Report of the Volunteer Chair and CEO
Thank you.
These are the two most important words we can say to you, our donors. Though you may not
have had a reason to visit our hospital during the past year, be assured that your support of the
Royal University Hospital Foundation has made a vital difference.
As you read through our Annual Report, we hope that you—the generous donors, volunteers
and stakeholders of the RUH Foundation—will see how essential your ongoing support has
been through the year. Since our inception in 1983, your Foundation has raised and invested
more than $77.6 million of donor funds through three pillars of excellence at RUH: ground
breaking research, specialized training and advanced patient care. The 2010-2011 Annual
Report reflects our ongoing commitment to fund initiatives not traditionally or fully supported
by government operating dollars, directly enhancing the patient care experience, supporting
knowledge expansion through education and training, and advancing medical research that
improves treatment practices.

You will read about grateful patients as well as staff and physician champions who believed in and personally supported our
Royal Vital Care Campaign for the purchase of the newest technology and state-of-the-art vital sign monitors for our patients.
We would not be able to tell these stories without your support and passion for our hospital and our Foundation.
Thanks to the generosity of so many, RUH Foundation raised $7,023,534 in 2010-2011 through donations, endowment
gifts, events, gaming and investment income. Our Board of Directors approved grants of $4,082,437 including $324,769
for research, $295,937 for education and training, and $3,461,731 for patient care and capital projects. As well, the
Foundation paid $1,560,255 that had been committed to the Saskatoon Health Region in 2008-2009 for capital projects
such as the Irene and Leslie Dubé Centre for Mental Health.
If you’ve ever wondered if your gift to the RUH Foundation really makes a difference, we know you will find proof
positive in the stories told on the following pages. Thank you!

A Message from the Saskatoon Health Region
The Saskatoon Health Region greatly values the leadership and support provided by the Royal University
Hospital Foundation. Through the efforts of the Foundation and the generosity of its donors, the Region
continues to enhance patient care, teaching and research and to make progress on achieving the Region’s
vision of healthiest people, healthiest communities, exceptional service.
Maura Davies
President and CEO,
Saskatoon Health
Region
The Royal Vital Care Campaign is a wonderful example of how the Foundation is helping us improve the
quality of care. One of the Region’s highest priorities is to enhance the safety of our care. State-of-the-art vital
sign monitors funded by donors to the Foundation enable nurses, physicians and other health professionals
to monitor the condition of some of our sickest patients and ensure they receive the care they need, when
they need it. For these patients, seconds can be literally a matter of life and death. Having clinical information
readily at hand is extremely important. The monitors also help improve communications among care providers,
so all members of the care team have immediate access to the same critical information they need to make
important care decisions.
Thanks to an estate gift from a donor, the RUH Foundation was able to commit $1 million in funding
to support development of a new Pharmacy at RUH, helping us to build a larger, safer environment
for the preparation and administration of medications. With funding from the Foundation and
government, we will design a department in which we can improve medication safety and
provide a safer workplace for our dedicated health professionals.
The Royal University Hospital Foundation works as a true partner with the
Region. Support for professional development of staff and promotion
of research are also important aspects of this partnership. Together
we will continue to put “Patients First” and ensure that the Royal
University Hospital plays an exemplary role in serving the people of
Saskatchewan.

A Grateful Patient Gives Back to Royal University Hospital
For six weeks, Bill Cey lay in a
coma in the Intensive Care Unit
at Royal University Hospital,
surrounded daily by his children
and his wife, Ethel. Their
lifeline—the only proof that Bill
was still alive—was the digital
“face” of the vital sign monitor
tracking his critical signs of life.
Launched in 2009, the Royal
Vital Care Campaign raised
funds for 96 state-of-the-art vital
sign monitors and centralized
monitoring systems for the critical
care units at RUH. Thanks to

ultimate benefit of patients and their families at RUH.
On his most recent visit, Bill presented a cheque from his family
(he and Ethel raised 18 children) to the Royal University Hospital
Foundation’s Royal Vital Care Campaign to show their appreciation for
the care he received from the physicians, nurses and staff in ICU.
In April, the Board of Directors of Royal University Hospital Foundation
committed $2.5 million from the Royal Vital Care Campaign to the
Saskatoon Health Region for the purchase of priority vital sign
monitors.
“We are so grateful,” says Bill’s son Lester, “and that
gratitude is ongoing. It doesn’t end now that Dad’s
better. It is eternal.”
“No family wants to spend time in ICU, but when they do, they’ll have
peace of mind knowing that care includes the best in monitoring
technology,” says Arnie Arnott, Volunteer Chair of the RUH Foundation.
“That’s the legacy of the Royal Vital Care Campaign.”

A gift of stock pays dividends
Ken Stephenson didn’t inherit money, he didn’t engage in get-rich-quick-schemes and he didn’t win
a lottery. But through a lifetime of dedicated employment, careful saving and thoughtful financial
advice, he’s earned enough “extra” to make philanthropy a cornerstone of his good fortune.
In December, Stephenson made a substantial gift of stocks to the Royal University Hospital
Foundation in support of the Royal Vital Care Campaign.
“It was of no benefit to me because I didn’t need it,” says Stephenson. “The Lord has been
good to me and my investments have been good to me. I’ve been blessed in life.”
Stephenson grew up on a farm near Unity during the Great Depression, earned two university
degrees and landed a position with the Great American Insurance Company selling hail
insurance to farmers, from which he retired in 1987. He and his wife, Elsie, who passed away
three years ago, raised two children. He’s now a great grandpa. His passion (inherited from his
mother, a pianist, and father, a trained vocalist) is singing—Stephenson is a founding member
of the Saskatoon Chimo Chordsmen and the Voice Male Barbershop Quartet.
His first investment was a $100 Canada Savings Bond, but he soon learned the value of
buying stocks and reinvesting the dividends, a philosophy supported by legendary investor
Warren Buffett, a man Stephenson greatly admires. Like Buffet, Stephenson has a strong
philosophy of giving back. He and Elsie supported many charities over the years, including
the RUH Foundation.
“I’d like to spread the word that if I can do this, then perhaps
others might think, ‘I can do this, too,’ ’’ says Stephenson. “A small
contribution adds up over time.”
Stephenson made the gift of stocks because, with the increase in value over the years, he (or
his heirs) stood to pay a hefty capital gains tax. Now, he’ll get a charitable tax credit instead. He
also has the benefit of knowing his investments are paying dividends every day for patients and
their families at RUH.

of the RUH Foundation Board of Directors and Chair of the
Foundation’s Development Committee.
Physicians Give from the Heart
Dr. Susan Shaw has two families—her “home” family and her RUH family. The welfare of both is of critical
importance to this busy physician and mother of two. That’s why she supported the Royal Vital Care
Campaign with her time and a financial contribution.
“I see the hospital as part of my family,” says Shaw, a Critical Care physician.
“I believe in giving back to that family. It’s my way of saying ‘Thank You’ for
everything you do.”
As Head of Adult Critical Care at RUH, Shaw is reminded every day of the importance of the new vital
sign monitors for assessing, diagnosing and treating the most critically ill and injured patients who come
through our doors. The old monitors, purchased in the 1980s, lacked many of the computerized functions
so essential to modern patient care.
“These new monitors provide a huge amount of data which we analyze in order to determine our
course of action. That helps us do a better job at the bedside,” says Shaw. “The Royal Vital Care
Campaign reinforces how much we value our staff and want to give them the tools to provide the
best care they can.”
Shaw is among the dedicated “physician family” at RUH who contributed to the success of
the Royal Vital Care Campaign. These physicians know the value of allocating a portion of their
charitable giving to their hospital for the good of their patients and the staff who care for them.
They see the positive results every day on the job.
“As a physician at RUH, I was proud and honoured to support this initiative,” says Dr. Anita
Chakravarti, a member of the RUH Foundation Board of Directors who served as Physician
Champion for the campaign. “Physician support shows the RUH ‘family’ and the community at
large how important these monitors really are to the job that we do.”

Supporting Nurses at the Bedside
Registered Nurse David Maier was frustrated with the out-of-date vital sign monitors in the Intensive Care Unit at
RUH, so he did something about it. Despite his busy work schedule and home life, (he’d just become a new dad!),
Maier volunteered to serve as one of the Staff Champions of the Royal Vital Care Campaign to help raise funds for
new vital sign monitors at RUH.
“I was frustrated with the old equipment and said so, many times,” says Maier. “Rather than just talking about it, I
decided to do something.”
Maier knew the old equipment inside out—literally. He was often called upon to fix a malfunctioning monitor,
sometimes using parts from one monitor to repair another. He was also frustrated that the out-of-date technology
had not kept pace with modern patient care. He wanted to use the most advanced equipment for assessing,
monitoring and treating the critically ill patients in his care.
“I take a lot of pride in my job, and I feel a great passion for what I do. These
new vital sign monitors allow me to take that to an advanced level,” says Maier.
In his role as a Staff Champion, Maier served as a “face” of the campaign and, on his own time, spoke
to local businesses and service clubs to explain the vital importance of the new monitors. He was struck
by the interest and commitment and, when each organization supported the campaign with a donation,
he was personally gratified. “Often someone had had a recent experience with acute care at RUH. They
were extremely knowledgeable and considered RUH a great resource for our community,” he says.
Despite being a new dad, and the extra commitment that entails, Maier had the full support of his wife,
Chelsea. He also had the support and guidance of the professional staff at the RUH Foundation.
“Building a culture of philanthropy is about supporting each other—the Foundation supports the
physicians, nurses and staff at RUH and in turn, they support the work of the Foundation,” says Arla
Gustafson, CEO of RUH Foundation. “We proved that with our Royal Vital Care Campaign!”

A Champion in Business A Champion of Care
As a businessperson, Curtis
Merrifield strives to exceed
expectations every day. That
same passion to excel served him
well as a Volunteer Champion of
the Royal Vital Care Campaign.
Through his personal contacts
in the automotive industry, he
assisted in raising close to
$80,000 for state-of-the-art vital
sign monitors at RUH.
“I saw the need and wanted to
help,” says Merrifield, a Director of
Mainline Motors, a family business
with GM dealerships in Rosetown,
Watrous, Kindersley and Virden. “I
know many of the dealers in the industry.
“I knew they would be more likely to support the
campaign if they were asked by someone they knew.
It was very rewarding for me when they said ‘Yes!’ ”
Thanks to Merrifield’s personal connections, donations were made to
the Royal Vital Care Campaign by Saskatoon Motor Products, Midcan
Brokers, Western Sales and Greenfield Agro Services, in addition to a
substantial donation from his company, Mainline Motors. He says the
founders of Mainline Motors—his father, Gerald Merrifield, and partner
Donald Campbell—have supported the Royal University Hospital
Foundation for many years.
“I have three kids now.
As you grow older and
have a family, your
priorities change,” says
the younger Merrifield.
“We support our local
community hospitals,
too, but also recognize
the need to support the
Royal University Hospital
because it serves our
area of Saskatchewan.
We want the very best
care for our families.”
Fundraising was a new
venture for Merrifield,
and he approached the
experience with an open mind and professional support from RUH
Foundation. He says the experience swelled his appreciation for the
work of the Foundation in supporting excellence in health care at RUH.
Curtis Merrifield in his auto showroom in Rosetown.
“Curtis Merrifield was a pleasure to work with,” says Gay Oldhaver, the
Foundation’s Major and Planned Giving Officer. “Not only did he make
a donation on behalf of Mainline Motors, he used his company’s good
reputation to leverage even more funds for our hospital. Everyone
wins.”
You might say that Curtis Merrifield knows both the car business and
the “care” business from the inside out!
