Pre-eminent freshwater research facility. Home to a successful Federal Buildings Initiative energy efficiency improvement project The 90-foot cylindrical tower was constructed of limestone. Along with the new stone lighthouse, a more modern method of keeping the light was adapted. This lighthouse was the first in Canada to use coal oil. A regal Tudor experience defined by a weathered parliamentarian finish with aged bricks, mortar & stone that appear decades old. 2 ½-storey frame house, Georgian style, shiplap siding, end-gabled roof, gabled portico – replica of original Brant House. Original building was built in 1917 by the City of Hamilton (Aldershot area was within Hamilton limits). It was built as an entertainment destination & included a beach area & a bathhouse on the shoreline & a dock. The building was destroyed by fire. In 1998 a comprehensive reconstruction was done to match the original design & the second floor was rebuilt as a multi-use hall/banquet facility. 1-storey, Edwardian BeauxArts style, slated hipped roof, Romanesque Revival-style round arches over windows, original glazed & paneled door 3-level glass pavilion, transparent glazed walls & roof, Living Wall ecosystem & air filter system, salvaged stone interior The Hendrie Gates commemorate William Hendrie, a successful business & horse breeder. Hendrie's family commissioned Frederick John Flatman to design & build a magnificent set of wrought iron gates, to be used in entrance marker to Hendrie. Crossroads is a 100,000 sq. ft., state-of-the-art, multipurpose Christian faith centre, with broadcast and administrative spaces, resource and training facilities, as well as amenities such as the Towne Square Café and beautifully landscaped Walk of Faith. This unique building features beautiful Victorian architecture. The Town Square is designed to replicate a Victorian streetscape. A 1 ½ storey common-bond brick structure in vernacular style. The hipped-roofed veranda has ornate spoolwork, trim, & turned posts, in excellent condition. Craftsman Style, with a transverse high gabled roof. The interior retains much of the original wood work, including pocket paneled doors & oak stairs with railing. A one-and-a-half-storey endgabled brick structure. A centre gable has intricate gingerbread bargeboard, an arched window with teardrop tracery, and a date stone. The chief architectural feature is the fine brick wall surrounding the 138-foot by 104-foot burying ground. There are also fine wrought iron gates at the front & side. A one-and-a-half-storey crossgabled brick structure with a T-plan and a large one-storey kitchen wing at the rear. The front wing was originally flanked by hipped-roof verandahs on each side. The west side verandah, shown in an old photograph, appears to have been screened. Built between 1905 and1907 by W. D. Flatt as a summer home, this Craftsman-style lakeside cottage has been exceptionally well-preserved by a single family for more than 80 years. The cottage is an outstanding example of Burlington's early years as a summer community and its subsequent development. The front gable The full front verandah (replacement) has a slightly sloped shed roof, with a plain cornice supported by tumed posts. The 2-storey stuccoed flatroofed structure is built in Art Deco Style, which is very rare in Burlington & Hamilton. Other Art Deco Style elements include the curved corner with grouped small sash windows & the recessing of the paired windows. The gable roof extends forward to become the roof of the partial verandah supported by a heavy cobblestone pillar. A massive cobblestone chimney breaks the front elevation. 11,000 square foot, 3-storey limestone structure. Classical influence is seen in the Tuscan columns on the east and south elevations and the scroll pediment above the west entrance. Classical features combine with aspects of avant-garde 1930s design in the asymmetry of four elevations, each with a distinct character. Although some maintenance has been deferred, the wood trim is all original.
