Dear Friends of Saint Dominic Academy,
By the time you read this newsletter, the long, cold
winter of 2014 will be just a memory. I hope that all of you made it through
without major disruption to your daily lives or damage to your homes.
Unfortunately, the Academy did experience some significant damage to the
ceiling of our chapel, due to accumulated snow and ice on the flat roof above
it. Fortunately, the stained glass windows, which had just been restored and
replaced last fall, escaped any damage.
In this issue you will be reading about our scholarship program which
provides the gift of an SDA education to countless young ladies, whose
families could never afford the full tuition without some aid. The program also
supports our academic merit scholarships, which are awarded to young ladies
of exceptional academic achievement. These two programs are made possible
by friends like you – true believers in the education of young women in the
timeless tradition of the Sisters of Saint Dominic. On behalf of all of them,
whose lives have been transformed by your generosity, I wish to thank you.
As part of our 135th Anniversary celebratory year, we have compiled a very
special list of all our donors who have supported the Annual Fund over the
past 30 years (the age of our database). This list, which is included in this
newsletter, names the donors who made at least five gifts to the Annual Fund
in the last 30 years. It does not include gifts and contributions made to the
Academy for other purposes, although we have a record of those gifts and are
most grateful for them. We are focusing on the Annual Fund in this special
report to show you what a significant part the Fund plays in our fundraising
program. So -- look for your name – you might not realize just how many
times you said “yes” to the Academy when you received that appeal. Our hope
is that reading about the ways donors to our scholarship program are changing
lives, more of you will be inspired to join this special group of “friends of
SDA.”
As we move into spring, I look forward to greeting many of you at our all-class
Alumnae Reunion Weekend in May.

whose mission consists of feeding the
hungry, clothing the naked, healing the
sick, comforting the aged, and
sheltering the homeless. She served on
several boards for Catholic education
including 12 years on the SDA Board of
Trustees. In 2012, the Academy
honored Marie with the Dominican
Pillar Award at the SDA Leadership
Awards Gala. In her acceptance speech,
Marie asked the audience to continue
to remember those less fortunate.

Due to the generosity of many, SDA
awards over $400,000 to our students
each year. Some of this support is
funded by foundations such as the
Turrell Fund, The Scholarship Fund
for Inner-City Children and The
William E. Simon Foundation. Other
scholarships come from individual
donations and others are initiated
with bequests such as the most recent
one left to SDA by the late Dr. Marie
Varley ‘56 (See sidebar story on page
1).

known as Sister Barbara Krug.
“Catholic education in a setting that
encourages young women to be their
best is as vital as ever, but its cost has
become out of reach for too many
who could benefit,” says Susan. “The
legacy of SDA will only be assured if
we, whose lives have been influenced
by what we experienced here, support
it. I’m blessed to be able to honor a
Sister who had such an impact on
me.”
Out of our enrollment of 301
students, more than 50% receive
some form of scholarship whether
financial aid, academic merit or
legacy grants where daughters and
granddaughters of alumnae receive a
tuition discount. Dollar amounts for
scholarships range from $500 to
$8,500, and for some of our families
that amount is the difference between
sending their daughter to SDA or to
their town’s public school. Years ago,
some local churches paid the SDA
tuition for the children of the parish.
Today, there are very few parishes
that have an open Catholic grammar
school in Jersey City. While SDA’s
current tuition of $10,440 may be 10
or even 20 times the amount paid by
some families decades ago, the
amount is still less than the actual cost
($11,800) to educate each student at
SDA. Thus, even families who do not
receive any type of scholarship are
basically receiving a discount of
$1,360 per student.
Marie was a committed fundraiser for
the Caldwell Dominican Sisters and
SDA. As a volunteer caller for the SDA
Phonathon, Marie would talk to
hundreds of alumnae asking for their
support. When anyone would counter
Marie’s request with, “I wasn’t on
scholarship, why should I support the
school,” Marie would answer, “We
were all on scholarship as the
Dominican Sisters paid part of our
tuition with their blood, sweat and
tears!” Marie usually got the donation.
Marie was always grateful for the many
blessings she received during her life
including the love of friends and
family, her strong faith, and the love of
God and the Blessed Mother. Her belief
in giving back continues in her death
not only with the Varley Scholarship
and by donating her body to medical
research, but in the lives of those she
served.
“Charging that extra $1,360 might be
the straw that breaks the camel’s back
for some of our families,” says SDA
Head of School Barbara Griffin. “We
do our best to keep tuition as
affordable as possible, but we know
that our tuition at just over $10,000 is
a stretch for some of our families. Our
scholarship fundraising efforts have
been critical to bridging that gap for
each student.”

John Nagel was recently named Hudson County
Indoor Track Coach of the Year by the Hudson
County Track Coaches Association. John led the
Blue Devils to their 10th county crown in the last
11 years during the county championships in
January.

Paulette Buczynski Sakariassen ‘68 was all smiles when her SDA ring was returned to her
after 45 years. While dating George Martin, brother of Patricia Martin Jaz ‘68, in high
school, Paulette gave George her high school ring, a sign that they were “going steady” at the
time. After they broke up months later, Paulette forgot about the ring. Fast forward 45 years
later, when George‘s now wife, Cathy, found the ring in his belongings recently and made it
a point to return the ring to its rightful owner.

scholarships as well as a few for
students who have particular gifts to
share with the community. Several
scholarships have been established via
the “Fund a Scholar” segment from
the Leadership Awards Gala held each
year. During this live auction event,
donations of $100 to $10,000 have
totaled over $80,000 for the last three
years.
“Everyone knows education is key to
one’s success and when people see
their donations being put to good
use, they want to help more,” says
Kate Lillis-Magnus ‘83, SDA
Advancement Director. “After our
guests hear from one of the
scholarship recipients at the Gala,
they see first-hand how their support
impacts a young woman and they
eagerly raise their hands during our
“Fund a Scholar” auction.”
Donors to “Fund a Scholar” include
Ellen Meagher Teresi ‘72 and
husband Joe who learned about the
auction during a Florida Reunion in
2012 and pledged a $100,000 gift over
ten years. “I’m grateful to be in a
position to help young women build
a strong foundation for their lives,”
said Ellen. “The education I received

and the friendships I formed at SDA
have been such an important piece of
my life. Contributing to SDA’s
scholarship fund is my way of helping
to provide that same experience to
others.”
Retired public school educators,
Karen and Peter Fischbach have
attended the Gala for the past several
years and have generously donated to
the “Fund a Scholar” auction. “We
believe that Saint Dominic Academy
plays a vital role in educating and
empowering young girls to achieve
their lifelong goals,” said Mrs.
Fischbach. “As we have found the
importance of education in realizing
our goals, it is our sincere hope that
the contributions made to “Fund a
Scholar” will provide opportunities
for young girls to reach theirs.”
SDA Admissions Director Andrea
Villani Apruzzese ‘75 is especially
grateful for these scholarships, as it
helps in her recruitment efforts. She
states, “We receive quite a number of
scholarship applications each year
and the decision making process is a
daunting one. So many applicants are
very gifted and talented and in need
of financial assistance. We are blessed
by the generosity of the many donors
that help make the SDA dream
possible for girls who might not have
had the chance to receive this
outstanding education.”
“When you look at the education
statistics locally with regard to cost vs.
reward, we feel an SDA education is a
bargain comparatively speaking,”
says Mrs. Griffin. “While our tuition
is just over $10,000, we feel it’s a
reasonable investment in a young girl
who will pay it back tenfold in the
woman she becomes after her four
years here or now, with our 7th & 8th
grades, after six years of being within
the SDA environment.”
"The opportunities I’ve been given
and experiences I’ve had at Saint
Dominic Academy would never have
been possible without my reception
of this scholarship,” says Catherine
Banach ‘14, a senior from Nutley
receiving the Mary Griffin ‘41 Spirit
Award Scholarship. “The educational
and athletic opportunities that were
made available to me at Saint
Dominic Academy have given me a
great foundation for discovering my
passion and building a career as I
enter college in the next few months.
I am hopeful that I will be continuing
my education at another great
institution, Brown University, in the
fall."
