It has been wonderful to see so many more of our students bringing and eating healthier
lunches and recess snacks to school each day. The healthy messages that we have been
learning about at school are certainly making an impact with the students being able to
identify nutritious foods for meals and snacks. Last week all of the students also
participated in an engaging workshop titled ‘Smart Shopping’ presented by Clean Away.
During this workshop the students learnt about the effects of packaging on the
environment and how we as consumers can reduce, reuse and recycle packaging related
to food items. Many of our students recognised ways that they could reduce the amount
of packaging in their own lunch boxes by selecting natural products and using foods with
the least amount of packaging required to ensure it is transported safely to school. Our
preschoolers are also very active learners in this area of the environment and health with
their functioning vegetable garden and compost bin. The preschool students often use
their produce to make healthy snacks and add to their compost bin every day with their
fruit and vegetable scraps.

having an active lifestyle for our health. Page three of this newsletter gives some more
information about getting active. Thank you to all of our families who are supporting our
aim to teach the students about the importance of healthy lifestyles. We recognize that
many of these messages are modelled, taught and reinforced within the home.

Raffle Donations
We will be soon running a raffle to raise funds for the creative arts program at Sefton
Infants School. This raffle also allows us to have our special end of year whole school
concert. We are seeking your kind help with any prize donations that our school
community may be able to provide as prizes for this raffle. For example, it may be a
voucher for a service from a local company, new large toys or games, new small
whitegoods, electronics or other new, useful household items that you do not need. We
would greatly appreciate any items that would make great raffle prizes. Please give any
raffle donations to the school office. Thank you for your support. The raffle tickets will be
sent home soon.

Get Active
Presentation Assembly and School Picnics
Being healthy is not just about what you eat - it’s also about being active! The food you eat each day gives
your body energy for moving around. To be healthy you need to use up that energy by moving around as
much as you can each day. Moving around also helps your body build strong bones and strong muscles, and
helps keep you fit and coordinated.
Turn off the TV or computer and get active

Set a limit on the amount of time children watch television or spend on the computer. Two hours a day
is the maximum. Too much screen time limits physical activity.

On the weekend, live life instead of watching it on TV. Find a new place to hike, bike or run. When you
hear “I’m bored” – think of something active to do.

During the winter months, avoid allowing children to watch too much TV or play video games. Encourage active play, which builds social, mental and physical motor skills.
Why reduce TV time?





Studies have shown we use less energy watching TV than sitting still
TV influences the food choice of kids – Australia has a high rate of food advertising during children’s
viewing hours
TV replaces time a child can be active and enjoy physical activity
There is an association between TV watching and being overweight
40% of children 5 – 12 years report watching an average of two hours or more of television or videos a
day.
Screen-free things to do
Limit your child’s screen time to no more than one to two hours a day. This includes television, electronic
games and computer games. Offer alternatives to watching TV, until new, healthy habits are created. Some
alternatives are:
listen to music
go to the park
draw a picture
play cards
ride a bike
read a book
make a scrap book
hula hoop
play a board game
build a cubby house.
jump rope
play with your pet
do a crossword
learn a magic trick
learn to juggle
plant some seedlings
play hopscotch
learn to knit or crochet
create sidewalk art with chalk
The Not So Friendly Fruit Juice
Many people think fruit juice is a healthy option. While fruit juice contains some vitamins, it lacks fibre, antioxidants and other nutrients found in fruit. Fruit juices are high in sugar and energy, often containing similar
quantities of sugar found in soft drink. Drinking large amounts can lead to tooth decay and excess energy consumption.
Here are some things to consider if choosing juice:
Eat a whole piece of fruit instead.
Limit fruit juices to no more than half a glass per day.
Consider diluting juice 50:50 with water to reduce the amount of sugar
It is easy to drink too much juice. One popper of juice is equal in energy to two pieces of fruit.
