Get out of the car, stand at the railing, and watch the majestic landscape get closer. The lake is sparkling, a few sailboats bobbing here and there, the cool breeze ruffles your hair and you feel yourself detaching from your routine. Driving around the County is an experience unto itself. You might pass by horses in pasture or have to slow down to let some free-range chickens (or a migrating turtle) cross the road. If you’ve got a photographer in the car, be prepared to make many stops to get that perfect shot of a rustic old barn, cedar rail fence or landscape vista especially in the fall colours. Walk, run or bike on the Millennium Trail – a former railway that’s been converted into a multipurpose trail. Enjoy a picnic lunch as you enjoy the view. You can learn about one of Ontario’s natural curiosities. Lake on the Mountain is 62 metres above Lake Ontario, yet is fed by a constant flow of clean, fresh water, with no apparent source. Early settlers believed the lake was bottomless. There are lots of winter-time activities to choose from! For cross-country skiiers, Sandbanks Provincial Park has 11 kms of trails. Pastoral vistas, local farmers, and significant landmarks have featured prominently in his recent work, but his interests don’t stop there; with a painter’s eye, Milé can find the beauty in the everyday, painting classic cars, architecture, and rendering the human figure in such a way that his subjects seem to glow from within. Milé enjoys painting in watercolour, oil, ink, and even wine. Now in its fifth year, the gallery at Small Pond Arts is located minutes from downtown Picton on an 87-acre art farm. You’re invited to explore Small Pond’s walking trails which feature an everevolving display of outdoor art installations. Countless visitors describe the experience as “magical” – come see for yourself! Small Pond Arts also hosts residencies for artists of all disciplines wishing to create new work, providing studio space, cozy rooms, and home-cooked meals. Open 10am to 6pm, April to November. Closed Tuesdays. WINE 53 W16 By Chadsey’s Cairns 17432 Loyalist Pkwy., Wellington | 613.399.2992 | www.bychadseyscairns.com Every wine has a story Theirs is a typical wine tale. It began with seduction. Richard, a former MPP—but not a farmer—had always loved vineyards. Luckily he planted his on a strand of ancient mineral-rich beach soil strewn with limestone rocks. His bemused wife Vida, really a psychotherapist, watched the vines grow, then began winemaking training in earnest. Committed to authentic 100% County wine, Vida and Richard consider themselves wine growers, always looking for new viticultural practices to push back the boundaries of their cool-climate wine region and bring the ripest, most flavourful grapes to the cellar door. Their wines are all classic fine varietals: oaked Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, Riesling and Gewürztraminer (often touched with noble rot), light-hearted Gamay Noir, and rarer wines such as Muscat, Chenin Blanc and St. Laurent. The rosés are dry and the sparklings are a striking vibrant red. County wine pioneers, they live on a 200-year-old glorious and storied farm overlooking Lake Ontario. The winery is named after an early settler, Ira Chadsey, who built stone cairns on the property to guide him home when he returned in the afterlife as a white horse. A charming apple house from the 1850s houses the tasting room. Visitors may picnic under the old maple trees, view the lake from an historic barn or stroll through the Chadsey pioneer cemetery. Opened 11am to 6pm daily, spring through fall. Call ahead for winter hours. Calendar of events 61 Great Boating The Great Waterway in South Eastern Ontario is a region rich in boating history encompassing the charming and historic towns of Cornwall, Brockville, Gananoque, Kingston and Belleville. Home of the world-famous 1000 Islands, St. Lawrence Seaway and Rideau Canal, the spectacular Great Waterway region is a boater’s paradise. www.thegreatwaterway.com/boating From the serene to the extreme, cruise, canoe, kayak or dive the waters that surround you. Laced together by the sparkling St. Lawrence River, Rideau Canal, Bay of Quinte and Lake Ontario, the Prince Edward County area is alive with pristine lakes and rivers. Go on an underwater scuba diving adventure! There are numerous shipwrecks from the late 1800’s & early 1900’s just off the coast. Just picture yourself navigating through the murky waters, you can just make out something up ahead. Slowly it comes into focus and you can see a wellpreserved shipwreck that the fish have made their home. If staying topside is more your style, why not charter a sailboat and spend the afternoon leisurely sailing around the 800 kilometres of beautiful Prince Edward County shoreline. Follow the Great Waterway to discover an abundance of water-based activities stretching from the Bay of Quinte along the St. Lawrence River through the 1000 Islands and up the Rideau Canal. During the summer months recreational boaters can navigate the original locks of The Rideau Canal, a UNESCO world heritage site that was built to connect the Ottawa River with Kingston when Ontario was known as Upper Canada. Canoeing and kayaking are a great way to explore the interior waterways. It’s peaceful, quiet and relaxing with only the sound of your oar slicing through the water. Boating in the County 63 & Links Marinas & Golfing 64 Docks MARINAS a well-conditioned course at reasonable rates? Lean back and stargaze for a bit – the sky is huge, so many stars twinkling and time seems to stand still. Off in the distance, you might hear a coyote howl. Or catch some tiny flickers of light along the treeline out of the corner of your eye – fireflies! Fall asleep to the sound of crickets and wake up to the sound of birds chirping outside your window. In the spring, meander with your morning coffee and score some sweet deals at the many yard sales in the County. Locals treat this almost as a sport!
