Forward cheque or money order payment with your mailing address to: CMHA, Box 286, Port Perry, ON L9L 1A3. Reproduction of any materials without written permission from the editor is prohibited. Opinions and statements expressed in this publication are not necessarily those of the editor or publisher Canada Post Customer Number 7108067 Mail Agreement Number 41953512 Editor’s Input A perfect picture is worth its weight in gold for marketing, and the annual foal pictorial is a wish list of beautiful babies helping market the Morgan breed. While I could not include every single photo, at least two have been included from each farm taking part this year, and I thank everyone for providing their babies to share for our reading enjoyment. There are some traffic-stoppers out there! The CMHA has diligently financed the magazine production over the years to ensure there is a lasting source of news and information to keep Morgan members abreast of breed happenings. Thanks to renewed advertiser participation, last year was the first time the magazine has finished the year in the black. After two huge issues at the beginning of this year, we are looking even better for 2014, and I thank everyone who has stepped on board to continue the support in this issue. Our marketing opportunities are expanded as we distribute this issue at the Grand National & World Championship Morgan show in October, giving foal owners some lovely extra exposure! As we approach the October 25 deadline for the year’s final issue, I encourage you to join in the marketing action and acknowledge your Morgan achievement this year with an ad. It’s a perfect time to thank buyers, to wish everyone the best for the New Year, and to showcase showring achievements. But I need your reservations by that October 25 deadline! One part of the magazine that is most affordable and most in need of your Morgan participation is the business card page. If you offer lessons, young horses for sale, have a stallion at stud, or offer other services such as trailering, boarding, or clincs, take a moment to contact me about placing a business card ad for the coming year. It is very affordable and keeps your contact information in an easy-to-spot place of each magazine issue. And you are ensuring the contined support of the magazine! This is the perfect way for you to dip your toe into the promotional waters at a national, and in the case of this issue, the international level for about the same cost as getting your Morgan’s toes trimmed. A worthy investment, and farriers are welcome to advertise too! And of course the annual stallion issue is right around the corner with a December 15 deadline to beat the holiday crunch. Make a note on your calendar now. And if you are reading this from south of the Candian border, remember that U.S. stallions are always a welcome and anticipated part of this issue! The best of luck to our Grand National-bound exhibitors, for a safe and uneventful trip there and back, and for flawless passes on the rail. Look for highlights in that November & December issue! To everyone else, enjoy changing gears with this very cool fall weather and digging in for another Weather Channel winter. My furnace is already on, telling me it promises to be an eventful one! Lisa Peterson, Editor Check out our website for a current list of horses for sale. [email protected] www.miamarmorgans.ca (306)893-2486 Maidstone, SK Canadian Morgan 5 Administrator’s Missive President’s Message It’s that time of year! The show season draws to a close and we are working on our projects to prepare for the winter once again. As I have mentioned before, there are no words to express everyone’s gratitude to the volunteers that work endless hours in order for our local clubs and zones to host events for each and every one of us to enjoy. A huge thank you to each of you! Many of you have received numerous requests from different organizations to “opt in” to continue to receive electronic correspondence from them. This is because as of July 1, 2014 a new Anti-Spam Law has come into force in Canada. The CMHA understands there is an “implied consent” for the CMHA to continue to correspond electronically with any of its members and anyone who was a member within the past two years. On another note, the CMHA has been dealing with a few registry issues. The Canadian Livestock Records Corporation (CLRC) provides a complete line of registry services for the CMHA. The CMHA does not perform registry services. I realize when we are purchasing our new Morgan, we are excited and may not remember to “dot the i’s or cross the t’s,” BUT, it is a “Buyer Beware” market out there and unfortunately, the CMHA is not in a position for force someone’s hand to resolve civil cases. The CMHA can, however, strongly encourage both sides to work toward a peaceful resolution in every case. In closing, I would like to express our condolences to the Karen Abel family. Karen was an avid supporter for the breed and I certainly miss her candid remarks during the conference calls. For all you have done for the Morgan breed provincially, nationally, and internationally, I say “Thank you Karen!” Melissa MacKenzie President There is an exciting new contest that is being offered by the CMHA and this should appeal to everyone who enjoys videoing their beautiful Morgan horses. The CMHA Promotion Chairperson Dianne Brown is spearheading this contest, thank you Dianne for this great idea. Rules are available on the website and were printed in the last issue of the magazine but just contact me if you would like a form/ rules sent to you. Called “Share The Passion,” we are hoping to raise more awareness to our breed and have some fun at the same time. This contest is open to CMHA members; youth, adults or Affiliate Clubs. Winning videos will be showcased on the CMHA website. Video submissions will feature the versatility of the Morgan horse and the individual’s or Affiliate Club’s particular passion for the Morgan horse. CMHA’s tag line, “Share the Passion “will be the underlying theme of the video. Start collecting your ideas, photos, and video clips now. Deadline for applications is 5:00 pm PST Friday, January 30, 2015. This is your opportunity to showcase to Canada and the world your perspective on “Sharing the Passion” for Canada’s Morgan horse. As the end of August draws near, most foals will have been born; congratulations to all on your healthy arrivals! And don’t forget about your paperwork; the more time passes, the harder it is to remember all the details. I have included some statistics for all to digest and while I am not advocating breeding just “because you have a mare,” I am advocating that serious breeders need to register their animals; this is your legacy and the integrity of the registry depends on you. As of the end of July, we have registered 119 Morgans and six Part-Morgans. Let’s all strive to make 2014 a better year for the registry and send in those registrations and transfers! New CLRC General Manager Dan Stephenson, Chair of the Board of Directors for the Canadian Livestock Records Corporation (CLRC), is pleased to announce the appointment of Jim Washer as General Manager, effective September 15, 2014. “Recognized as an accomplished leader, Jim brings over 25 years of experience in program development, team leadership and stakeholder engagement to CLRC”, stated Dan Stephenson. “On behalf of my Board colleagues, I would like to congratulate and welcome Jim as the new General Manager.” Jim brings to CLRC a vast experience in community development, program management, Board leadership, budget administration, as well as stakeholder partnerships. “I look forward to building relationships with existing and new partners in the preservation and recording of livestock” stated Jim Washer. “This position provides the opportunity to lead CLRC from its recent centennial anniversary into an exciting future.” Jim began his 25 year career path working in the community non-profit sector with Boys and Girls Clubs in both Montreal and Ottawa. Having held the positions of Adolescent Coordinator, Program Manager and Executive Director; Jim also sat on local boards and the Regional Council for Boys and Girls Clubs of Quebec. Continuing in youth and community work, Jim joined the Canadian 4-H Council as National Program Manager. Responsible for national and international conferences, educational youth exchanges, and the agricultural grants and scholarship programs; Jim was instrumental in supporting youth in the development of agricultural practices. From there Jim accepted a position as Senior Manager, Programs and Partnerships with SEVEC where he led a reorganization of the programs and processes that support over 6,000 youth to travel annually on educational exchanges. Jim completed a B.ED in Education from McGill University, Management Training with Boys and Girls Clubs, and certification in Project Management from Algonquin College. During his studies at McGill, Jim was co-president of the Phys. Ed student association and participated in an international study exchange to the U.K. AMHA TO ACQUIRE NMMH SHELBURNE, VT—Through a series of transactions between the American Morgan Horse Association (AMHA), American Morgan Horse Institute (AMHI), and American Morgan Horse Educational Charitable Trust (AMHECT), the AMHA will acquire and operate the National Museum of the Morgan Horse (NMMH) effective August 1, 2014. AMHA Board President Jeff Gove stated, “We are pleased to continue the legacy of the Museum under the AMHA banner. This is a unique opportunity for ‘all things Morgan’ both past and present to come together.” AMHA Executive Director Julie Broadway added, “The NMMH is the guardian of the Morgan’s rich history and we are honored to have them become part of the AMHA family and the opportunity to work with Middlebury College in preserving that history. We see this as a strategic business move to more closely align and integrate all facets of the Morgan community under one umbrella.” Gove added, “We applaud AMHI for their stewardship of the Museum these past 30-plus years and will endeavor to build on their work. Many thanks to all the Trustees for their leadership.” The NMMH, located in Middlebury, Vermont, is dedicated to preserving and interpreting all aspects of the Morgan horse breed through educational programs, exhibits, and special events. The Museum has an exhibit space that displays quarterly rotating exhibits focusing on the history of the breed. The Museum also maintains its archives at the Middlebury College library, which is open to researchers. No operational changes for the Museum are planned at this time, and the Museum will remain in Middlebury under the direction of Helen Herold, who will report to Broadway. The museum will continue to be funded by donations, grants, retail sales, fundraising events and interest accrued from its endowment. Reading from the U.S.? My name is Melanie Thomas, I am 15 years old, and was born and raised in Bowmanville, Ontario. I am entering grade 11 at St. Stephens Catholic Secondary School. We are a family of four and the proud owners of a 15-year-old Morgan mare named Mystic. Horses, especially Morgans, have always been a big part of my life ever since I took that first lesson as a seven-year old at Trillium Equine Complex in Orono. My weekly, then bi-weekly lessons with Cathy Sampson quickly became the highlight of my week. We had just started showing at some small fairs and home shows at Trillium up until 2009, when our whole family moved to Zurich, Switzerland for my dad’s work. I continued to ride there and learned a lot from my instructor, Fritz Jseli and his horses Tessa (a beautiful Swiss Warmblood) and Ronja (a feisty pony). Three years later, it was great to return to my home barn in Canada and the Morgans I love. I continued my riding lessons at Trillium, enjoying every moment of it. Together, Cathy and Bob Sampson transformed my life and taught me everything I know about the Morgan horse. I have learned so much from the Sampsons and will always be grateful. Not only have I had ongoing support from them, but also from my family. I am lucky enough to have my family be there for me and support me through my journey with horses. My dad even drives Morgans now and is looking forward to his first show next summer! A year ago, my family and I decided it was time to take the plunge and finally purchase our first Morgan horse. Startrend Mystic Visions is your typical Morgan horse; which is anything but ordinary. She is beautiful, versatile, and has the most winning personality. Mystic is everything I ever wanted in a horse. She loves children, 8 September/October 2014 which makes her a big hit with my little brother Nathan. She has such a fun personality, but always knows when she needs to be gentle towards children. Mystic always manages to put a smile on my face, no matter my mood before entering the barn. After a tough day at school, I can always count on her to positively change my mood. My Morgan means everything to me, and I know she will always be there for me when I need her most. Throughout the long winter, Mystic and I got to know each other and prepared for the upcoming show season. Our first show was a success. Even though we didn’t earn many ribbons, I learned more and more about my horse, and was proud of our performance. More shows passed, and Mystic and I were becoming a better team, we knew each other better. I was very happy with our results at shows, and proud of how far we had come. Recently, we attended the 2014 Ontario Morgan and Saddlebred Classic. This was my first two-day show with Mystic. We were in some classes against tough competition and were pleasantly surprised with a third against the adults and we even won the Hunter Hack class! The show was a success and I was once again proud of our performance. The atmosphere at the Classic was amazing! It was of course a little stressful, but it really helped to have so many encouraging and helpful people there. I’m grateful for the new friends that were made, and also to meet up again with friends from last year. Even though I was competing against amazing riders like Ashley Reeson, Emily Miller, Rebekah Shield and Mackenzie Collins, they were always kind and encouraging. My close friend Lucy Nesbitt was also there for me the whole weekend which really helped with my nerves. Although not a competitor, she is an amazing rider and was there to help the Trillium family too. We were all grateful for her help. Thanks so much for letting me share about my life with Morgans! Brady Groot Hi, my name is Brady Groot. I am nineyear old and am in fourth grade in St. Augustine Catholic School in Alberta. I am on the cross-country running team and also the track and field team. My favourite subject is science. I like to show and do trail rides. Last month we went to the mountains riding again, it’s really fun to ride across the rivers! I started in the walk/trot division when I was seven years old and rode AMS Lasting Impression. He was a good boy for me and I won lots of yellow and green ribbons! Yellow is my favourite colour. Last year I started riding Tazara Windigo. He has much more energy than “Freddie” had. “Damien” made me work much harder, which improved my riding a lot. I started winning thirds and seconds and even got a first! This spring I got to have some lessons with Jessica Cavanaugh and had lots of fun and she helped to teach me to canter better. I have been practicing to get better this summer, some days Damien canters better than others! This year I have had a really good time in the shows. At the last show I won five firsts, two thirds, and my first championship! It was so fun! Introducing... Both geldings came back to battle it out in the championship. It was Alphastar First Asset coming away with the championship and Rendition Feast Your Eyes winning the Reserve Championship. It was great to see some growth in the stallion division. The 2 & under class welcomed three quality entries to the ring. Taking top spot was Sherri & Deanna Wilson’s gorgeous stallion, The Last Viking. Viking was handled to this victory by Josh Piatt of Champion Hill. It was so great to have Champion Hill join us from the other side to the border. Hopefully they will be back to join us next year! Second in the class was Brenda Casteel’s super handsome youngster, Millenium Ultra Hot. It is very exciting to see what this young man will grow up to be! Rounding out this nice class was Anita Jackson’s colt Baronial Mr. Charisma, it was so wonderful to see Anita and her daughter Stacy back at the Classic. This long time breeder and exhibitor was a very welcome addition to the show and we sure hope we see them back in the years to come – they have some really nice youngsters that need to be shown off. In the 5 & over division Sherri and Deana Wilson’s new stallion brought the crowd to the rail. Harlan’s Azurean, shown by Josh Piatt, is big, bold and impressive. This show-stopper of a stallion is standing at Champion Hill farm, hopefully we will see some of his babies at the show in years to come. Three stallions came back for the championship. It was the park stallion Harlan’s Azurean who trotted away with the championship. The Last Viking made it a clean sweep for the Wilsons in the stallion division, winning the reserve champion title. Nancy Kavanagh and her eye-catching gelding Cyan Star Trinity put together a nice class to go home as reserve champions. Hunter Pleasure As has been the trend over the past several years, the hunter division was the most popular for entries. We started off with our novice horses and it was Ashley Reeson and her longtime partner Northline Enterprise taking the victory pass. This duo have been out of the ring for a while but came back with tremendous success. Second place went to PCC Don’t Stop Believin’ and Gabrielle Sandel of New York. This lovely pair shows under the Champion Hill banner. The 5 and over class saw six very nice entries, it was Chris Monteith’s always reliable and handsome Brogin Kiri coming out on top. Second place went to Northline Enterprise. The ladies didn’t disappoint, Lisa Kavanagh had a nice ride on Allison Short’s big black gelding Samor’s Black Jack for the win, Northline Enterprise took another nice second. In the limit horse class PCC Don’t Stop Believin’ won with HD Troy filling in the second hole. Troy is really coming into his own this season and just seems to get better with every class, he is owned by Heather and Axel Starck and shown by Patti Hoskin. The championship was a great class to watch, once again coming out on top was Chris Monteith and Brogin Kiri, in reserve was Samor’s Black Jack and Lisa Kavanagh. The hunter youth then took their turn in the ring. In the qualifier we saw the dynamic duo of Mackenzie Collins and Attn Postmaster take top honours. Second went to Melanie Thomas’ great new mare Startrend Mystic Vision; these two really seem to be coming together as a great new team. The championship once again saw Mackenzie and Attn Postmaster taking the victory pass. Reserve went to the entry from across the border PCC Don’t Stop Believin’ and Gabrielle Sandel. Park Saddle It was so fun to see the park division back at the classic! Although there was only one entry, he certainly was a great one! Winning both the qualifier and the championship was Sherri and Deana Wilson’s stallion Harlan’s Azurean. This outstanding stallion was shown by Josh Piatt of Champion Hill Farm. Hopefully we will see the exciting stallion showing back in Canada soon! Miscellaneous Next we welcomed the future into the ring with our leadline riders. For walk- trot leadline class we saw two entries, Annika Copeland and Lilly both had giant smiles on their faces as they took on the always difficult trot. Great work ladies! Speaking of the little ones, we can’t go without mentioning the largest class of the show – the stick horse class with 15 entries! High Points were handed out for the Hunter Hack division and the Youth. The hunter hack champion was Laurel Gould’s lovely new mare UVM Pumpkin, showing duties were split between Laurel and Lesley Vivian. Reserve went to Brenda Casteel’s SN Center of Attention who was shown by Emily Miller. The Morgan Youth High Point Champion was Mackenzie Collins and Reserve was Rebekah Shield. Another new class this year was the Double Jeopardy class, where two riders of the same seat team up. They ride the first way of the ring on one horse and before they change direction they switch horses with their partners. The placings are It was an intense line-up in the Stick Horse class! based 14 September/October 2014 on who gets the best performance from two different horses. Second place went to Greg’s partner Nancy Kavanagh who also had lovely rides on these western pleasure horses. Third and fourth went to the saddle seat horses, Laura O’Reilly earned bragging rights by placing ahead of her daughter (on Brynn’s horses). Once again the Classic was a great show, put on by great people! A huge thank you needs to go out to everyone who works year-round preparing for this show. Also, a big thank you to all of the exhibitors who come out and support the show. If there is anyone out there who wants to come and start showing, there really is something for everyone. Feel welcome to contact an OMHC member, there are many of us who would be more than happy to help you get started! It will be exciting to see how this show continues to evolve for next year! The weather was sunny but not hot, which made for perfect temperatures for both the horses and riders! Our judge for this year was Harold Angell from Nevada. The show committee consisted of Leann Dixon, Shari Groot, Del Burns and Bea Dixon. Although it is a lot of work putting a show together, it was very successful and we are looking forward to next year. The show started out with the dressage and trail divisions running concurrently, and both were well-filled. The trail champion was Willa Schwab riding Annie Get Your Gun followed in reserve by Kathy Hawkins aboard DVF Seacrest Out. Because our walk/trot/jog age group is so large, our show also includes a walk/trot/ jog trail class to introduce young riders to the division. This class was won by Brady Groot riding Tazara Windigo. The Dressage arena was visited with 15 patterns judged and many very nice tests were performed. The weanling futurity brings out the best from our breeders, and this year’s Vern Baron with his filly Canabar Jubilation. winners were Morgan Hill Stompin’ Tom sired by SYP High Definition for the Comeau family, with The Delightful Rose sired by The Ignitor in reserve for the Groots. In yearlings there was Gold Dipped Diamonds taking the tri-color for Dakota Ferrence, and in reserve was Morgan Hill Coup de Ville for the Comeau’s second win. The two-year old winner was Center of Attention for Kayshia Langille. The in-hand champions began with mares. Tamrac’s Renne de Soleil took the tri-color, while reserve was Unconditional. For the geldings it was BMF Secret Code taking the title and Bred to Boogie for reserve. The stallion champion was Morgan Hill Stompin’ Tom. The very strong western pleaThe U.S. flag was presented by Caylyn Walker sure division was well attended on Cold Creek Cash and the Canadian flag by as usual. The youth championship was taken by Courtney Pack aboard BMF Mastermind, with Catriona Kozijn riding Boxford Twist and Shout for the reserve. Catriona continued to build on her achievements by claiming our 2014 Open Western Pleasure Champion with Boxford Twist and Shout. Reserve was DTA Aces Wild owned by Tracy Nakonechny and shown by Stephanie Abel. Our competitive hunter division proved to be very well-attended with deep entries. Amateur was taken by Tamrac’s Enzo owned by Emilie Wendland and Reserve went to TamRac’s Maximum Velocity owned by Brenda Wangert. The junior exhibitor championship was a big, talentloaded class with BMF Giada and Aidan Lorenson coming out with the red and in Reserve came SGP Grand Illusion with Foekje Baarda in the saddle. The open hunter champions were KSG Walz After Midnight with owner Hannah Krewusik in the saddle, and taking home the reserve was TamRac’s Renne de Soleil owned and ridden by Jordan Reid. The English pleasure division was strong and well-filled. The amateur champion was DU Absolutely Courageous with Leann Dixon up. The youth championship was earned by VVM Well Deserved with Jessa Dumkee riding, while Whitemud Blue Diamond and rider Courtney Pack took home reserve. Completing this division with the Championship was Harlington’s Indira owned by Shirley Hunter and presented by Sonja Lorenson, the reserve winner was Whitemud Blue Diamond ridden by Megan Pack for owner Lorelei Friedrick. In the classic pleasure division the junior exhibitor champions were Saralins Conductor with Georgina Sanche up, and the reserve went to Morgan Hill Monster Mash with rider Skye Davies. The Classic Champion was awarded to FCF Fandango Canadian Morgan 17 and Robyn Davies at the reins, with the reserve going to Saralins Conductor ridden by Georgina Sanche. It was a refreshing sight to see a fantastic increase in the driving division! This year’s champion was BMF Treat Me Gently with owner Harvey Sawatzky as whip. In the reserve position was KLN Final Destiny with Lorelei Friedrick. In the open Morgan Pleasure Driving Championship, Harold Angell gave the championship to VVM Well Deserved and driver Christa Dumkee and the reserve to FRF Swept Away with Cathy Gillen navigating for owner Hailey Wickens. The equitation division was extremely competitive as it always is. The winners included Catriona Kozijn, Jordan Reid, Amy Taskinen, Taylor Lunny, Georgina Sanche, Kaija Meetsma, and Robyn Davies. This was a large division with 13 competitors. The Walk/Trot/Jog classes are well filled with 15 eager participants as well. The winners were Brady Groot, Hailey Wickens, Maya Beakhouse, Bentlee Kublik, and Wasimaye Sana. Linda Milne Victory Passes in Vancouver New life is being breathed into the Vancouver Charity Horse show, and plans are underway to draw Morgan enthusiasts in for the July 22-25 show in 2015. The Vancouver Charity Horse Show is an annual four-day show, bringing together spectators, exhibitors, vendors and investors to one location, in Vancouver, British Columbia at historic Hastings Park. All proceeds from the show go directly to The Richmond Therapeutic Equestrian Society. The mission of the show is to generate growth and interest in the Breed Sport Industry whilst giving back to equine-related charities that enrich our community. Morgans are at the forefront of the show, and when asked why, Director Peter Morrison offered this explanation: “I was very fortunate to have had the opportunity to show Morgans as a junior rider, specifically for Ms. Chloe Miller who allowed me to show her mare Dame Dolce at New England and Granite State so many years ago. At that time as well, I had the wonderful opportunity to ride under Cindy Mugnier’s tutelage at Fox Meadow Farm in Granby, Massachusetts. My love of Morgan horses has never left me, and when I moved to BC, I was dismayed to find out the once vibrant Morgan industry here had almost disappeared, with Morgan owners forced to travel hundreds of miles to show their horses. I knew this had to change.” With breeding and horse show numbers becoming alarmingly low, the current directors came together realizing something had to be done. They all agreed that horse shows are a key marketing and sales opportunity, and where better than to attract new clients and showcase Morgans than in the city itself. The directors also realized that no one breed could take on this undertaking alone; horse shows today are all about numbers and being able to break even. Horse shows need to be about enjoyment, and most importantly inclusion. The Vancouver Charity Horse Show is dedicated to the promotion of Morgans, Saddlebreds, Arabians, Friesians, and Hackney Ponies, but it equally promotes open classes of which all breeds are most welcome to be a part. The show aims to welcome owners, trainers, and breeders from throughout North America. With daily parties for participants, a trade show for vendors, activities for spectators, and a wonderful class selection, all set in one of the world’s most beautiful cities, it aims to become a destination show for exhibitors and spectators alike. Canadian Morgan 21 Morgan Specific Finishing In Front It is the first sight we see when our Morgans enter the show ring; the highstepping legs, brilliant eyes in an expressive face and the proud arched neck with flowing mane. It is the forehand. Like the other parts of the Morgan’s body we have discussed, this area needs to be strengthened and developed to perform at its fullest potential. All Morgans have a natural head carriage, and this is helpful because of structure and build as Catherine Sampson of the Trillium Equine Complex says. She acknowledges being long-necked or short necked doesn’t matter, it is how the head is attached that is important. “I learned a long time ago just because we think a horse has a certain look, it should be fashioned and shaped to a particular discipline such as a hunter, western pleasure horse or saddle seat horse,” Sampson says. She warns this may not be the right choice. There are many factors besides just conformation that contribute to a Morgan’s performance, such as personality and temperament. By forcing what is believed to be a good headset, the Morgan’s “comfort level” can be compromised. Her view on head set is that it is nothing more than finding a Morgan’s natural head carriage. Wendy Inch of Sunny Acres Morgan Horse Farm has a similar opinion. She says a head carriage should be a byproduct of a Morgan properly trained to use their hind end and “work over their back.” This means the Morgan carries its head naturally after accepting contact through the bit to the hands. Inch agrees head carriage shouldn’t be forced into a position with equipment, but through acceptance of aids and training. She suggest watching how horses move in the pasture, naturally and freely, and watch the joint movements, gaits, and head carriage. This field watching could give an idea of what discipline a Morgan would do the best in, 22 September/October 2014 though it doesn’t mean training won’t help the Morgan excel in other areas. As well, temperament (as mentioned before) can help determine what the Morgan would be happiest doing. It seems to be common knowledge not all Morgans are created equal. This is especially true when training and should be considered for optimum success. Inch suggests creating a series of exercises to strengthen weak areas and improve flexibility, helping the Morgan truly enjoy its work. “The goal of training any horse is to improve what they already have,” Inch says, “Not every individual is a World Champion, but with patient and progressive training, one can bring the best out in them and develop their musculature, improving their performance and making them a winner in their own way.” So how does one encourage a head set? Head carriage takes time and patience. “There are no short cuts,” says Inch. You need to create a flexible frame (accepting of aids and soft in the hands) by activating the hindquarters (part 1), stretching over the back (part 2), and establishing softness through the body. Inch develops individual training programs to address each Morgan’s specific issues. She finds the best bit of starting a young Morgan, or retraining an older or soured horse, is a Myler Comfort Snaffle (MB-02 or 04). She says this bit is easy on the mouth and gives a decent level of tongue relief. Sampson agrees. “If the horse is not properly prepared and collected by its rider, it can’t be expected to understand or even find the right zone of head carriage.” Sampson prefers the use of elastic side reins in training as the elastics give once the horse relaxes; as a reward. Her training sessions build over a long period of time so the Morgan can stretch and the horse, itself, is willing. She starts out with a relaxed rein or over-check, then shortens them gradually over time until the Morgan is accepting of the new position. During by Heather Dilts-Baiano cool down at the end of a session, Sampson also loosens the reins so the horse can stretch through the neck and back. Now comes the mention of draw reins, since they are often used by many trainers and backyard riders to promote a desired head set. They should be used sparingly, Sampson says, and she includes a warning. A constant use of draw reins can be likened to punishment if not used correctly. Too many use this training device to force a head position. “Think of it this way,” Sampson says. “Tuck your chin in as far as you can without dropping your head and hold it for 60 seconds, then release. You will soon find that you neck and shoulders are sore and you are in pain. There is no release. Now hold that thought and try tucking your chin in for 10 seconds and then relax.” She goes on to say to gradually increase the amount of time to hold one’s chin for a full 60 seconds, and when you can hold the whole time you will have stretched the muscles and conditioned yourself (properly). Your Morgan is the same, it needs to stretch and relax its poll as it develops muscles to support the ideal head carriage. Some common problems that can arise during the training process include getting behind the bit, leaning on the bit, and over flexing. Both Inch and Sampson acknowledge these issues come from how the Morgan has been trained, than on conformation, being a way of resisting and avoiding pain. Inch notices that when a horse is behind the bit, it often has the issue of leaning on the rider’s hands. Many horses that have one problem actually have both. The Morgan has been ridden more on its forehand than from the hindquarters, or the rider’s hands have been too heavy. The Morgan did not learn, or developed the muscles, to carry itself and does not accept the aids. Naturally, horses want to move forward. So, through this article and the previous two in earlier issues, we have discussed the importance of developing the hindquarters (the engine), the back (the drive train), and now the forehand of our show and pleasure Morgans. By strengthening and working on all of those parts, we are developing a well-trained equine athlete. We should pay the same attention to ourselves, as keeping in top condition will only aid our four-legged partner to achieve success. After all, how can we expect our Morgan to perform at its best if we are not performing at ours? As Sampson says, “Pull your tummy in, stand tall and don’t forget to breathe. That is how your horse should be: balanced, relaxed and strong.” May you have new and continued success with your Morgan for the rest of the year!
