The Cherokee Indians were the original inhabitants of Laurens County. John Duncan (a native of Aberdeen,
Scotland) was the first white settler to inhabit the area. He arrived in 1752 from Pennsylvania and settled along a
creek in the northeastern section of the county, between present-day Clinton and Whitmire. Scottish-Irish
immigrants out of Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia became the predominant settlers in this area.
The General Assembly passed an act on March 12, 1785, whereby six counties were established out of the Old 96
District. Laurens County was one of those counties. The town of Laurens (known as Laurensville well into the
19th century) became the county seat; the first courthouse was erected in 1786. The current courthouse was built
in 1840 and enlarged several times over the past 160 years. Hillcrest Square, a spacious court and office facility,
opened in November 2000 to serve the county’s growing population.During the Revolutionary War, Laurens
County was the site of several significant battles including Musgrove Mill on August 18, 1780. Today, the
location of this battle is marked by the Musgrove Mill State Historic Site, which opened to the public on May 5,
2003. The visitors center at the park documents the role South Carolina patriots played in winning American
independence.
By 1820, Laurens was known for its tailor-made clothes. Andrew Johnson, the 17th president of the United
States, came to Laurens in 1824 and established a tailor shop in the town square. By 1840, the area was booming
with establishments, including medical practitioners; a fancy confectionery and fruit store; carriage, buggy and
wagon shops; tailoring establishments; building contractors; flour and corn mills; and 81 registered whiskey
distilleries.
By the end of the 19th century, textiles were becoming very important in Laurens County and the Upstate. The
Laurens Cotton Mill was established in 1895. Mercer Silas Bailey built the first cotton mill in Clinton in 1896,
and both Lydia Mill and Watts Mill were established in 1902. However, over the past decade, textiles have been
displaced by a wide variety of industries.
The city of Laurens owes its beautiful location to John Rogers, Charles Allen, Jonathan Downes and others who
were deputized by the 14th and 51st Regiments of South Carolina to lay out a town.
Laurens County derived its name from a patriot, warrior and statesman, the Honorable Henry Laurens of
Charleston. Henry Laurens was president of the Continental Congress during the Revolutionary War and later
served as ambassador to France to secure aid in helping the colonies with their independence.
Laurens County is situated in the southeastern part of the upstate region of South Carolina. Located along I-26
and I-385, the county is geographically centered between Greenville, Spartanburg and Columbia.
South Carolina’s largest airport, Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport, is less than 45 minutes from
Laurens County. GSP serves the Upstate with 10 passenger airlines and 90 flights daily to 13 nonstop
destinations. GSP is located 12 miles northwest of the city in Greenville and has connections to major airports
such as Chicago O’Hare, Philadelphia, Newark, and Dulles and Reagan National airports in Washington, D.C.
Charlotte Douglas and Columbia Metropolitan airports, both a short drive from Laurens County, provide
convenient air travel as well.
Laurens County facilities include a general aviation airport to service the county’s air traffic. The Laurens
County Airport, which was renovated in 1992, offers service to turbo props and business jets. Private and
corporate aircraft use the 3,900-foot paved runway. Other services offered by the airport are hangar rental spots,
maintenance and fuel service.
Rail service to Laurens County is provided by CSX Transportation, with the company’s main line passing
directly through Clinton. The Carolina Piedmont division of South Carolina Central Railroad operates a 34.4mile rail system between Laurens and Greenville that runs parallel to I-385.
For those in need of transportation by sea, the Port of Charleston is 168 miles from Laurens County and easily
accessible via I-26. The Port of Charleston is the fifth- largest facility of its kind in the United States and is the
second-largest container port on the East Coast.
A number of annual events delight Laurens County residents of all ages, including:
The Little River Bridge Run draws hundreds of running enthusiasts to Laurens each March.
Joanna Festival occurs in April of each year and offers craft booths, rides for children, food vendors and live
entertainment.
Main Street Laurens USA hosts Sip-n-Stroll, a spring wine tasting event held around the historic Court House
Square.
Celebrate Clinton is a month-long celebration of the arts and entertainment held each April in Clinton.
The bank of the Saluda River is the setting for the Catfish Feastival each year in Ware Shoals. This unique
celebration draws thousands of people to enjoy a wide variety of events during Memorial Day weekend.
The town of Joanna, formerly known as Goldville, hosts the annual Goldville Reunion each June. The event
allows current and former residents a time to reminisce on days gone by and to catch up on each other’s lives.
Town Rhythms, a multi- concert summer music series, is held each summer in downtown Clinton. Laurens Idol,
a local musical competition, is held each June at the Little River Amphitheater in Laurens.
The Laurens County Relay for Life, the signature activity of the American Cancer Society, is an annual event
held in May. The 12-hour celebration is filled with entertainment, food and camaraderie. The opening ceremony
is the Cancer Survivors’ Victory Lap with the highlight of the evening, the Luminary Ceremony, held after dark.
Flight of the Dove, a cycling event hosted by Hospice of Laurens County, brings hundreds of cycling enthusiasts
to the county each August.
Each year, New Kids on the Block welcomes Presbyterian College students to Clinton during orientation week in
August.
Coming Home to Cross Hill is held on the Saturday prior to Labor Day. You can enjoy crafts, carnival rides, live
entertainment, a parade and lots of food at this annual event.
Pioneer Day is held the second Saturday of September in Owings and celebrates the county’s rich history. The
event includes a parade, living history demonstrations, period music and food.
Fountain Inn is the site of the annual Aunt Het Festival held in early October.
The city of Laurens highlights a variety of local barbecue during the annual Squealin’ on the Square in October.
The town of Gray Court hosts a community festival each October celebrating gospel music. The event features a
carnival and food court.
Laurens Lights runs from early December through New Year’s Day. Join county residents as they stroll along
Little River and enjoy thousands of holiday lights and tours of the historic district, learn about President Andrew
Johnson’s life in Laurens, and see homes dating back to 1812. The slate of holiday activities also includes the
annual Reindeer Run.
Fountain Inn hosts the popular Spirit of Christmas Past each December. The month-long celebration includes
carriage rides, concerts and a tour of homes.
Laurens County hosts seven Christmas parades in early December in Clinton, Fountain Inn, Gray Court, Joanna,
Laurens and Ware Shoals and at Whitten Center.
LAURENS
Laurens County is statistically the fastest- growing county in the Upstate, with the 2000 census showing a growth
of 19.7 percent since 1990. According to the latest records, 70,508 people call Laurens County home. Of the
residents of the county, 30 percent live in the two main cities of Clinton and Laurens. The remainder live in the
smaller communities of Cross Hill, Fountain Inn, Gray Court, Hickory Tavern, Mountville, Joanna, Ware Shoals
and Waterloo or in rural areas.
The historic city of Laurens serves as the county seat. The first record of the town being called Laurens, and not
Laurensville, appears on a charter issued in 1873. Today, the area of the public square and most of the
surrounding streets are officially recognized as the “Laurens Historic District,” which has been placed in the
National Register of Historic Places.
The city of Laurens has 9,916 residents and is governed by a Mayor/Council form of government.
CLINTON
The beginnings of Clinton are traced to the arrival of Scottish-Irish immigrants two decades before the American
Revolution. The town itself was officially incorporated in 1852. It was agreed to name the town for Henry
Clinton Young, a lawyer from Laurensville, who helped lay out the first streets. Clinton is the second-largest city
in Laurens County, with 8,091 residents. A City Manager/Council form of government governs the city.
CROSS HILL
The town of Cross Hill is located in southeastern Laurens County, bordered on the east by Newberry County and
on the southwest by Lake Greenwood. The area was a north-south Native American path across the fish dams on
the Broad River and leading to the fish dams on the Savannah River. Many years ago, someone crossed the first
path on a hill and gave Cross Hill its name. Rosemont, the family plantation of Ann Pamela Cunningham, leader
in the effort to save President George Washington’s home in Mount Vernon, Virginia, was located near the
community.
Today the town of Cross Hill has 601 residents and is governed by a Mayor/ Council form of government.
FOUNTAIN INN
Fountain Inn takes its name from the old inn with a fountain that attracted travelers seeking rest from the
tiresome stagecoach journeys between Greenville and the Low Country. It is a charming small town with
landmarks, interesting anecdotes and historic figures. “Peg Leg” Bates, the famous dancer and entertainer, was a
native son.
Fountain Inn has a population of 6,017 residents. It has a Mayor/Council form of government. A large portion of
the town is located in Greenville County.
GRAY COURT
Nestled in the northwest corner of Laurens County is the town of Gray Court, originally named Dorroh or
Dorrohville in honor of a local family. On October 17, 1899, the name was changed to Gray Court and the town
was chartered three days later.
The population of Gray Court has seen an increase of 11 percent in the past 10 years, with the 2000 census
recording 1,021 residents. The town has a Mayor/Council form of government.
JOANNA
Joanna is the largest non-incorporated community in the county, with 1,609 residents. For many years the
community was known as Goldville until its name was officially changed on August 1, 1948. During the War
Between the States, the community around the railroad was known as Martin’s Depot. On the night of April 30,
1865, Confederate President Jefferson Davis and his entourage spent the night at the nearby Lafayette Young
House during their escape from Richmond at the close of the war.
WATERLOO
The town of Waterloo is located 12 miles south of Laurens on the shores of beautiful Lake Greenwood. The town
was incorporated on December 4, 1885.
The small community of 203 residents offers many outdoor sporting and recreational activities. Waterloo is
governed by a Mayor/Council form of government.
Laurens County has many attractive neighborhoods, and housing is plentiful, ranging from single-family
dwellings to apartments. The county offers a variety of architectural styles, from contemporary structures to
gracious older homes and small farms. Laurens County has more than 40 subdivisions, with prices varying from
$25,000 to over $200,000. Rental properties deviate according to locale.
Quality housing is available and affordable to everyone. Many fine real estate agents are members of the Laurens
County Chamber of Commerce and are eager to help you find the home you are looking for.
More than 180 local churches provide worship and fellowship for the citizens of Laurens County. Some of the
most beautiful and richly historic buildings in the county are its churches.
Organized in 1764, Duncan Creek Presbyterian Church is the oldest church in Laurens County. The adjacent
cemetery contains the graves of several Revolutionary War soldiers. Other 18th- century churches are Old King’s
Chapel Methodist Church, organized in 1789, and Liberty Springs Presbyterian Church, organized in 1767.
The Baptist denomination has 71 churches in the county, while the Presbyterians and Methodists have 18
churches each. Laurens County is also home to a number of other denominations, including AME, Catholic,
Episcopal, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Latter-day Saints, Lutheran, Pentecostal, Wesleyan and more.
Laurens County has numerous recreational venues throughout the county, including a combination of baseball/
softball fields, children’s play areas, tennis courts, picnic areas, and basketball courts. A skating rink, bowling
lanes and public swimming pools are available.
Two YMCAs are accessible, and both coordinate adult and youth recreational leagues in the county.
Laurens Speedway offers auto racing from April through September. Darlington International Raceway and
Charlotte Motor Speedway are easy drives from Laurens County.
Hunting opportunities are available on private and leased lands and in Sumter National Forest. The national
forest lands also offer off-highway vehicle trails, hiking, horseback riding and canoeing.
Skeet shooting and turkey, deer, quail and other hunting packages, as well as lodging and meeting facilities, are
available at Harris Springs Sportsman’s Preserve between Cross Hill and Waterloo. The Clinton House
Plantation, located two miles off I-26 on Highway 56 north of Clinton, offers bird and duck hunting, deer and
turkey hunts, and corporate meeting and conference facilities.
Laurens County has two private 18-hole golf courses: Musgrove Mill, an Arnold Palmer World Class
Championship Course and chosen as one of the top modern courses in the U.S. by Golfweek magazine, and
Lakeside Country Club, which also has swimming and tennis. Rolling S Golf Club is a public 18-hole golf
course. There are more than 50 golf courses in the Upstate, all of which are within a short drive of Laurens
County, and Augusta, home of the Masters, is only a couple of hours down the road.
You might not think about traveling south to ski, but Laurens County is a short drive away from such beautiful
mountain resorts as Sugar Mountain, Beech Mountain and Ober Gatlinburg.
Private and public lakes are numerous, including Lake Greenwood, with more than 200 miles of shoreline, and
Lake Rabon, as well as the Enoree and Saluda rivers, which provide excellent fishing and boating. Myrtle Beach,
Charleston and Hilton Head make ideal weekend getaways. Laurens County is also a short drive away from the
Great Smoky Mountains.
There are 12 parks in the county, which offer recreational opportunities for children. The parks provide
playground equipment and some offer picnic shelters, basketball courts and ball fields.
Baseball, football, basketball and soccer are available through the local high schools and Presbyterian College.
Atlantic Coast and Southeastern Conference sports are within a one-hour drive at Clemson University and the
University of South Carolina. Greenville, less than an hour’s drive from Laurens County, offers minor league
hockey. Charlotte, North Carolina, offers professional football with the Carolina Panthers.
Two public school districts, three private schools, one technical college, one four-year college and a branch
university meet the educational needs of Laurens County. Numerous other colleges and universities are within a
one-hour commute.
PUBLIC SCHOOLS
Laurens County School District 56 serves the City of Clinton and southern Laurens County. The district serves
approximately 3,500 students in four elementary schools and three secondary schools. All of the district’s schools
are located in Clinton with the exception of Joanna-Woodson Elementary in the Joanna community.
All seven schools are accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and the South Carolina
Department of Education. The district has an excellent 18:1 pupil to teacher ratio and a 4:1 student/computer
ratio.
District 56 strives to embrace the five principals on which they stand as they relate to the students, staff and
community. They are environment, uniqueness, collaboration, goals and content.
Clinton High School offers advanced placement courses in English, calculus, American history and biology.
Students who qualify may earn college credit through a cooperative agreement with Presbyterian College.
Computer-assisted instruction is offered in all schools. A full complement of extracurricular activities is provided
in a variety of award-winning programs.
District 56 has both a nationally recognized JROTC program and National Beta Club. They offer strong
programs for the academically gifted, services for students with disabilities, outdoor environmental labs, National
Wildlife Federation Schoolyard Habitats®, a National Honor Society, state- recognized service learning labs and
a strong band program. The district also collaborates with such prominent organizations as the Dolly Parton
Imagination Library free books program, South Carolina Governor’s Reading Initiative, the Miliken Teacher
Advancement Program and Presbyterian College’s CHAMPS program. About 400 employees work in the
district, and more than half of the teachers hold advanced degrees.
With seven elementary schools, three middle schools and one high school, Laurens County School District 55
serves approximately 6,300 students from the City of Laurens and its surrounding areas. Educational
opportunities are designed for students beginning with four-year-old kindergarten and continuing through grade
12. Instruction focuses on the state and national education standards at every grade level. There are currently
Montessori early childhood programs in five of the schools, as well as two upper elementary sites and one middle
school site.
Write from the Beginning is a developmental writing program for students in kindergarten through eighth grade.
Thinking Maps: Tools for Learning is an organizational system used by teachers and students as part of the
writing program.
In an effort to address literacy needs, District 55 uses an assessment process to determine each child’s individual
academic growth and to understand a student’s current performance level. Using this information, teachers are
able to discover students’ reading and writing levels. This process allows educators to tailor each student’s
instruction in reading and writing in order to maximize growth while helping students reach their potentials.
Laurens District 55 High School houses students in grades 9-12 and was chosen by the Southern Regional
Educational Board as a “High School that Works.” This selection identifies LDHS as a school that has exemplary
educational programs. Semester scheduling has been adopted at LDHS as a means to broaden the opportunities
for all students. Advanced placement classes are offered in six areas. LDHS, in conjunction with the United
States Navy, offers a Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps program. A Tech-Prep program is offered and
includes Math for Technology, Communications for the Workplace and Principles of Technology. These classes
provide students with real work experience. A Manufacturing Certification course is offered, providing training
skills needed for entry-level positions in local manufacturing plants. Graduates who earn the Manufacturing
Certificate enhance their employment possibilities. LDHS Raider teams compete in football, basketball,
volleyball, wrestling, baseball, softball, soccer, track, cross-country, tennis and golf.
Every day, the Laurens County Lifelong Learning Center strengthens the local work force and fosters opportunity
for those who are a part of it. Courses range from high school diplomas and GEDs to introductory computer skills.
The local adult education program focuses on a variety of skills that are now considered basic and crucial in the
workplace. Graduates of the Manufacturing Certification Program are guaranteed interviews with any of 30
companies that are hiring. This unique set of courses translates the needs of local employers who have
considerable input on the curriculum.
In addition to courses taught in traditional learning environments, Lifelong Learning calls upon a team of
experienced industrial managers to provide training that is tailored to each workplace. Subject matter of the
Training that Works program includes OSHA-approved safety courses, quality assurance with statistical process
control, and English and Spanish as second languages.
PRIVATE SCHOOLS
Faith Christian School in Laurens is a full-service institution with classes for grades K-6. Faith Christian also
offers day care services. Founded in 1965, the school is operated by Faith Baptist Church. The average class size
is 15 students.
Laurens Academy is located one mile off I-385 on Highway 49, convenient to Laurens and Clinton, as well as
Union, Simpsonville and surrounding areas.
The school offers a K4-12 college preparatory curriculum with a nondenominational Christian emphasis and is
accredited by the South Carolina Independent School Association. Visual and choral arts, foreign language, a
computer lab, physical education, dual enrollment (high school/college credit) courses, and a competitive and
successful athletic program are just a few of the things offered at Laurens Academy.
Lighthouse Christian Academy is located on Highway 221 between Laurens and Enoree. The school offers a
quality, Christ-centered education in grades K5-12. Their goal is to educate each child in a Christian atmosphere
and provide them with the academic training they will need to succeed. Annual and monthly tuition plans are
available.
LAURENS COUNTY LIBRARY
The Laurens County Library System operates two libraries and one bookmobile and provides book deposits at
several locations throughout the county for senior citizens.
The 23,000-square-foot Headquarters facility, located at 1017 West Main Street in Laurens, opened in 1989. It
has a large public meeting room that accommodates 80, a smaller conference room, and several study and
tutoring rooms. The 8,200-square-foot Clinton Public Library is located at 107 Jacobs Highway in Clinton. The
bookmobile provides service throughout Laurens County.
In addition to more than 110,000 books, the library’s collection contains books on tape, magazines,
videocassettes and large-type books. Both Clinton and Laurens libraries have computers connected to the Internet
with various programs (including Word, Excel and Powerpoint) loaded and available for public use.
The Headquarters Library in Laurens has an extensive local history and genealogy collection. Both libraries offer
children’s programs throughout the year. Reference services are also available. Resources covering a wide range
of subject areas, including finance and business, are available in both print and electronic format. The library’s
trained and helpful staff is available to assist patrons using these resources. The Laurens County Library and the
Greenville County Library have a reciprocal borrowing agreement allowing residents of both counties to use both
library systems without paying a nonresident fee.
William Plumber Jacobs founded Presbyterian College in 1880, and for many years it was predominately an
institution for the education of men. Presbyterian College became co-educational in 1965. Presbyterian College
has established itself as one of the top colleges in the country and is a fully accredited four-year, private, coeducational, liberal arts institution, classified by the Carnegie Foundation in its top category of small liberal arts
schools.
Satellite operations of the University of South Carolina Union at Laurens began in 1983 with classes offered at
the local junior high school. Since that time, the school has relocated to the Laurens County Higher Education
Center, a state-of-the-art facility that opened in early 2002. USCU-L is especially attractive to adult students who
return either to complete a degree, to take classes that their careers require or to enhance their knowledge of
various academic subjects.
Afternoon and evening courses are the mainstay of the curriculum. In the face of skyrocketing college costs,
some high school graduates also begin their undergraduate studies at USCU-L. Through its concurrent
enrollment program, the school also offers qualified high school juniors and seniors the opportunity to begin their
college coursework at a reduced fee before graduation. They may choose from a variety of classes in the
humanities and the social and natural sciences, which can be applied to associate or baccalaureate degree
programs.
For teachers in area school districts, USCU-L is a source of recertification or advanced degree classes. The
school also serves as a registration and testing site for many telecommunications classes originating at the
university’s main campus in Columbia.
Piedmont Technical College became the eighth of the 16-member institution in the South Carolina Technical
Education System when it was established in 1966 to serve Laurens, Abbeville, Edgefield, Greenwood,
McCormick, Newberry and Saluda counties. Those seven counties represent the largest geographic area served
by any technical college in the state. Piedmont’s main campus is located on a 65-acre plot on Emerald Road in
Greenwood. The Laurens County Center of Piedmont Tech moved to the Laurens County Higher Education
Center on Medical Ridge Road in Clinton in 2002 after more than 11 years at their East Main Street location in
Laurens.
Presbyterian College sponsors a variety of lectures, plays, films, art shows and concerts from September through
April. The Artist’s Coop hosts several art shows, workshops and art form classes throughout the year. The
Laurens County Chorale offers a spring and winter concert. Laurens County Civic Ballet Company conducts an
annual performance designed around children. Laurens County Community Theater offers four to six
performances of top-name productions.
Clinton High School highlights its talented students in a top-name play each spring. Laurens District High School
also offers a number of musical, choral and theatrical productions during the school year.
Laurens County is within an hour’s drive of the two largest metropolitan areas in the state, Greenville and
Columbia, both of which offer a wide variety of fine arts and cultural events.
Residents of Laurens County can find everything they need right around the corner, with a number of retail stores
offering foods and services from groceries to tailoring, or hardware to jewelers. Visitors can also enjoy a
delicious meal from a number of local restaurants ranging from down-home Southern food, Italian, Chinese,
sports bars or Mexican.
Shoppers can find unique gift shops and antique stores as well as garden centers, wedding shops and a fullservice men’s store. If you need it, it can be found in Laurens County.

TEACHERS OF THE YEAR – Debbie Simpson (District 55) and David Schoolfield (District 56) were honored
as the Laurens County Chamber of Commerce Teachers of the Year at the Chamber of Commerce Annual Dinner
on January 22, 2009, at the Mabry-Smith-Yonce Center on the Presbyterian College campus in Clinton.
SMALL BUSINESS OF THE YEAR – Marcia and Gary Rousseau, center, of Magnolia Campground and RV
Park in Kinards, received the Robert M. Vance Small Business of the Year award.
VOLUNTEER HONORED – Cindy Strange of the Laurens County Water and Sewer Commission was honored
as the John P. Faris Volunteer of the Year for her many hours of volunteer service to the Laurens County
Chamber of Commerce.
AMBASSADOR OF THE YEAR – Zeke Benjamin of Firmin Ford in Laurens was honored as the Laurens
County Chamber of Commerce Ambassador of the Year.
TAYLOR HONORED FOR SERVICE – South Carolina Speaker of the House Bobby Harrell, far right, presents
Rep. Adam Taylor with the Order of the Palmetto, South Carolina’s highest honor. Taylor represented the
citizens of District 16 in the South Carolina House of Representatives for 10 years before stepping down in 2008.
Laurens County is home to a wide variety of business services—from large national retail chains and corporate
banking headquarters to the small mom-and-pop operations. Many local businesses have been owned and

Laurens County offers a variety of economic incentives for the development of business and industry. The
Laurens County Council has generally offered incentive packages to new and existing businesses based on the
investment amount, number of jobs created and average wages to be paid.
Laurens County has a potential labor pool just under 35,000 people. Commuters both into and out of Laurens
County provide a prime source of labor, a testament to the strength of the area’s economy. Laurens County
attracts more than 3,700 employees from outside the County annually.
NEW HOTEL – Comfort Suites opened in early 2009 on Highway 56 at the intersection of interstates 26 and 385
in Clinton, adding to the choices of accommodations for visitors to Laurens County.
NEW RESTAURANTS – A number of new restaurants opened across Laurens County recently including the
Bojangles on Jacobs Highway in Clinton.
NEW JOBS – The Milliken Plant completed a $4 million expansion to their manufacturing facility in Laurens
that added 20 new jobs.
GROUNDBREAKING – Presbyterian College in Clinton broke ground for their new Pharmacy School in April
2009. The school, slated to open in August 2010, will be located in downtown Clinton.
Laurens County is blessed with an excellent healthcare system, and an expanding hospital staffed with excellent
physicians is only the beginning. From the new Kids Klinic to Senior Options, young and old alike will find a
commitment to quality and a level of caring unmatched in the Southeast.
The Laurens County Health Care System is a 90-bed medical facility offering specialized programs such as
comprehensive acute care, family-centered maternity care, a modern outpatient surgery and diagnostic center, a
critical care unit with trained CCU medical team, emergency medical services staffed 24 hours, a special cardiac
care and trauma center, home health, Kids Klinic, Cardiac Rehab Program, and more. The Laurens County
Health Care System has 40 medical doctors on staff, a roster of 20 consulting medical physicians, 12 dentists, a
mobile medical van and a regional alliance with three other hospitals. Never losing sight of its mission to deliver
progressive healthcare to its citizens, the Health Care System is always a step ahead in offering Laurens County a
full spectrum of lifelong care.
Good Shepherd Free Medical Clinic provides free medical care to citizens who are without private insurance,
government assistance or the financial resources to afford such care. The clinic is staffed by volunteers and
funded by several other sources, including private donations.
The Whitten Center, located in Clinton, is the South Carolina Department of Disabilities and Special Needs’
largest residential services facility for those individuals with mental retardation or behavioral problems.
Senior Options is a private, nonprofit agency focusing on serving the needs of senior adults in order to delay the
need for nursing home care. Senior Options relies on support from the county, donations from the community
and volunteer support.
The Laurens County Health Department and Laurens County Department of Social Services provide numerous
health-related programs, from training to temporary aid for limited-income families.

including Bailey Manor, Langston House, Martha Franks Baptist Retirement Center, NHC Healthcare,

LCHCS OUTPATIENT CENTER
The Laurens County Hospital opened a new $10 million, 45,000-square-foot outpatient center in May 2003. The
new center, adjacent to the hospital, has three floors. The new addition will house radiology; a women’s center;
nuclear medicine; physical, respiratory and occupational therapies; outpatient registration; patient waiting rooms;
and cardiopulmonary services. Two new operating rooms in the expansion bring the hospital’s total to six.
