n e w s f r o m t h e va l l e y h e a lt h s y s t e m senioradvantage SUMMER 2014 Compliments of lth The Valley Hea System Bon Voyage INSIDE: Stay healthy away from home Meet Summerlin Hospital’s triathlete Roadblocks to weight loss Be good at the food buffet Calendar of events Travel healthy this summer Helping seniors achieve a good quality of life is at the top of the list for us at The Valley Health System. That’s what Senior Advantage is all about. In this issue, we discuss healthy vacation choices – from foods to pack on day trips, to locations that offer opportunity for aerobic activity. We’re also focusing on avoiding weight gain while vacationing, including exerting self-control over food buffets. As for staying active, sometimes following in the footsteps of a mentor is the best way to get motivated. On page 5 you will meet the motivating 62-year-old triathlete Juleen Wright, a Physical Therapist Assistant in Summerlin Hospital’s Physical Therapy Services Department. Juleen is a frequent traveler, and encourages us all to think healthy – whether we’re home or away. Safe travels! Allyson Hoover, RN, MSN System Director of Outreach, Senior Advantage Program, The Valley Health System Avoid gaining weight while on vacation It’s always a good idea to strategize ahead of time to avoid being thrown off track in any of these vulnerable areas: 1. An inconsistent schedule. Even though you’re out of your normal routine, vacations should not be a license to overindulge. Pack healthy snacks in your bag or car, and work out in the hotel gym or swimming pool. 2. Unhealthy snacking between meals. Snacks are meant to hold you over to the next meal, so think of them as functional. An apple, a few almonds and an ounce of low-fat cheese will go a long way toward satisfying your hunger. 3. Limited access to your daily exercise routine. You may need a break from your lifestyle, but never from your exercise program. You can sightsee by foot rather than bus, take advantage of any hiking opportunities, walk on the beach, rent bicycles or swim laps in the hotel pool. 4. You don’t want to give up dessert. You don't have to give up dessert entirely. Just be sure to consider a very small dessert as a treat attached to a meal, as opposed to a larger between-meal snack. 2 www.valleyhealthsystemlv.com 55+ keeps ! getting better Sign up for alth System’s The Valley He ge Program. ta n va d A r io n e S r more See page 6 fo details. healthy buffet eating Economical Las Vegas buffets may seem like the perfect meal option, but the foods can be packed with calories, sodium, saturated fat and sugar. Keep these simple tips in mind: Survey the area The small plate strategy Stay hydrated Think in samples Let your first stop count Indulge in small portions Make mental notes of foods that look really good and those you can live without. This way, you take control of what goes into your mouth. Before eating at a buffet, always drink a full glass of water. This will help curb your hunger so that you consume fewer calories. Start with the salad bar and pile your plate with greens, vegetables and a non-creamy dressing. This can keep you from over-eating the higher calorie entrées. Start with a plate that’s between 8 and 10 inches in diameter. People often eat and drink more when faced with larger portions. Fill up on smaller portions of a variety of foods instead of larger portions of just a few. Eat a maximum of three plates of food, including dessert. Cut desserts in small pieces and take only one piece of each. Then fill half of your plate with fresh fruit, which is lower in calories and fat. ■ The Senior Advantage health and wellness staff wants to help you make healthy choices in the buffet line. Check the cruise ship’s menu and identify healthy food choices to avoid the temptation of “splurge” meals. Use fruity drinks as rewards only after you’ve swum laps in the pool. In the air. Remember to stock up on water after you’ve cleared airport security. Avoid alcohol and soda because they dehydrate the body. Periodically, get up and walk around the plane to avoid cramps or blood clots in the legs. On the road. Instead of relying on fast food, pack a cooler with healthy finger foods, fruits and vegetables. Take breaks at rest stops to stretch your legs every hour, and drink plenty of water. Close to home. Indulge in healthy activity nearby with golf, biking, walking and spa vacations in Mesquite or Laughlin. For hiking, check out local state parks, like Red Rock in our own backyard. ■ Wellness offered seminars are vantage to Senior Ad mbers. program me g Find upcomin seminars on page 7. Senior triathlete Juleen Wright keeps moving One of the ways Juleen Wright, Physical Therapist Assistant, encourages patients in Summerlin Hospital’s Physical Therapy Services Department is by offering them a new perspective. “I ran 3 miles last night, you can take 100 steps today,” she says. And she’s not kidding. During a typical week, Juleen, age 62, will run at least 3 miles every day before or after work. She speaks highly of an active lifestyle. Since age 54, Juleen has participated in 28 triathlons in 12 U.S. states and internationally in Europe and Australia, capturing fourth place in the 2013 World Masters’ Games in Torino, Italy. Knowing she’s doing what’s good for her body keeps her motivated. “I lecture at the hospital about how important it is to keep moving – in any form – from practicing yoga to playing Ping-Pong. You can move when you’re in Hawaii or at home. It can be as simple as walking around your house.” www.valleyhealthsystemlv.com 5 senioradvantage APPLICATION FORM Register now to get your Senior Advantage membership card.
