NORTH/WEST EL DORADO COUNTY
This is where it all began… The California Gold
Rush. It was here, on January 24, 1848, that
James Marshall discovered gold, touching off the
largest gold rush in history. This singular event
not only changed fate of California, but the
entire nation. Today visitors continue to discover
gold along Historic Highway 49 as the Coloma
Valley and Georgetown Divide area has become
popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts. The
South Fork of the American River provides action
packed whitewater experiences, miles of trails, off
road excursions, wine tasting amidst breathtaking
scenery. The rich history provides a colorful
backdrop for this world-class destination. And
if it is true that history repeats itself, you have
definitely come to the right place!

Dog Friendly Places Here’s the scoop
Pointed Rocks Trail to
No Hands Bridge Olmstead Loop
Auburn State Recreation Area
Excerpts taken from 48 Dog Friendly Trails by Debi Preston
T
PHOTO: GIBSON VISUALS
EL DORADO COUNTY
he Olmstead Loop Trail is especially popular in the springtime when wildflowers are in bloom, ponds and vernal
pools are visible, and over 50 species of birds can be seen.
In December enjoy great vistas and perfect trail conditions.
Note: The leash law is strictly enforced here. Hikers risk being
ticketed if dogs are observed off leash.
Length: 6.5 mile loop (Rolling hills for the most part except on
800-foot descent and the return ascent)
Difficulty: 3
Trailhead/Parking: Trailhead and parking are behind the fire station in Cool. Take Hwy 49 south to Cool and turn right just before
the fire station and blinking red light. First lot is for cars only and
second is for horse trailers. Trailhead is across the street. There is a
$10.00 use fee.
Description: Start at the Olmstead Loop Trailhead in the
reverse direction (9.0 mile mark) along Highway 49 for a short time
before heading west away from the road. Follow the green State
Park post marker at each of the 4 junctions and stay on Olmstead
Loop Trail.
In 1.3 miles you will see a field of boulders known as Pointed
Rocks. When you come to the junction with Training Hill Trail.
You will leave Olmstead Loop here and take this trail to the right.
After you pass the sign warning of the .9-mile steep downhill you
will be treated to great views of the Foresthill Bridge and distant
mountains. At trails end you will come to “No Hands Bridge,” also
known as Mountain Quarries Railroad Bridge crossing the North
Fork American River. A marker across the bridge gives interesting
historical information.
There are several nice picnic spots in this area. On the return trip
you will take the same route but instead of going up training hill
turn left onto Western States Trail (WST) 3.3 miles to Cool. At the
7.5 state mile marker, veer left along the old fence line and follow
this trail back onto Olmstead. Go left there and retrace your route
back to the parking area.
Before you visit an establishment, please contact them and verify that
they are still dog-friendly and available, as policies and management
change frequently. All places listed require your dog to be leashed and
under your direct control including parks and trails unless otherwise
specified.
Look for this friendly paw print throughout this guide to
identify many dog friendly businesses and experience
some pooch-pleasing fun. In addition to the miles of
scenic hiking trails, the area offers dog friendly shopping,
wine tasting, gold panning, dining and accommodations. Most
farms and ranches extend a welcoming paw to well-behaved pets
on a leash.

Placerville
NORTH / WEST EL DORADO COUNTY
Placerville, historically known as “Hangtown,” is a
charming town rich with history named after the placer
gold deposits found in its river beds and hills during
the Gold Rush of the 1840s. Today, Historic
Main Street has the most unique and diverse
shopping district in the area, woven amongst
businesses that date back over 100 years
such as Placerville Hardware (the oldest
hardware store west of the Mississippi),
Placerville News, Combellack’s, Randolph
Jewelers and the Cary House. Today, it
still serves as a gathering place
for parades, celebrations and
other special events.

John M. Studebaker
O
riginally a blacksmith from South Bend,
Indiana, a young John M. Studebaker
came to Placerville (formerly known as
Old Hangtown), California hoping to strike it
rich. Like so many others of the time he soon
learned that gold was scarce by that time and
volunteered to help a local blacksmith make
wheelbarrows for the miners for $10 each.
Having never made a wheelbarrow before,
cumbersome. But he was a quick learner and
quickly became famous for his well-made
wheelbarrows that “stood up”. With waiting
lists for his many orders, he became known
as “Wheelbarrow John.”
million-dollar automobile company. He never forgot “Old
Hangtown” and returned to Placerville in 1912. The town
threw a three-day party to celebrate the man who helped
change the transportation industry.
In fact we are still celebrating the Studebaker success
story with the John Studebaker International Wheelbarrow
Races. Now in it’s 70th year, the event is held annually in
June during El Dorado County fair in Placerville. Armed with
nothing more than a wheelbarrow, a sack and a gold pan,
up their sack, then push their loaded wheelbarrows through a
messy, grueling obstacle course in a series of races while
a grandstand full of spectators cheer them on.
Yep, still got that pioneer spirit!
Thanks Johnnie…

T
he elevation range on the eastern side of El Dorado County assures
four-season fun throughout the year. Camino was originally a
lumber mill town and had a reputation as the Sugar Pine capital
of logging. The mill railroad lines are no longer in use, but their gradual
grades are now the domain of happy hikers who use the El Dorado Trail
system from Placerville to Camino. The Pollock Pines area has a rich history
that began when westward immigration brought gold seekers into
this part of California via the Mormon Immigrant Trail. This colorful and
unhurried route begins south of Pollock Pines and is one gateway to vast
areas of the Eldorado National Forest. History also raced through this part
of the county when young men on fast horses delivered the mail and
news between St. Louis and San Francisco on the Pony Express. Summer
fun centers around the picturesque Jenkinson Lake & Sly Park Recreation
area; framed by beautiful forests and nine miles of hiking and equestrian
trails. Swimming and boating are popular activities with two boat ramps
and many beaches available to swimmers. The area also offers both day
use and overnight camping with 191 campsites.

ucked away in the southern portion of El Dorado County
along beautiful byways of the Sierra Foothills you’ll find
the communities of Fair Play, Mt. Aukum, Somerset and
Omo Ranch.
At 2,000 to over 3,000 feet elevation lies a visitor-friendly
agricultural community anchored by the world class
winegrowing region. Although Fair Play was once a thriving rural
mining, agricultural and timber outpost of the Gold Rush, it has
now developed a reputation for high quality wine grapes that
yield deeply flavorful, intense wines from an amazingly diverse
range of grape varieties. The wineries of Fair Play offer the wineenthusiast a unique opportunity to experience and enjoy wine
in an atmosphere that is friendly and inviting. Family owned
wineries, beautiful vineyards and affordable wines coupled with
seasonal farms and ranches make a visit to Fair Play a must.

El Dorado Wine Country
TASTE AT A HIGHER LEVEL
EL DORADO COUNTY
Visit El Dorado Wine Country for breathtaking vistas, wide
diversity of award winning wines, discovery and delight around
every bend. Our wineries are renowned for making vibrantly
flavorful, distinctly delicious wines, grown in the dramatic
elevations of the Sierra Nevada.
One of California’s oldest wine-producing areas, vineyards and
wineries first flourished here during the Gold Rush era. A century
later, in the 1970s, a renaissance in the growth of premium
vineyards and wineries began again.
Today, the county has more than 2,000 acres of vines
producing 50 grape varieties and home to more than 70 wineries.
Each passionately tended by winemakers who love coaxing from
each diverse acre its perfect harvest and each different in their
winemaking approach.
Come explore the El Dorado Wine Country and discover some
of California’s most sophisticated wines.

2012 Crystal Basin Chardonnay is
a great pairing. The fruit element
of our Chardonnay brings out the
angular elements of the quinoa
salad – the sharpness of the lemon
juice, the creamy texture of the
quinoa, the viciousness of the
olives and olive oil and knits the
acidity of the salad recipe and the
other perfectly.

This is an angler’s
paradise!
The various streams and creeks in El Dorado County
hold more trout than most people think. You can find a
map showing all of the named streams and creeks on
the west slope of El Dorado County simply by visiting
eldoradotu.org. Once there you can select your favorite
stream, then check the fish index attached which shows
you the type of trout you can expect to find on the end
of your line when fishing that water. All streams that
drain into the American River watershed are open year
round with certain restrictions.

Farmer’s Market
Know your Farmer, Know your Food
A profile of a local farm that sells at local Farmers’ Markets
Farm Name: Harris Tree Farm #84 East They are getting known as
the Harris Family Farm because the sisters (Pam and Jane) are committed
to mentoring the next generation so that the Blair-Harris family-farming
legacy will continue over the many years ahead.
How to find them: They sell at the Main Street Farmers’ Market
Wednesday evenings in Placerville and at the Ski Run Farmers’ Market in
South Lake Tahoe on Friday evenings. You can also stop by

How long have you been farming? Since
the 1850’s….what? Great-Great Grandfather
Matthew Blair homesteaded the family property
in the 1850s, where he built and operated a
lumber mill with his son Matthew. Today’s more
diversified operation, includes nearly 100 acres
of natural forest in addition to the produce and
Christmas Tree farm.

What do you grow? Apples, pears,
blueberries, blackberries, heirloom green beans,
artisan lettuce blends, heirloom tomatoes,
carrots, beets, squash and farm fresh freerange eggs. They also make homemade jams
and jellies, fresh fruit pies and turnovers. At
the farm, besides the fresh produce they offer
Christmas Trees and a festive pumpkin patch.
Fun fact: The first Choose and Cut Christmas
farm customer arrived to cut their tree in 1961.
Family Affair: Jane and Pam grew up on
the Harris Tree Farm, along with older brother
Tom and younger brother Bill. Enlisting help Great Great Grandparents
Matthew and Pauline Blair
from Pam’s husband Dave and Jane’s three original homesteaders.
children Blair, Sally, and Becca, and grandkids
(6th & 7th generation) the Harris Tree Farm has always been committed
to respecting nature, and preserving the natural beauty and health of the
environment by employing sustainable farming methods.
