UBC writing class in Nelson
Sept. 25-26, Oct. 9-10; Oct. 23-24
and Nov. 6-7
Starting this September, the
University of B.C. will offer in Nelson
a creative writing course focused on
community that will help students
develop their skills in writing nonfiction, fiction, poetry and drama.
UBC’s course will be the first university writing course offered in Nelson
since the closing of David Thompson
University Centre in 1984.
The course, “Writing from the
Ground Up,” will be held over four
weekends. During September, October
and November the instructor of UBC’s
course also will be available to the Nelson
community as the Nelson Rotary UBC
writer-in-residence, providing advice and
feedback about writing and publishing to
local area residents and schools. Nelson
Rotary last month donated $1,000
towards the costs of the writer-in-residency portion of UBC’s offering.

Nelson Fire Rescue: uphill house fire
At 10:45 p.m. on Wednesday, May
20 the Nelson Fire Rescue Services
responded to a report of smoke, flames
and embers coming from the front of a
house in uphill. Both on duty members
responded immediately with four additional members responding from home.
The Nelson Police Department was
first to arrive on scene and observed
the fire beside and on the front porch.
They were able to get close enough
to discharge a portable dry chemical fire extinguisher which knocked
down some of the fire. The first
arriving crew’s primary objective was
to ensure that the fire had not spread
to the inside of the structure and that
all occupants of the house were out
and accounted for. There was a considerable amount of smoke inside the
structure and fire crews needed to set
up large fans to exhaust as much as
possible. Crews were able to completely extinguish the fire before it
spread to the inside of the house.
The fire appears to have originated
in the area of the front porch, and only
damaged the exterior.
Nelson Fire Rescue responded to
the incident with two fire engines, and
one utility vehicle. No injuries were
reported as a result of this incident.
Damage is estimated at $5000. The
cause of the fire is still under investigation.

My Opinion

Getting into the Entertainment Industry (The Struggle)
In not just movies but
as an industry, entertainment people inspire us.
Not many of us know the manpower and the hours spent on all of our
favorite movies and the sacrifices
that go into making them. The path
to getting into this industry, however, is difficult.
A lot of getting into any industry
is your connections. Depending on
who you know, it may make the
whole process easier or harder. Also
having a relevant education helps
- film studies or acting classes are
important. One of the most important aspects honestly is luck, as it’s
a tough industry to get into and
an even harder one to succeed in.
Make sure you can take criticism as
well. If you have a hard time fixing
your mistakes, it may not be worth
the effort.
Perhaps you plan on being a
screenwriter? Having writing experience is a must, as well as many of
the other skills I listed previously.
If you do get into the industry prepare for long hours, as it’s quite a
grueling line of work.
