Monthly newsletters going paperless
As part of our ongoing efforts to control expenses where possible,
we are transitioning to an electronic only version of the monthly newsletters produced in our four school buildings. Beginning with the March
2016 edition, we will no longer be mailing paper copies of these monthly
newsletters. This will result in significant savings in the cost of paper,
printing and postage. All of our buildings’ newsletters will continue to be
available for viewing, downloading, and printing on our district website:
www.svsabers.org
If you do not have internet access and still would like a printed
copy, contact your school’s main office.
Harding to attend U.N. assembly
When some 400 exceptional young people from
across the globe converge at the United Nations in
New York City February 17 and 18, Susquehanna
Valley High School junior Emily Harding will be
among them. Harding has been selected to attend the
Winter Youth Assembly - a gathering of youth leaders, UN officials and staff, young professionals, and
others, to examine the role young people will play in shaping and implementing the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.
Harding, a member of the high school Mock Trial team, envisions
for herself a future in International Law. She is excited about the opportunity presented by the UN Youth Assembly - especially for the chance
to get to know people from other countries. “My goal is to share my
perspective, and hear others’,” she said. “It’s valuable to consider all
perspectives in solving problems.”
This is not Emily’s first such major gathering. In July, she attended an 8-day HOBY (Hugh O’Brien Youth) Leadership workshop
in Chicago. HOBY, like the UN Youth Assembly, is designed to help
shape the leaders of tomorrow. Emily called it a very valuable experience and believes her next one - at the UN in NYCaber
- will be every bit
as worthwhile.

From the Superintendent
The 2015-16 school year seems
to be flying by with so many good things
happening in our school buildings. I
don’t know about you, but I’m not unhappy about the warmer-than-usual temperatures this fall and winter. If nothing
else, it has kept delays and closings to a
bare minimum, and that means students
and teachers are benefitting from full
days in the classroom.
It’s been an exciting year for athletics here in Saber
Country. Our new Athletic Director, Mr. Snyder, has been hosting recognition ceremonies for our senior athletes and their parents and guardians, and it has been my privilege to be on hand
to greet the honorees and congratulate them on their success.
The spring season is fast approaching and I know our athletes
are looking forward to moving outside to compete.
March is Music in our Schools Month with numerous
events scheduled throughout the month. I’m looking forward
to the upcoming performances of Little Shop of Horrors at the
high school. I know the drama club has been working very hard
getting ready for the show, and I hope you’ll join me in attending one of the three performances and supporting our students.
We are also fortunate to be hosting a technology conference for area schools. This day-long event will provide an
opportunity for collaboration regarding technology in the classroom.
I know our seniors must feel a sense of excitement about
the coming months. I hope that they are able to enjoy every
moment of their time here before moving on to all that awaits
them. As always, I wish all of our students continued success
moving forward this spring.
Respectfully,
Roland Doig, Superintendent of Schools

At SV High, Mrs. Willis is a life saver!
Quick thinking and good training - and a little recent experience
of her own! Those are the factors that turned a potential catastrophe to a
life saving (and changing) moment for Cindy Willis and Kevin Cady.
Friday, December 4 started off as just another school day for
Susquehanna Valley High School teacher aide Cindy Willis and for high
school senior Kevin Cady. But by the time the clock struck noon, their
day had changed dramatically - and their lives would forever be linked by
an act of quick thinking and true heroism.
Mrs. Willis was filling in for an ill colleague during “Saber Time”
at the high school, and was manning her post in the high school cafeteria
as a group of Broome-Tioga BOCES-bound students ate their lunch.
As Mrs. Willis recalls: “I took a phone call and was making some
notes and I heard a student - Thomas Engle - repeatedly calling my
name.” Engle was sitting with Cady and a group of other students approximately 20 feet from where Mrs. Willis was standing. Responding to
her name being called,
Mrs. Willis turned to
see Kevin standing
up. “I thought he was
going to throw up. I
got on the radio to
the school nurse and
walked over to Kevin.”
Once she got closer,
she could see this was
more than an upset
stomach. Kevin was
turning purple.
From left to right: Thomas Engle, Cindy Willis, and Kevin

told Mrs. Willis.
Without hesitation, Mrs. Willis positioned herself behind Kevin,
wrapped her arms around him and began performing the Heimlich Maneuver. After four good thrusts of her clenched fists into his abdomen,
the blockage cleared. After sitting the student down and making sure
he was okay, in true Cindy Willis fashion, she retrieved cleaning supplies, cleared away the mess, got Kevin a new lunch (which he ate before departing for BOCES) and went about her business. “I was trying to
do this without creating too much of a disturbance,” she said. “I don’t
think more than a couple of people saw what was going on.”
Willis credits her faith in God and the training she has received in
CPR and first aid with the life-saving treatment she rendered that day. “I
have a family care home with psychiatric patients who live with me,” Willis said. “I’ve had extensive training - which I’ve never had to use before.
I hope I never have to again. I’m just glad I paid attention in class!”
Kevin was extremely grateful in the moments following the successful Heimlich Maneuver, repeatedly thanking Mrs. Willis. Kevin’s
parents and sister have also expressed their gratitude with cards and gifts.
Mrs. Willis takes it in stride. “My life is wonderful. I’m very blessed. I’m
just very thankful I could be there for that child when he needed me.”
Ironically, Mrs. Willis said, she was on the receiving end of the
Heimlich Maneuver not that long ago. “Over the summer I started choking
on a beverage and my husband used the Heimlich on me. As she started to
perform the maneuver on Kevin, she remembered how her husband had
embraced her in her moment of need. “It’s amazing one human can do this
for another,” she said.

SVCSD Facilities Update
from Ralph Schuldt, Director of School Facilities
Work over the summer of 2015 included replacing sections
of the roof at SV High School - over the kitchen and cafeteria and
around to the orchestra and art rooms. We also replaced all the lockers at the high school, and reduced the number of lockers by in-filling and installing showcases along the corridors. We also undertook
a $100,000 Net Zero energy performance project that included replacement of the large and small gym lights along with the adjoining
corridor lights with more energy efficient LED lighting. We also
sanded and refinished the large gym floor and added a new paint
scheme and other improvements in and around the gym. Also over
the summer, we replaced the entire roof at Brookside and added an
entrance canopy. You might also notice our Saber logo has been tiled
onto the floor at Brookside’s main entrance.
This summer, we will be replacing all of the lights in the
high school auditorium with LED lighting. This will include all
house lights and stage lighting along with stage dimming panel and
additional lighting for the stage and pit areas.
This summer’s Net Zero energy performance contract project consists of LED lighting for the natatorium and science wing
classrooms.

Putting carrots to the test at FPD
Broome-Tioga BOCES’ Rock On! Café mounted a carrot
coin taste test Friday, November 13 at Francis P. Donnelly
Elementary School. The test pitted locally-sourced carrots
against carrots grown in California. Nutrition professionals
Sandy Travis, Julie Raway (Broome-Tioga BOCES Dietician) and Jennifer Kent (Finger Lakes Fresh) set up a table
to offer carrot coin samples to hungry students during their
lunch period. It was a blind taste test, with students sampling
locally-grown and non-locally grown carrots and then choosing which they liked better. This is all part of a concerted
effort underway in our region to stock school lunch programs
with more locally-produced food items.

The Susquehanna Valley High

Little Shop of Horrors, Friday, February 26, Saturday,

A deviously delicious Broadway
and Hollywood sci-fi smash musical,
Little Shop Of Horrors has devoured the
hearts of theater-goers for over thirty years. Howard Ashman and Alan
Menken (Disney’s The Little Mermaid, Beauty And The Beast, and Aladdin) are the creative geniuses behind what has become one of the most
popular shows in the world.
The story follows meek and dejected flower shop assistant Seymour Krelborn as he goes about his daily routine: tending to plants, being
berated by his boss, shop owner Mrs. Mushnik, and pining for his beautiful
co-worker Audrey. Everything changes during a total eclipse, when Seymour discovers and begins to care for a plant not of this world. He names
the plant Audrey II, and soon learns that the plant has big (and sinister)
plans. Audrey II develops a soulful voice, a bit of a potty mouth, and an
appetite for human blood. The small drops Seymour feeds the plant don’t
satisfy the bloodthirsty plant, and the more Seymour gives, the more the
plant demands.
Audrey II grows bigger and meaner - promising Seymour limitless
fame and fortune in exchange for a continuous “food” supply. Just when
it’s too late, Seymour discovers Audrey II’s extra-terrestrial origins and
his true drive for world-domination. And even though the strange plant
has breathed new life into the struggling flower shop, Seymour knows she

“A Great Place to Live and Learn!”
You Be the Chemist at RTS
Students at Richard T. Stank Middle School are learning a lot
about chemistry these days, not only in their daily science classroom lessons, but also as part of a program called You Be the Chemist.
“You Be The Chemist is an interactive academic contest that encourages middle school students to
explore chemistry concepts and their
real world applications,” explained
co-adviser and middle school science teacher Ashley Feltes. “More
than 30 middle school students
chose to take a qualifying exam
in November. The top 10 students
were invited to prepare for the inter-district local competition, which will be held at SUNY Broome on
Saturday, March 5.
These students are
meeting each week
to study a variety of
chemistry concepts
in preparation for
the contest.”
During one
recent session in
Sydelle Steward’s
SV High School
science classroom, Mrs. Feltes and co-adviser Erin Robertson showed
students a brief video about the “father
of the periodic table” Dmitri Mendeleev.
Published in 1869, Mendeleev’s was the
first widely recognized
periodic table of
the known elements. Mendeleev’s periodic
table has since
been expanded and refined with the discovery
or synthesis of further new elements and the development of new theoretical models to explain
chemical behavior.
These students are involved in You Be the Chemist: Dylan Vanderbilt, Joseph Mayglothling, Caroline Bunt, Maresa Burr, Faith
Smith, Gabriel Keough, Lucas Underhill, Kyle Spisak, Karim AlKhalidi, Payton Gendron, Lara VanPutten.
Meanwhile, Mrs. Feltes is also helping RTS students prepare for
the annual Odyssey of the Mind
competition. She and fellow
coach Kelly Howe were doing
some prep work recently with
several of this year’s team members.
“Odyssey of the mind
requires students as a team to
creatively solve problems,” said
Feltes. “This year the students
have chosen a long-term problem
involving Aesop’s fables. They
have been using their imaginations to create a skit that shows their chosen fable and its message going “viral” in a past time period. The students have been hard at work
creating a set, props, costumes, and
a script. We have also been working on the spontaneous portion of
the contest, which will test students’
verbal skills, mechanical skills, or a
combination of both. It can include
anything from creating a caption
for a picture to building the tallest
possible structure out of spaghetti.
We will be attending a workshop in
February specifically designed to
help students in this area.”
Team members are: Dylan Howe, Katie Howe, Madison Deyo,
Abigail Mayglothling, Gianna Morabito, Alex Fedo, and Kaitlin
Eddy. The Odyssey of the Mind competition is Saturday, February 27,
7:00 a.m., Broome-Tioga BOCES main campus.

Brookside Fit Kid Club
How do you start your day? At Brookside Elementary School, some students and their physical education teacher started some of
their days in the Fit Kid Club! Three days a week in the month of January, Ms. Simpson held an early morning Fit Kid Club for students
in grades BK-5: Tuesdays for youngsters in BK, K, and 1st grade, Wednesdays for kids in 2nd and 3rd grade, and Thursdays for the 4th
and 5th grade students.
“Each day we started with a tag game warmup, stretch and then worked on our cup stacking. Each day ended with some fun cup
stacking races,” Simpson explained.
Brookside Fit Kid Club starts back up in April and Ms. Simpson is hoping to expand it to three times next year.

WINTER WONDERLAND in the Brookside gym!
December 23 was a very good day for students at Brookside! Not only was it the last full day of school before the winter break,
but students got to wear their pajamas, got to read The Polar Express while drinking hot cocoa, AND physical education classes were a
winter wonderland! With holiday music playing on the stereo, kids went from station to station to run, jump, climb and swing their way
into the holidays!

Ali Drake original brightens troops’ holidays
Alexandra Drake and
some of her fellow students at
SV High School made the holiday season a little brighter for
hundreds of U.S. troops serving
their country overseas. Drake, a
senior art student, designed a holiday card that depicts images and
messages of support for troops
spending the holidays away from
their loved ones. Teachers were
so impressed by Ali’s design and initiative that they had 500 copies professionally printed. Then, during December Olweus program meetings,
students got busy writing messages and signing the cards, which were
then mailed to the troops.
Celebrate Reading!
Our teachers and staff are always
exploring imaginative ways to inspire students to be excited about literacy. Pictured
here: just a small sampling of the many
ways we’re encouraging young people to
hop on the literacy train! At Francis P.
Donnelly, youngsters spend time in the
Literacy Lab, where they move from one
reading and writing-centered activity to
another. The annual People as
Reading Partners program helps
students discover how reading
can be an important and enjoyable part of their lives. During
PARP, guest readers visit our
classrooms, like SV Board of Education member Ryan Andres,
shown below sharing his love
of reading with students at
F.P. Donnelly. At Brookside, Mrs. Parkison and
Mrs. Wasko took advantage of late December’s
spring-like temperatures
to read The Polar Express
outdoors.
And what does a comic/juggler have to do with
reading? A lot, according to funnyman Nels
Ross, who visited our elementary schools during PARP. Ross told the children his love for
reading got him started in entertainment, when

RTS students compete in Mathalon
Seven 6th graders from Richard T. Stank Middle School participated in the Broome County Mathalon Competition, December 5 at
Binghamton University. There were fourteen teams representing seven
area school districts in the competition, sponsored by BAE Electronic
Systems. The students are not just competing against each other, but
also against the clock. They work in teams to solve sometimes complex math problems in timed rounds.

The Susquehanna Valley High School Honor Society hosted a firstof-its-kind event January 23 in the high school cafeteria. “Chopped for
CHOW” was a fundraiser for
the Community Hunger Outreach Warehouse. The name
comes from a program on the
Food Network that challenges competing cooks to turn a
basket of everyday “mystery”
ingredients into a three course
meal.
Visitors to SV’s event,
which also featured craft activities and a book sale, got to
sample a variety of delicious
treats, created by both students and staff. The event
was part of the honor society members’ service project pledge, and all proceeds
were donated to CHOW.
