The top prizes in this event had a prize package including round trip airfare for two, accommodations and food and beverage at The Venetian Resort in Las Vegas, and entry into one of The Venetian Poker Room tournaments. Rabbi & the Winner Michelle Ashby National Basketball Association superstar, and local Daytona Beach personality (Mainland High School), Vince Carter attended the event, signed many autographs, and played poker. Vince, who is opening his local restaurant on LPGA Blvd in late 2009, also provided food samples to the poker players of some of the menu items planned for his restaurant. About 275 people played in our DEEP STACK tournament. The tournament started at about 1:15 pm and ended just before midnight. The regular Poker Room staff handled the poker play and managed the tournament from start to finish. Everything was well organized and executed, and conducted in a professional atmosphere. All the poker players enjoyed themselves. Rabbi Kane and Scott Frank were our Co-Chairs for this event. Many congregants participated in the advance work prior to the event and at the tournament itself. Congratulations to Rabbi and Scott and all others who contributed to the success of this event. Work well done! David Kane With the Venetian Deep Stack Charity Classic Porker tournament behind us we have gained some responsibilities as a result of our success. This month we will begin a three month service project to send goods to our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. As you are aware, we had a very successful drive for a unit in Iraq two years ago. With the help of some of the local churches, I believe that we will have a significant amount of goods to ship to our service men and women. I have two requests: 1) Since we will have enough goods for more than one unit in each country, please let me know if you have a relative stationed in Iraq or Afghanistan so that we can send some of the goods to his or her unit. 2) Since the end of our three month period coincides with the high holidays, I will need two or three people to help me co-ordinate our collections and shipments. This project starts a new era in the future of Congregation B’nai Torah. Every three months we will work together on some worthy project because, our faith requires us to “do Justice”. Do you know what the Hebrew root for the word justice has become in today's Judaism? The word is tzedakah. Within the next few weeks I will send out a list from our military units of the kinds of goods they need and which we will be collecting. I’m looking forward to working with all of you on this worthy project. Rabbi Kane PS: Don’t forget to attend services during July and August. PPS: Remember to RSVP for the CBT Summer Splash Pool Party at the Kane’s on Sunday July 5th 2-5 (call Vicki 672-1174) Message from the co-Presidents: Norman Feldman & Alan Rabin Summer has arrived in central Florida. I guess you can tell by the 90 degree plus weather and the almost unbearable heat index. Luckily for us, the air conditioning for Shabbat services keeps us cool. With so many congregants away, we are asking that you try to make a commitment to attend two Shabbat morning services so that we have a minyan. As someone once said. “Try it, You’ll like it.” These past weeks since Alan and I have become co-presidents, we have been busy with the successful fund raising projects concert and charity poker tournament. We have begun planning for the rest of the year and all committees are busy with their projects. We would like to thank Marvin Schild, Bruce Barenbaum, Scott Frank, the Rabbi, Melanie Dolan and all the members who worked above and beyond to get us off to a great start. From the comments we have heard, both events were well received and everyone had a good time. Our newest Bat Mitzvah, Chelsea Cohen led services and chanted beautifully. We now look forward to Luke Haberman’s Bar Mitzvah in August. Looking to the future, the High Holidays are less than three months away. Please respond positively when Harvey Singer calls to ask you to participate in the services. Alan and I are available to answer any questions you may have concerning B’nai Torah and welcome your input and involvement in our congregation. In between all our meetings Harvey Singer and I managed to paint the school building. Take a peek when you come to services over the weekend. Hey, you know what? We are looking for a few good men or women who like to paint interior walls and are willing to help with sprucing up the school and office building. Please contact Norman Feldman (386-437-8142) or Vicki in the office (672-1174) if you wish to volunteer. We need your help ! Hope everyone has a happy, healthy & fun filled summer. Lynn Hartman CHOIR MEMBERS NEEDED Do you like to sing? If so, the CBT Choir needs you, especially if you can sing either tenor or bass. (We'll be happy with extra altos and sopranos too!) For various reasons some of our choir members will not be able to participate in the Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur services this year. We sincerely want to enhance these services with beautiful choir music. So, please, if you'd like to join us give Sue Abel (672-0403)or Diane Beitscher (672-7826) a call. Buildings & Grounds Committee Report , From Harvey Singer, Chair Ongoing grounds care and building maintenance continues. Building systems continue to function normally. The exterior cleanup and painting of our Office & School Building has been completed. Thanks to Norman Feldman, the building exterior was pressure washed and painted. The interior will be done next, probably painting the hallway area first. Some touch-up painting was also done on the Temple exterior. RECYCLE ALERT!!! His comment was "You must read this as the book is so gripping that I could not put it down. As a book lover, you, too, will also feel that way. How can one exist without books?" So, I borrowed the book, finding that his words were indeed true. It was my companion for weeks. does laundry for wealthy people in exchange for a pittance, but it goes a long way as she knows how to make even the smallest amount into pots of soup. One day she is outside and sees books being burned. She sneaks near the fire and pulls out a book, hiding it behind her blouse. This book becomes a friend as she reads it, chapter by chapter to the young man, using a candle for light. It also keeps the young man alive as it gives him something to look forward too. And so she starts sneaking into the Mayor's library and other places for more books. There are so many stories within this book as you learn about the backgrounds of many people. It also makes you realize that books can be friends when there is no one else. We don't have this book in our library, but it can be found in the public library along with the author's other 3 books. I greatly appreciated reading this book and feel like The Book Thief whenever I'm traveling through a book. Do enjoy reading Books make good friends. Jean Leonard. The former President, Lynne G. Ritter, gave words of welcome to the audience and gave thanks to many people especially Ray and Gloria Max who work very hard making a difference for people in this community. Mayor Fred Costello released the old board and installed the new board. Marian Kohen, was installed as the New President for 2009-2010. She gave an inspirational speech vowing to reach out to the community and let them know that this Federation might be small but we accomplish many things. Gloria Max, the Executive Director, reiterated all the accomplishments that the Federation did during the past year. She told the audience that the need has increased many times over and she was thankful that her husband, Ray, came on board to take care of the food bank, exclusively. Reports were given by Treasurer, Richard Blum, Miriam SimonCampaign Report, Marian Kohen –Social Service Report and the Endowment Report was given by Michael Furman. The entertainment was superb especially when Harry Burney sang “Old Man River": An added bonus was when Mimi Doliner, daughter of Barbara & Dr.. Stuart Doliner spoke about the late Holocaust Survivor Asia Doliner, how upbeat she was considering what she went through during the Holocaust. Mimi spoke how optimistic Asia was and how she continued to speak at any school about the horrors of the holocaust and that we should never take our freedoms for granted. Then she spoke about the magical flute that was willed to her from her great aunt Asia. This flute was owned by Asia’s husband Joe and it saved him from the gas chambers because Joe was in a special band that played when the Red Cross visited the so called good treatment camps. What a deception this was, but it saved Joe’s life. Asia knew that Amanda would lovingly take care of this flute and Mimi overwhelmed the crowd with her playing Asia’s favorite song Of-en Pripichuck. Jackie Flavio, daughter of Harriette and Chuck Flavio displayed her artistic talent in the lobby of the Temple. Two beautiful young ladies that make us proud. Plaques were given to Rabbi Steven David Kane for continuing the annual walk-a-thon which raises much needed funds to help the Jerry Food Pantry. We also want to thank Sue Abel for being a fantastic Secretary Gloria couldn't do without her. Marilyn FreedmanRefreshment Chairman with her workers Ada Siegel and Joan Meres did a great job with the refreshments.
