Welcome
Welcome to Summer @ the Hall 2015!
As the director of the program, it is my privilege to invite you to join us for another
fun-filled, safe and educational summer! Our camps/courses are designed with kids
of all ages in mind. We even have some classes for adults! Our programs are open to
families from the surrounding community and across the country from May 26 to
July 31, 2015. The program complements busy summer schedules by offering classes
full-day or just mornings or afternoons.
Our main priority is to give your child the best experience possible! We understand
that parents want to give their children the world and we believe it’s as simple as
giving each child a safe and creative environment to explore, create, laugh and learn
while growing and making friends. Our days are full of laughter and fun as children
are allowed to be children in a structured and supervised environment.
All classes are taught by highly qualified instructors from Saint Mary’s Hall and the
greater educational community and professionals. Safety is also a big priority with
24/7 campus security and a fence surrounding our 65+ acre campus.
Enrolling in our programs continues to be an easy process through our online
registration portal. If you are a returning family, all your information is still in the
system. Our programmers have created another layer of password protection this year,
so if you have problems logging in, please call or email. For our new families, simply go
online to www.smhall.org/enrichment select the registration button and set up your
account with a login you can use throughout this summer and for years to come.
Thank you for choosing Summer @ the Hall for your child’s summer fun experience.

Extended Care Program — Ages 3–11 Years
The Extended Care Program provides care for children enrolled in Summer @ the Hall before and after our
Summer Programs (7–9 am) and (3–6 pm). There will be relaxed recreational activities, including games and
outdoor play, during these hours. All classes are co-educational unless otherwise stated. This program is offered
as a service to parents whose children are attending camps and courses this summer. We encourage parents to
sign up in advance for our Extended Care Program to help our administration better plan for staffing needs.
Please enroll your child in Extended Care at the same time you register for the summer camp. We understand
that circumstances do not always permit early or planned enrollment. Our program is also designed to meet the
needs of parents who have unforeseen scheduling difficulties. Don’t panic; we assure you that your child will be
supervised and cared for in the Extended Care facility where he or she can play games and have fun. Campers
who are brought to campus more than 15 minutes before their scheduled camp time or who are left on campus
more than 15 minutes after their scheduled camp time will be entered into the Extended Care Program. For this
supervised time, parents will be billed the rate listed below. Late fees will be charged after 6 pm.
For questions and information, call Linda Blanks (210) 669-7941 or enrichment at (210) 483-9124.

are also welcome to take other camps in conjunction with
the day camp. Lunch is not provided for children in this
camp, so please pack a lunch for your child! Due to peanut
allergies, please do not bring anything produced with
peanuts, peanut oil or peanut products.
• Campers may enroll for half-day mornings, half-day
afternoons or full-day camps.
• On day one, parents feel free to park and come into the
building to settle your child in and meet the instructors
• Our goal is to greet your child and escort him or her to
camp on arrival at the front of the building

zip-lock bag tagged with your child’s name.
• Children must be potty trained prior to attending camp
(no diapers or pull-ups allowed)

just starting out with scratchboard, all the basics will be
covered…if you are already an enthusiast, Suzy will teach
you how to take your etchings to the next level with shading
and design. In this class, students will use various types of
commercial scratchboard as well as make their own. A wide
variety of etching implements will be offered. Older students
may use etching blades; younger artists will use wooden
and safe-metal stylus instruments to create their designs.
Projects will vary in complexity and be age appropriate for
participating artists.

Brain Burst!
Bucketload of Board Games
According to the latest research on the brain and its plasticity,
experience/training changes the brain. “Learning is rewiring.
The classroom must provide stimulating activities that
create the desired activation in the brain, leading to desired
change,” says Dr. Janet Nay Zadina from her book, Multiple
Pathways to the Student Brain: Energizing and Enhancing
Instruction. This classroom will do just that! This session will
provide students with multiple and varied ways of “growing”
their brains, as well as information about how their brains
learn. We will explore exercises in logic and critical thinking
(teacher-directed, group and individual) and experiment
using the OSMO, a mixture of technology and interactive
learning which trains students to think outside the box and to
learn/adjust thinking after “mistakes.”
So many board games; so little time! Come and enjoy a full
day and a week’s worth of fun & games. Whether you prefer
games of skill, luck, or strategy, the day will be bursting with
excitement. Choose a favorite game you play all the time or
try something new & adventurous. Spin the wheel, roll the
dice, choose a card, spend your imitation money wisely, and
outwit your opponents to become a champion. In addition,
learn where and how these games originated. So take a
chance, sign up, and come ready to play!

Goosebumps Spooky Adventures
Do you love things that go bump in the night? Then, campers
beware… you’re in for a scare! This camp has it all: slimy science,
creepy cooking, alarming art, and spooky story writing! Even if
you have not read the Goosebumps books, you are welcome to
join us. Each day, we will do three different activities centered
on our “Goosebumps” theme, spending time both indoors
and outdoors. On one day at camp, for example, we will make
spider sculptures from craft wire, whip up a batch of edible
Jell-O eyeballs to munch on, and then head outside to make our
own slime and compete in a “slime pit” relay race. Throughout
the week, we will also begin writing and illustrating our own
spooky stories, drawing on the storytelling techniques used
in the popular Goosebumps books by R.L. Stine. Sign up for
this fun-filled camp and join two experienced teachers for an
adventure into the spine-tingling world of Goosebumps books!
Materials: Students must bring a real, size-appropriate guitar
with nylon strings to class each day.

Handwriting/Art Connection
Drawing is the first form of written communication for most
children. Young children express themselves through lines
and color long before they master the alphabet. Drawing and
handwriting require many of the same skills. By combining
these skills in a supportive setting of discovery and practice,
students become less frustrated and more proficient at both.
In this handwriting and drawing course, students will practice
fine motor skills and learn to see the complex objects of their
imagination as a combination of simple shapes and lines.

Helping Your Children Eat Healthy
Healthy eating can stabilize children’s energy, sharpen their
minds, and even out their moods. While peer pressure and
TV commercials for junk food can make getting kids to
eat well seem impossible, there are steps parents can take
to instill healthy eating habits without turning mealtimes
into a battle zone. By encouraging healthy eating habits
now, you can make a huge impact on your children’s lifelong
relationship with food and give them the best opportunity to
grow into healthy, confident adults. It can be tough getting
kids to eat healthy when you’re on vacation or dashing
between sports practice, school, and family errands, but it
can be done! The next time fast food signs loom, and you’ve
got a car full of kids clamoring for junk food, win them over
to eating right with the tips you learn in this class.

Junior Journalists
With over eighty percent of adult reading and writing rooted
in nonfiction, you would think that kids would naturally
know how to “unpack” and comprehend this genre of reading.
Surprisingly, this is not the case. Kids need specific skills in
order to successfully navigate this nuanced text structure. This
course is designed to tap into the natural curiosity we have in
current events and informational text learning. We’ll navigate
the complexities of this genre by learning the functions of the
elements of nonfiction, discover how to write concise responses
to articles as well as write our own timely pieces, and tap into
topics that personally interest us.

Miniature Battles—Playing with History
Miniature Battle camps are for people interested in history,
strategy, math and games. Students will receive and paint
miniatures that relate to each camp for which they are a
participant. In these camps, students experience an interactive
appreciation of history from a completely different perspective.
Various periods of military history from 1500 B.C. to 1945 A.D.
are explored using hands-on experience in class. Instructors
explore events leading up to the conflicts of our past and our
students learn how tactics changed throughout history to
adjust to new science and technology. History is experienced
by re-fighting battles on a tabletop with miniature warriors in
which students paint to represent the uniforms of the period.
Through this process, students learn tactics, strategy, problem
solving skills, develop better math skills, team development
and much more. Students play battles with the miniatures they
paint, and after the last day of class, the students take home
their miniatures.
Students bring: one 12 inch ruler, one 3/0 & one 5/0 American
Painter Brush (from Michael’s or Hobby Lobby).
Miniature Battles—Battle Royale VIII
The two largest empires that produce cheese for the world have
declared war on each other over pricing, distribution and trade
routes. Both empires are calling up their forces for battle. Can
you step into the position of nobility as a Duke, an Earl, a
Count, a Baron or maybe a Lord and muster your troops for
war? So begins the war that covers the continent, the Great
War, known in history as, “The Cheese Wars!” Whether you
like cheese or not this is a great camp to learn about business,
strategy and have fun. Help decide who will control the Cheese
Commerce of the world!
Miniature Battles—DBA-Peloponnesian Wars
The Peloponnesian War was an ancient Greek war fought by
Athens and its empire against the Peloponnesian League led
by Sparta. Students will paint their City-State Greek armies
and either establish Sparta as Master of Greece or defend
Athens’s supremacy!

Miniature Battles—Flintloque Returns!
Miniature Battles—Hot Wheels (sort of…)
Back by popular demand, the world of Flintloque will
rage across the tabletop once again. Students will paint
their squads and previous students may bring their painted
minis from previous classes to have a huge battlefield full
of miniatures! Students need a 3/0 and a 5/0 paint brush to
paint their miniatures.
We will be using Matchbox and Hot Wheel cars modified into
post-apocalyptic, crudely-armored, gun-toting wagons, which
then proceed to chase each other around a radioactive desert
landscape attempting to destroy each other for absolutely
no bloody good reason what-so-ever. This is the game of
Axles and Alloys, an automotive combat-demolishing derby.
So bring a car, if you have one, to customize it in class or you
can use one of ours.
Miniature Battles—Gladiators
Time grows short as you escort your troupe toward the arena
for their first match. All of the training and pain they endured
to make it here, you hope that it will be profitable for you. The
doors part, the crowd roars as you stride to the center of the
arena with your Gladiators. Will this be the start of a glorious
career as a Ludus or merely the end? Welcome to the world
of RED SAND BLUE SKY—Heroes of the Arena! Students
need a 3/0 and a 5/0 paint brush to paint their Gladiators.
Miniature Battles—Go West Young Man
“This town ain’t big enough for all of us! Time for some of
y’all to be leavin’!” Walk down a dusty Wild West town and
try to survive the day in this western adventure. Students
learn to play the game of Gutshot, a Wild West miniature’s
game. We will visit the westerns towns of Wagon Wheel Gap
and La Tapatia.
Miniature Battles—Knights of the Air!
It’s 1916 and all across Europe, while men face last ditch
battles in the mud, while colorful biplanes fly in foggy skies
dueling each other like the medieval knights of another era.
Pilot one of these flying machines to shoot down your enemy,
complete recon missions and become a flying ace. Follow in
the footsteps of aces like Manfred von Richthofen, Eddie
Rickenbacker, George Guynemer and Francesco Baracca!
Students will take home a 1/144th scale WWI airplane.
Miniature Battles—SAGA—The Viking Age
Set sail for adventure to gain wealth and glory. You are
a Viking Warlord leading a band of raiders on conquest.
Will your SAGA be one of glory or despair? Only you can
determine that. VIKINGS!
Miniature Battles—Zombies
Zombies…you know what we are talking about. Everyone
knows about the outbreak. All you care about is staying alive
and staying alive means staying together. There is safety
in numbers. At least, this is what you were told. Can you
survive another day? Sign up and find out if you have what it
takes! Students need 3/0 and 5/0 brush to paint miniatures.

Model United Nations (MUN) Camp
Music Theory
For half of each day at camp, campers (“Delegates”) assume the
role of the UN Ambassador from a country other than their
own to discuss topics in international affairs. The first day of
camp, delegates will be assigned a specific country/person and
topic to conduct research during the first two days. Later in the
week, delegates will debate the substance of these topics with
considerable knowledge and understanding. Discussion topics
will range from greenhouse gas emissions to cyber-terrorism,
to a historical re-enactment of the Iran crisis of 1946 and
vary considerably from committee to committee. First camp
days’ morning sessions consist of formal debate coaching, as
campers will also participate in workshops on parliamentary
procedure, public speaking, debate, resolution writing and
critical thinking. Middle School & high school students new
to MUN are encouraged to participate. Experienced MUN
delegates will also work one-on-one with the participants, as
they prepare to participate in a one-day conference on the last
day of the camp. This workshop is offered twice this summer
and covers the same material each week.
Students will learn a comprehensive, in-depth introduction
to Music Theory. Music symbols, note reading, rhythm
recognition, ear training and the musical alphabet will be
taught. Practical application will be applied. Musical experience
is not required. Any and all instrumental and vocal students
are welcome.

activities will be enjoyed. Sessions will be taught by ESL/SSL
(second language) trained/certified instructors. Pupil/teacher
ratio is 6:1.
Read, Rock & Roll!
Favorite children’s books will come to life as your child learns
necessary phonics skills, then sets the books to music. Students
will play instruments, sing and dance, all while learning to
read! These activities are sure to energize your child’s learning.
Come and enjoy an “informance” each Friday where students
play music to accompany the books from that week. Different
books will be used each week and instruments will be provided.
Fun with Letters & Sounds
In this session, we will explore letters and their sounds, how
to blend letter sounds into words and begin to read, all with
multi-sensory activities, both oral and written, designed to
involve and entertain students, making learning FUN!
Let’s Eat a Rainbow
This session features colors and food! Students will classify
foods by color and food group. Children will learn and read
about new foods that are unique to many different cultures
and places around the world. Games, activies and songs will
reinforce food-related vocabulary in English. Math/science
skills during this session will include counting, weighing and
measuring, fractions and predicting.
On the Farm
In this fun farming session, campers will learn different animal
classifications. Through reading books and hearing stories,
students will get an overview of farm life and will bring it all
to life by making homemade butter and designing their own
“On the Farm” booklet to take home. Students will also work
on sight words and will be introduced to forming sentences by
putting vocabulary and sight words together! Again, games,
activities and songs will reinforce new vocabulary.

Reading Rocketeers the Next Level
Older students can now continue with Reading Rocketeers!
These classes were developed to follow-up on requests
from parents, teachers, and students for a more advanced
reading curriculum which remained true to the philosophy
of Reading Rocketeers. Reading Rocketeers the Next Level
will focus on comprehension skills and more advanced
phonics application while continuing to foster a true love of
reading. Reading, writing and other activities, both group
and individual, will be included.
Read it and Eat!
Enjoy summer reading while tickling your taste buds. Ann
M. Sanchez (Positive Alternative Learning) and budding
chef, Avery Pittman, will offer a fun-filled supplemental
week of reading and eating delight. Students will enjoy
yummy read-alouds, tasty individual reads and delectable
games and activities. Each day will feature different food
related literature, reading instruction and practice AND
delicious treats correlated to the literature of the day. We
might have a special visitor to share our recipes and fun.
Dig into Reading
This summer, we’re digging for reading comprehension
skills! Comprehension is the ability to not only read the
words on a page, but to understand what is happening.
In this camp, kids will move beyond the mechanics of
reading and learn the skills needed to better understand
and enjoy a story. Our teachers will help your child become
more confident and capable readers, using the strategies
of summarizing, clarifying, questioning, visualizing,
predicting and organizing. Dinosaur enthusiast or not, your
child won’t have to dig deep to have fun! Each class will
focus on dissecting a new and interesting dinosaur book,
complemented by hands-on activities and graphic organizers
designed to help them arrange information obtained from
the text!

Tennis
Tennis—Quick Start (Indoors)
This year’s tennis program will be both fun and challenging!
Beginning and experienced players of all ages will enjoy
individualized instruction. Four students to one USPTA
certified instructor will be the normal ratio. The summer
tennis program will offer the following levels:
The Quick Start Tennis Program follows the same logic as
other youth sports like baseball or soccer, which uses kidsized courts and kid-sized equipment. With the Quick Start
Tennis System, balls bounce lower, don’t move as fast through
the air and are easier to hit. Kids’ rackets are sized for small
hands and courts are smaller and easier to cover. By using
this format, the benefits are immediate and within a short
time, kids are rallying, playing and excited to keep playing.
That means kids will have more fun and less frustration.
Children are playing real tennis and having real fun. That
is what is most important for us at SMH. The camp will be
held inside the new gym and rackets will be provided.
Future Stars: (Ages 5–9): This level focuses on the basic
fundamentals of tennis technique taught through an
innovative and exciting curriculum.
Pre-Tournament: (Ages 10–13): This level focuses on
fundamentals of tennis technique and strategy. Progressing
toward entry-level competition is the emphasis of this
program. The exciting part of this program is taking the
fundamentals and designing your individual style of play.

The Write Right series began as a session to teach the steps
of the writing process in a fun and interactive way. Over
the summers, due to student and parent requests, it has
expanded to three different sessions, addressing the needs
of beginning writers in grades 1–2, students in grades 3–5
and students who understand the writing process, but need
additional instruction and support with the revision step.
