COMPARATIVE EVALUATION between PROPELLERS DUC FLASH / E-PROPS DURANDAL XL Session 1 Tests made the 9th of August on Sisteron's airfield (LFNS) Aircraft : G1 ultralight Engine : ROTAX 912 S reducer ratio 1:2,43 Brand DUC HELICES HELICES E-PROPS Model FLASH DURANDAL XL 3 3 Blades # Diameter 1,90 m 1,90 m inox Inconel Nanostrenght® resin Comparison FLASH DURANDAL XL value % Propeller's weight 4,6 kg 2,9 kg 1,7 kg 37 % Usefull static thrust [a] 200 kg 214 kg 14 kg Leading edge protection Take-off distance gain Ø mini of the spinner GAIN 7% 11% 280 mm [b] 150 mm [c] [a] static thrust measured on the aircraft @ 5.400 RPM, then calculated at standard atmosphere 0m altitude. In these conditions, the aircraft's drag in the propeller slipstream represents 40 kg. [b] it means new engine hoods for many aircraft [c] diameter compatible with all existing engine hoods This technical comparison has been established between the DUC FLASH propeller and the E-PROPS DURANDAL XL. Results : - usefull thrust : 14 kg more for the DURANDAL XL compare to the FLASH. The take-off distance of the G1 decreases of 11% - DURANDAL XL is 1,7 kg lighter compare to the FLASH. All spinners can be installed with the DURANDAL XL. Interests : Higher thrust = lower take-off distance and best rate of climb = more security Essential for some flights : mountains, towing gliders Lighter propeller : important for some aircraft and ultralights; allows to optimize centre of gravity position Hélices E-PROPS - www.e-props.fr SARL ELECTRAVIA - SIRET : 508 086 626 00027 RCS Manosque - TVA : FR 47508086626 Aérodrome de Sisteron – 04200 VAUMEILH (France) Phone : +33 (0) 4 92 34 00 00 - Email : [email protected] ULM G1 912S with DUC FLASH ULM G1 912S with E-PROPS DURANDAL XL Hélices E-PROPS - www.e-props.fr SARL ELECTRAVIA - SIRET : 508 086 626 00027 RCS Manosque - TVA : FR 47508086626 Aérodrome de Sisteron – 04200 VAUMEILH (France) Phone : +33 (0) 4 92 34 00 00 - Email : [email protected] COMPARATIVE EVALUATION between PROPELLERS DUC FLASH / E-PROPS DURANDAL 100 - L Session 2 This technical comparison has been established between the DUC FLASH propeller and the E-PROPS DURANDAL XL. Tests made the 4th of December on Sisteron's airfield (LFNS) Aircraft : G1 ultralight Engine : ROTAX 912 S reducer ratio 1:2,43 QNH : 1027 T° : 17°C Brand DUC HELICES HELICES E-PROPS Model FLASH DURANDAL 100 - L Blades number Diameter Leading edge protection Total weight Pitch (a) 3 3 1,85 m 1,80 m inox Inconel resin Nanostrenght® 4,7 kg 2,8 kg 26° 18,5° (a) Both propellers have their pitch adjusted to have the same static RPM COMPARATIVE RPM AND MAX SPEED Propellers FLASH RPM DURANDAL 100 - L Speed (km/h) RPM RPM 0 5 490 5 460 Take-off 100 5 310 5 220 Max in level flight 190 5 700 Max in level flight 195 Static 5 550 The better efficiency of the DURANDAL allows to obtain a maximum speed in level flight of 195 km/h, it means 5 km/h more than with the FLASH. This gain of 5 km/h = 2,6% of maximum speed, represents an efficiency 8% better for the DURANDAL compare with the FLASH. The "constant speed" effect of the DURANDAL allows to obtain 195 km/h with 150 RPM less than with the FLASH at 190 km/h. FLASH DURANDAL 100 - L Climb rate RPM ft/min 5 220 750 100 km/h 5 310 Climb rate ft/min 722 120 km/h 5 370 732 5 250 769 140 km/h 5 430 556 5 310 667 Speed RPM The DURANDAL has a better climb rate than the FLASH on all the speed range. The most important difference appears at 140 km/h climbing full power. The Vz with the DURANDAL is 667 ft/min against 556 ft/min for the FLASH, it means a 20% better climb rate. The DURANDAL have a 20% better climb rate with minus 120 RPM than the FLASH. Note : at this speed of 140 km/h, the FLASH needs 120 RPM more than the DURANDAL. An aircraft with a DURANDAL needs less fuel than with a FLASH : about 0,5 liter/hour at max speed. Hélices E-PROPS - www.e-props.fr SARL ELECTRAVIA - SIRET : 508 086 626 00027 RCS Manosque - TVA : FR 47508086626 Aérodrome de Sisteron – 04200 VAUMEILH (France) Phone : +33 (0) 4 92 34 00 00 - Email : [email protected] In conclusion : On the G1 ultralight, the 8% better efficiency of the DURANDAL allows to obtain a maximum speed in level flight of 195 km/h : it means 5 km/h more than with the FLASH. The "constant speed" effect of the DURANDAL allows to obtain 195 km/h with 150 RPM less than with the FLASH at 190 km/h. The DURANDAL propeller has better performances than the FLASH propeller on all the speed range : climb rate, max speed, fuel consumption. After 120 km/h, the difference becomes more important between both propellers in favour of DURANDAL, because the efficiency of the FLASH collapses. The DURANDAL has a 20% better climb rate than the FLASH. That's important for security and also to reduce noise. An aircraft with a DURANDAL needs less fuel than with a FLASH : about 0,5 liter/hour at max speed. The DURANDAL is 40% lighter than the FLASH.
