ALH 20/20 telehandlers 2008 the largest aerial work platform and telehandler rental fleets in North America © copyright 2008 www.khl.com TELEHANDLERS Telehandler20 Last year ALH published the ALH 20/20, a list of the 20 largest aerial and telehandler fleets in North America. This year, we are publishing the two lists separately – this month it is the ALH Telehandler20, and our SeptOct issue will bring you the ALH Aerial20. So, what changes in the telehandler list in 2008? This year, we see new entries make way and some entrants from last year drop off from the list. Some of the numbers are estimates, as was the case last year, because several rental yards still prefer to keep these particular numbers close to their chests. Overall, the Telehandler20 list grew this year by 1.6%, with a total figure of 31,554 machines in fleets. This figure is helped by the independents, as the top five grew at a slower pace of 0.8%. This figure includes some estimates, so it is more realistic to simply talk of zero growth in the region’s largest telehandlers fleets. Last year, the top rental carrier was the obvious, United Rentals, which held a fleet of 10,215. It holds the title again this year; however, the company reports 1% less with 10,115. At the other end of the table, Indianapolis-based AirWorx reported 20 more handlers in 12 months to its fleet, totaling 90, symbolic of its growth % +/CHANGE WEBSITE -0.9% 11% 0% 0% -0.4% 2.1% 0% 15% -0.6% 15% 18% -0.5% -0.49% -1.6% 32% 16% 9.5% 23% 4.2% 28% www.ur.com www.ahernrentals.com www.rscrental.com www.sunbeltrentals.com www.nesrentals.com www.he-equipment.com www.hertzequip.com www.sunstateequip.com www.neffrental.com www.volvorents.com www.leavittmachinery.com www.eqdepot.com www.admarsupply.com www.holtca.com www.nebraska-machinery.com www.midwestaerials.com www.venetor.com www.idealcrane.com www.battlefieldequipment.ca www.airworxcorp.com MAY-JUNE 2008 American Lift & Handlers 25 ALH 05-0608 Telehandlers.indd 25 22/05/2008 16:43:08 TELEHANDLERS The survey Research for the Telehandler20 was carried out during spring 2008. Where companies were unwilling to provide data, we have made our own estimates based on advice from annual reports and industry contacts. Ahern Rentals holds the second largest number of handlers in its fleet with more than 3,500. as the company expands into the Cincinnati and Louisville markets (see News). Ahern Rentals continues its climb as the second largest owner of handlers – reflecting its historical strength in high-reach equipment. Caterpillar dealer rental operations stepped up this year with three of its Cat Rental Store operators in the Top 20. New entrant New to this list is Ideal Crane, of Wisconsin, which not only runs a large crane rental fleet, but has also built quite a fleet in its aerial and handler division. From the perspective of growth overall, some companies still individually reported a decline in its handler fleets. United Rentals has 102 less than it did 12 months ago. Florida’s Neff Rental sees a decline in its total count, as well as Texas-based Equipment Depot. Last year’s 19 ranked company, Valley Equipment & Supply, has closed one of its branches and dropped around 25 handlers with a current fleet now of 45. These figures support a softening in the market that seems more apt to decrease than climb over the next 12 months. Nationals in the top five, such as RSC Equipment Rental and Sunbelt Rentals, declined to state its fleet size. Again, estimates were necessary in tallying this year’s results. Next time around, aerials are the subject matter and the numbers will be significantly higher. It will be interesting to see the growth in aerials compared to the zero-growth telehandler ALH fleets.
