- The Columbus Marathon -
Completing the Journey One Mile at a Time
Sarah Hess wrote an article about competing in her first marathon. The Columbus Marathon Race Director contacted her
and invited her to the VIP dinner on Friday evening, but Sarah could not attend
because the Rick Brown Memorial Race
was being held on Saturday morning. He
told her to look him up at the race; she
did, and they had a nice chat. Sarah’s article appeared on the Columbus Marathon
website. Here is Sarah’s article:
Vivian Brown and Sarah Hess
complete the 2011 Columbus Marathon
Running a marathon is something I never
thought I would do.
I come from a family of runners; my dad,
mom, and brother have all run many
marathons. I have always said that I am the
only one in my family to have not run a
marathon.
Diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis at
the age of 13, I stopped running. Years
passed, and I had never thought about
starting again. Then, one day in June of
2009, I was out for a walk and something
inside me said - why not run. I began to run,
probably not even a quarter mile at a stretch,
but I stuck with it. Slowly building up the
distance, I could run.
I signed up for my first race, a one-mile
run, two weeks later. I ran the whole mile
with my dad by my side, and I thought I would
pass out by the end. But, I stuck with it. I
continued to try to run each day and ran a
5K in September and October, both with my
dad by my side, encouraging me and advising
me along the way.
A week after my October race, I received
the devastating news that my dad had died
while running the Detroit Half Marathon.
Instead of quitting, I kept running. After all,
this was his passion, and it was beginning
to grow within me. The following August
(2010), I ran my first half marathon in
Parkersburg, WV. I was now hooked.
Sometime early this year, I made the
decision that I wanted to run a marathon.
After talking with my mom, I registered for
the Columbus Marathon and my brother
registered for the half. After all, that is where
both my parents ran their first marathons
and always enjoyed running several more.
My mom has completed this journey with
me, also registering for the marathon. All of
those long runs together, side by side, she
has advised me just as my dad would have.
I know I can complete this journey one mile
at a time, one step at a time. Together, mom
and I will cross the finish line. The training
has been emotional and tough, but I will now
run my first marathon in Columbus, the same
day as Detroit, to pay tribute to my dad,
my hero.
LET’S CELEBRATE ANOTHER GREAT YEAR TOGETHER!

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE ~ SHARON MARKS
There are many things I
love, though I think we overuse
that phrase in our everyday
lives.
One of the things I love other than the obvious (family,
friends, running partners) - is
my job. I am a teacher, and I
can honestly say I love my job
at Parkersburg High School.
However, Thanksgiving Day I
might have found my other love;
I wore the brainchild of Joe
Corra, a small mobile camera
attached to my head with a
turkey hat, of course. I had the best time ever. So, if I ever
leave my current career, I have decided I will become the
full-time River City Runners & Walkers Club greeter.
Priceless!
The Turkey Trot saw the largest crowd ever. Over 2,900
registered turkeys were weaving their way up and down
Washington Avenue. At one point the entire avenue, as far
as the eye could see, was filled with people, young and old,
running and walking, enjoying the chance to get out and
meet and greet the entire town and burn a few calories.
The scene was awesome. I would like to take this opportunity
to congratulate everyone who came out on Thanksgiving
morning to participate, and a special thank you goes to the
residents of Washington Avenue and Park Avenue. They
are very gracious to allow us to take over their roads for a
couple of hours. This subject is a great oppportunity for
me to segue to my next topic: volunteers.
Each of us has come out for one or more events, whether
it is a turkey trot, 5K, or half marathon, and we have had a
great experience. That does not magically occur. Each event
takes hours of preparation and many hours of work from
unpaid volunteers. I am a staunch believer in volunteerism
for everyone, young and old. Our country was born on the
concept of volunteerism. There is a multitude of ways to
get involved; for example, on Thanksgiving Day Marchell
and Makenzie Allman went to the Salvation Army to help
se rve me als to th ose wh o could n’t affor d thei r own
Thanksgiving meal. This is just one example of the many
opportunities for volunteerism. If you want to volunteer
for a race event, there are 30+ races listed on the RCRWC
website. I know this is a little like a broken record; but if
you have a good time at the races now, get involved - and
you will really appreciate the experience.
I am always amazed by those who take volunteerism to
the next level. One example: Andrew Miller. I introduced
this young man at the Turkey Trot. Andrew ran 2,400 miles
from Long Beach, CA, to his hometown of Spencer, WV, in
five months. He raised $22,000 for the Wounded Warrior
Project. He was a very humble young man, and I am proud
to say I was able to meet him.
For Christmas this year I purchased cookbooks for my
family from Terri Santiago. Terri’s son, Chris, lost both his
legs in the Iraq War on September 16, 2006. To aid the
Wounded Warrior Project, Terri put together a cookbook to
raise money for the Wounded Warrior cause. If you are
interested in purchasing a cookbook, e-mail Terri at
[email protected]. Well done and good luck.
Finally, I would like to give some advice to get through
the winter months - stay active! No one dislikes cold more
than me, but don’t let that stop you. There are many
activities out there to keep you in shape. If you ski, enjoy
the snow. Warm water more to your liking? Then try the
YMCA pool.
Remember, all River City Runners & Walkers Club
members may enjoy a free month of membership for the
YMCA, Broad Street and Market Street branches, in February
(see page 5). You can cycle, play basketball, take a class
(let me suggest TNT, M-W-F), or lift some weights. Take
the family and get everyone involved.
Take the kids sleigh riding or just walk or run at
McDonough Park. DON’T sit on the couch. Get up and get
moving; and if you can take someone with you, then you
have performed another form of volunteerism. Check out
the calendar and pick a race, any race, and sign up - and
then get a plan. It won’t happen by itself - so do it NOW.
I hope to see you on the streets, in the woods, or in the
gym. “Happy Winter” to you and your family.

What would we do without these guys? They are all
familiar faces at the finish line, devoting many

OUR WALKER MARATHON MAN
by Lori Watt
His decision was made in
November, 2010. His journe y
be gan in January, 2011. His
determination took him through
December, 2011.
Randy Skidmore, aka “Skid,”
took on the challenge of completing a half marathon every
month for the entire year of 2011.
Skid be gan his journe y in
Fairmont, WV, worked his way
through Dublin, OH; Cincinnati,
OH; Athens, OH; Wheeling, WV;
Paine sville , OH; Erie , PA;
Parkersburg, WV; New Albany,
OH; Columbus, OH; Huntington,
WV; and ended in Ashland, OH.
And as if a half every month was
not e nough, he also whippe d
through many 5Ks, a couple 10Ks, a half marathon relay, two
full marathons, and trained over 1,900 miles on foot.
When I asked Skid what his favorite half of the year was,
his reply was Columbus, Ohio. He enjoys the course in general.
Columbus always attracts many spectators and has lots of
music during the entire course.
Skid’s biggest accomplishment of his racing year was the
Cleveland Marathon where he won the walking division with
a time of 5:07:32. This was Skid’s first full marathon walk.
After the full marathon, I asked him if he would race another
full marathon - his answer was “maybe.” Well, his “maybe”
turned into another great time for another full marathon only
six months after the Cleveland Marathon.
Skid went to Richmond, VA, in November where he proudly
finished the full marathon in 5:05:51. This race meant a lot
to him as it was to raise money for organ donors. For more
information go to: www.donatelifevirginia.org.

~ IMPORTANT RACE INFORMATION ~
RCRWC offers two racing awards at the Annual Banquet - the
Running and Walking Series awards and the Race Points awards.
For the RCRWC Running and Walking Series Awards: You
must sign up to be eligible for this award, you must be a RCRWC
member, and you must complete a certain number of races to be
eligible for an award. You do not have to report your results for
any of the Series races. We have that information and will record
your points for you. Your points start accumulating on the date
that you register for the Series.
For the Race Points Awards: To be eligible for Race Points
awards, you must send ALL your results to Donna Graham,
including any Series races. These will not be automatically
kept for you for this award. This award is an accumulation of
ALL the races you have done, and points are given accordingly.
Send your monthly mileage to Gary Pennington.
When sending your race results, please use the following
format EACH month. RACE DATE, RACE NAME AND CITY/
STATE, YOUR TIME, YOUR AWARD, if any. ONLY RECORD
AWARDS THAT WERE ACTUALLY GIVEN. If you came in fourth
in your age group, but only the top three in the age group were
given awards, then please do not list that you were fourth.
SEE PAGE 6 (results from Jim, Tony, and Rob) FOR THE
CORRECT FORMAT TO SEND IN YOUR RACES. PLEASE
FOLLOW THIS FORMAT EXACTLY - IT WILL HELP SO MUCH!

Racewalking Notes and News
by Donna Graham
Happy New Year to everyone! I will keep this article very short
because I need the space for other articles and information that
I don’t want to have to cut. Believe it or not, I don’t have much to
say this month anyway.
I did my first Polar Bear Run/Walk on January 1, and it was
lots of fun. Everyone picks the ir own distance, from 1-7
miles...and then everyone heads to Shoney’s to pack those calories burned back on. It was fun! I have to thank Chip for encouraging me to come since I’ve been “taking a break” for way longer
than I had intended. It was great to get out and get at it again.
Hopefully, I will use that as my “new start” for the year.
I hope everyone has set some goals for 2012 and sees them
through during the year!
If you are a walker and want to be “in the loop” when I send
out e-mails to inform/remind/ask, please send me an e-mail
([email protected]) with “Add Me to E-Mail List”
in the Subject line. That way you will keep up on what is happening concerning the walkers in between newsletters.
~ Congratulations to Amber Hanes & John Carter ~
They’re engaged!
A cute and interesting story ~
New member Douglas Jones, 47, from Crawfordsville, Indiana, registered for a family membership. Cyndi e-mailed him
and asked for more information since he registered online, and
there is no space for family information. Here is his reply:
“I suppose you’re wondering why a guy from Indiana is joining your run club, and justly so. Long story short - my (possible)
fiancee (pending she says “yes” this Christmas morning) lives
in Vienna, and I make quite a few trips down there. I figured
since I’m down that way as often as I am, I just as well join the
local run club. I’ve already run a number of races down there the Parkersburg Half Marathon, 5K in Boaz, the Turkey Trot last
month, and a night race in Parkersburg. I’m hoping to do the
Belpre 5K in January and the Athens Marathon in April (my
first full). My love is triathlons, though. I completed a few half
Ironman races and did the Wisconsin full Ironman this year.
Family members are myself, Margery Frerich, 47, and her daughter
Alex, 22.”
I called Doug and asked what the outcome of the Christmas morning proposal was....DRUMROLL...she said, “Yes!”
Welcome to the club Douglas, Margery, and Alex!

Our Walker Marathon Man - continued from page 6
Skid finishe d more than 40 race s in 2011. His list of
marathons and half marathons appear at the bottom and right.
I recently asked Skid what his goal for 2012 is. He looked at
me with compassion, pride, and determination and stated, “I
want to make a difference. I want to give back.”
At that very moment I knew what Skid was referring to
without needing him to say anything further. At that moment
Skid reinforced my admiration for him and made me realize
why I gravitate toward him. He is one of a kind; there is no
other like him.
Skid is on the National Kidney Donation List where he will
participate in a kidney swap. In return, his wife Corky will be
able to receive a much-needed kidney. For more information
and to see how you may be able to help someone in need,

Editor’s Note: I contacted Randy and asked him if it was
acceptable to him and Corky to share this article with our
members. Randy does not like to be in the “spotlight,” but he
said it would be fine. He also asked if I would include the
following: “I would personally like to thank Jay, Tim, Bernie,
Tena, Martha, Anda, and especially Lori for training with me.
Lori completed e ight of the half marathons and one full
marathon with me.”
