Mixer photos courtesy of Vicky Surles Ellen Riger, chairperson of the Chamber’s Holiday On Duty Fund, explained the program that provides Holiday meals to our local Public Safety personnel. 4 Business and Residents Contribute to 2012 Holiday On Duty Campaign The Holiday On Duty Fund of the Wheaton & Kensington Chamber of Commerce ensures that our local Public Safety personnel have Holiday meals on the Thanksgiving and Christmas Day Holidays. Local agencies served are: the Montgomery County Police stationed in this area, the Wheaton Volunteer Rescue Squad, and the Kensington Volunteer Fire Department During these times, most eating establishments are closed in the area, and the public safety officers handling emergencies find it difficult to locate open restaurants while on duty. Every contribution – large and small, helps the Chamber realize its goal of feeding the officers on duty during the holidays. The Chamber is also grateful for the vendors who make this project possible. This is the 14th year the Chamber has sponsored the project, and contributions from our business and residential Communities are essential, notes chairperson Ellen Riger. This project is the community’s tribute to our Public Safety personnel. The Chamber thanks all of our contributors for being so generous. The generous donations of toys and gifts from our community were delivered to local children for Christmas by Santa and his helpers. – coordinating volunteers, toy box pickups, wrapping sessions, and delivery – with three Santas, and one Mrs. Santa. The toy drive originally got underway after a Wheaton mother and her six children lost their home and a son in a fire shortly before Christmas. After the story made the news, the Wheaton Volunteer Rescue Squad station was overflowing with gifts. Deputy Chief Steve Sobolewski and the squad decided to give out the extra gifts to needy children, and the tradition has continued each Christmas. Cont. on page 8 Angels activities photos courtesy of MHP and volunteers. The Angels for Children Toy Drive has provided gifts for the less fortunate children in the Wheaton area for the past thirteen years.
