Introduction
Welcome to the latest edition of our monthly newsletter from the Business Improvement Team. This edition
features our ‘Apprentice of the month’, as well as an ongoing campaign to deliver the Supporting Teaching and
Learning Level 3 Apprenticeships from September 2012.
The College hosted an awareness event in May that was attended by over 50 members of staff from existing
schools across the borough, this was supported by the Rotherham Council’s Schools Effectiveness Service who
kindly circulated the information for the event.
All the schools that were involved, which ranged from Junior and Infants Schools to Senior Schools and
Academies, have been extremely supportive in working with their staff and their continuous professional
development. This is a great example of what can be achieved by following the apprenticeship pathway as a
career option.
As a college we provide a variety of support for employers that cover fully-funded apprenticeships to a range of
bespoke courses. I do hope that you find the article interesting as it highlights how the apprenticeship schemes
can support your business as well as staff development.

Well done to Katie Wood for being our latest Apprentice of the Month.
Not only has Katie, received this recognition but she has also secured herself a full-time position with
her employer on completion of her apprenticeship.
Katie is just finishing her NVQ Level 2 Apprenticeship in IT and has been acting as technical support
at Rotherham-based IT company, Pinnula.
Katie said: “I have always been interested in IT ever since turning on my
first computer and my apprenticeship has got me into the industry. I have
really enjoyed getting to know everyone here and I am really pleased they
have chosen to keep me as a full-time member of staff.”
Katie went down the apprenticeship route after deciding university
wasn’t for her and has excelled in her apprenticeship as Christine
Lant from Pinnula explained: “Katie has become such an important
member of our Support Team. She has learnt so much about our
products and our development processes and she discusses
problems and issues confidently with our customers.
“Her manner with both customers and staff is
professional she is always ready with a smile – even
when things get tough!”
Pinnula offers complete IT services, from management
consultancy to their own software products including
Uniplan, their integrated MRP package and Uplanit their
scheduler.
As part of her role at Pinnula, Katie has provided
technical help to customers actively problem solving
issues over the phone.
Katie was awarded with a certificate and Meadowhall vouchers.

The Job Shop and The Work Programme
As part of our services the College runs a Job Shop where we advertise vacancies to students for
part-time, temporary or permanent employment. It is completely free of charge to advertise your
vacancies and to ensure our students are job ready we will be offering employability skills training,
which means you will be employing exceptionally trained and well rounded individuals.
By advertising your vacancies with the College, you will be reaching over 12,000 educated and
eager students along with people from the local community who are aiming to get back into work. In
addition there are grants available to support recruitment through the apprenticeship route and we
would be happy to discuss this in greater detail.

Rotherham College is working with partner colleges
Calderdale and Barnsley to deliver Skills Support for
Redundancy and Workplace Learning Opportunities for
South Yorkshire and the Humber region.
Work Place Learning will promote ‘in work’
progression of employed individuals with low skills via
work-related skills training providing provision. This
will raise their level of attainment, enabling individuals
to improve their employment status and to move on to
undertake higher levels of training.
