The Mokena of today came to fruition with the advent of the Rock Island Railroad. In 1851, surveyors from the
railroad laid the foundation for the right of way tracks that would ultimately travel through current-day Mokena.
During the building of the railroad, a station and a hotel/tavern were constructed to accommodate workers,
establishing the beginnings of the soon-to-be fledgling Village. The settlement began to grow, with a population
reaching 500 by 1878. The town of Mokena—the derivation of which is unclear to this day—was officially
incorporated as a Village in 1880.
Since that time, Mokena has transformed into a prosperous community of 20,336 (2008 estimate)—a number
projected to reach 23,983 by 2013. The Village has continued to experience tremendous organized growth in the
way of new residential, commercial and industrial developments—all the while remaining a connected
community living by the Village’s motto, “Planned Progress and Pleasant Living.”
The Village is well removed from the congestion of Chicago’s urban lifestyle, providing residents with quiet

The Mokena Community Park District is the community’s leading recreational source, covering more than 20
square miles and maintaining more than 230 acres of park space. The park district operates 18 park sites and
facilities, including the historic 115-acre Yunker Farm. Amenities found throughout these park sites include
basketball courts, tennis courts, playground equipment, roller hockey rinks, walking/jogging trails and sand
volleyball courts, along with the outdoor Skate Park at Grasmere Park and the nationally accredited Oaks Disc
Golf Course. The 35-acre, PDGA-rated course spans 27 holes and is ranked among the top five courses in the
country.
The disc golf course can be found just behind the extensive Oaks Recreation & Fitness Center. This premier
facility houses a 22,000-square-foot field house equipped with three multi-use courts, a 1 1/2-mile indoor
walking track, dance and group exercise rooms, three multi-purpose rooms, the Acorn Room Child Care center
and an assortment of fitness programs and health services.
The programming afforded through the Mokena Community Park District is just as outstanding as these facilities.
Residents of all ages, interests and skill levels can take advantage of more than 300 programs and activities
throughout the year. Arts & Crafts, early childhood education, gymnastics, summer camps, sports, leagues and
dance are among some of the choices. The park district also hosts an assortment of popular community events,
such as the Halloween Hollow, a Fourth of July celebration, Farm and Barn Fest, Movies and Concerts in the
Park and more.
Outdoor enthusiasts have direct access to the Hickory Creek Forest Preserve, a 1,800-acre area stretching through
the communities of Mokena, Frankfort and New Lenox. Overseen by the Forest Preserve District of Will County,
Hickory Creek Junction provides access to both the 19.9-mile Old Plank Road Trail and the Hickory Creek
Byway–West Branch. Also within the preserve is the site of the Environmental Learning Center, which provides

The mix of shopping opportunities is expanding within Mokena, with establishments ranging from smaller
locally-owned shops to sprawling retail centers along major corridors such as La Grange Road, 191st Street, U.S.
Route 30 and Wolf Road.
The newest and biggest development to hit Mokena is the new Mokena Marketplace, a 430,000-square-foot area
located at the southwest corner of Wolf Road and U.S. Route 30. JCPenney was the site’s earliest tenants,
becoming the community’s first department store. Meijer is opening within the Mokena Marketplace as well,
spanning a space of 200,000 square feet. A number of smaller establishments will joint these two powerhouses,
making Mokena Marketplace a prominent shopping destination in the area.
Located within the 130,000-square-foot Mokena Town Square Shopping Center, the 38,000 square feet of space
at Brookhaven Marketplace offers a great retail selection. The center can be found at the northwest corner of La
Grange and La Porte Roads. Old Mill Pond is teeming with mixed-use space, housing retail shops, offices and
townhomes. The development boats 37,000 square feet of space anchored by Fox’s on Wolf, Clock Tower Gifts
and Dunkin’ Donuts. And with the progress of downtown Mokena, even more retail options will be made
available to shoppers.
While perusing the improving downtown area, make time to stop at the French Market on Front Street. Held
every Saturday from late April through October (8 a.m. to 1 p.m.), the French Market hosts the best of
Midwestern vendors. Shoppers are invited to browse through fresh fruits and vegetables, gourmet foods, baked
goods, cut and dried flowers, handmade items, jewelry and even more quality goods. Unique features found at
Mokena’s Market include European-style canopies and a number of special events for all ages to enjoy.

The educational opportunities afforded to residents of Mokena are exceptional, playing quite a significant role in
drawing new families and businesses to the community. From early education through graduate-level learning,
Mokena has access to it all. The outstanding academic curriculum provided through the area’s educational
resources is fused with a number of specialized programs and plenty of extracurricular activities, making for an
all-around learning experience for students of all ages and abilities.
Several options for early childhood education and childcare are located within Mokena, notably Little Blossom
Early Education, St. John’s Christian Preschool, Immanuel Ev. Lutheran Preschool and Triple R. Child Care. The
majority of students entering primary school attend Mokena School District 159, a pre K-8th grade district
composed of three main facilities. Mokena Elementary School serves pre K-3rd grade, while Mokena
Intermediate School enrolls 4th and 5th graders and Mokena Junior High School offers education for grades 6th8th. The Lincoln-Way Area Special Education District 843 provides administrative and educational support to six
school districts, including District 159. Additional primary school districts serving portions of Mokena include
Frankfort School District 157-C, New Lenox School District 122 and Summit Hill School District 161. For
parochial alternatives at the elementary level, residents can attend either St. Mary Catholic School or the Noonan
Elementary Academy.
Currently, Lincoln-Way Community High School District 210 is comprised of three campuses: Lincoln-Way
Central, Lincoln-Way East and the new Lincoln-Way North. Enrollment continues to increase, and the district is
ready to meet the need for further space. In 2001, Lincoln-Way High School became two separate high schools
following a multi-million dollar project, establishing the Lincoln-Way Central and Lincoln-Way East campuses.
In 2006, a $225 million building bond referendum was approved for the construction of two four-year high
schools, each with the capacity to accommodate 2,500 students. The newly constructed Lincoln-Way North was
part of this referendum, opening its doors in fall of 2008. The second school is the still-developing Lincoln-Way
West, a campus that is set to open its doors in the fall of 2009.
Upon graduation from high school, many students choose to continue the learning path by enrolling in a higher
learning program. Residents have access to several colleges and universities within 20 miles of Mokena. These
campuses include Moraine Valley Community College (Palos Hills), Governors State University (University
Park), Lewis University (Romeoville & Tinley Park), University of St. Francis (Joliet), Prairie State College
(Chicago Heights) and South Suburban College (South Holland)—among numerous others throughout the
Midwest region. And for those looking to obtain a technology-oriented, career-focused degree, neighboring
Orland Park is home to a campus of ITT Technical Institute.

Mokena’s locality places it at the crossroads of commerce and industry, offering businesses of all sizes and types
a prime place to establish operations. The merits to relocating and expanding in Mokena are great, as the
Village’s business community is as diverse as they come. Some benefits businesses take advantage of include
Mokena’s rank as having the lowest municipal property tax of 23 communities in Will County, no local utility
taxes, the institution of superlative business-related organizations such as the Chamber of Commerce, proximity
to an intricate transportation network, plus emerging developments welcoming everything from retail endeavors
and office-based companies to manufacturing and industrial spaces.
Mokena’s downtown area is making advances, as the Village is researching for the perfect economic stimulus
plan. Village leaders are looking to incorporate a study of the downtown area, primarily around the Front Street
Metra Station, in order to determine the benefits of a transit-oriented development (TOD). The focus of the TOD
lies around the development of mixed-use property, bringing together new opportunities for businesses and
residents alike. The access to the Metra station proves quite beneficial to growth in the downtown area. A major
business choosing to locate to the central downtown district is Berkot’s Supermarket, which has already
expanded its space from 13,500 square feet to 25,000 square feet.
The new 430,000-square-foot Mokena Marketplace adds to the economic development list upon its completion.
JCPenney stands as one of the center’s main tenants, with the new 200,000-square-foot Meijer playing a large
role in the anchoring of the Mokena Marketplace as well. The center will generate around $1 million in sales tax
revenue and create approximately 800 further jobs. Additional commercial locations that have emerged in the
community include The Promenade at 191st Street, Mokena Mills in downtown Mokena, Old Mill Pond at 187th
Street and Wolf Road, and the expanding Mokena Corners along U.S. Route 30.
Another new indicator of economic growth in Mokena is the Corporate Corridors North development. Still under
construction, the 260-acre business park will include about two million square feet of building space, and will
ultimately create between 1,000 and 2,000 new jobs at its completion. While the park will primarily house
corporations and warehouse-distribution companies, its northwest corner will encompass retailers and
restaurants. M. Cooper Supply, a warehouse-distribution entity, became the first tenant of the park in November
of 2007, establishing an 80,000-square-foot facility on a six-acre lot. Zenith Administrators has plans to open a
35,000-square-foot space within Corporate Corridors North as well. This new facility will serve as the new
Midwest headquarters and will engage approximately 120 full-time employees. Further sites and facilities
designed to meet the demands of businesses needing space include the Mokena Industrial Park, LaGrange Ridge
Business Park, Mokena Crossings, the Olivieri Business Park, Corporate Corridors, Spring Lake Corporate
Center and Silo Creek Business Park.

The demand for high quality and convenient medical attention is readily met in Mokena, which is in proximity to
several major healthcare resources. In addition to the following hospitals and health centers serving Mokena are a
multitude of specialized practices and clinics, ranging from vision care, bone & joint surgeons, dermatology,
pediatrics and family practice to dentistry, physical rehabilitation, foot & ankle and obstetrics & women’s health.
For nearly 100 years, St. James Hospital and Health Centers have provided a wide range of healthcare services
and programs to the south suburban area. The hospital has transformed from a 50-bed, acute-care hospital to a
health system comprised of two campuses located in Olympia Fields and Chicago Heights.
Notable centers of excellence found through St. James include the renowned Heart and Vascular Institute, the
Patricia A. Joyce Comprehensive Cancer Institute (an approved Teaching Hospital Cancer Program), the Center
for Diabetes, the Center for Rehabilitative Medicine, the Center for Bariatric Surgery, the Joint Center and the
Health and Wellness Institute. What’s more, St. James operates an outpatient Surgery Center in Chicago Heights.
But the services certainly don’t end there, as patients also have access to emergency services, diagnostic imaging,
pain management, home health, occupational and environmental health and family care services. The network
also has several outpatient facilities located throughout the southern suburbs, including the St. James Community
Health Center of Mokena along La Grange Road. The center offers internal medicine, pediatrics, open MRI,
diagnostic imaging, physical therapy and diabetes services.
Silver Cross Hospital in Joliet is a highly acclaimed medical facility, recognized as a “100 Top Hospitals
National Award Winner” by Thomas Reuters Healthcare for four consecutive years (2004-2007)—one of only 15
hospitals in the U.S. to receive this honor four years in a row. The 304-bed, acute-care hospital is equipped with
2,500 dedicated physicians, employees and volunteers, and serves a host of communities within Will, Grundy
and southwestern Cook Counties. To meet the needs of the growing population, Silver Cross has invested in a
new $400 million replacement hospital in New Lenox—just three miles from the current campus. The 70-acre,
state-of-the-art campus will open in 2012 and will feature 289 private patient rooms, a new outpatient medical
services building and a physician office building, which is scheduled to open in 2009. Silver Cross also offers
eight satellite facilities and recently opened a 30,000-square-foot replacement medical center in Homer Glen.
Also in Joliet is Provena Saint Joseph Medical Center, a 475-bed facility providing a range of advanced
healthcare services and programs routinely discovered through a university hospital center. The medical center’s
partnership with the University of Illinois at Chicago has made Provena Saint Joseph the sole provider of
neurosurgical services in the region. Further prominent services accessed through the hospital include the Saint
Joseph Heart Center, Sister Theresa Cancer Care Center, Level II Emergency/Trauma Center, Neonatal ICU,
Pediatric ICU, Sleep Disorder Center and a host of additional services. A major renovation project is on-going
and will result in a new eight-story patient tower featuring all private rooms. The hospital has been widely
recognized for its outstanding services, and was recently awarded the HealthGrades’ 2008 Distinguished Hospital
Award for Clinical Excellence.
Advocate Health Care is a prominent resource in the region as well. The system operates four hospitals in the
region, including locations in Oak Lawn, Hazel Crest and two in Chicago, as well as a number of health centers.
Nearby Frankfort is home to an Advocate Health Center, a community-based physician group practice serving
babies through seniors.
Adding to the list of exceptional healthcare facilities is the presence of the esteemed Heart Care Centers of
Illinois (HCCI). Mokena is not only home to HCCI’s administrative center, but is also supplied with the HCCI

Mokena’s policy-making branch is comprised of the Village President (Mayor) and the six-person Board of
Trustees, all of whom are elected at-large to staggered, four-year terms. The Village also has a Village Clerk, a
position accountable for voter registration and record-keeping, and a Village Administrator, who is responsible
for all the daily functions of the Village. In addition, the Village has several commissions and committees, which
welcome volunteers from the community to participate. Board meetings are held the second and fourth Mondays
each month at 7 p.m. within Village Hall located at 11004 Carpenter Street.
The Village works diligently to provide the finest public services for residents, businesses and visitors. The
efforts of such departments as Public Works, Community Development, Emergency and Police ensure
community members receive the highest quality programs and resources—all designed to enhance the standard of
living in the community.

More than 150 years ago, Mokena’s early leaders saw the importance of establishing faith in the fledgling
settlement. Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church stands as one of the earliest places of worship in the
community, as do St. John’s United Church of Christ (initially the United German Evangelical Church of
Mokena upon opening in 1862) and St. Mary Catholic Church (with services beginning in 1864). Since then, the
worship community of Mokena has grown to include several diverse religious institutions, each offering plenty of
spiritual services and programs to their fellowships.
In addition to the rich spiritual sector of Mokena are a number of civic clubs and community organizations
designed to foster strong community ties, provide leadership and offer aid to those in need. What’s more, over
100 residents volunteer on various Village committees and commissions. These groups hold regularly scheduled
meetings and host a number of year-round, community-wide activities and events.
