DAYS OF OUR LIVES #254 MAIL call - PRESERVING FORGOTTEN MEMORIES Your memories are most welcome to the ASA Turkey DAYS OF OUR LIVES and is an effort on my part to preserve the stories and memories of ASA veteran’s who served in Turkey during the COLD WAR with the Soviet Union. I will respond to all emails and will assist whenever needed, but reserve the right to edit for content and clarity and welcome any errors that may appear herein. FIFTY-FOUR YEARS TOGETHER Thanksgiving day 2013 was a significant day for us in that it was our 54th year of marriage. WOW – that’s a long time! I’m 77 and Patty is 74. We celebrated & shared thanksgivings with our youngest son and his fiancé and her extended family. Also our daughter-in-law sent a dozen red roses from Alaska. The O’briens, Jack & Kay, ASA Turkey friends also sent a wedding card. Here’s an up-date on our friend Harold (Hal) Winkler – better known as “Winkie”. I called Winkie on Thanksgiving and he sounded great and informs that he’s feeling much better and had just returned from a flight to Atlanta. His spirits are high and he’s anxious to find out where the 2014 reunion will be held. OMG….. I had DOOL #254 almost finalized the day before Thanksgiving and low and behold I SOMEHOW lost it somewhere within my PC and, - yes, I had to re-do it and just might have missed some photo’s and tidbits. This is the third time it has happened to me…. Any suggestions? December 2, 2013 Page 1 of 40 At the reunion there was a meeting to discuss who will volunteer to host the 2014 reunion and where to hold it. There were no volunteers. Lancaster, PA is still high on the list as is Rehoboth Beach in Delaware, Buffalo, Niagara Falls, Chicago, Cleveland, Akron, York, PA and several other sites. In planning a reunion – the budget and other expenses add up quickly. We did our level best to provide the most cost effective sleeping room rates and entertainment at a reasonable price. Attending the 2013 reunion wasn’t cheap. For example the overall cost ranged from $290 to $570 plus transportation. This year we had 14 new veteran’s & 40 oldtimers present. For 2014 we intend to likewise keep the cost reasonable. Thus plan ahead. During the reunion we sold 50/50 raffle tickets to raise money for our treasury and to assist Bill Simons and Chuck Bergmann with website and relay activities relating to the monthly DOOL’s. Maureen McCoy won $125/ Bill Hartranft send me a memory check list about his youthful days as a ditty-bopper at Manzarali Station. It was in the DOOL that was mysteriously deleted, but he still evaded answering why he avoids attending the reunions. If so, let me know. I lost two kudos emails from Jim Crane and Ralph Richter and I thank them for their thoughtfulness. The main speaker at the 2013 ASA Turkey reunion was to be retired Colonel William P. Walters who spent 34 years in the ASA/INSCOM. He and his wife had just returned from a Germany vacation and both developed flu like symptons and had to cancel. We had slightly over 100 registrations this year making it the largest we have ever attended.I hope everyone had a safe return to their homes and enjoyed themselves. We had a great time hosting this year. We would like to thank those who helped and the generosity that was shown in making the hospitality room a great success. That generosity was responsible for the taco bar, flaming desert bar, and the open bar on Sunday night as well as the Bloody Mary breakfast on Wednesday morning. I think everyone enjoyed the Alabama Theatre and meal at T-Bonz as well as Maxwell's on Tuesday night. We tried to find the best values and quality for your evenings as possible. If you enjoyed yourselves please contact your old ASA friends and invite them to December 2, 2013 Page 7 of 40 our 2014 reunion. We would like to also thank Max Putter for furnishing hats and shirts for all the attendees and also for door prizes, and others who donated our door prizes this year.We would like to get feed-back from you to help make our reunions even better and let us know the negative as well as positive. Suggestions Welcome. Luther & Edna As mentioned above the North Myrtle Beach CVB was supposed to deliver a welcome packet, but did not. I prepared a welcome letter which included the agenda and the names, by detachment , which gave the attendees the opportunity to correspond with others after the reunion. It also was later used to keep track of the photo’s in this DOOL. It might now take a 981 to decipher the scribblings. Below begins the flow of photo’s taken during the reunion December 2, 2013 Page 11 of 40 Patty Green Frank & Judy Siebenaler Patty Green Above is the only photo’s of those walking the beach opposite the Beach Cove Resort A VERY GENEROUS TURKEY VETERAN AND HIS WIFE Rick & Carol Asper from Fort Lauderdale, Florida Throughout the reunion Rick Asper could be spotted on his Segway. He needed it as his suite was on the far end of the 16th floor. On Sunday eve from 5:30 to 8:30 pm Rick & Carol sponsored a TACO BAR meal with all the trimmings in the hospitality room. The desert consisted of a Flaming Dessert Station which December 2, 2013 Page 12 of 40 was enjoyed by all. There was a wet bar with a hosted premium liquor set up nearby. This event was similar to the CREPES meal that Rick & Carol sponsored at the Valley Forge reunion in 2011. ANOTHER VERY GENEROUS TURKEY VETERAN AND HIS WIFE Max & Carol Putter from Ventnor City, New Jersey Max has been making embroidered baseball type caps for the veteran’s since 2007 December 2, 2013 Page 13 of 40 Above is Frank Siebenaler from Lake City, MN describing why he kept the Trick 2 platoon roster of 1963. In 1963 he was known as Sgt Francis A. Siebenaler and was the Asst. Platoon Sgt of the 2nd Platoon Below is that roster that has my scribblings trying to find those 93 vets thereon. Of the 93 only 16 have been found and 5 of those attend the reunions almost every year. They are Frank Siebenaler, Ken Whitman, Tom Lazzara, Bill Cook and Barry Wenger. It is hoped that those 5 try to locate the other 93 veterans. December 2, 2013 Page 14 of 40 Above is Tom Lazzara, one of those 5 former members of Trick 2 at Manzarali. I was sitting on the patio and heard someone calling my name. Got up, looked – then noticed that it was Tom calling. It was Tom who downloaded the photo’s from my camera onto a CD along with his photo’s. Quite a few of those photo’s are included in this DOOL. Thanks Tom. Flo’s name was the second name drawn in the door prize drawing – her choice was a Lenox Camel, an afghan or a Bowie Knife. Guess which one she chose? Nope – it was the Bowie knife. December 2, 2013 Page 20 of 40 John Johnson, 09J, Det 4 from Fishers, Indiana The Lapp’s from Medina, Ohio – Dean and Deborah – This was their first reunion December 2, 2013 Page 21 of 40 The Lienke’s, Wesley and Sharyn from River Falls, WI. It was Sharyn who donated the beautiful afghan for the main door prize. Clay and Ruth Lifto from Fayetteville, NC. This was their first reunion. Shortly after starting the DOOL’s – I started receiving emails with excellent clues from someone who worked for me at Det 27 & 4-4 in Turkey. That person also said he met me at II Field Force Tactical Operational Center in Long Bien where I was the Assistant ASA Briefing person for the 3-star Commander for II Field Force. I was dumbfounded and still could not remember his name. I gave up and he ID’d himself as none other than the above Clay Lifto. Of course I remember Clay Lifto. He arrived as a PFC Russian Linguist. No slots available. He was assigned to TA and did outstanding work on the MATSUM and ended up as a Trick Chief. Clay served 28 years in the Army, 10 of which were on active duty. During that period he earned 23 service medals and is a Life Member of the DAV. Most everyone laughed at the stagehand Ricky Mokel’s jokes & gestures which kept all in stitches from start to finish. Also the costumes and props for the 3 hour show were glitzy and professional. No photo taking was allowed during the ONE show. Below are photo’s taken at the TBONZ restaurant. That 2005 visit was quite intoxicating and I wasn’t sure what questions to ask, keeping in mind that I’m a old retired First Sergeant. That meeting went well and we now call the Isler’s are friends. When I lost the first edition of #254 – I also lost the write-up on Rod Isler. Ohh… before I forget Rod was drafted and then enlisted for the ASA.
