Solon Home Days Preview 38
This spring and summer promise to be busier than most for
the Solon Recreation Department, Solon Community Center,
Solon Center for the Arts and Grantwood Golf Course. That is,
of course, if they ever arrive. Mother Nature forgot to change
the seasons – or the Ground Hog erred in his prediction. Either
way, we need a little relief.
What this means for you is that we have a little more time
to plan for some of our major events we have coming for you this
year. As always, we have Solon Home Days, Fireworks on the
4th, (except this year we’ve added the Solon Philharmonic
Orchestra!), Summer Camps, Golf Outings, Arts Festivals, etc.
These events help cap off our beautiful summer in the park and
around town which can be so relaxing and enjoyable.
This is now my 33rd year serving Solon in the Recreation
Department, and each one brings new joys and challenges. I think
I speak for most in these departments when I say that it is a
pleasure to serve in Solon and we look forward every day to new
opportunities.
Please come out and enjoy the sunshine with us and we’ll make
every attempt to make your spring and summer memorable.
Sincerely,
Donald W. Holub
Director of Recreation

SOLON POLICE
DEPARTMENT
CITIZENS POLICE
ACADEMY
The Solon Police Department (SPD)
will be hosting its spring Citizens Police Academy beginning Tuesday, April 8,
2014. The length of the course is nine
weeks and are scheduled for Tuesday
evenings 6:30-9:30 pm. All classes (exclusive of Medical Examiner’s Office)
will be held in Solon. Applicants must
be 18 years of age by March 1, 2014
and must be a resident or business
owner/manager in the City of Solon.
Applicants are subject to a background
check and may be denied acceptance
into the academy based upon those
checks. There is no fee to attend.
The Citizens Police Academy program is designed to give participants
a working knowledge of the SPD. The
purpose of the academy is to increase
citizen awareness of the day-to-day
operation of the SPD by educating
them on topics relative to the role of a
police officer in the City. The academy
is not intended to make citizens into
police officers, but to allow citizens to
learn more about police operations.
During the sessions students will be
presented with information on various
aspects of police work as it relates
to our community. At the end of the
course, graduates will be permitted to
schedule a ride along with a patrol officer for one evening. Graduates of the
Citizens Police Academy will be eligible
for any future police related volunteer opportunities. To obtain further
information or to submit an application
please contact Sergeant Cabot
at (440) 337-1470 or email
[email protected]. The deadline
for applications is March 1, 2014.

Solon Center for the Arts Dance
Summer Dance Classes
SCA dance classes encourage creativity while emphasizing proper technique and terminology so that students become strong, knowledgeable, and passionate dancers. Each student will learn steps in a progressive manner that will allow them to focus on body placement,
timing, fluidity, musicality, and expression. SCA dance instructors teach with a nurturing and supportive attitude so that students are able
to learn in an environment conducive to growth and development.
Intro to Movement (Ages 3-4) This fun and exciting class was
designed to introduce young students to a form of self-expression
and imagination through movement! Students will improve basic
coordination and rhythm while learning to dance
Modern I (Ages 8-10), Modern II/III (Ages 11-14), Modern IV/V
(Ages 14-Adult) Dancers will learn the basics of modern dance,
focusing on technique, history and kinesiological terms while being
introduced to choreographic concepts and various repertories.
Creative Movement (Ages 4-6) Creative Movement introduces
children to the basics of ballet, tap, and creative forms of movement. Students will learn to express themselves through movement
as well as develop a sense of grace, coordination, and rhythm in a
focused and fun environment.
Lyrical/Contemporary I (Ages 10-14), Lyrical/Contemporary II (Ages 14-Adult) With shows like So You Think You Can
Dance, lyrical and contemporary styles have become more popular. This class will teach students how to express emotion while
dancing and learning to move in a fluid and melodic manner. This
class will explore the qualities of released dancing while daring
students to find disparate qualities of stillness and explosion.
Dance Combo I (Ages 5-7) Dance Combo II (Ages 7-9) If
you want to explore multiple styles of dance, Dance Combo is for
you! Students will learn basics of ballet, jazz, modern, tap, and basic
gymnastics. Students must have ballet shoes, tap shoes, and footless
or convertible tights. Jazz shoes are recommended.
Pre-Ballet/Jazz (Ages 5-8) This class fuses two important styles
of dance. Ballet forms the basis of dance technique and allows
students to grow into strong dancers. Jazz offers students the
opportunity to explore more rhythmic styles of movement. This
combined class gives students the opportunity to focus on both
techniques and style thereby becoming more well-rounded dancers.
Ballet I (Ages 8-10), Ballet II/III (Ages 10-14), Ballet IV/V (Ages
14-Adult) Dancers will gain a sense of self-discipline, confidence,
and poise as they explore work at the barre, center and across the
floor. Emphasis will be placed on proper alignment, terminology and
phrasing. As students progress, musicality, choreography, technique
and artistry will be stressed. Ballet II/III students will focus on perfecting the art of ballet, while bringing personality and fluidity to the
movement. Ballet IV/V is for advanced students.
Pointe (Ages 14-Adult) Once students have mastered proper
alignment, technique, and strength, pointe work will begin. Students
eligible for this class must be enrolled concurrently in at least one
upper level Ballet class at SCA.
Beginning Jazz/Hip Hop (Ages 5-10), Jazz/Hip Hop I (Ages
10-13), Jazz/Hip Hop II/III (Ages 14-Adult) Students will explore
classic and contemporary jazz techniques as well as popular hiphop. Isolations, rhythm, attitude and performance quality will be
emphasized.
Musical Theater (Ages 12-Adult) This class is designed for those
students wishing to improve their dancing skills for theater and
show choir. Students will study ballet and jazz technique as well as
movement for the stage.
31
Tap I/II (Ages 12-18) is a great form of dance for rhythm awareness, coordination and body control. All classes consist of a blend
of rhythm and Broadway tap being explored by center floor and
traveling work. Emphasis will be on correct terminology, technique
and timing. As students progress to higher levels of tap, they will
be introduced to more complex rhythms and combinations with
more of an emphasis on clarity of sounds.
Intro to Acro (Ages 6-10) provides students with the opportunity to learn basic acrobatic skills. Students will explore different
conditioning exercises which will increase their development of
coordination, flexibility, and strength.
Boys Dance (Ages 5-10) Male students will have an opportunity
to gain strength, flexibility and confidence while exploring jazz and
hip hop.
Leaps and Turns (Ages 12-Adult) This is a class designed specifically for the dancer who wishes to perfect and refine their skills of
turning, jumping, and leaping. These classes are taught with an emphasis on technique and correct body placement. They are taught
in a progressive manner beginning with the basics and advancing to
high level skills and combinations.
Power Hour (Ages 12-Adult) is a dance inspired workout where
you will gain flexibility and strength, build endurance and have a
great time, all in one hour! Please wear comfortable clothes.
