Letter from CVEF Board of Trustees President
Dear Springwood Family,
Springwood has a rich history of impacting lives. Our faculty and staff are the
foundation for Springwood’s excellence and we’re grateful for their hard work
and commitment to our students. As you read this report, the importance of
Springwood to this community will be apparent.
Rick Johnson is in his fourth year as Headmaster at Springwood. He is a man who
has dedicated his life's work to students. Mr. Johnson has also demonstrated the
business acumen that has helped to re-establish our school's financial stability.
Under his leadership programs and schools, including Springwood, have grown
and prospered; many students have achieved academic and personal distinction.

It is my pleasure to serve on a diverse board that brings wisdom to any situation. We are fortunate to have a lawyer, doctor, former educators, a public
education administrator, and local businesspeople on the CVEF Board. We are
committed to our mission of providing a strong education in a nurturing Christian
environment, educating with a balance of mind, body, and spirit.
Springwood faces challenges as we look forward. Our area continues to see
population decline and our demographics have not improved. Your support is
vital to this institution. Please know that you are appreciated.
Springwood will continue to stand apart as a school that provides a superior
education and prepares our students to achieve their dreams.

Tom Oswalt is the current President of the
Board of Trustees. Tom graduated from the
University of Georgia with a Bachelor of
Science in Education. He has been the owner
of West Point Shoe Outlet for 19 years. Mr.
Oswalt is married to Susan and they have
two children both of whom are students at
Springwood. Andrew a senior and Josh an
eighth grader. Mr. Oswalt’s association with
Springwood now stretches 20 years. He
served initially as the head boys basketball
coach in the late 90s and has remained involved with the school in different capacities.
He has served as a community coach in both
football and basketball as well as Athletic
Club President for two years. Tom has served
on the CVEF Board for the past three years
and in June was elected by the Board as the
President. Tom is an avid outdoorsmen and
enjoys spending time with his family.

Message from the Headmaster
Dear Springwood Families & Supporters:
It was an honor to serve as Headmaster of Springwood School for the third year, and to work alongside those on the Springwood educational team as we completed the 45th year of the School’s operation. Looking back on 2014-15, I am extremely
grateful to everyone who gave of their time, talent, and treasure to help Springwood. I can assure you, as we experienced
another remarkable year, we were mindful to be wise with all contributions monetarily and otherwise. Springwood is
certainly a worthwhile and significant investment aimed at educating our students and impacting families in the process.
The results of the past year proved in a resounding manner that Springwood is exemplary in academic and extracurricular
performance. The accomplishments of our students and staff, many of which you will read about in this report, allowed
Springwood School to win the AISA President’s Award and also to be named an AISA Blue Ribbon School for the fourth
straight year. Both of these awards are focused on the core product of a school…the education of our students.
As you might suspect with achievements like this, we were inundated last spring and summer with inquiries, resulting in an
enrollment increase for the second straight year. This growth has occurred not only at the start of school, but also continued
through the past four semesters.
We gratefully acknowledge the work of the CVEF Board of Trustees. One has completed his time, and we express our
appreciation to Alan Kemper for his two years of service. Ellen Collins remains on the Board of Trustees as Vice-President,
and we want to express our gratitude to her for the past four years of leadership as President of the CVEF. Ellen has few
peers when you consider the passion and love she has for Springwood.
Now as we embark on the 2015-16 school year, we are asking our ‘team’ to focus on Proverbs 23:12…“Apply your heart to
instruction, and your ears to words of knowledge.” Our faculty and staff regularly demonstrate love and concern for our
students to continue to be shaped into the people God desires them to be.
In closing, I want to share good news that Springwood continues to be positioned well for our future. We are trusting, as
we seek the Lord’s direction, we will see Him bless our efforts. We invite everyone to Come and See the many great things

Lanett with his family during the summer of 2011 and began attending Springwood School as a freshman.

Headmaster, Mr. Rick Johnson. "In many ways Chris represents
the Springwood experience. Along with this tremendous academic
accomplishment, he competes in athletics, plays a role on the award
-winning Robotics team, and demonstrates fine character with his
teachers and peers.”

attended the school since kindergarten. Catherine is the daughter of
Jason and Dr. Jennie McClendon of Lanett. Jason McClendon is a
Springwood Alumnus from the Class of 1983.
Mr. Johnson stated, “Catherine diligently strives to be an outstanding student. To qualify in the top 5% of students on a national level
is a remarkable accomplishment. Through her performance in the
classroom, along with her participation in scholar’s bowl, robotics,
and varsity tennis, Catherine displays the ideals of Springwood as
we help students develop with a balance of mind, body, and spirit.”

AISA ANNOUNCES SPRINGWOOD SCHOOL
AS AISA'S CLASS AA PRESIDENT'S AWARD WINNER FOR 2014-2015
The Alabama Independent School Association is pleased to announce that SPRINGWOOD SCHOOL is the recipient of the
AISA Class AA PRESIDENT'S AWARD designation for the 2014-2015 school year. The President's Award was established
by the AISA for the specific purpose of recognizing member schools that achieve academic excellence during the school year.
This award also serves as a symbol of recognition to the individuals who have given unselfishly of their time to serve as President to the Alabama Independent School Association.
The criteria for winning the AISA President's Award includes achievement in all areas of school excellence such as: standardized testing, scholarships, academic scholars, academic competitions, professional personnel standards and development, accreditation, and other activities that celebrate excellence in academics.
The AISA has been steadfast in its efforts since 1970 to maintain an organization of independently operated non-public schools
that are rich in diversity, committed to academic excellence, and deeply concerned about the growth and development of children and youth. The association’s goal is to provide quality educational opportunities for those parents choosing an alternative
to public education.
The AISA PRESIDENT'S AWARD program is sponsored by the AISA to recognize member schools with outstanding educational programs. Smith Collins—2015 “Bobbie Gene Hamrick” Alumni Scholarship Recipient
2015 Springwood graduate, Smith Collins, was the recipient of the “Bobbie Gene Hamrick” Alumni Scholarship. Smith is the
son of Tony and Ellen Lanier ‘77 Collins. He is a freshman attending Colorado State University, studying Electrical Engineering,
where he received the Colorado State University Provost’s Scholarship. Smith was a well-rounded Springwood student who
participating in a variety of sports and extracurricular activities and achieved above average grades in all academic areas. Smith
was a leader at school, in his church and community, and in the scouting program, completing his Eagle Scout project during his
senior year.
To apply for this $1,000 college scholarship, a graduating Springwood senior must be a son, daughter, brother, sister, or grandchild of a Springwood alum. As part of the application process, each applicant must write a 500-word essay on “What a Springwood Education has Meant to Me”. The scholarship selection committee believed that Smith Collins represented the spirit and
ideals of Springwood School and were honored to present this year’s scholarship to him at the Honors Day ceremony in May.
Below is an excerpt from Smith’s essay.
“Springwood was founded on Christian values aimed not only at creating great
students, but also molding them into better leaders and morally strong citizens.
The basic founding principles, employed for all of these years , are still emphasized today and that is why Springwood continues to prepare students so well
for life after school. It has been exciting to attend such a place that is all about
making my fellow students and me successful in our life beyond high school.
Springwood sets a standard of excellence and has been a significant factor in
laying out a plan of success in my life.”

Achieving the highest academic
honor for the Class of 2015 and
earning the Valedictorian
recognition was Tanner Martin.
Tanner is the son of Dr. Patrick
and Traci Frazer ‘85 Martin of
West Point. Achieving the
second highest honor for the
Class of 2015 and earning the
Salutatorian recognition was
Catherine McClendon.
Catherine is the daughter of
Jason ‘83 and Dr. Jennie
McClendon of Lanett.
Tanner and Catherine are
attending Auburn University,
where they both received
Presidential Scholarships, the
highest achievement scholarships given at Auburn. The
Presidential Scholarships are
awarded for tuition for four
years for a total of $35,368.00
per student. Additionally from
Auburn, Tanner received the
Auburn University Colonel Donald Jones Endowed Scholarship
from the Department of Science and Mathematics for
$1,000.00. Catherine also was
awarded the Auburn University
Charles R. Horton D.V.M.
Annual Scholarship for
$1,000.00. Additional scholarships were given to these two
bright students.

their senior class and participated in every aspect of
student life including Scholars
Bowl Team, SGA, Robotics,
National Honor Society, and
various sports. Both students
were voted “Most Likely to
Succeed” by their classmates.
We wish Tanner and Catherine

successful basketball
season with a State

had a 23-4 win/loss
record (one shy of the
school record), a State
Runner-up finish (sixth in
school history), back-toback Final Fours, a Region
Championship (first at
Springwood in 11 years),
a 16-game winning streak,
and 2 in-season tournament championships.

The Springwood boys team finished 3rd and girls team finished 5th in
state competition. Ananth Reddy was state runner-up in boys singles.
State Qualifying Golf Team
The Springwood Golf Team made it to the AISA State
Golf tournament for the first time in 14 years. Low
for Springwood was Smith Collins. The Golf team
finished 7th out of 14 competing teams.

Springwood offers students from foreign countries a challenging academic program and an enriching experience in the American way of life
through living with a host family. The foreign students who come to
Springwood are able to greatly improve their English through total
immersion in an English speaking environment. Most of the international students who attend Springwood come to the United States on an F-1
Student Visa for the experience of one school year abroad and then
they return to their home country to continue their studies. However
Zhiyu (Yu) Rao from China, a 2013 Springwoood exchange student is
currently attending college at the University of Alabama. Also Thanh
Tuyen (Rosie) Truong from Viet Nam, now in her 12th grade year at
Springwood plans to attend college in the United States.

Do you have a big heart and extra room? Are you curious about other cultures and willing to share the American experience with international students? If you are interested in finding out more about how to host an international student or would like more information on this
wonderful opportunity, please contact Springwood. International students have their own insurance and spending money and they can
speak English. Host families receive a monthly stipend, orientation, and 24/7 local and national support.

The average annual cost to educate
one Springwood student in 2014-15
was $9,916. $2,784 of this cost for each
student was covered by contributions
from the CVEF. The remaining $7,132
was covered by tuition and other
revenue. Due to increases in revenue
generated by school initiatives, the
supplement provided by the CVEF was
reduced by $1,000 per student from
the 2013-14 school year.
Springwood School is owned and operated
by the Chattahoochee Valley Educational
Foundation, Inc., a 501 c(3) private foundation under the Rules and Regulations of the
Internal Revenue Service. All contributions
to Springwood School or the CVEF are tax
deductible and can be made to the foundation or the school.
The Annual Fund is the most important fundraising effort at Springwood School
each year. The school relies on voluntary, tax-deductible contributions to make
up the difference between the actual cost to educate a Springwood student and the cost of tuition. If you are already
an Annual Fund supporter, thank you in advance. If you have not supported with annual giving in the past, please consider

2014 Athletic Hall of Fame Induction:
Christopher Beaird—Class of 1999
Christopher Beaird, Springwood Class of 1999, was inducted into the Athletic Hall
of Fame at the 2014 Homecoming game. Chris’s athleticism and credentials
while at Springwood speak for themselves, but what stood out more than championships and awards were his winning attitude, relentless determination, and
team spirit. Chris represented Springwood on the football field, basketball court,
and baseball fields, and excelled in all during high school.
Christopher Beaird was a four-year football starter for Coach Roddie Beck.
Springwood’s overall record the four years that he played football was 40 – 8.

Two of these years, Springwood finished as State Runner-up and was in the

coach, Roddie Beck commented “Chris led the team by example through his hard
work and dedication each and every week. His desire to learn and understand the game was like having another coach on the
field. Christopher was the type of student-athlete that every coach enjoys having on their team. It was an honor to coach him.”
Chris’s senior year, he was selected as an AISA All-Star Player in three sports – football, basketball, and baseball. He was named
Valley Times News Co-Offensive Football Player of the Year, selected as an Opelika-Auburn News Student Athlete and named
“Most Athletic” by his class.
While he was an outstanding football player, everyone knew that Chris’s “true love” was baseball. He held the team’s highest
batting average each year 1996 through 1999. Chris received the Springwood Golden Glove Award twice. He was named Captain and Most Valuable Player of the team his junior and senior year. Chris Beaird was an important member of the 1998 and
1999 State Championship Teams coached by his dad, David Beaird, and Coach Jamie Morrison. Coach Morrison remembers that
Chris had an incredible “will to not to lose” which he demonstrated on the baseball field each and every day. Coach Morrison
said “good players have a tendency to be a little cocky (for lack of a better word) but not so with Chris. He was never too high or
too low. He led his teammates by example.” Chris was a player that any coach would love to have on a team. I am thankful that
I had the opportunity to coach him.”
The baseball team’s record in 1998 was 22-4 and they were undefeated in the State Championship tournament. Their record in
1999 was 26-2. After losing their first game, Chris and his teammates came back through the losers’ bracket and defeated Wilcox twice to win the last game in a dramatic fashion. Christopher hit a 3-run game tying home run in the bottom of the sixth
inning putting them in a position to go on to win the state championship for the second straight year.
Chris’s baseball career continued to college when he received a baseball scholarship to Auburn University. He was a member of
the Auburn Tigers baseball team in 2000 and 2001.
Young Alumni Spotlight: Art Wood, Springwood Class of 2014, Sophomore at the University of Alabama
Following his graduation from Springwood, Art Wood began at the
University of Alabama, Fall 2014, in the College of Commerce and
Business Administration, majoring in Accounting, minoring in Human
Development and Family Studies. As a freshman, Art became greatly
involved in not only the Alabama campus but in the surrounding community. Art’s first year he was part of a group called Freshman Forum
that met routinely for about 5 months discussing different issues that
were important in not only the Tuscaloosa community, but also in the
world. Freshman Forum had many guest speakers who talked to the
students about leadership in the community. His sophomore year, Art
has already been a leader for Camp 1831, a 200 person freshmen
camp organized through the office of FYE (First Year Experience and
Parent Programs). Also he has become a part of other organizations
on campus, including the Criminal Justice Student Organization, FATE
(Future Alumni of Tradition and Excellence),
College Republicans, and Crimson Chaos.
Art attends the Church of the Highlands on
the Tuscaloosa campus where each Sunday morning he participates as a greeter.
Art has also become involved off campus
in the City of Tuscaloosa. He is currently
working at the District Attorney’s office in
downtown. He helps find and put away
files for each docket that is upcoming or
has already gone through. Art says “With
this responsibility, I get the opportunity
to sit in on court cases and tour the
surrounding jails.”
Chad Young, Class of 1992
2014-15 Distinguished Alumnus
On January 6, 2015 Springwood alumnus, Chad Young,
was presented the 2014-15 Springwood Distinguished
Alumnus award. The award has been given annually since
1999 at Springwood to an individual who has made an
outstanding contribution through his vocation or who
deserves to be recognized for exceptional achievement
in some field or endeavor. With currently over 900
alumni, Springwood has many, many individuals who are
worthy of receiving a nomination for this award. Usually
a nomination is made by another Springwood alum or by
a Springwood faculty member. In July of 2014, Mr. Dale
Freeman submitted a nomination for Chad Young.
Below is Mr. Freeman’s nomination letter:
Chad has distinguished himself – and his alma mater –
through dedicated work in the Campus Crusade for Christ.
During the last year, he has been promoted to the position of
director/coordinator of that organization’s Southeast region.
Based in Atlanta, Chad serves as the driving spirit for the
Campus Crusade for Christ throughout a sizable territory.
Father of four, the youngest an adoptee from Central America, Chad is a published author. He epitomizes what we wish
for all of our alumni – a wholesome, productive, fulfilling life.
While at Springwood, Chad enlivened the campus atmosphere with his compassion, his talent, his wit, and his
youthful exuberance (which was occasionally expressed as
“tasteful” mischief). He was admired by many for his
intelligence, his diligence, and his unwavering school spirit.
A talented athlete, Chad suffered a career-ending injury to
his right knee on the gridiron. I recall that the Playcrafters
Drama Team were at the time in rehearsal of a play (Get
Shakespeare on the Stage) and was one male short of a full
cast. I made a deal with Chad: if he would perform in the
play, I would go with him to all of the football games, take
notes, and teach him to write news articles for the Valley
Times. He accepted the deal, we worked together, and he
became a very able sports reporter, though he did not become
rich as such. (I seem to recall that he was paid fifty cents per
column inch.)

Mr. Chad Young was Springwood’s guest speaker for Winter
Renewal in January. The purpose of Winter Renewal is to
pause at the outset of the new calendar year, as well as the
beginning of the new semester, to consider things that are
Godly and good. As a graduate of Springwood and with the
work Chad Young does with CRU in the southeastern United
States, he provided great insight for our students to “get
out of the boat” and walk in their faith.

experiences such as that which have made, for me, teaching
the best job in the world!
As I said earlier, Chad Young epitomizes the character and
the accomplishments we strive to produce at Springwood.
He has distinguished himself as a person, a father, and a
husband; and he makes a major contribution to the betterment of the world. I enthusiastically submit to you his

Chad Young works in full-time college ministry, serving as Cru
Global’s national director over the southeast region, leading
the ministries in FL, GA, AL, and MS. He has served on the staff
of Cru for 13 years. He is the author of Authenticity: Real Faith
in a Phony, Superficial World, a discipleChad became an enthusiastic thespian, winning several
ship-training manual, and magazine
awards in district and state drama competitions. The high- articles for Worldwide Challenge and
light of his dramatic endeavors was his portrayal of Charlie

CLASS OF 2005: Catching up with 13 Classmates 10 years after Graduation!
Stephen Bolton graduated from Auburn University with a degree
in Business Entrepreneurship and then received a second Auburn
degree in Nutrition in 2014. He lives in Auburn and continues to work
hard to develop Bolt Movers and Bolt Health. As Bolt Movers continues to grow they hope to expand to a new city in 2016.
Emma Ashburner Cook earned
a Master of Science degree in
Nutrition from Auburn and
completed a dietetic internship
through Auburn as well. In June
2015, she passed the exam to
become a Registered Dietitian.
She is now employed with
Sodexo at the Mayo Clinic
Health System in Waycross, GA
as a Clinical Dietitian. She is married to Adam Cook and they have
three children Lawson (5), Fischer (4), and Quinn (2). The Cooks have
just moved from West Point to Waycross and are excited about their
new opportunity.
Kacey Lovelace Daniel has a newborn son named Troy Nolan Daniel.
He was born on September 24, 2015 at 3:35 pm, weighed 7 lbs. 8
oz. and was 20.5 inches long. Troy has two big brothers, Christian (6)
and Braxton (5). Kacey is married to Eric Daniel and they live in Opelika. Kacey is a medical assistant at Auburn Pediatric & Adult Medicine and Eric works at Southern States Bank and is also a member of
the Army National Guard as an EOD (explosive ordinance device)
tech.
Meredith McCoy Fink married her college sweetheart, Danny Fink,
on July 21, 2012. Since graduating from Auburn University in 2011
with a degree in secondary mathematics education, Meredith has
been teaching 7th and 8th grade math at Southside Middle School in
Tallassee, AL. On March 26 at 9:23 p.m. , Meredith and Danny welcomed their first child, Daisy Catherine into the world. Daisy was 8
lbs. 2 oz. and 21 inches long. Meredith and her family reside in
Auburn, AL.
Ben Hamilton is the General Manager of Johnny’s New York Style
Pizza in West Point. He and his business partner are in the process of
purchasing the building that Johnny's is located in and adding a banquet/business training room. Ben and his dog, Remy, live in Lanett.
Michael Hixon married Tory Bock from
Mobile this past May. They met while in
school at Auburn University. Michael and
Tory live in Mountain Brook, AL with their
two dogs, Murphy and Maddox. Michael
is the After Sales & Logistics Manager at
SCA Performance in Trussville, AL. Tory is
a Behavioral Analyst for The Arc of Jefferson County. Both Michael and Tory serve
as Junior Board members for the Autism
Society of Alabama and actively volunteer
with this organization.
Hadley Miller graduated cum laude from Washington & Lee University in 2009 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. After
college, Hadley was selected to join the Teach for America program
which recruits recent college graduates to teach in under-resourced
public schools. She taught 5th grade for two years in an elementary
charter school in Memphis, TN. After completing her two year teaching commitment, Hadley accepted a job with Diversified Trust Company in Memphis. Hadley currently serves as the President of the Mid
-South Chapter of Washington and Lee Alumni and continues to support Teach for America by serving as a City Ambassador. In her spare
time, Hadley enjoys running and practicing yoga. She plans to run the
full St. Jude Marathon in December. Hadley is married to Ryan Miller.
Jenna Morrison Perry and her family
live in Opelika. Jenna has been working
at JoAnn Stores Distribution Center in
Opelika for almost 2 years. Her husband,
Lane works for the Norfolk Southern
Railroad. Their daughter Kennady turned
two last June.
Chris Trammell graduated from Auburn
University in 2011 with a Bachelor of Arts
degree in Communication. He married
Brooklyn Cannon in July of 2013. They
live in Auburn and had their first baby, a
son, Beckett on September 17, 2015.
Beckett weighed 7 lbs. and 4 oz. Chris is
employed with Mobile Fixture and Mt.
Zion Baptist Church, both in Columbus
Georgia.
Kathryn (Katie) Turner After graduating summa cum laude from the
University of Georgia with dual degrees in Biology and Psychology,
she earned a PhD in Neuroscience from the University of Alabama at
Birmingham in 2013. She then made the move to New York City to
work for New York University as a research scientist. She is currently
residing in Manhattan and works as a Copywriter for Flashpoint
Medica, a pharmaceutical advertising agency. She also enjoys
attending Broadway shows and jogging in
Central Park.
Josh Watson married his wife, Hannah
Beth, on June 30, 2012. They lived in
Salem, AR until last summer when they
moved to Helena, AL. Josh is now coaching
and teaching science at Hoover High School
and Hannah is teaching 5th grade in a
Hoover elementary school. Josh graduated
from LaGrange College with a B.A. in Biology and a M.A.T. in Secondary Education.
Kim Ward graduated from Auburn University
with a B.A. in Psychology with a minor in human
Development and Family Studies. She will graduate from Auburn University Montgomery in May
with a Masters degree in Childhood Education.
Angela Sullivan and Adam White were married in
August of 2010. They live in Opelika where Adam
is a Financial Analyst at JoAnn Stores Distribution
and Angela is a stay-at-home mom to Asher (3)
and Ava Grace (5 months). Ava Grace was born
on May 17th of this year. She weighed 7lbs. 3oz.

School varsity head football coach. Before accepting the Eufaula position, Bryan served as the Opelika High School varsity football offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for four seasons and also an
11th grade U.S. History teacher. He coached the freshmen team for
two years and tight ends and wide receivers for two years before
Katie Lyons, Class of 2008, graduated magna
cum laude from Auburn University's Harrison
School of Pharmacy on May 12, 2015 with a
Doctor of Pharmacy degree. She also holds an
undergraduate degree in biomedical sciences
from Auburn. Katie is presently in Montgomery,
Alabama completing a year-long PGY1 pharmacy residency at Baptist Medical Center South.
Jake Key , Class of 2009, graduated Cum Laude
from LaGrange College with a Bachelor of Arts in History in May 2013.
He is currently in his third and final year of law school at Samford
University's Cumberland School of Law and will graduate with his JD
in May 2016.
Patrick Bolton, Class of 2010, graduated from Auburn University in
August, 2014. He works shoulder to shoulder with his brother
Stephen in their businesses, Bolt Health and Bolt Movers.
Merrielle McCoy , Class of 2011, is in her final semester of nursing
school at Auburn Montgomery and will graduate with her BSN
(Bachelor of Science in Nursing) in December 2015. She will be
working in the GISO (gastrointestinal surgical oncology) unit at UAB
Hospital after graduation.

Focus on Upcoming College Graduate:
Carson Smith, Springwood Class of 2011
Carson Smith is in her fifth year at
Auburn University studying Civil
Engineering with a focus in sustainable construction. At Auburn she
has been involved in several on
campus organizations, including a
social sorority, Kappa Kappa
Gamma. She has also served on
a “committee of 19” which is a
student led initiative on the war on
hunger, that raises money for the
Alabama food bank and for boxed
meals for local soup kitchens.
Carson’s biggest involvement
however has been with Auburn’s Engineers Without Borders
chapter. Since joining the organization during her sophomore
year, Carson has served on three project teams for a community in Quesimpuco, Bolivia as well as served on their executive board for two years. Carson assisted in the designs of
an irrigation system for their farmlands, a simple washing
machine, and a solar shower. She had the opportunity to
travel to this community twice to implement these three
projects. With a focus on community development and
sustainability, EWB works alongside the community while
building and installing their projects so that they know how
to use and maintain what has been designed for them. “EWB
has been the best engineering and overall experience I’ve had
at Auburn” said Carson.
Despite being so involved, she has kept a high focus on her
studies. Carson is a member of the Honors College at Auburn.
As a junior she was invited to join the Civil Engineering Honor
Society, Chi Epsilon. Carson went on to serve on the executive
board of this honor society. Recently she was awarded the
prestigious Stone Leadership Award for Civil Engineering. It is
given to a student whose leadership goes beyond the department of Civil Engineering.
Between semesters Carson has interned with two companies,
Next Step Ministries and Turner Construction Company. While
working with Next Step, Carson served on the construction
team and led weekly volunteers in the reconstruction of a roof
affected by Hurricane Katrina in Perkinston, Mississippi. During
the summer of 2015, Carson worked with Turner Construction
Company on their Three Alliance Project in Buckhead. During
this internship she served as a field engineer and received
hands on experience of what it is like to manage a large scale
construction project.
Carson will graduate December 12th with a Bachelor of Civil
Engineer and a minor in Business. After graduation she has
plans to move to Atlanta to start her full time position as a
field engineer with Turner Construction Company. As a field
engineer, she will coordinate efforts between subcontractors,
architects and structural engineers within the specific project
she is assigned to. Her office will be on site with full access to
both the construction site and all personnel involved in the
project. Carson said “I look forward to starting my career and
to see where it takes me in the future.”
