On 18th May, TV presenter Jamie Rickers and George Kruis from Saracens Rugby Club joined 762 children, staff and parents on the school playground in an attempt to smash the World Record for the most people dancing at the same time. At exactly 1pm thousands of school children in the UK and across the world performed the Big Dance! With many staff and children wearing tutus, leg warmers and wigs, it was a sight to behold! The new record attempt is a warm-up for this summer’s Big Dance, running from July 7–15 as part of the London 2012 Festival. See www.bigdance2012.com to find out more. Sprint Kayaker Ed Coxvisits the school I n February, we were lucky enough to have a visit from Olympic sprint kayaker and world silver medalist, Ed Cox. Ed, 26, came to our assembly to talk about his career as a kayaker. He started rowing at his local club as a teenager and then tried for two Olympic Games but was unsuccessful. So this year he is trying again to qualify for Team GB. Ed spoke in assembly about his love of his sport and his strict training schedule. He brought in his paddle and a silver medal along with the outfit he wears when competing. He answered lots of questions then visited each classroom for a class photo. We wish Ed the best of luck and will be looking out for him. Elliot 44 | | Wheatfields WheatfieldsSchool SchoolLife Life he Olympic Games is the world’s biggest sporting event where athletes from more than 200 nations come together to compete for gold, silver and bronze medals. They take place every four years and this year, in case you didn’t know, they are in England during July and August. The last time the Olympic Games were held in England was 1948, just as the Second World War had ended. Many people believed it was the wrong time to hold a sporting festival with so many countries left in ruin and people near starvation. For that reason, all the athletes were told to bring their own food and what was left was given to local hospitals. No new buildings were built for the event, no Olympic village. The athletes had to stay in dormitaries in army barracks. Luckily Wembley stadium was still standing. The games turned out to be hugely successful with more than 4,000 athletes competing from 59 countries. There have been many Olympics but during 1916, 1940 and 1944 they were cancelled because of the War, leaving many disappointed fans. The last Olympic Games was held in Beijing, China in 2008, where 43 new world records and 132 new Olympic records were set. 86 countries won at least one medal during the Games. American swimmer, Michael Phelps, broke the record for the most gold medals in one Olympic Games. In total, he has won 16 medals. In Beijing, England won a total of 47 medals, 19 of which were gold. Some of our winners include Dame Kelly Holmes, Mo Farah, Tom Daley, Chris Hoy, Rebecca Adlington and Christine Ohuruogu. If you have been lucky enough to get tickets for any of the upcoming Olympic events, why not tell us about it. There are many events including boxing, running, rowing, swimming, volleyball and diving. If you were not successful in securing tickets, be sure to watch the Olympics on tv and cheer on Team GB! The Olympic Flame The Olympic flame came from the ancient Olympic Games. In Olympia (Greece), a flame was lit by the sun and then kept burning until the closing of the games. The flame represents purity and perfection. In 1936, one of the games organisers suggested what is now the Olympic Torch relay. The Olympic flame is lit at the ancient site of Olympia by women wearing ancient-style robes. The Torch is then passed from runner to runner from the ancient site of Olympia to the Olympic stadium in the hosting city. The flame is then kept alight until the end of the games. ox!” “Goo d luck Ed C “The last time the Olympic Games was held in England was 64 years ago!” The Official Olympic Flag Created by a man called Pierre de Coubertin in 1914, the Olympic flag contains five coloured rings. The rings symbolize the five continents and are connected to symbolize the friendship to be gained from these international competitions. The rings, from left to right, are blue, yellow, black, green, and red. The colours were chosen because at least one of them appeared on the flag of every country in the world. The flag was first flown during the 1920 Olympic Games. “Come on Team GB!’ One to watch Does swimming enthusiast Ben Muckleston (6RR) have what it takes to become an Olympic champion? We think he does... Q When did you start swimming? started having swimming lessons when I was 5 years old and enjoy it over all the sports I play. I joined City of St Albans Swimming Club when I was just 6 years old. Q How often do you train? Over the years I have increased the amount of time that I train. I attend 4-5 sessions a week at either Westminster Lodge or the High School. Q What have you competed in? I have competed in galas, open meets, arena leagues, peanuts leagues, herts league, club championships and Counties. I’ve competed at Counties twice and came 3rd two years running. I’m also about to compete in my first ever regional championships in Norwich which I am looking forward to. I went to Loughborough University during the Easter holidays for a five day hard swimming camp where I met Liam Tancock and Elizabeth Simmons (and other GB swimmers) who were training there at the same time. I Q Do you get nervous? If so, how do you conquer your nerves? No, I don’t really get nervous. Sometimes I do relaxation and visualisation sessions beforehand. Q What have been the best moments of your swimming career so far? The best moment of my career was when I came third in the County. Q What makes a good sports man? Regular training, hard work and realising you cannot win all the time! Q What other sports do you do? I play badminton and football but enjoy badminton the most after swimming. Q Will you be watching the Olympics? Yes! I will be watching the Olympics, especially swimming as I would love to compete in the Olympics one day. Q Who are your sporting inspirations? I am inspired by Liam Tancock, Rebecca Adlington and most of all Michael Phelps as he also swims my strongest stroke which is butterfly. Q Do you have any training tips or advice? Don’t be nervous and once you’re in the water just swim as fast as you can. When you get older you will need to start thinking about your technique. Q What school will you be going to in September? I will be going to Sandringham and am nervous about all the hard work we will have to do! Q What have been your best moments at Wheatfields? My best moments at Wheatfields have been with my friends, and representing the school in loads of different sports events. I will never forget these moments. I will miss all the teachers, especially Mr.Sanders and Mrs.Russell. Wheatfields School Life | 5 Why I’m rooting for TEAM BELIZE T his year I will be supporting Team Belize at the Olympics. Who? You might ask. And where is Belize? Belize is a tiny country set between Mexico and Guatemala on the Caribbean coast of Central America. It is the place where my Grandma (one of 10 children), met my Grandad, many years ago. They moved to England and raised my mum, aunty and uncles here. However, my Uncle Andy always held a fascination with Belize, so much so that he became a Belizian national. Imagine our excitement when he phoned to tell us that he was planning to compete in the 2012 Olympic Games, not for Team GB, but for Team Belize! Uncle Andy is a trap shooter and will be one of 6 athletes representing Belize in the Olympic Games. Andy Wigmore with Team GB shooting coach, Kevin Gill Trap shooting is a form of competitive clay pigeon shooting (shotgun shooting at clay targets), so it is safe! Although a relative newcomer to trap shooting, Uncle Andy has already proved his skill at the sport by competing in the World Championships in the USA. “People don’t realise what a great mental and physical discipline trap shooting is,” said Andy. “I am just looking forward to being part of this amazing event. London will put on a great show and just to be a part of the Olympic Games will be an incredible experience. I can’t wait!” Look out for Andy in the Olympic Games opening ceremony on 27th July. It promises to be quite spectacular. Also, take a look at the Team Belize website for updates on Andy’s progress. (www.belizeolympicteam.com) Stanley Scooter SLAMMIN’ The E Z A R C t s e t a l I magine if you mixed the action and speed of a BMX bike with the stunts and tricks of a skateboard! Sounds like fun? You only have to visit any skate park or half-pipe to see that stunt scooters are the latest craze. Freestyle scootering is an action sport which involves using scooters to perform freestyle tricks. The scooters that are most popular are Slamm Scooters or Madd Gear. These are specially designed strong scooters that are lightweight and tough, very 6 | Wheatfields School Life different from the Razor Scooters from 10 years ago. Freestyle scooter decks are usually made from one or two pieces. This means they can take a battering down the skate park. There are many tricks a rider can pull on a stunt scooter, from very simple and easy ‘Tail-Whips’ or ‘BarSpins’ to insane moves such as the ‘Bri-Flip Air’. A basic decent scooter would cost around £70 but remember, to be safe, you need a proper helmet when “Get yourself down to the Pioneer Skate Park to try out some crazy stunts...” oters their stunt sco 6RR boys show off performing any stunts, and elbow and knee pads might be a good idea, too.You can also customise your scooter with a range of different pegs and grips. In St Albans, a great place to try this exciting new sport is at the Pioneer Skate Park on Heathlands Drive on a Friday evening or Saturday afternoon... So get yourself down there to check out the action! Hopefully, we can give you some directions and advice. 8 | Wheatfields School Life Gam es S O M Z GI The IPAD is just amazing I f you have ever been lucky enough to use an iPad, you’ll know how much fun they are. An iPad is a type of device known as a tablet, not the kind you eat or swallow, but something that looks like a flat slab. It has nearly all the functions of a computer, squashed into a touch screen. What is it that makes an iPad so cool? You can do many things on it, such as download applications, little programmes ranging from useful to entertaining. Also known as ‘apps’. An iPad is extremely portable, but it won’t fit in your pocket, as it is about the size and thickness of a comic. It is also brilliant for watching films on as the screen is a decent size. At the moment, I spend a lot of time playing games on it. My favourites are Angry Birds, Plants vs. Zombies and Doodle Jump, but there are many more. You can also email your friends, and even FaceTime ( see their face on screen whilst talking to them) if you want. To add to this, you can read books, listen to music, and surf the Internet. The good news is the school has just bought a set of iPads, so come and have a try! The app with attitude O ne day, a group of birds gathered around to protect their precious, but tasty eggs. A harmless butterfly landed on one of their eggs, overreacting they pecked and pecked the living daylights out of the poor thing. Leaving their eggs unprotected, the sly pigs swiftly snatched the eggs and ran off to their queen. The birds however, catapulted themselves onto the pigs to destroy them. You can get many types of different birds, such as the bomber bird, which blows things up when in contact, or the boomerang bird, who goes the opposite direction when you touch the screen, but there are many more. The objective of the game is to catapult the different birds with your finger and destroy all the pigs in all the different levels to get your eggs back. You can have hours of fun with this great app. New Sony handheld is a Vita-l gadget! The Sony Playstation Vita (PS Vita) is the brand new handheld console from the makers of the PS3 and the PSP. It was released on 22nd February this year, with prices starting from £229. It’s an amazing device, packed with features. Its has a 5 inch OLED touchscreen display that is bright and detailed. It has a front and rear facing camera, two analogue joysticks, and supports Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and 3G. It even has a touchscreen on the back of the console, so that you can gesture on the screen, without your fingers blocking the view! It is more ergonomically designed ( shaped better so your wrists don’t hurt) which is a bonus if you don’t want arthritis! The device allows viewing and listening of music, movies and pictures. However, you do have to buy a special Sony memory card to store all of your goodies. Now on to the games…Games are the heart of this console, and they look and play impressively. Uncharted: Golden Abyss and WipEout are two excellent titles, and owners can also download ‘mini’ games from the PSN website. There are plenty of game titles to choose from, too, with many more on the way. Overall, it is an expensive gadget, but in almost every way, it makes the Nintendo 3DS look outdated. It is a high-end piece of kit, but it does have great features and great games. A brilliant alternative to books A Kindle is a brilliant alternative to reading a book and is very useful when it comes to choosing the right book for you! Kindles are very popular and here is why: Usually it’s difficult to choose the right book but a Kindle gives you a rating and a review of the book. As well as this, the Amazon Kindle books are really cheap! Once you have chosen your books, you may read whenever you like, being able to adjust the font size larger or smaller. It’s really easy to use and when it’s fully charged it can last for up to a month! This is why I think the Kindle is so good! Francesca P lants vs. Zombies is a fun and addictive tower defence game. You are the plants, which have to defend your lovely garden from the brain eating zombies! You have to select the right plants for the right type of zombies. There are plants that can perform ranged attacks, which fire peas, poisonous spores, icy melons and explosive cabbages. There are also plants that block like the wall nut, explosive attacks are also very useful, such as the cherry bomb and the fiery jalapeño. As you progress through the game you unlock different plants to fight stronger zombies. Mini games are my favourite part of this game, particularly Wall Nut Bowling, and Whack a Zombie. Sudoku There’s just one simple rule in Sudo ku. Each row, column, diagonal and 3 x 3 box must contain the numbers 1 to 9. This is a logic puzzle, so you shouldn’t need to guess the answers! 6 85 4 5 17 4 6 25 7 4 8 3 3 9 42 5 6 9 6 4 1 2 7 38 4 72 “You can download over 1000 free bo oks and it is very lig ht to carry when yo u go on ho liday.” Anna Turn to page 15 for the answers Wheatfields School Life | 9 E N O H P t s r i My f Skylanders I f you haven’t heard of Skylanders, you must have been living under a rock! It has been the gaming phenomenon of the year. Combining the fun of collecting action figures with the challenge of battling characters in a video game, Skylanders has been a huge hit with children. and grown ups. It’s a little bit like Pokemon, brought to life on your games console. It involves a special plastic portal and some Skylanders figures which come bundled in with the game’s starter pack. Once you connect the portal (which looks like a small stage) to your console, you can start the Skylanders game. Place one of the action figures on the portal, and pop! Your Skylander character suddenly appears on screen! From this point, you have to set out on an adventure, and restore the ‘Core of Light’, and defeat the villain ‘Chaos’, and his evil minions! Buy new figures, and you can then play them within the game. There are 32 different characters to collect. Coming up in autumn 2012 will be Skylanders: Giants. With eight new Skylander characters that are double the size of the original Skylander figures! The giants come with new levels and new powers, and also light up when near your portal. These are sure to be a ‘must-have’ for Christmas! 10 10 | | Wheatfields WheatfieldsSchool SchoolLife Life This September, I will be going to senior school, and my parents and I have agreed that getting a mobile phone is a good idea. WHY? he main reason is that it would be very useful to contact them should arrangements change in my going to and from school, and to be able to get in touch should there be an emergency. I suppose you might say it could help me be a little bit more responsible and independent! There is also the added bonus of being able to call and text friends, play games, and listen to music…But these are just unexpected extras! Here are the things we considered before buying: COST Mobile phones can cost as little as £20 or as much as £400. Seeing as this was my first phone, in case I lost or broke it, we decided to buy a cheaper model. TARIFF There are two types; ‘Pay monthly’ or ‘Pay-as-you-go’. If you pay monthly, you need an adult to agree to pay a monthly fee. This can start at £10 a month, and allows you a limited number of calls (‘minutes’) and texts every month. If you pay-as-you-go, calls and texts are more expensive, but the cost is easier to manage. You can ‘top up’ your calls and texts by paying a small amount at a time, in advance. Before getting stuck with T “There is also the added bonus of being able to call and text friends, play games, and listen to music…But these are just unexpected extras!” a long contract, and to encourage sensible use, my dad thought it best to start with pay-as-you-go, but we will review this at a later date. FEATURES Even the most basic model of mobile phone has a lot of features. Look out for a camera, touchscreen, mp3 music player, games, and wifi. The main question to ask is; 'What will I be using it for most?' I want to make the occasional call and text, with some basic gaming functions and a music player, so I made sure the model we chose had those features. CARRIER The main mobile phone networks all have their advantages and disadvantages, with their coverage and costs. My dad says; “We thought it would be important to choose a low cost, reliable provider." PARENTAL CONTROLS Also important was the feature of ‘parental controls’. It can be too easy to download expensive or inappropriate content, or accidentally subscribe to expensive services. Parental controls allows blocking of these features, giving your folks piece of mind, helping you to use your phone sensibly. With all this in mind, we finally settled on a SAMSUNG C3530 chrome silver, from Tesco Mobile, on pay-as-you-go. Hopefully, this should last me for a little while! Stanley “The scho ol has just boug ht some IPADS so give one a try!” Parents! Bemilo will bring you peace of mind L ike any form of communication, mobile phones can be misused. When your children start using their own mobile, it would be useful to know that they are safe and secure on a network, and using their phone sensibly. Bemilo launched in the UK on 21st May. It’s a mobile phone network that allows parents to manage their children’s mobile phone activity. When using a Bemilo SIM card, parents immediately have access to a web page any time of the day, and are then able to customise the settings of their child’s phone. Features include: • Who your child can contact and who can contact your child; • The time of day they can use their phone; • A function to block unwanted contacts; • A function to review calls, messages, and spend. Simon Goff, founder and Chairman of Bemilo says; “Be it late night phone use, or cyber bullying, Bemilo is the only network to provide parents with the controls necessary to manage and protect their children. It’s simple and safe, and it’s what parents have been asking for.” Find out more at: www.bemilo.com, or visit your local Carphone Warehouse. Doodle Jump D oodle jump is a brilliant app for the iPod touch and the iPad. It is a vertical platform game, and your objective is to try to get as high as you can to the top, without falling down and dying. On your way you will have to shoot, bounce on or dodge evil monsters that try to send you to the bottom! Your name is Doodler and you are a strange green alien that shoots small rocks to kill monsters. Also you can pick up special upgrades to help you travel further and faster. You must remember to avoid the fake platforms that snap when you jump on them! Springs and trampolines are also very useful. They help you go higher. There are many different types of levels, such as the underwater level where you shoot bubbles and kill sea monsters. There is the space level where you shoot small rockets, or, my favourite, the football level where you shoot footballs and kill different country co-ordinated monsters! And lastly, there are different types of platforms, like the one that blows up, or moves from side to side, or that disappears when you bounce on it! Overall, it is a fun and addictive game that is hard to put down. World of Warcraft Enter the World of Warcraft. A strange and magical place full of Trolls, Goblins and Orcs W orld of Warcraft is a hugely popular on-line role playing game set in a fantasy world. The object is to develop your character to the highest level possible by winning battles, solving puzzles and completing missions to gain valuable experience points. My favourite part of this game is teaming up, online, with other players. This allows you to complete the really tough parts of the game as a team. It is different from other games because it is subscription-based. This means you have to pay a monthly fee as opposed to a one-off payment, to be able to continue playing the game. What I love about this game is the huge variety of characters and massive amount of land to explore. Film Review Puss in Boots is the epic tale of a cute little cat that you may know from Shrek. You may think that you know a lot about this little cat but believe me, you know nothing until you have seen the movie. I’m not giving anything away but puss may have a dark past he is trying to forget!!! I give this movie 4 and a half stars. Sherlock Holmes is a film about the world famous Sherlock Holmes. Wheatfields School Life | 13 Wheatfields School Life | 13 The Diamond Jubilee takes place this year, marking 60 years of the reign of our Queen Elisabeth II W Diamond Jubilee! hat a spectacular sight! On Sunday 3rd June, over 1000 boats floated down the River Thames to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. Three years of planning had been worthwhile. Despite the torrential rain, the Queen, Prince Phillip and their nearest and dearest stood stoically on the deck of the Spirit of Chartwell– also known as the Royal Barge, and waved to the thousands of well-wishers who crowded the banks of the river, cheering and singing as they passed. The 7-mile-long flotilla started up-river from Battersea Bridge and finished Anna and Francesca down-river from Tower Bridge. As the Royal Barge passed through the Avenue of Sail (made up of traditional Thames sailing boats), a gun salute boomed triumphantly in the sky followed by a fireworks extravaganza. Clanging bells, whistles and tooting horns made for a truly exhilarating event...and in true British style, even the rain did not dampen the crowds spirits. Everyone involved agreed that something as large and spectacular as this would never be seen again on the River Thames. Quiz The Queen was born on 21st April 1926. She was the first child of the Duke and Duchess of York, who were later crowned King George VI and Queen Elisabeth. At the time of her birth, Princess Elizabeth stood third in line to the throne after Edward, Prince of Wales (later King Edward VIII), and her father, The Duke of York. But it was not expected that her father would become King, or that she would become Queen. However, she came to the throne on 6th February, 1952 at the age of 25 and her Coronation took place on 2nd June 1953. 14 | Wheatfields School Life Answers: 1-February 6th 1952; 2-Buckingham Palace; 3-Prince Phillip; 4-Windsor; 5-8 and they are William, Harry, Beatrice, Eugene, Zara, Peter, Louise and James; 6-Union Jack; 7-775 rooms; 8-Once a week on a Tuesday; 9-Corgi dogs ............... 1. After a short train ride, our day began. We started with a tour of the building with a man called Baba who is responsible for looking after school children who visit the Big Lottery Fund. We met on the ground floor and worked our way up the building to the top where the big boss was working very hard...So we crept into a different room to learn about video conferencing, which is when people have a conference with someone on the other side of the world via cameras that transmit images 12 to their tv screens. The Big Lottery Fund gives out millions of pounds of lottery money to charities and ‘good causes’. They have 12 offices around the UK so video conferencing is a cheap way for colleagues to discuss their work. After that, we met the web and design team, who are responsible for making the Big Lottery Fund website and magazine. We discussed our school magazine with Editor, Robert Blow, who gave us lots of good feedback and ideas. Then we interviewed Web Editor, Nicolas Hogg. After that we went to Yo Sushi for lunch (see page 23) It was really cool as the food came out on little conveyor belts. When we returned to the office Stanley’s mum showed us how to design a poster and we each made our own, which you can see around the school. And finally, I’m sure that I speak for all the editors when I say, a big thank you to Cathy MacMurray. These books have sold over 400 MILLION copies! They’ve been translated in 67 different languages! The last four Harry Potter books have been the fastest selling books in history! Even the films are the highest earning films of all time! What is it that makes these stories so special? In 1995, Joanne Rowling finished her novel of Harry Potter and The Philosopher’s Stone. It told the tale of a young, orphaned student called Harry Potter, and his friends, Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley. They all attend Hogwart’s School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Eventually, over the course of seven books, they are involved in many exciting adventures and battles, as they grow up and learn how to master the art of magic. Do you know where the idea for the story came from? JK Rowling came up with the idea of a young boy going to wizard’s school whilst stuck for four hours on a train trip from Manchester to London. Seven years later, her book became a huge success story. So why does everybody like Harry Potter so much? Well, I think that people love imagining a world where magical powers, spells and fantastic creatures are real. It’s also fun being able to picture school life in a very different way. How much fun would it be to have a lesson in transfiguration instead of maths? Or a class on charms instead of history? There are scary villains and interesting characters, and JK Rowling writes lots of believable details about Harry’s world. The films have definitely helped to bring the stories to life. You can even play out your own scenes from Harry Potter with Harry Potter Lego, or cast spells in the Harry Potter videogames. You could even visit the Harry Potter theme park in Florida, or go to Leavesden Studios, near Watford, to tour the sets and see the costumes and props from the films. If you haven’t read any Harry Potter books yet, you should try, as they are great fun. As a big fan of the series, I’m really looking forward to seeing what JK Rowling comes up with next. Jacqueline Wilson Jacqueline Wilson is,by far, my favourite author. I really enjoy reading her books and I suggest you try reading some. She has written many books such as Candyfloss, Secrets,The Bed and Breakfast Star and The Diamond Girls. Fern Stanley The Vampire Hunters A fter visiting our school, the demand for author Pete Johnson’s Vampire books went through the roof! And when you read his stories you will understand why. The Vampire Hunters is the third of his Vampire Trilogy and is about a teenage boy called Marcus who, on his 13th birthday discovers he is a half-vampire. Subsequently, he is attacked by an evil vampire bat and nearly dies after eating a pizza (half-vampires aren’t great with garlic). He also has cravings for his best friend’s blood and writing his secret blog is the only thing that’s kept him sane. There have been some vicious attacks in the local woods and vampire-mad Tallulah thinks a super-vampire is behind them– and she’s desperate to prove it– with a mysterious chain that’s supposed to glow red hot when a vampire is close by. Marcus has a horrible feeling the chain’s going to turn red-hot at any moment. The book is action packed and exciting, with a great twist at the end of the story! Wheatfields School LifeLife | 19 Wheatfields School | 19 In a flash, Lavender is transported to a magical land full of Ugly Uggs, giants as creepy as crocs and rhinocerous fellas. Can she help save the Ugly Uggs from the Ning Nong birds before it is too late? By Jasmine Dalziel with no name S he, Lavender, was just baking pancakes with her mum. Her mum, Mary, asked if she could fetch some more eggs from the cupboard. Lavender replied; “Yes!” and went to the cupboard in search of some eggs. As she returned there was a big flash of light and her mum disappeared. Her little sister, Amy, giggled and carried on playing with her wooden blocks. There was another flash and Amy disappeared. Lavender, who wasn’t afraid of much, cried; “Yes, very funny you can come out now!..” “Guys?!”she shouted. Lavender was now genuinely frightened. Suddenly, she felt a freezing sensation come over her. “BBBBRRRR!!! Where am I?” she asked herself. Horrified, she saw a large black creature approaching out of the mist. Lavender went to hide behind what looked like a nearby tree, but as she got closer she realised that what she thought was a tree was actually some sort of big black polar bear! Lavender screamed and fell over backwards. “This is the land with no name!” a loud voice said before she had time to ask. Terrified, Lavender heard booming voices, 20 | Wheatfields School Life which chanted: “WE ARE THE UGLY UGGS TALL AND WIDE, WE EAT NING NONG EGGS ‘CAUSE THE NING NONG BIRD LIED!!” One Ugly Ugg stepped forward and whispered; “We are becoming extinct though as the Ning Nong Bird pecks out our fur…” Another Ugly Ugg stepped forward and carried on the sentence; “You see, we need our fur to keep warm in these cold climates. Please help us,” he begged. “WOW!” Breathed Lavender, not having listened to a word the Ugly Uggs had said and pointing in the direction of a colourful, colossal bird. “The Ning Nong Bird is coming; “HIDE, RUN, GET AWAY!” “AAAAAAGGGGHHH!!!!!!!” screamed the Ugly Uggs looking in the direction that Lavender was pointing. The Ning Nong Bird is coming; “HIDE, RUN, GET AWAY!” Lavender was startled by all this but hid behind a tree (real this time) like they had asked. As the Ning Nong Bird passed, she heard all of the Ugly Uggs breathe a sigh of relief. The bird was gone and all was calm, or was it?.. …A rather small Ugly Ugg took it’s place and clearly stated: “To rid the Ning Nong bird we have to go on an extremely dangerous quest…” All of the other Ugly Uggs nodded in agreement. “…But remember, this is not a free world, this place is heavily guarded.” Lavender gasped, then jumped up in surprise “I’ve got it!” she exclaimed. “What do the guards look like?” “They look like big rhinoceros fellas… In fact, they are big rhinoceros fellas.” “Yes! I’ve got it.” “Recently I’ve been watching a programme…” “What’s a progthingy?” “Never mind, I’ll tell you later. Anyway, like I said, I’ve been watching a programme on them recently, and it is said that when they are angry they enjoy standing extremely still, so if we made them very angry by trying to get past them they should stay still and let us pass!” “GREAT IDEA!” screeched the Ugly Uggs “LETS GO!” So off they went on their quest to rid the Ning Nong bird. (Their idea worked! Can you believe that?) Though they had to overcome a lot of barriers such as: • The giants as creepy as crocs on mountain rocks; • The boiling temperatures; • The sun; and • The hills were rollercoasters. BUT, the biggest challenge after all was putting all of the ingredients together in the right order. At first, it was a disaster; all the ingredients A day in the life of a cat called Merlin were put in the wrong order and kept having to be rearranged. (Luckily these were solid ingredients that could be rearranged.) The ingredients included: • One leaf from the tree of kindness; • One splinter from the mirror of the miserable merchant; • One giant grain of the best beetlemade compost; • One hair from the Magic Hare. Finally, the potion was ready and taken back to the meeting rock. It was then thrown into the air. Lavender and all the Ugly Uggs dived for shelter. At that very same moment a large group of Ning Nong Birds were passing. The potion landed on them, (one drop on each.) They were immobilized…but just for a millisecond. (No time for a cheer!) What makes it different to other restaurants? Well, first of all, your food comes out from the kitchen freshly prepared on a long conveyor belt. The conveyor belt moves past the tables and you can pick up anything you fancy as it passes you. From hairy prawns to fried fish eggs, to sushi (raw fish) or noodles, it all tastes great! The food is Japanese but if you don’t fancy fish they have other delicious dishes. My favourite is the chicken katsu curry with rice with a red raddish garnish. In some Yo Sushi restaurants the chef will have a work station in the middle of the restaurant and cook the food for you. My favourite thing about Yo Sushi is the ‘Moshi, Moshi’ button! If you press it, it makes a loud ‘Moshi Moshi’ noise, your table lights up and a waiter runs over to see how they can help you.You also have your own special tap at your table to fill your drink as many times as you like (but don’t get carried away as it is not free!). When it comes to paying the bill, the waiters count how many empty plates there are on your table. All in all, it’s great fun so ask your mum or dad to take you next time you are in town. 27 T 26 R O E D I Wheatfields School Life | 23 Stanley taking the zip-wire challenge Trying out the home-made raft rgan Full-English for Mo 6RR ready for action Year 6 adventures at Windmill Hill B y the time you read this, Year 6 will have just returned from our traditional end-of-year trip–PGL.
