Work Release
2015 WMGK House Band Winners!
By: Krista Doran
Each year, WMGK hosts a band
competition where bands from
all over the Tri-state area are able
to compete for the title of WMGK
House Band for the term of one
full year. The winner of this yearly
competition also gets to play several WMGK events which include
the Let Freedom Rock Fest, they
receive $1,000 in brand new band
equipment and get 2 days of free
recording time at the one and only
Philly Sound Studios. We are very
happy to announce that 2015 winner of this competition is a band
called Work Release!
I interviewed guitarist and vocalist Tom Najarian who explained
to me how the band first started.
“Work Release was spawned by a
request from mine and Brandon’s
sons’ Cub Scout leaders to entertain the boys at a pack camping
trip. Meanwhile, Brandon’s son’s
guitar teacher Jeff Larson and one
of his bass students Mike Pidcoe
had been roaming around looking for places to jam. We all got
together and while rehearsing a
set of traditional songs, we would
often launch into classic rock riffs
to liven things up a bit. We soon
discovered that we shared a lot of
common ground musically. So we
decided to see where things lead
after that. The quartet of Brandon,
Jeff, Mike and I enthusiastically
tore through dozens of Classic
Rock and Blues songs. At that
first session, it was obvious to all
that we were destined to form a
band. Just a few weeks into in this
process, Brandon happened to
cross paths with former neighbor
Suzanne Moore, who he knew
had a history of singing with other
bands. Brandon invited Suzanne
to sit in on a rehearsal and it once
again became obvious that she
needed to join. After a few false
starts in nailing down a regular
drummer, Mark Daniels found us
via a Craigslist ad. Seems Mark
was originally looking to join a
horn band, but he became intrigued by hearing about our band
lineup and repertoire. Mark turned
out to be a great fit, having the
right chops, attention to detail and
teamwork ethic that Work Release
prides itself upon. And the beat
goes on!”
With all the
bands out
there, Work Release shows their
uniqueness by having 3 guitars
and no keyboards, although, and
as Tom stated, “We’ll sometimes
have our friend Steve Sauer from
The Flaming Caucasians and
RSVP sit in on keys. We pride
ourselves on our ability to make 3
guitars work without stepping all
over the other guy’s riffs. Often
I will be on acoustic while Jeff
and Brandon are on electric. But
sometimes 3 electric guitars are
actually required to cover all the
parts properly in a given song, like
Layla or Life in the Fast Lane. We
also feature my sax and Jeff’s harp
on some tunes, plus we have 3
lead vocalists in Suzanne, Jeff and
myself. Oh, and our bassist Mike
has a Fender Precision fetish. You
just never know which ones he’ll

than 4 decades. If you go to see
Each member has played prothis band, expect to enjoy everyfessionally in other bands over the
thing they play. Tom explained
“It’s like being run over by a freight years and they even play some
train made of cotton? No, wait… originals. When I asked Tom
about this he told me, “Jeff and I
that didn’t come out right. Let’s
try this. All the high-energy punch have written songs that Work Release has performed live. Suzanne

have something for everyone and while Mike and Mark have written
musical parts that bring it all towe deliver lots of well-executed,

Studios. We’re looking forward
to recording some of our original
material during those sessions.”
Work Release is a band that
enjoys playing everything in their
repertoire. But as Tom told me,
“We have the most fun when we
get to play at venues where the
audience appreciates strong musicianship. That really allows us to
stretch and flex without worrying
about whether people can dance
to it. Less Pop, more Snap and
Crackle! We’re fortunate to have
a variety of outlets that allow us to
cover all the bases and have fun
doing it.” Here is where you can
catch them next:
Friday, September 5 from 9:00
pm - 1:00 am at The Water Tower
in Oaks, PA and Saturday September 6 from 1-5 pm WMGK’s
Battleship Brew Blast on The Battleship New Jersey, Camden, NJ.
You can also visit their website at
www.workreleaseband.com to see
their full schedule right now.
Work Release is Suzanne
Moore – Vocals, Percussion; Tom
Najarian – Guitar, Sax, Vocals;
Jeff Larson – Guitar, Harmonica,
Vocals Brandon Weinstock – Guitar; Michael Pidcoe – Bass and
Mark Daniels – Drums. Be sure
to go out and see them and also
help us all congratulate them on
their WMGK House Band Contest
Victory!

Brittany Rotondo in Love with her Guitar!
What Brittany Rotondo does?
She mostly refers to herself in
the third person. She graces
stages from the East Coast to
West with band John & Brittany, and during the very little
downtime, practices blues on
the Black Beauty Les Paul from
her musical guru Grandfather.
Brittany also plans on creating music of her own, and has
serious plans to do so in the
beginning of 2015. When she’s
not entertaining audiences
via James Brown footwork &
nimble fingers, she can be found
working at the local haunt (And

a weekly basis, cohosting Open
Mic and working the door. Brittany also dates world renowned
Godfather of the Red Eye, Philadelphia’s own 93.3 WMMR DJ,
Jacky Bam Bam. The two plan
to tie the knot and wreak sweet
chaos. She can also be spotted,
cigarette in mouth, with neon
colored hair and ripped jeans,
thrift shopping and penning her

talents to direct this craft.

Geno’s Steaks, Philadelphia’s most
iconic cheesesteak restaurant, is hosting a fundraiser on Saturday, September 13th, for Kirk Crandall, a young
man who suffers from paralysis following a 2012 car crash. Geno Vento, was
touched by Kirk’s story when they met
at the Magee Rehabilitation center last
year. Kirk was recently accepted to
the prestigious Barwis Methods rehab
program in Michigan, led by Mike Barwis of Discovery Channel’s American
Muscle.
Against all odds, Kirk has begun
moving his arms and legs. A year with
Mike Barwis is the most intensive
treatment he can receive; Barwis has
been known to perform miracles for
professional athletes and those recovering from injuries. However, a year in
the Barwis neurological reengineering
program costs over $50,000.
A portion of the sales on September

It’s hard to believe the
summer is almost over,
but the Tri-State area has
two great opportunities
to extend the season in
Margaritaville! Yes, grab
your tequila and search for
that salt shaker! Jimmy
Buffett is back on tour and
pumping up Parrotheads
nationwide!
Born in Mississippi in 1946
(can you believe Uncle
Jimmy’s almost 70?), Buffett primarily grew up in
Alabama. He picked up the
guitar while a freshman at
Auburn University, but ironically ended up back in MS,
first at Pearl River Community College and finally
graduating with a Bachelor’s
Degree from University of
Southern Mississippi in
1969.
Buffett got his start as
a country musician in
Nashville and released
his first album, Down to
Earth, in 1970 and spent
time as a street player in
New Orleans. A year later,
he traveled to Key West
with country star Jerry Jeff
Walker and moved there
shortly thereafter. This is
where Buffett developed his
signature “gulf & western”
style.
In the span of Jimmy’s
four and a half decade
career, he has released a
prolific 28 albums which
have spawned a lifetime of
hits. In fact, Buffett and his
“Coral Reefer Band” have a
list of standards they play at
every show called “The Big
8.” These include the best
of all beach bum favorites
like “Volcano,” “Come
Monday,” “Cheeseburger in
Paradise,” and of course,
“Margaritaville.”
Despite his laid back,
seemingly casual approach
to life, Jimmy Buffett is far
more than just a partying
performer. He’s actually a
very astute and successful
businessman and owns the
Margaritaville Café restaurant chain with 30 locations
worldwide, including several
hotel and casino properties.
He also co-developed the
Cheeseburger in Paradise
concept with OSI Restaurant
Parnters (parent company of
Outback Steakhouse) which
now has 18 stores.
As if that wasn’t enough,
Buffett also created the
Landshark Bar & Grill spots
that are located in Atlantic
City and Myrtle Beach. In
2006, he joined forces with
Anheuser Busch to create
Margarita Brewing Company
and release Land Shark
Lager. An avid sports fan,
Buffett is also part owner of
two minor league baseball
teams and has collaborated
with the Miami Dolphins
and New Orleans Saints on
some projects.
The Poobah of Parrotheads
owns a record label, had
acting roles and cameo
appearances in multiple
TV shows and movies, and
co-created the Margaritaville
Online game. Of course,
he is also a bigtime philanthropist and has supported
myriad charities since 1981.
Not only is Mr. B. a stunning singer/songwriter,
restauranteur, and business mogul, he also holds
a significant place in literary
history after having published two novels (Tales from
Margaritaville and Where
Is Joe Merchant?) and an
autobiography (A Pirate
Looks at 50). He is only
one of only eight writers to
have their books reach #1
on both the New York Times
fiction and non-fiction best
seller list.
Jimmy Buffett has toured
every single year since 1976
and this year is no different! He and his merry Coral
Reefer Band are currently
touring!

OOT In Remembrance: Robin Williams
by L. Ramage’
I think the whole planet
sighed a very heavy sad sigh
on August 11, 2014 when we
all heard the news that Robin
Williams passed. He was only
63. Now mind you 63 now is
really today’s 53 years young!
He can never ever be replaced.
So much amazing talent!
Gone Gone forever and once
you’re gone that’s it No coming
back which brings me to why
such an amazing guy would
take his own life. Depression
is a fickle thing and Ok now
we’re all on this band wagon
for now to make Depression
more of an awareness after
Robin’s passing. Life is such
a valuable gift! It really is! And
Robin MacLaurin Williams
made the most of his gift. He
was discovered doing stand up
comedy in San Francisco in the
Mid 70’s. Landing him initially
on Happy Days then onto the
spin off fame with “Mork and
Mindy” from 1978-1982. Who
didn’t just love that show! He
was a natural!
His first film “Popeye” In
1980, Then “The World According to Garp” and “Good
Morning Vietnam” led the
threshold of so many more
incredible movies he would do!
Impressively he was nominated
three times at the Academy
Awards for Best Actor. And won
the Academy award for Best
supporting Actor in “Good Will
Hunting” To continue his merriment of success he won two
Emmy’s and four Golden Globes
and to top that off, Two more
Screen Actors Guild awards and
Five Grammies! Yes Five!
Little Known facts was that
Robin Born in Chicago in 1951,
his mother was a former model
and his dad was a big Senior
Executive for Ford Motor Co.
They moved to Michigan and
They lived in a large 40 room
farm home on 20 acres. He had
two brothers and also a maid.
Williams was sited for being
extremely shy (can you imagine
that?) through out school. And
excelled in Soccer. In his teens
his dad retired and moved the
family westward where Williams
started becoming “Out of His
shell” and voted “Most Likely
Not to Succeed” Ha! How about
that!
He was not lucky or maybe he
was in the field of romance with
having 3 wives and some Questionable affairs (Arnie move over
on that one) which produced his
three children that he adored
and doted over. Williams was
stated “My Children give me a
Great sense of Wonder, just to
see them develop into these
extraordinary human beings”
He was quite close to the late
Actor “Christopher Reeves” who
he met in NY studying at the
school of “Julliard”. Over the
years they maintained their bond
and even After Reeves terrible
accident and he ran out of medical Insurance. Robin stepped up
to the plate and paid for many
of Christopher’s expenses out
of his own pocket! After Reeves
and also his Wife Dana passed
shortly there after, Robin made
sure he helped provide financial
Support for Reeve’s 14 yr old
son! He did so much too in the
world of Philanthropy and traveled to support the troops often!
What a guy huh! Where’s that
lump in your throat now? We
really lost an amazing person on
so many levels! We ask, didn’t
he realize how special he was?
I choose this hand drawn picture
of Robin that has been going
around facebook for this article.
Wish we knew who the artist
was. Its not only so amazing
but it’s the ultimate capture of
his life, his success his being!
There had a very small quiet
private family service where
they scattered Robin’s Ashes in
the San Francisco Bay. May he
finally find peace and contentment in his next journey. He left
this planet so well loved and
admired! NaNu NaNu!

Generation Next
Generation Next has been a
mainstay in the club and private event business for over a
decade and with a composition
of some of the most talented
musicians in the tri-state area it
is no surprise that Generation
Next continues to dominate
stages up and down the east
coast. This has already been
an exceptional summer for
Generation Next, having performed from north shore clubs
like the Parker House to south
Jersey staples like The Windrift
in Avalon and Carney’s in Cape
May. New York and Atlantic
City casinos and weddings
that have taken the band all
the way out to San Diego, CA
have rounded out an amazing
season.
Although the high energy
lineup is a true powerhouse,
Generation Next also breaks
into many configurations to
suit the need of any venue.
Solo happy hours with guitar player and vocalist Paul
Zogby, acoustic duo evenings
with Paul and lead singer Cara
Lynne, summer deck jams
adding drummer Lou Mauro, dream wedding reception,

COBRA COMMAND
From the depths of the
mundane emerges Cobra Command. Philadelphia’s premiere
5 piece cover band. With roots
in pop, rock, alternative, metal,
emo and country, Cobra Command brings a new and unique
sound and vision to the table.
Having all come from touring
original bands, Cobra Command’s combined talent and
experience shine through in
their electrifying live shows.
Along with their live full band
performance, Cobra Command also delivers acoustically.
Though they are gearing up
for their first string of full band
shows ever, you may have seen
their acoustic performances
in the Philly area throughout
the summer. They were one of
Susquehanna Bank Center’s
resident VIP Club entertainers, having played shows like
Motley Crue, Paramore, Luke
Bryan and will be wrapping up
the summer with the Miranda
Lambert. Cobra Command was
also the happy hour entertainer
for Landmark Americana in
University City for the month of
August.
Fronting the band is Atlanta
native, Carly Krantz. Formerly
signed to LA based record label
Sumerian Records, Carly spent
many years on the road touring
with her original band opening
for many international acts such
as A Day to Remember and
Pierce the Veil. Her music was
featured on MTV’s The Hills and
she was a top 200 contender
for season 2 of The Voice.
When Carly linked up with
guitarists and Philadelphia natives Shawn Fanning and Justin
O’Brien in the winter of 2013, it
was clear they had something
special. The band didn’t fully
come to life until the addition
of drummer Daniel Koutouzakis, formerly of the successful
Florida cover band, The ATeam.
Rounded out by the rhythm
and style of Carly’s former label
mate, bassist Jon Turner…Cobra Command was born.
It won’t take long to see what
sets Cobra Command apart
from other area cover bands.
Their set list is extensive and
encompasses everything from
classic rock songs like “Shook
Me All Night Long” and “Boys
of Summer” to top 40 songs
like “Toxic” and “Just Dance”.
Don’t expect to hear the same
tired versions of the same old
songs. Cobra Command’s
combined musicianship and
production skills allow them
to rearrange songs and create
an all new, never before heard
experience. From the lighting
to their graphic design, Cobra
Command does everything
themselves with the same intensity they have on the stage.
You won’t want to miss it.
Cobra Command is: Carly
Krantz - vocals and synths,
Shawn Fanning - guitar and
programming, Justin O’Brien
- guitar and vocals, Jon Turner
- bass, Daniel Koutouzakis drums and percussion
To keep up with all of Cobra
Command’s happenings you
can follow them on their Facebook, www.facebook.com/cobracommandmusic or log onto
their website:www.cobracommandmusic.com

of Journey, ZZ Top, Bad Company, Foreigner, Red Hot Chili
Peppers, Elton John, Green Day
and Chicago to just to name
a few, they top that off with a
tremendous Motown Medley

a chance to be a special one.
Size, speed and football IQ are
qualities this group has shown.
What kind of impact will this
class have on the success or
failure of this season?
It is going to be fun to watch
and see as the season unfolds.
Here is a look at one of this
year’s draft picks who could
have the biggest impact on the
season.
Beau Allen has looked like an
impact player since OTAs.
The 6-foot-2, 333-pound nose
tackle out of Wisconsin has all
the assets needed to be a successful run stuffer: Size, talent
and quick feet.
Defensive coordinator Bill
Davis said Allen was picked
because of all the things he can
bring to the table.
“We have a bunch of guys we
picked that have NFL skill sets,”
Davis said. “Beau in particular
has got great size for the position of nose and quick feet to
match that size. That’s really
the combination in the NFL, the
bigger the body, they can still
move their feet, you really get
excited about (those) guys. The
first couple of days in pads, he’s
been a very pleasant, not surprise, because when we picked
him, we were excited about him
being where he was, and the
fact that we could get him on
our team and see what he could
do at nose.”
Against the New England
Patriots in the Birds second
preseason game, Allen made
an impact the very first play in
which he entered the game.
Allen got a great jump at the
snap of the ball and appeared to
distract Tom Brady for a blink of
an eye. That was just enough as
the future Hall of Fame quarterback made a bad throw that
was picked off by cornerback
Cary Williams who took it to
the house for the game’s first
touchdown.
“I actually didn’t see the pass,”
Allen said recalling the play.
“As a defensive lineman you’re
always rushing the ball when
those picks happen. I just heard
the stadium go really quiet, then
I looked and saw all the offensive linemen take off, so I was
trying to get a block and lead
the convoy. We had a lot of guys
make a lot of good hustle plays,
make some blocks and eventually led to a score.”
Allen is not going to post big
numbers, like the play against
the Patriots, his job is to set up
teammates to make plays on
the ball.
Teammate Jason Kelce, the
Eagles starting center who lines
up against Allen in practice, says
the rookie is blessed with the
right tools to be a good nose
tackle.
“Beau’s got a lot of weight
behind him, he’s a very strong
player,” Kelce said. “And then on
top of that he’s got really good
agility. Between him, Bennie Logan and Damion Square, I have
my hands full every single day.”
Allen was handful every game
at Wisconsin.
Watch a Big 10 game while
Allen was playing there and you
will see, more often than not, he
tied up two or more offensive
linemen or running backs, creating opportunities for the Badgers
defense.
“I played a lot of backside
A-gap last year (at Wisconsin)...
which means we got a lot of
scoop blocks between the
center and the guard. Our
linebackers played the front
side A-gap, so we had a
linebacker behind me...No. 44
Chris Borland (third round pick
by 49ers)...he got most of the
stats. The scheme here is a
little different. But I think the
general idea of the 3-4 defense
is the same. Use big d-lineman
to plug up the inside, take care
of those inside gaps and get
the ball outside.”
Allen said he couldn’t evaluate the Eagles 2014 draft class,
“That’s for you guys as outsiders to see,” the seventh round
pick said.
But he did understand the
importance of making an
impact. That impact does not
necessarily mean a sack or
catching a running back behind
the line of scrimmage.
Allen said the best way for
him to have success and gain
the trust of his coaches and
teammates is to stay in the
moment and just focus on the
task at hand.
“I’m just trying to take a short
view on things,” Allen said. “I
am not going to look ahead.
I don’t even know what our
schedule looks like or who we
play. We play the Jaguars on
opening day and after that I
have no idea. I had a friend call
me and tell me how he can’t
wait to see us play the Packers...in October...I didn’t even
know were playing the Packers. I told him I’m just thinking
about practice today and going
to meetings. So I think if you
take things one step at a time
you’ll end up where you want
to be.”

Kashmir Covered Zeppelin At The Keswick Theatre
on Saturday, September 20th
By Kevin Law, Owner of
PhillyRockRadio.com and
host of The Saloon Rock
Club, Thursdays at 7 p.m.
At Philly Rock Radio we
like to say we keep the
music and its spirit alive. It
would be safe to say that
tribute bands share that
same promise and when
those that do stay faithful to
the material and band image; they literally bring the
music back to life.
Kashmir is a premier Led
Zeppelin tribute band that
performs all over the country. On Saturday, September
20th, they take the stage at
the Keswick Theatre in Glenside, PA. The band is the
complete package with the
look, the feel and delivery of
pitch perfect performances
of hits like “Whole Lotta
Love,” “Stairway to Heaven,”
and, of course, “Kashmir”.
They will transport you
back to the quintessential
rock band’s heyday of the
’70s. Take a look at some
of their performance videos
on YouTube and you’ll see
that they easily back up their
website’s claim that you will
see the “most authentic representation of Led Zeppelin
on a modern stage”.
The band’s lead singer,
donning the persona of
Robert Plant, is Jean Violet
who formed the New York
based band in 2000. He had
previously performed with
another Led Zeppelin tribute
act named Time Of Dying,
however, his band mates did
not want to expand out of
New York City and recognizing the potential of fan interest around the country, Jean
formed Kashmir. “I give any
person that plays in a Led
Zeppelin tribute band a lot of
credit and respect, it is not
an easy act to perform and a
bad Led Zeppelin Tribute will
be tarred and feathered for
the most part. Some sound
just like the record, others
look like the original Zeppelin. I would say we have the
right combination of both.
We are a great sounding
live band that makes you
feel like you are watching
an actual live Led Zeppelin

performance,” said Violet.
The four members of
Kashmir give faithful portrayals of their iconic personas
on stage. Guitarist Andy Urban pulls out the full Jimmy
Page arsenal, complete with
the legendary doubleneck
guitars, bow solos and
healthy doses of Theremin.
Andy will make you feel like
you are in the presence of
the master. Paul Cooper has
been drumming since age 9
and has played all over the
world. His prowess behind
the kit is well known and
he’s worked as a successful
session musician for years
in NYC. When it comes to
recreating the brilliance
of John Bonham, Cooper
subscribes to Bonham’s less
is more style. Bassist and
New Orleans native, Felix
Hanemann, plays the role of
John Paul Jones. In addition
to laying down the classic
Jones’ bass lines, Felix has
his own place in rock history
with a band he formed in the
early ’80s called Zebra. He
along with Randy Jackson
and Guy Gelso produced
some great albums back
then for Atlantic Records
that included tunes, “Tell Me
What You Want”, “Who’s
Behind The Door?” and another personal favorite “Wait
Until Summers Gone.” Zebra
formed in New Orleans,
but made NYC their home
base early on. Ironically, the
band was well known for
their Zeppelin covers too.
Zebra, now in their 37th year
together, still continue to
perform.
In addition to seeing this
group of talented musicians
perform as the legendary
Led Zeppelin, I urge you
to get out to The Keswick
Theatre. It is one of our
local treasures that offer
tremendous sound in an
intimate setting. There is
not a bad seat in the house,
and you won’t miss a
minute of the show should
you need to leave your seat
in order to partake in a few
beverages at the bar. This
will be the second appearance of Kashmir at The
Keswick and the band is really looking forward to coming back to the Philadelphia
area. When I asked Jean
about it he remembers, “We
had a great crowd last year
when we played in Glenside
and it really made for an
outstanding show. We love
playing to a live audience,
and we get a lot of people
who thank us for bringing
them back to the time they
saw Led Zeppelin in concert, or a younger adult
who says that this is the
closest thing that they will
ever get to a live Zeppelin
performance.”
The Keswick Theatre is
located at 291 N. Keswick Ave in Glenside, PA.
Tickets for the Kashmir
performance on Saturday, September 20th can
be purchased online at
keswicktheatre.com, or
at the Keswick box office
the night of the show. For

Tribute Band, Kashmir,

You walk in to the place
with all the enjoyment of
your Christmas morning or Halloween night
anticipation. You and
almost taste the fun
you’re about to have
and are waiting with joy
of the laughter and the
fine conversation that
is about to happen. It’s
a birthday party for a
relative and it’s over a
family member’s house,
or maybe it’s just a trip
to the local pub where
some friends are meeting. It’s still a time of
joy coming up and your
excitement was growing all day as the time
got shorter and shorter
until them moment it
was time to travel to the
place. You head down
the sidewalk or across
the parking lot and
notice the signs or the
scenery because you’re
in a receptive mood for
a positive life experience. You climb the
steps and go in and just
as you search for the
friendly faces you see
a “particular person”.
That person sees you
and immediately turns
their head to not look at
you or in fact you see
them immediately leave
and go outside. They
aren’t leaving the situation or the event, no
that would be too kind,
they are leaving to
go outside just to
avoid greeting and
respecting YOU.
No they “Aren’t
Speaking to YOU”
this is the situation,
it goes on from
time to time in
some families and
groups and actually goes on more
than you think.
This situation is
something that
few people I’ve known
have actually talked
about but it is, just like
any other form of abuse,
an act of cruelty and in
a more common term,
bullying that should be
called what it is. It is in
some cases a mutual
agreement between two
parties, two people to
have an argument and
choose not to discuss the argument like
grownups and decide
to inflict this situation
on everyone they know.
This is a “Power Play”
and the act of inconsiderate people in general
and whether it’s right or
wrong, it’s still wrong.
It’s the act of a weak
mind and I cannot say
that my mind hasn’t
weakened to this level
because it has. In fact
as I write I can remember situations where I
felt I was wronged, or I
felt the level of service
at a favorite spot had
deteriorated and or I’d
gotten a bad meal. I’m
sure you know the feeling and have even gone
to the point of actively
“boycotted” a particular
restaurant because “in
your own mind”, something happened there
that made you “mad”
and thus you’re mad
at the place and you’re
taking it out on one person while at the same
time without consideration, you’re actually

taking it out on more people than
you want to realize. The sad part
is that people who are your friends
want to love you and like you and
want to be around you, but in certain situations they cannot because
of your private little “wars” that are
going on with people that you both
know and many time love as well.
They are uneasy in the presence
of the warring parties and have to
be “careful” of what they say and
try to walk the fine line of playing
both sides which sometimes leads
to further consequences of “taking
sides” even though it’s not their
fight and they may or may not even
know or care what the fight was
about. Nonetheless, it’s this “situation” that has cast a pall over the
event, a family party, a group outing, and or just a night out. It goes
so far as to affect the plans when
people start to invite certain people
to a special gathering. They have
to consider and spend valuable
brain time to wonder who is coming and even IF they’ll come and
have to consider who may have to
be left out or even if both parties
should be left out because of the
awareness of the personal animosity that in general both parties, the
wronged and the not wronged, are
spewing around like the particles
of methane that alert us of a bad
smell. This is a wrong thing and
though we always say we cannot “stop human nature”, maybe
it’s about time we did. Maybe it’s
about time that we at least tried to
cure the problems with the whole
“I’m not speaking to you” mentality, because it’s worth doing. As
we look out each day and see the
bright sunshine and wonder about
what tomorrow will bring. As we
write our life’s story down wondering if there’s enough content in
there that anyone else would spend
a moment reading it; we need to
consider the fleeting time of life that
really exists. We need to understand that bringing other people
into our differences, either by
voluntary or imposed situations is
wrong. It’s a fundamental need for
people to respect each other and
observe the right of everyone (and
everything) to a “chance” at happiness. No one person or group is
entitled to happiness at the direct
expense of others. This runs the
gamut of life like the DNA that
makes us tick; because after all,
we are all basically the same.
Money in the bank account,
cars, wealth, power over people,
through jobs, guns, planes and
bombs, or even the power that
comes from being “mad” at each
other and letting it show and
extend to our loved ones is a
glaring example of “disrespect”
to another person, another being, another “equal” living thing.
So as you spend your morning
on your walk, or on the throne
pondering life, or driving in your
car at rush hour, or just sitting up
in your bed, which you do every
day, take if you would the time to
consider everyone; think about
what your actions or non-actions
are doing to the “innocent” ones.
The ones who have to have their
happiness compromised even
ever so slightly by a personal
rift, a difference in opinion, or a
choice of different ways of life
and thinking, and say, I know this
is wrong and I’m going to work
on my own mind to recognize
and realize a change of point of
view. Make the conscious decision to forgive transgressions or
perceived wrong doing and focus
on what’s real; each of us and
the joy that we deserve for being
lucky enough to be living today
say NO! and refuse to stand with
those who support hate and
disrespect. It is a gift to write, it’s
a gift to play, it’s a gift to follow
your dreams, whatever they are;
Think it over and find your heart;
it’s all we can ask…see you
soon…Dac…

All I gotta say to my friends is “Paddy
Whacks”, after a very positive joyful response,
they always ask me which one my dude? On this
God given day, I choose to do a foodie review on
the Welsh Road location just off of the Roosevelt
Boulevard in NE Philadelphia. If you have never
been, it’s just behind the huge Northeast Shopping Center.
This really cool concept of bringing an Irish
pub together with a casual sports bar, combining
these ideas & opening them all in an awesome
city like Philadelphia has to be the best idea
since sliced bread. Since opening the 1st “Paddy
Whacks” location at Welsh Road in May of 2004,
all I have been hearing is spectacular & exciting
comments. Owned by a few local hometown
brothers, “Casey Jones”, “Mathew Jones” &
“Donald Jones (DJ)“ have taken on the challenge & are making these spectacular taverns
very successful. To be perfectly honest, your boy
“Roundhouse Ron” has been to all the “Paddy
Whacks Irish Sports Pubs” locations during this
past year & it has always been a freakin maxed
out blast.
When entering “Paddy Whacks”, you can’t
help but notice the sleek contemporary Irish pub
feel with classily framed Notre Dame football
memorabilia on the walls, to the modern high top
tables & let’s not forget the numerous Irish beers
on tap. Waiting on my foodie partner “Angela”
& myself, was this very attractive & personable
young lady who goes by the name of “Brianna”.
As we both settled in, a round of beverages was
in order, with mine being a Jack Daniels & Coke.
With the quickness, my gurl “Santina” & my dude
“John” (bartenders) jumped on
our adult beverage order, then
dazzled us with
knowledge, while
treating “Angela”
& I to a few sweet
cold libations.
Reviewing
the exceptional
dining menu
choices, I noticed
a very nice
selection of appetizers, soups
& salads to start
me off with. If you
like soup, you
will simply love
“Paddy Whacks”
“Irish Potato
Soup” which is
a thick potato
soup topped with
bacon bites scallions & melted
cheese. A few
other tantalizing
soups selections
consist of the
“Cheesesteak
Soup” a creamy,
cheesy soup that
tastes just like
a damn Philly
cheesesteak, or the “Chicken Parm Soup” that
gives you all the flavor of a fresh chicken parm
but in a nice hot bowl. Things like these spectacular creamy creations carry a ton of flavor
& really warms up my belly on a cold winter
evening.
If you happen to be a chili lover, the folks
here at “Paddy Whacks” are taking over with a
bombelicious taste of the old west. The “Paddy
Chili” is a famous blend of spices, red beans,
onions, peppers & ground beef topped with
melted cheddar cheese & chopped scallions. If
this doesn’t get your taste buds rocking like Elvis
in Memphis, then I don’t know what will. BAM,
POW, BOOM
Now, as we all move onto the tasty appetizer
selections, a few things were a definitely must
have, like the “Philly Cheesesteak Rolls” packed
a powerful punch with mini cheese steak stuffed
in a crispy shell. The “Loaded Paddy Chips” are
freshly cut potatoes fried to perfection, piled
high & smothered in “Paddy Whacks” medium
spicy chili with melted cheese. And one of my favorites have to be their “Almost Famous Wings”
served in either a mild, medium, hot or spicy
garlic seasoning. These wings are off da focking
charts good and I will be placing them on my
“Roundhouse Ron’s Top 10 Of Philadelphia’s
Best Hot Wingz List”.
Just to give my brain a little break from all
these “Paddy Whacks Irish Sports Pub” starters,
before I move onto the main dishes, I decide to
walk around & introduce myself to this kitchen
staff of funky flavor town. “Chef Carmen” along
with “Chef Jason” have this operating room on
lock down with surgical precession as they are
creating sum crazy wild azz culinary creations.
The salads are all super stunning & outstanding, such as the “Paddywhack Salad” sliced
chicken strips served over a blend of romaine
& iceberg lettuce with cucumbers, tomatoes &
onions, topped with bacon bites, Monterey Jack
cheddar cheese with your choice of dressing.
How can you freakin go wrong with these lettuce
masterpieces like the “Cajun Chicken Salad”
blackened Cajun chicken breast sliced over their
pub salad with Monterey Jack & cheddar cheese
with croutons, served with honey mustard dressing.
A few of my friendz rocked out the sandwich
options, while I just moved right into the pub favorites. But, I did sample sum bites & must refer
you to the “The Paddy Melt” with select chicken
tenders, bacon & American cheese on grilled
sourdough bread. Let’s not forget the “Pork Roll
& Cheese Sliders” wit freshly grilled Taylor’s pork
roll, served wit melted American cheese on their
Martin’s slider rolls. You gotta freakin try the
“Spicy Meat-A-Ball Sandwich” perfectly sized
meatballs along wit “Paddy Whacks” special
homemade marinara sauce, topped off wit
Pepper Jack cheese & fried onions all served on
a Nicky roll. All of the sexy sandwiches & wonderful wraps are served with fresh-cut “Paddy
Chips”.

DininG ArounD TowN with Roundhouse Ron
The room light up with smells of aroma
ecstasy as my pub favorite entrée was being
severed. My “Chicken Parmesan” consist of
freshly breaded chicken breast lightly fried,
topped with marinara sauce & provolone
cheese, served with a bed of linguini. This
work of art tasted even better then it freakin
smelled. When you go to “Paddy Whacks”,
you must also try the “The Open Face Roasted
Turkey” with oven roasted turkey served over
toasted sourdough bread with their country
mashed potatoes & topped with house made
gravy. Or, an Irish specialty, the “Shepherd’s
Pie” with lean ground beef sautéed with carrots, peas, onions & piped country mashed
potatoes topped with their house made gravy.
Believe me party people, you will not be disappointed in these dynamic tasteful culinary
dishes.
“Paddy Whacks” also has a very sinful
selection of desserts, as they are all designed
to impress your sweet taste buds. Just think
about, “Homemade Spice Cake” topped with
peppermint whipped cream, candied walnuts & fresh berries, how about the “Kilkenny
Chocolate Cake” a volcanic eruption of chocolate goodness served with creamy vanilla ice
cream or the “Funnel Cake Fries” sweet &
delicious, made to order & topped with fluffy
confectioner’s sugar. Your killin me smallz,
cause these are all so damn scrumptious.
