1980 FOOTBALL COACH OF THE YEAR
HARVEY NAASZ, WINNER
Harvey Naasz guided Winner to its first unbeaten
football season in fifty years. He has a record of
65-14-1 in nine years a t Winner, and also received the
coaches association honor in 1974. Naasz began his
coaching career in Gettysburg and also coached in
Custer and Gregory before moving to Winner.
1980 BOYS CROSS COUNTRY COACH OF THE YEAR
DAVE ARCHAMBAULT, KYLE
Four years ago in Kyle's first year with a cross country program only five boys reported, and Kyle placed
Ilth in the state meet. This year sixteen were on the
squad and Kyle won its second straight Class B boys
championship. The school has also produced the last
two individual champions in the 5,000-meter run.
Archambault is a native of Fort Yates. N.D.and a
graduate of Black Hills State College.
1980 GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY COACH OF THE YEAR
FRAN ESSER, REDFIELD
Fran Esser's boys' and girls' teams each won their
respective Class A divisions at the state meet. This was
his fifth year at Redfield. He is the only coach to ever
be honored twice within one year as Coach of the
Year.
1980 GIRLS BASKETBALL COACH OF THE YEAR
JOE LOCKWOOD. SIOUX FALLS WASHINGTON
Joe Lockwood guided his team to a perfect record
and the state Class A championship. He has been in
the Sioux Falls school system since 1958 and got his
first head coaching assignment in 1977.
"It proves that no matter where you coach there are
people out there pulling for you, and that makes you
feel good,"
1981 WRESTLING COACH OF THE YEAR
FRAN ESSER, REDFIELD
Esser's Redfield Pheasants went into the state wrestling tournament as heavy favorites and rolled up 157
points to easily outdistance the-restof the field.
1981 GYMNASTICS COACH OF THE YEAR
BILL BEESLEY, WAGNER
Bill Beesley was responsible for developing a gymnastics program at Wagner, and their team rose to
dominance in just four years. He had two state "B"
championship teams and three individual state
champions. His record at Wagner was 73-20.
"The key has just been excellent athletes."
1981 BOYS BASKETBALL COACH OF THE YEAR
DAN MORAN, STICKNEY
Moran engineered the Raiders through a 24-2
season and in the process collected his 300th
coaching victory and his first state championship. This
is the second year in a row that he has been chosen
Boys Basketball Coach of the Year.
He is a Woonsocket native and a Dakota Wesleyan
University graduate and previously coached at Montrose and Letcher.
1981 BOYS TRACK COACH OF THE YEAR
JERRY McELROY, WATERTOWN
A teacher-coach at Watertown for the past 20
years, McElroy took the reins of the boys' track and
cross country programs in the fall of 1979. His 1981
team captured the E.S.D. Conference championship
and finished as runner-up in the Class AA division of
the state high school track meet.
"I don't think there's a coach alive who wouldn't
cherish this honor."

1981 GIRLS TRACK COACH OF THE YEAR
CAL COREY. STURGIS
Corey has been coaching for ten years, eight at
Sturgis. He has developed the team into a strong contender, and they have won the Black Hills Conference
title for three straight years.
Corey is a graduate of Winner High School and
Black Hills State College.
1981 GOLF COACH OF THE YEAR
JOYCE FARRELL, MADISON
Joyce Farrell has been the girls golf coach at
Madison for ten years, and her team captured their
second straight E.S.D. Conference crown. They also
won the Section 5 titie and finished third in the state
Class A tournament. They had an 8-1 dual season
record.
She is a graduate of Hazel High School and Dakota
State College.
ATHLETICDIRECTOR
OF THE YEAR
JACK RICHARDSON. V A " ' * n " '
Richardson took over the Athletic Director job at
Yankton in 1968, having been with the system from
1958-65. He has served as executive secretary of the
S.D. Athletic Directors Association for the past three
years.
"I really like seeing kids develop their talents and
have success. That has been very gratifying."
1981 DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD
DR. GLENN DUNCAN, TYNDALL
Given Tor oursranalng contributions to hign school
athletics and dedication to the highest and best In
high school athletics.
Duncan was a motivating force in starting the sport
of wrestling at Tyndall in 1964 and assisted with the
program for many years. He has served some 20
years as Head Judge of the Tyndall Relays, and is
among the most ardent athletic boosters in the communily.
1981 DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD
FORREST T LOTHROP, SIOUX FALLS
Given for outstanding contributions to high school
athletics and dedication to the highest and best in
high school athletics.
Lothrop coached at Beresford, Dickinson, N.D. and
Sioux Falls Washington for eight years He officiated
many years and presently is the head timer at Howard
Wood Stadium and Washington basketball games
and State B Tournaments.
He continues to d o a great deal for South Dakota
athletics.

MARK OVENDEN, KSFY-TV SPORTS DIRECTOR
Ovenden, a native or aoston, is III 111s IIIIIU year at
KSFY. He headed a four-man broadcasting team last
year when KSFY carried live coverage of the girls and
boys state basketball tournaments.
