Volume 1 Level All
This collection of fiddle tunes originally appeared in
"Kaufman's Collection of American Fiddle Tunes for Flatpicking Guitar (MB 95748)" but the book was so large and heavy
that they couldn't put all the songs on CDs to include with the
package so it was divided into four great, melody packed volumes. Each book now includes a CD that holds all the songs in the volume.
All the songs in the book are played note for note on the accompanying CD at about ¾
speed. Your goal is to learn the song, memorize it and then race with the Champ.
Steve Kaufman says he can't emphasize enough the importance of developing a large
repertoire of tunes. Fiddle tunes give us melodies that eventually allow us to begin to
improvise. Sometimes without even knowing it. The more tunes you know, the more
melodies and intersecting melody lines you know. This allows you to eventually cut
and paste portions of the melody line into another song. In the beginning you will
probably unknowingly replace and ending run. These are the last two measures of the
section of a tune. Many of them in the same key are interchangeable, unless they are
specific to the melody of the song. After a while you will cut out measures in the middle of the song and then you will be able to take the snips of melodies and play them
in another song in a different key thus beginning to improvise. All of this is possible
because you built up your repertoire of tunes

As I’ve said before, the only place this much music can
take place is either Kamp Kaufman or Heaven. As a
guitarist I can say that I am humbled every year by the
talent at the Kamps. Not only the instructors and
performers but by the students themselves. We meet new
friends each year and see old friends return. It’s like
nothing I have ever seen before. A bonding takes place in
June each year at the Kamp that cannot be described here.
The year of this recording was the first year the
Flatpicking Kamp sold out with 200 flatpickers, the
mandolin Kamp had 97 enrolled and the Banjo Kamp had
68. That’s a lot of students and the instructors handled it beautifully. We teach music during
the day and when the sun goes down the Kamp Koncerts begin. It is truly a magical series.
Recorded June 11-23, 2001 during Steve Kaufman’s Acoustic Kamps. This is a Kamp with
the world’s most stellar instructors who are also incredible performers and great people to

This is CD Set was recorded at one of the most incredible concert series every captured to tape. It was very
difficult this year sorting out all the unbelievable concerts. They were recorded between June 10-22, 2002 at
Steve Kaufman’s Acoustic Kamp. When the job of
selecting material began, we had to first listen through
23 hours of concerts. Then we had to narrow it down to
the best materials. This number was 53 songs. We then
had to narrow that down to the 38 songs you have before you. Your job is a whole lot easier than ours was you just have to sit back and relax and listen to the

music on two CDs. You cannot possibly believe
the music that didn’t make it to this project.
Maybe someday there will be a compilation CD of
the songs that didn’t make it to this project. Until
