LSPG Information—Networking Key to Success
for the
LEGAL STAFF PROFESSIONALS OF
(LSPG)
GREENVILLE
PRESIDENT’S LETTER:
March 2013
We had two good speakers for the legal ed - Barbara
Seymour, wh;o spoke on Ethics, and Gray Wallington, who
spoke on eDiscovery. It was anounced that statewide we
have 76 members, and Greenville is the largest chapter
with 26, The following will be our officers for next year, to
be installed in Spartanburg at the annual meeting in April:
President - Lois Belle, PLS
President-Elect - Jan Berger, ALS
Functional Director of Membership - Meredity Lazarski,
ACP
Functional Director of Marketing - Camilla Pitman, CMC,
PLS
Functional Director of Education - Carlene Kilgore, PLS
Secretary - Tara Brown, PLS, PP
Treasurer - Jimi Bullard, ALS
Here we are just getting over our first "snow storm" of the
year and I'm thinking spring!! It'll be here next month, along
with many of our chapter's activities that come about this
time of year.
Thank you to everyone who brought items for our
Christmas charity, Serenity Place. Scott Dishman provided
great insight to what this organization does for addicted
mothers and the hope they can have with help. Thank you,
Cathy Boggs, for finding them and providing us a great
cause to support this year. Don't forget to support them
every month by bringing items from their wish list.
JoAnne Gregory came to our rescue at the 11th hour with
our speaker, her boss, Mark Tollison, the County Attorney,
when our scheduled speaker had to postpone. I felt it was
particularly enlightening to see what types of things his
office has to endure - which are so varied from a law firm
that specializes in certain areas.
Several of our members attended the LSPSC Winter Board
Meeting in Columbia. During the meeting the state board
gives incentive money in a drawing, and I was surrounded
by Deb Reynolds and Yvonne Fortner, who both won
money! I really thought I may win the third drawing, but
didn't!! Oh, well, won a few Chinese Auction items.
March 2013
As you can see, we have three of our members who will be
officers next year. Other members of LSPG have agreed to
be committee chair persons.
A NALS study session was held on February 9 with some of
our members conducting it and other members attending.
Our February speaker will be Alan Clardy, I'm sure this will
be very entertaining and informative.
Our election of officers will be held in March, and
installation of new officers in April. We will also be having
our Chinese Auction at that meeting so be prepared to bring
items for it and buy tickets. Thsi is a fun fundraiser for our
association.
The LSPSC annual meeting will be held April 26-28 at the
Marriott Hotel in Spartanburg. A BBQ will be held at the
Butler Means Law Firm on Friday night as a get-acquainted
party. If you are interested in attending it and have not yet
signed up, please let me or Kerry Waldrop know as soon as
possible. Also, Lois Belle will be installed as president on
Saturday night so we would like as many members as
possible to attend to help celebrate her big
night. Remember that LSPG will pay for our members' to
attend the annual meeting - so save a copy of your check to
submit to Myra Culbertson for reimbursement.

The March board meeting will be held March 7, and the
April one is being changed from April 3 to April 10 due to
me being "Down Under." As always, they are held at 1st
Floor City Hall at 12:30 pm and are open to all members.
Patti Bacon, 2012-2013 LSPG President
Thanks to all members who have supported me this year.

*For those who are unfamiliar with this “game,” tickets are purchased for 50ȼ or $1 and can be put in
a bag to be drawn for each item that is
being auctioned. A winner is drawn for
each item. And where do we get our
items, you might wonder? We bring them
and put them in the auction. Therefore,
please bring one or two things to put into
the auction and entice others. This
auction is purely for fun and we enjoy it at
every opportunity!

LSPG is excited to partner with Serenity Place for our 2013 Charity! Serenity Place is a
residential treatment center for pregnant women, young mothers and their preschool-age
children. Each year, about 120 mothers and children find hope, healing and transformation
in the program, with each family living on-site for four to six months. Up to 48 women and
children are in treatment at Serenity Place at any given time.
When a young mother and her children enter Serenity Place, the family has already been
down a long and dangerous road. The mother is struggling with addiction, and without
help, she is just about to lose her children to the foster care system...possibly forever. She's
also likely to be escaping from sexual abuse. For every five young mothers that come to
Serenity Place, four have been sexually abused, and this abuse often plays a role in the
onset
of
the
mother's
addiction.
The children have suffered through no fault of their own, and often come to us traumatized
and confused. Their daily lives have veered from chaos to deadening neglect, without rhyme
or reason. They are often delayed on several developmental levels and emotionally unable
to connect. Without help, they will be unprepared for any kind of classroom environment.
Serenity Place provides outstanding clinical program with a staff that works 24/7 towards
three objectives for all client families: healing the mother's addiction, accelerate the child's
development, and building long term skills for family strength and self sufficiency.

Calling All Students . . .
Did you know that effective immediately, NALS will be offering a one-year FREE membership to

PP certification exam? In an effort to recruit new members, NALS has changed its eligibility
requirements to sit for the PP exam. Students of an approved paralegal studies program who are nearing
graduation will now be eligible to sit for the PP exam, provided their instructor signs off on a graduation
affidavit.
