1. REQUIREMENTS
• Install 2 new cremators at Maitland Crematorium
• Minimum Cremation Rate – 5 cremations per 8 hour shift
• Machines must be able to fit within the existing building constraints
• Existing machines to stay where they are
• Building’s outer structure / roof must preferably stay in tact

The UK's most stringent regulations - PG 5/2 (12) [2012]
• Particulate Matter - 160 mg/m³ averaged over an hour for
all cremations
• Carbon monoxide - 200 mg/m³ averaged over the first hour
for all cremations
Maximum allowable emissions as per SA's government gazette dated 23 Nov 2012 - Doc no: 35894
5. South Africa compared to Europe
Consequently, current regulations require a full scale flue gas abatement filtration system configured
for Mercury, Particulate Matter, SO2 and NOX removal.
[Only 1 such system is currently installed in Europe and its not yet proven.]
5. International best practise for
Pollution Monitoring and Control
•
Visual emissions shall not exceed 5% opacity [15% for a max duration of 6 minutes in any 1 hour]
•
Particulate matter emissions shall not exceed 160mg/m³ of flue gas
•
CO emissions shall not exceed 200 mg/m³
•
Minimum Secondary combustion chamber temperature: 850˚C
•
Minimum retention time in secondary combustion chamber: 1 second [recommended: 2 seconds]
•
Cremation must not be allowed to start if the secondary chamber is not at least 850˚C
•
Cremators must continuously monitor and record internal temperatures
•
Each cremator must be operated with a pollutant monitoring system to automatically control combustion based on
continuous in-stack opacity measurements. [combustion in the primary chamber must automatically be restricted
whenever opacity exceeds 15%]
•
Opacity & additional environmental sensors must be cleaned / inspected daily
