Student Chapter Activities
Regular meetings
The Philippine Association of Geology Students (PAGS), which is the SEG Student
Chapter in the Philippines, organized monthly meetings every 2nd week of the month at
the Audio-Visual Room of the National Institute of Geological Sciences, University of the
Philippines, Diliman. During the meetings, the inception, planning and implementation of
activities such as fund-raising events, collaboration with research laboratories and
student organizations in co-organizing conferences and lecture series were discussed. A
logistical framework for the proposed activities was established in order to assign the
committees who will implement the designated tasks.
(A) Induction of newly elected PAGS – SEGSC officers. (B) General Assembly introducing the student
chapter to 3rd year geology students of Adamson University. (C) Inception planning of student chapter
officers and university representatives. (D) Meeting of the officers with the SEG Student Chapter Faculty
Adviser, Dr. Carla B. Dimalanta.
First Philippine Mine Safety and Environment Association (PMSEA)
Student Congress 2015 (PMSEA SC 2015)
The student chapter was invited to participate in the First Student Congress organized by
the Philippine Mine Safety and Environment Association (PMSEA). The event was held
last November 18 – 20, 2015 at the MOFAMCO Multi-Purpose Hall in Baguio City with
the theme “Converge: Converging Students Towards Responsible Mining”. Participants
included geology, mining and metallurgical engineering students from the different
universities in the Philippines. The congress was held to promote and strengthen the
sustainable development advocacies of the Philippine mining industry. The event also
provided a venue for the university students to meet and get to know each other. Different
activities such as Tree Planting, Mining Symposium, Student Research Fair and Minerals
Industry Parade were conducted.
(A) Student chapter members joined the Minerals Industry Parade as part of the activities in the 1st PMSEA
Student Congress in Baguio City. (B) Ms. Ana Marie Binuya, current SEG Student Chapter President
planting a pine tree seedling during the event. (C) Mr. Alfred Elmer Buena (left), former SEG Student
Chapter President, presented a paper at the PMSEA Student Congress Research Fair. His paper on “Multianalytical approach in epithermal gold exploration: Clues to establishing mineralization proxies” discussed
some proxies which may be useful in exploration targeting.
Student Chapter Fieldtrip
The chapter was awarded the Stewart R. Wallace Fund (Round I, 2015) in the amount of
500 USD. Through this grant, a fieldtrip was conducted in the Baguio Mineral District, one
of the most prolific mineral districts in the Philippines in terms of gold and copper. The
fieldtrip was held last November 20, 2015. Twenty student chapter members participated
in the fieldtrip which was facilitated by Dr. Karlo L. Queaño, exploration geologist of Apex
Mining Co. Inc. An overview of the geology and mineralization potential of the Baguio
Mineral District was provided by Dr. Queaño. Rock exposures of the Mirador Limestone
and Klondyke Formation were visited. These sedimentary rocks overlie the mineralized
district and play a crucial role in understanding the overall tectonics of the region and its
implication on the mineralization in the Baguio Mineral District. The splay of the Philippine
Fault Zone (PFZ) and how it affects the geomorphology of the area was also observed,
The PFZ was discussed due to its proposed association with the distribution of the
different deposits in the Baguio Mineral District.

Mineral District. (B) Field trip participants with a panoramic view of the Baguio Mineral District.
2016 Hunt for Ore Deposits: Emerging Trends
The Rushurgent Working Group of the National Institute of Geological Sciences,
University of the Philippines convened the “2016 Hunt for Ore Deposits: Emerging
Trends”, an international symposium held at the Grand Regal Hotel in Davao City last
January 25 – 26, 2016. Aside from papers that dealt with the search for different ore
deposits, papers on environmental monitoring and community development in miningareas were also presented. The 29 oral and 15 poster presentations during the
symposium covered topics that included new exploration techniques (such as the
integration and processing of multiple geophysical parameters in delineating ore bodies,
application of new statistical treatments in multi-element geochemical exploration) and
ore grade evaluation. This scientific gathering was attended by around local and foreign
representatives from the academe, mining and exploration companies, government
agencies. Members of the SEG Student Chapter (undergraduate and graduate geology
students from the University of Southeastern Philippines, University of the Philippines and
Kyushu University) were among the participants. The student chapter members also
provided logistical support to the Organizing Committee of the symposium. Some of the
members also gave oral and poster presentations during the symposium.
SEG Student Chapter members from the University of the Philippines and University of Southeastern
Philippines were among the participants to the international symposium held in Davao City, Mindanao,
Philippines.
Participants to the symposium comprised of local and foreign geologists from the academe, mining and
exploration companies and government agencies.

and Geosciences Bureau Region XI, Engr. Wilfredo Moncano. (Middle) SEG Student Chapter Industry
Adviser, Dr. Graciano P. Yumul Jr. gave a plenary presentation on the adakite and gold-copper
mineralization relationship in Masara, Compostela Valley. (Right) Mr. Douglas Kirwin, SEG Mentor,
presented an overview of porphyry copper-gold deposits in Eastern Mindanao.
Geo-lecture series: Reinforcing Foundations
The student chapter also co-organized a seminar entitled “Geo-lecture series: Reinforcing
Foundations”. The Geo-lecture series is part of the Information and Education Campaign
(IEC) of the Rushurgent Working Group of the National Institute of Geological Sciences,
University of the Philippines. The IEC was conducted last January 26, 2016 at the
University of Southeastern Philippines (USEP), Davao City, Philippines. Around 150
junior and senior geology undergraduate students of USEP participated in the lecture
series. Lectures on the overview and fundamentals of exploration geophysics,
geohazards, geochemistry and active tectonics were provided by Dr. Carla B. Dimalanta
(SEG Student Chapter Faculty Adviser), Dr. Decibel V. Faustino-Eslava, Dr. Betchaida
D. Payot and Dr. Noelynna T. Ramos, respectively. Mr. Doug Kirwin, SEG mentor and
independent consultant with over 35 years of international experience in mineral
exploration was also invited. He gave a lecture on the principles of epithermal gold
exploration and illustrated examples of different epithermal deposits in the world.
Simultaneous lectures were given by the UP Professors: (A) Dr. Betchaida D. Payot gave a lecture on the
fundamentals of geochemistry. (B) Dr. Decibel V. Faustino-Eslava elaborated on the concepts of

Mt. Tagapo Day Hike
An outdoor activity was conducted by the executive committee of the PAGS-SEGSC last
August 24, 2016 at Mt. Tagapo, Talim Island, Binangonan, Rizal. The participants
comprised mostly of the newly registered members of the student chapter.
Mt. Tagapo (also known as Mt. Susong Dalaga) is a conical-shaped mountain situated
along the Laguna Lake, which is the largest inland water located in Region IV
CALABARZON. Talim Island is underlain by the Antipolo Basalt, which is primarily
composed of Pleistocene basaltic rocks. From the peak, the members saw Mt. Arayat,
Makiling, Maculot, Banahaw and Sembrano and other nearby mountains. The climbing
activity gave the new members of the organization a chance to be acquainted with the
current members.
New members of the SEG Student Chapter joined the Mt. Tagapo Day Hike conducted last August
24, 2016.
Future Plans
The student chapter plans to organize the 1st PAGS-SEGSC Inter-High School Quiz Bee,
