According to Locke, the department relies predominantly upon
volunteers and is able to employ
only four “career persons who
are permanently assigned to our
station.” He has one daytime employee working Monday through
Friday and three others who alternate on a shift schedule, basically working every other day.
Like most volunteer fire companies, the SCVFD relies on
various entities and organizations for funding. A VFD may be
financially supported by taxes or
other government entity as well
as corporate and private dona-
tions, federal grants, and auxiliary members or firefighters’ associations.
Even governmental support for
these services isn’t always as dependable as these men and women. Just this past year, Frederick
County was forced to cut nearly
15% of its support to volunteer
fire departments and county ambulance and rescue services in its
2010 Budget.
The need for fire and emergency
services are one of the many necessities in life that we don’t factor into our household budgets
and in some cases, totally forget

The Stephens City Historic Preservation Committee met
Tuesday, August 18th to review applications submitted by
Main street business owners and residents. Improvements,
additions, alterations and new construction goes before the
committee in order to keep the integrity of downtown Stephens City within its historic design. The committee is responsible for helping to implement the Town’s historic preservation and community design goals within the Town. Three
building owners submitted applications for alterations or additions to the Town for structural consideration. All three applicants requests were approved and determined to be within
the Town’s design goals.

The gymnasium at Sherando
High School was packed Monday
with student-athletes, coaches,
parents, teachers and other supporters of the Warrior Fall Athletic Programs. The 17th Annual
Fall Sports Kick-off Rally was underway and featured the athletes
from all 11 fall teams.
Activities Director Jason Barbe
opened the evening by praising
the athletes for their hard work
during summer practices and

camps, which began August 1st.
Barbe also thanked the Warrior
Club for sponsoring that night’s
rally and all of the other support
they provide to the athletic programs at Sherando High. In the
last two years the Warrior Club
has provided over $85,000 to the
teams for equipment and necessary supplies, and an additional

The Varsity Cheerleaders began practicing the first week of
August and many of their summer sessions included what Head
Coach Tom Grim referred to
as “marathon practices” – ses-

day. Junior Morgan Hoenig dislocated her knee at Cheer Camp

cheerleading uniform to the rally

August 26 – September 1, 2009 • The Sherando Times • Page While the new school year begins for everyone at Sherando High School this week, the
student-athletes participating in fall sports have already been at the school almost every
day since the first week of August.

down into Morgan and knocked
her to the ground. She was originally told she would be sidelined
for three weeks but now, Morgan
has been told she will be out 6 to
7 weeks.
“I will be back out there later
this fall but I’ll miss the competition season,” Hoenig said.
“I should be 100% ready to go
by the winter cheering season
though.” Asked if she was able
to participate in any subsequent
cheerleading practices, Hoenig
stated, “Nope, not at all. At practices my new job is to just control
the music.” Hoenig went on to
say she was glad it was only her
junior year and hopefully she will
have better luck at next summer’s
Cheer Camp for her senior year.
The final group of student-athletes to be presented at the event
was the Varsity Football team.
There were some laughs from the
audience when Head Coach Bill
Hall introduced senior Tayjon
Gaskins saying, “Tayjon didn’t
want me to say this, but he came
from Handley [High School.]”
Gaskins played football for three
years at Sherando’s Winchester
arch-rival, the Handley Judges.

When asked how he ended up at
Sherando he said, “My parents
just wanted a bigger house so we
moved out here.” Gaskins said he
still had many friends at Handley
but was looking forward to playing against his former team this
fall. “It makes me work hard [to
think about playing against the
Judges].”
Standout running back, Roger Smith, said he has done a lot
this off-season to prepare for the
upcoming year. “I’ve been lifting
a lot more. I’m always trying to
work hard to get better.”
Senior Dontrell Roberts is looking forward to his third year on
the team. In 2007, the Warriors
reached the State Championship Game but fell short to Amherst County High School. Last
year, however, Sherando failed
to make the play-offs. “We have
a good team this year,” Roberts
said. “Coach [Hall] laid out some
goals for us, first one being to become a team. I think we can be a
lot better this year. We are going
to win the Apple Cup and hopefully we can get back to the playoffs this year too,” said Roberts.
The Apple Cup is presented each
year to the football team with the
best overall record between Sherando, Handley, Millbrook and
James Wood high schools.

Warrior Club Co-President
Marilyn Wilkins encouraged
people in the community to get
involved with the athletic boosters at Sherando High School. “We
are not just an organization made
up of parents of athletes. Anyone
can join. You don’t even have to
have an affiliation with Sherando High. We welcome anyone,”
Wilkins went on to say.
The Warrior Club conducts
fundraising for athletic teams,
promotes Warrior team spirit,
and promotes the school’s sports
teams in the community. This
year the Warrior Club is excited
to sponsor the Homecoming
Festivities in October, according
to Wilkins. The week of October
18-24 will be declared “Sherando
Warrior Week” by the mayor of
Stephens City. A carnival will
take place in the downtown area
Oct. 21 to 23 and the streets in
Stephens City will close down
that Friday, as the annual homecoming parade will take over the
town. Following the parade, there
will be a bonfire on the Sherando
campus to raise support for the
football team who will host the
Eagles from Liberty High School
on Saturday, October 24.
Everyone from the area is encouraged to come out to the carnival, parade, bonfire, and the
football game, as all events are
open to the general public. To get
involved in the Sherando Warrior
Club or to get more information
on Homecoming Week, Wilkins
encourages you to visit their official website at www.SherandoWarriorClub.com.

Frederick County Public School Students Return to Class August 26th
Frederick
County
Public
Schools will open for the 20092010 school year on Wednesday,
August 26, 2009. Schools Superintendent Patricia Taylor says,
“There’s always a special excitement associated with the first day
among students, parents, teachers, and school staff. Thanks to
many hours of hard work by staff,
we are ready to welcome students
back approximately 13,000 students to our buildings and are
committed to working with each
one to ensure they have a successful year.”
The start of the 2009-2010
school year will mark the opening
of Greenwood Mill Elementary
School. Greenwood Mill is Frederick County’s largest elementary
school and totals 100,465 square
feet. The building is located on
approximately 15.8 acres in the
Sovereign
Village/Lynnhaven
area and is bordered by Channing Drive, Woodrow Road, and
Lynnhaven Drive. The total cost
for the site and to construct and
equip the school was $23.2 million dollars. The project was
completed on time and within
budget.
August 26 also will mark the
opening of the Northwestern
Regional Education Program
(NREP) at the Senseny Road
School. The facility also will be
home to Apple Country Head
Start.
NREP was previously
housed in two locations. One
was located on Smithfield Avenue. The other was the former
Robinson Elementary School
in Winchester. Apple Country
Head Start was previously located at the former Stephens City
High School.
Taylor says, “Although budget
considerations prompted the
idea to relocate NREP, the final
decision to consolidate the program into a single location was
made based upon what is best for
students. Having NREP in one
location will help us use program
resources more effectively and
more efficiently for students.”
Enrollment for the 2009-2010
school year is projected to be
13,092, an increase of 179 students over 2008-2009. Despite
the projected increase in enrollment, the school division’s budget for FY10 was reduced by $4.9
million compared to FY09. The
reduction was the result of the
economic downturn impacting
all levels of government. In addition, the school division is operating with 67 fewer positions this
year than it did a year ago.
Taylor says, “Despite the challenges we will face this year, every
member of the Frederick County
Public Schools team is committed to providing students with
a quality education and keeping
school as normal as possible. As
is our practice, we will be monitoring enrollment and finances
closely throughout the year. Historically, we’ve seen variations
in enrollment during difficult
economic times and that could
be the case again this year. Enrollment impacts operations and
finances.”
To prepare for the start of the
new school year, 64 new licensed
staff members have been hired as
of August 17, 2009, along with 18

says the new teachers have an average of 5.4 years of experience
and 47 percent have advanced
degrees. All of the individuals
hired for the start of the 20092010 school year are replacing
employees who’ve left the school
division and/or retired. There
were no new positions included
in the fiscal 2010 budget.
With the new school year starting next week, school officials are
joining with the Frederick County
Sheriff ’s Office and the Virginia
State Police in reminding motorists to use extra caution, especially in school zones and around
school buses.
Motorists traveling in the area
around Greenwood Mill Elementary School between 8:30 and 9
a.m. and between 3:30 and 4:00
p.m. should pay particular attention to students walking to
and from school. In addition to
being Frederick County’s newest school, Greenwood Mill Elementary is the only school in
the county with a designated
walk zone. Although temporary
transportation is being provided
to some students living within
the walk zone, many students will
be walking to and from school
throughout the school year.
Frederick County has three high
schools, four middle schools, 11
elementary schools, and two instructional centers. It’s the 19th
largest of 134 school divisions in
Virginia.

“We have a total of four bands.
All the students are in the marching band and they are also in either the symphonic band, the

And unlike American Idol, the final decision on which the last band standing will be is up

This time you want to be the “Last Band Standing”
Move over American Idol, we have new judges in town
By Lorie Showalter
The Sherando Times
The ultimate summer event for
teens is about to converge this
Saturday, August 29th at the Sherando Pool in Stephens City. The
Frederick County Parks and Recreation Department is hosting
the event and has been signing up
participants all summer. All band
members must be under the age
of 21 to enter … now there’s a
unique opportunity specific to
those under 21 and not must be
over 21 which every teen dreads
hearing.
Move over Hanson brothers …
well, they were probably already
out of the way, so move over Jonas brothers, there just may be a
new group, and they don’t even
have to be related to one another
that just might usurp their turf,
not to mention give American
Idol a run for its money!
We’re assuming they must also
be talented, because the entrants
must supply their own equipment
and no self-respecting teenager
will be out there playing if they
haven’t dedicated some portion
of their time to practice! In addition to being capable, they must
also follow the rules of decency
and not sing inappropriate lyrics,
whether of their own writing talents or through the use of some
questionable lyrics of others.
And unlike American Idol, the
final decision on which the last
band standing will be is up to the
audience, not a set of picky and
sometimes controversial celebrity judges.
The place to be is the Sherando
pool and the competing bands
pay $10 per band, per event to
compete. The fee for those fortunate enough to vote on who’s the
best is $5 per person to attend
and vote.
Gates open at 6:30 and the first
band begins shortly thereafter.
So, if you want a clear view and
a good spot, head out early and
meet the bands this Saturday,
August 29th … forget American
Idol, this is for real!

Wayside Theatre presents: “Robert E. lee and John Brown, Lighting
the Fuse” -- part of the Quad State 150th Anniversary
Wayside Theatre has announced
the cast for the third production of
the season, Robert E. Lee and John
Brown; Lighting the Fuse. This is
historical play with music is written
by Warner Crocker with music by
Wayside Theatre resident composer
Steve Przybylski. Robert E. Lee and
John Brown; Lighting the Fuse begins performances on August 29 and
close on September 26. The production is part of the “Quad State 150th
Anniversary of John Brown’s raid on
Harper’s Ferry in 1859.” Robert E.
Lee and John Brown; Lighting the
Fuse is sponsored by Q102-Clear
Channel.
Robert E. Lee and John Brown;
Lighting the Fuse tells the story of the
tumultuous period in American History leading up the American Civil War.
It focuses on John Brown and his
infamous raid on Harpers Ferry and
Robert E. Lee, who was assigned to
quash Brown’s attempted rebellion.
Both men became and remain major symbols of this uniquely American conflict. The brief episode that
brought them together on the banks
of the Potomac and Shenandoah
rivers became a touchstone for both
sides in the eventual war and is often
overlooked and overshadowed by the
scope of the war’s significant impact
on American history and culture.
Crocker has assembled a talented
cast of actors for the nine member
cast. Wayside Theatre veteran John
Alcott will return after several seasons’ absence to play John Brown.
Mr. Alcott has appeared in many past
Wayside Theatre productions including A Christmas Carol, Art, Talley’s
Folly, Blithe Spirit, Robert E. Lee and
John Brown, and The Last Night of
Ballyhoo among others.
He will be joined by veteran Wayside Theatre John Dow (Robert E.
Lee and John Brown) recreating
the role of Robert E. Lee. Mr. Dow
is a Washington D.C. based actor
who has performed at Arena Stage,
Everyman Theatre, The Studio Theatre, American Century Theatre, The
Folger Shakespeare Library, Olney
Theatre Center and the Woolly Mammoth Theatre among others. The role
of Frederick Douglass will be played
by Stephen Seals (Robert E. Lee and
John Brown), a Richmond, Virginia
based actor who has performed at
Swift Creek Mill Theatre, Encore! Theatre, and Theatre IV among others.
These three actors will be supported
by a six man ensemble of actors
playing multiple roles including JEB
Stuart, John Brown’s sons, James
Buchanan, citizens of Harpers Ferry
and various other characters involved
in the raid and events leading up to it.
The ensemble includes Vaughn Irving
(Man of La Mancha, Buddy- The Buddy Holly Story, Southern Crossroads,
Shadow of the Raven), Ricky Hesson
(A Christmas Carol, The Comedy of
Errors, Romeo and Juliet), Sun King
Davis (Man of La Mancha, A Christmas Carol), Cody Murphy (Man of La
Mancha), Dave Sucharski (Man of La
Mancha), and Jayson Belew (Man of
La Mancha).
Directed by Warner Crocker, Music
by Steve Przybylski, Set Design by Til
Turner, Costumes Design by Tamara
Carruthers and Lighting Design by
Paul Callahan.
According to Crocker, “this is an
exciting group of performers who will
be asked to perform a large array of
characters in telling the story. While
the focus of the story is certainly on
the principle characters, I believe the
six man ensemble as a unit will prove
to be an equally compelling character
in its own right.”
Crocker continues, “I am fascinated by the complexity of these men
and the complexity of the issues. I
am equally fascinated by the shortcuts we take in examining our own
history and heritage that often belies
that complexity. I believe that the play
examines that complexity in a way
that only live theatre can do.”
Robert E. Lee and John Brown;
Lighting the Fuse begins performances with Saturday, August 29
at 2:30pm and 8:00pm. The official
Opening Night is Sunday, August
30 at 6:30pm. Performances will
continue through September 26.
Ticket prices are $25 to $30 dollars
for adults. Ticket price for children
17 years and under is $10 for any
show. Senior and Student discounts
are available upon request, as well as
group discounts. Wayside Theatre
also sells discounted subscriptions
for the entire season with options that
fit any budget and any schedule.
Performances each week for Robert E. Lee and John Brown; Lighting
the Fuse will be Wednesday, Saturday Sunday matinees at 2:30pm,
Thursday, Friday and Saturday evening at 8:00pm.

The Sherando Times
People are walking with a purpose these days and not just for
fitness. About four years ago,
the one-hundred mile club was
formed as one of the Frederick
County Parks & Recreation Department (FCPRD) programs incentives to get people out, active,
and moving around.
According to Stacy Herbaugh,
Facilities Coordinator, “It was
also meant to give people a
chance to find a walking partner
if they were looking for one.”
Currently the club boasts about
50 regular members. While the
club meets periodically to walk
together at specific locations,
this club meets more often via internet and email than in person.
When a prospective interested
member signs up, he or she receives emails with helpful hints,
reminders and encouragement!
Miles walked or run are submitted by the member on a regular basis each week and the information goes online (using screen
names) so you know how your
efforts compare to the group.
If an individual doesn’t have internet access or doesn’t want to
use email results can be called in
to the main office and provided
directly to Stacy and she will turn

the Sherando High School track,

through a winter lighted landscape for adults and children.
(This particular walk has been
touted as a magical evening for
children or a romantic night for
couples.)
The purpose behind all of the
walking events is to exercise,
enjoy companionship, share in
goals and provide a mental and

ourselves beyond the daily, sometimes drudgery that exercise can

me meet new people, it gives me
a goal for my walking and running and helps me a better runner. I run in races, in the month

At one time, the club offered Tshirts for members who reached
the one-hundred mile goal. However, due to economic constraints
that aspect had to be rescinded

Some members have reached

inspired by others who’ve been in

Stacy is planning another

hopes to see the group continue
to evolve, planning walks based
on their individual preferences
like how long a trail is, the surface
they prefer to walk on, if some
prefer to run, or bring children.
Currently, the average age group
of the members is 40 and up.

Most people today agree that
our cities and towns are starting to look more and more alike.
Whether you travel twenty miles
away or twenty-five hundred
miles away franchise after franchise causes one to view only familiar territory.
It’s gotten to the point that the
only way to note differences from
state to state are in landscapes or
accidentally driving by the few
mom and pop stores that have
survived the larger and more
common chain stores across the
country.
People used to travel away from
home for the pure joy of simply
setting their eyes on something
they hadn’t seen before.

Joann remembers her father
as a man who could do almost
anything, like plumbing, wiring,
and bricklaying to name a few.
“He did most of the work building and designing the park,” says
Joann. After her mother, who ran
the shop, passed away in 1981
and Jim Sidwell died a few years
later, Geraci discontinued adding
dinosaurs to the park.
In 1987 Joseph Geraci passed
away and left the business to his
four daughters, Joann, Barbara,
Grace, and Gloria who died in
2001.
Dinosaur Land began increasing its collection of dinosaurs after the daughters located another
maker of beasts, Mark Cline of
Lexington, Virginia. In the past

Joann said, “A triceratops is

Megalosaurus is taking a bite out
of an Apatosaurus and so on, and
it’s very noticeable which dinosaurs Mark made and which were
the original ones made by Jim

She continued, “We have many

children. They are surprised we’re
still here!”

Geraci’s dinosaur discovery
that began over 40 years ago has
remained a family tradition, not
just for those of us who remember it as children, but also literally
for his family. All four of Joann’s

Geraci’s daughters continued

Hunter continues to welcome

ushers them through the cave inside the store, which leads them
to the park upon which his great
grandfather saved his dinosaurs

ARIES (March 21 to April 19)
Changing your mind doesn’t come
easily for Lambs, who place a high
value on commitment. But new facts
could emerge that might persuade you
to rethink your situation.
TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) This
is a good time to put that fine Bovine’s
eye for beauty to work in redecorating
your home or workplace. And don’t
forget to indulge yourself in some personal time as well.
GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Your
sense of loyalty to someone who asks
for your help is commendable. But
make sure there are no information
gaps that should be filled in before you
move too far too quickly.
CANCER (June 21 to July 22)
Don’t let difficult people raise the
Crab’s ire levels this week. Avoid them
if you can. If not, resist telling them
off, even if you think they deserve it.
Things improve by week’s end.
LEO (July 23 to August 22) Your
suspicions about a colleague might be
on the mark. But you also could be
misreading the signals you believe
you’re getting. Do some discreet
checking before jumping to conclusions.
VIRGO (August 23 to September
22) Take some time out from your
many tasks and see if someone might
be trying to reach out to you. You
could be surprised to learn who it is
and why you might want to recipro-
cate.
LIBRA (September 23 to October
22) You still might want to do more
investigating before taking on a new
commitment. Later would not be the
time to try to fill in any crucial gaps in
what you need to know about it.
SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A new opportunity should be
carefully studied. It might offer some
of the things you’ve been looking for.
Or it could contain new possibilities
you never considered. Check it out.
SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to
December 21) You might have to work
harder this week to get people to listen
to what you have to say. But if you stay
with it, you could start to get your message out to many by the week’s end.
CAPRICORN (December 22 to
January 19) Although family matters
again take up a big chunk of the Goat’s
time, the week also offers a chance to
explore a new career move you’d been
contemplating for a while.
AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Applying your practicality
(what does it offer me?) and your creativity (how can I improve on it?)
could provide sound reasons for seriously considering that new offer.
PISCES (February 19 to March 20)
The single set will find that keeping
their romantic aspirations on high
gives Cupid a better target to aim at.
Paired Pisces will find that this week
helps reinforce their relationships.
BORN THIS WEEK: You believe
in encouraging others to demand the
best from themselves. You would be a
fine sports coach, as well as an enlightened teacher.

Kids need to eat fruit every day to be
sure they’re getting enough vitamins
and fiber. With blueberries in the
fridge or freezer, providing healthful
fruit treats for your family is easy.
Blueberries never need to be chopped,
peeled, cored or stemmed — just
rinse, and they’re ready to enjoy as a
quick snack or recipe ingredient. By
serving your family fruit-filled breakfasts, snacks and desserts, you’re also
helping them develop good eating
habits that can last a lifetime.
Here are some quick ways to use
blueberries for your child’s breakfast
or after-school snack that are also fun
for the whole family. These simple
suggestions are as easy to make as
they are to eat — so even the youngest
chefs in the family can help out:
• Put a blueberry smile on your
child’s pancakes or waffles.
• Add blueberries to a peanut butter
sandwich and call it a PB&B.
• For a tasty take-along snack or
lunchbox treat, mix dried blueberries,
your child’s favorite cereal and some
mini pretzels in a zip-top bag.
• In a glass, layer blueberries, yogurt
and crushed cereal or graham crackers
to make a quick and easy parfait.
• Make True-Blue Ice Cubes: Fill an
ice-cube tray with blueberry juice and
add a few blueberries. After freezing,
add the dark-blue cubes to orange
juice or lemonade.
In this week’s recipe for Blueberry
Tortilla Rollups, agave nectar is suggested to sweeten the berries and to
make this recipe a healthy, low-fat
snack or dessert. Agave nectar comes
from the agave plant and is a delicious
and safe alternative to table sugar.
