Doodlebug Club Doodlebug Club of Franklin will be joining the parade at The the Afton Fair on Saturday, July 14 this year. Originating with ten members early in 1999, “The Doodlebug Club of Franklin, NY” has since experienced tremendous growth and popularity. Many local parades and community fund raising events have been host to the club, which now includes well over 30 participants. With common interest to restore, share, and enjoy these homemade antique tractors, the dedicated club members preserve and display an important part of our American economic history. This marks the 13th year of operation as an immensely enjoyable and worthwhile organization, with great contributions to historical interest, community support, and all around good times for the viewing public an our members and families. What is a Doodlebug? A Doodlebug tractor is the colloquial name for a homemade tractor made in the United States during World War II when production tractors were in short supply. The Doodlebug, was a nickname for the aftermarket tractor kit made by David Bradley, “The old DB”. The conversion kits were expensive, some as much as $300. Magazines such as “Popular Mechanics” provided instructions for building a “Handy Henry” from that old Ford sitting in your back yard, which cost about $20.00. The farmers used Model T’s and Model A’s with two transmissions, truck rear ends, and big rear tires. These Doodlebugs were used to plow, made hay, haul logs, and pull out stumps. You still see many examples of the doodlebug in upstate NY and New England. Best of Luck to the Afton Fair Directors & Committees for a successful year, and Good Luck to all participants!
