for the second show. Because of this, the second show is recommended
(when available) because it will be less crowded and requires a shorter wait. Note that Disney
does not usually add the second Fantasmic until about two weeks before a month begins. Only
one show is usually announced when Disney releases the original operating schedule. The best
seats are located in the middle sections about half way up from the bottom of the Theater. Any
closer and you’ll get wet and may have difficulty seeing what’s going on in the water in front of
the stage. Because the stage is so large, there really aren’t any bad seats. See the Fantasmic
overview for additional tips.
17. Exit Hollywood Studios.
Skipped Attractions and How to Fit Them In
3PM Parade: As scheduled, we’ll be relaxing back at the resort/hotel/condo during the 3pm
Parade. If it’s important to your group, you’ll most likely want to tour straight through the day.
Seeing the Parade and trying to schedule a break is logistically difficult unless you’re returning
for a Fantasmic that begins after 9pm. If Fantasmic is scheduled after 9pm, you could feasibly
tour from 9am – 330pm, take a break from 3:30pm – 6:30pm, and return around 7pm.
American Idol Experience: With shows beginning at 12:30pm, you may be able to fit one in
before or after your break. The 7:00pm Finale show is the best and it should be relatively easy to
fit into your Plan if Fantasmic is scheduled after 9:30pm. You may also elect to see the 12:30pm
show instead of Beauty and the Beast or Indiana Jones.
Disney Channel Rocks: This stage show is scheduled throughout the day near Mickey’s
Sorcerer’s Hat. It’s geared towards entertaining kids and we don’t necessarily want to go out of
our way to see it. Since we’ll be passing Mickey’s Sorcerer’s Hat throughout the day, chances
are good a show will be going on at some point and you can catch a few minutes of it.
Honey I Shrunk the Kids Movie Set Adventure: This is a playground area for kids. It doesn’t
offer anything for anyone over the age of eight or nine. The Movie Set Adventure is often
confused for the Honey I Shrunk the Audience 3D show (formerly) at Epcot.
Jedi Training Academy: This show’s stage is located outside of Star Tours and you may be able
to nonchalantly catch a few minutes while you’re in the vicinity. There are multiple shows
scheduled throughout the day and you should be able to fit it in if you really want to see it. It’s a
lot of fun for kids and parents of kids that are participating, but it’s little more than “very cute”
for teens and adults. If you enjoy Star Wars and cute stage shows then you may want to fit this
one in. Otherwise, you’re safe skipping it.
Journey into Narnia: Prince Caspian: This attraction is right next door to Walt Disney: One
Man’s Dream. There is rarely a line longer than 10 minutes and you’re welcome to replace
another attraction with it if you’re particularly interested in the Chronicles of Narnia. Keep in
mind that this is little more than an advertisement for Prince Caspian on Blu-ray and Disney lost
the rights to distribute subsequent Narnia movies.
Magic of Disney Animation Tour: This is a great tour if you have additional time. Consider
replacing it with another attraction if it sounds more appealing or visit it after your break if you
have extra time.
Mulch, Sweat, and Shears Bandscaping: This is a fun band to watch, but not necessarily worth
going out of your way to see. They play along the Streets of America or at Mickey’s Sorcerer’s
Hat and you may see them as you’re walking to a nearby attraction. If you do and you have
some time, stay and watch for a few minutes.
Sounds Dangerous: This oft-closed attraction is rarely open because it isn’t very good or very
popular. It’s a nice respite from the heat when it is open, but 99% of the population will want to
skip it unless you have extra time or need a break.
