Artist Hans de Castellane
Eldredge Park Painting Raffle
H
ans de Castellene,
a well-known local artist, grew up
on Cape Cod loving the Cape Cod
Baseball League. When he attended Nauset Middle School, he
played on the same field that hosts
the Orleans Firebirds. He attended Nauset High and went on to
Pratt Institute’s School of Art and
Design. His many murals are well
known across the Cape, including
one on the gymnasium wall of his
alma mater in North Eastham and another on the exterior wall of the Orleans Marketplace across from Dunkin Donuts.
Recently, de Castellane, who moved back to the Cape from Brooklyn
and opened a gallery in Dennisport, reached out to the Firebirds with
an offer. Raffle his painting of a Firebirds game at Eldredge Park to raise
needed money to help support the team.
All this season, Firebirds fans can purchase raffle tickets at home
games to take a chance on winning this beautiful framed 17" x 21" acrylic
on canvas painting valued at $3,400. There are also 8" x 10" replica tiles
available for purchase at the Home Plate Shop.

“As a kid watching the games, I was fascinated by the lights contrasted
with the night’s sky, so I wanted them to be a dominant part of the painting,” said de Castellane. “I depicted the people watching the game impressionistically, like Seurat. The infield dirt has a sandy texture, and the grass
is quilted as a tribute to all the fans who come out early with their blankets
to stake out space for the game.”
The entire painting’s view of the field is though you were a bird perched
on the scoreboard, and the outfielder’s number boasts “2,” de Castellane’s
lucky number.

Q. How do you approach
the process of putting a team
together?
the organization in a professional
way both on and off the field. Doing things the “right” way, being
respectful, and emphasizing the
tremendous opportunity we ALL
have to be in Orleans are the core
covenants of our organization.
This is, by far, the
most challenging part of the job.
However, putting a team together
every summer is the part I really
enjoy. I love watching every player take the field for the very first
time, knowing that it has been a
long process getting them to Orleans, and that each and every one
has earned the privilege of playing
in the Cape Cod Baseball League.
So, with that being said, this is
how we try to do it. Offensively,
we want a team that can produce
and score runs. Ideally, we want
a group that has a combination
of speed, power, high OBP’s, and
we love guys who walk more than
they strikeout. Defensively, we
want strength up the middle with
our catcher, second baseman,
shortstop, and centerfielder. On
the mound, we want a combination of lefties and righties who
have outstanding command.
Command is my #1 priority when
I look at a prospective pitcher.
Then, it’s a matter of defining
roles for everyone and putting our
players in situations where they
will be successful. More importantly, we want student/athletes
in Orleans who will represent
NICHOLSON
Q. When and how do you
start the process?
NICHOLSON The process of putting a team together is ongoing. I
receive phone calls, emails, and
texts year-round from people who
want to recommend players. Usually, I fill our roster by early fall for
the following summer. In other
words, the 2013 roster was set by
November of 2012. Right now, we
are acquiring names of potential
‘Birds for 2014.
Q. What do you look for in a
prospective player?
We want physically
talented and mentally tough players at every position. In addition,
an equally important quality we
look for in a player is his character. Is he a good student? Does
he have a good work ethic? Will
he be a good teammate? Does
he possess a good attitude? All of
these attributes are extremely important to our organization in the
recruiting process.

Q. What role does the college
coach play in helping you
secure a player?
The college coach
has the final say in where a player
ultimately winds up playing during the summer. I can ask about a
prospective player, but if the college coach doesn’t think he has
the ability to play on the Cape,
or does not want him going out
to play summer ball, for whatever
reason, Orleans isn’t getting him.
I rely heavily on their input, trust
them tremendously and value
their opinions.
The college coaches do an absolutely terrific job of sending the
Cape Cod Baseball League the
very best players college baseball
has to offer. It is evident every
year in the draft by the number of
players drafted that have played
in the Cape League. It was clearly
evident in last year’s World Series
as the San Francisco Giants had
eight or nine players that played in
the Cape League. Brandon Crawford, the shortstop for the Giants,
played in Orleans in 2007.
NICHOLSON
Q. Do you have a close
circle of college coaches and
contacts that you depend on?
NICHOLSON I do. Being from the
West Coast, I would like to think
Orleans has a really good relationship with all of the schools in
California. USC, UCLA, Loyola
Marymount, University of San
Diego, Long Beach State, San
Diego State, Cal State Fullerton,
and Pepperdine are all schools
that have been great to us in the
past. In addition, we have developed great relationships with the
coaching staffs at Arizona, Arizona State, Vanderbilt, Duke, Stony
Brook, North Carolina and Kent
State, just to name a few. Scouts
and agents also play a vital role
in helping us to identify and land
players in Orleans as well.
Q. Do you target specific
schools or conferences?
Not really. Orleans
is simply looking for the best possible players we can find that are
gifted physically, mentally, and
have great character. We do like
to see position players before they
come to the Cape, just to see how
they handle swinging a wood bat
for a summer.
Because of this, our roster in
Orleans will be made up primarily of players going into their junior seasons. It doesn’t mean that
rising sophomores can’t do it; it
just means that they have to be a
pretty special player to compete.
Marcus Stroman (’10,’11) - Duke,
Trevor Gott (’11,’12) - Kentucky,
and Brad Myers (’05) - LMU, are
three players who come to mind
who experienced tremendous
success in Orleans after their
freshman seasons in college. In
fact, all of them were Cape League
All-Stars, and they all pitched.
Needless to say, we recruit our
pitching staff a bit differently than
we do our position players. Playing the previous summer doesn’t
weigh as heavily in their recruitment process as it does with the
position players.
NICHOLSON
Q. What role does team
chemistry play, and how do
you factor this in?
I think team chemistry plays a role on every team in
sports. I feel pretty strongly that
chemistry and winning pretty
NICHOLSON
and the answer is pretty simple.
Whatever team asks for the player
first is usually going to get him.
However, every team on the Cape
has established working relationships with certain coaches and
universities, so those often play a
factor in the recruiting process as
well.
much go hand-in-hand. It seems
like teams that win have great
chemistry, and teams that have
great chemistry are winners.
Q. How do you balance your
team by position?
Typically, we’d like
four outfielders, three middle infielders, three corner guys, two
catchers and fourteen or fifteen
pitchers to start our season.
NICHOLSON
Q. What is the timing of the
entire process from identifying
players, to recruiting, to
soliciting commitments?
Q. How do you decide on
inviting returning players
either from our team or other
CCBL teams?
NICHOLSON I hear about players as early as their senior year
in high school, and it is usually
from a coach where that particular player has committed to go to
college. For the most part though,
I will not be contacted, nor will I
contact a coach, until a player has
entered college and starts to perform at a high level.
Various sources help to identify these future Cape Leaguers coaches, scouts, agents, advisors,
etc. - and I begin to compile a list of
potential Firebirds. I follow their
progress throughout their college
and summer seasons. Once I decide on a player I think we would
like to have, I contact his coach. If
that player is available, the coach
and I will discuss the possibility of
him coming to play in Orleans.
The college coach knows the
player’s ability and character way
better than I do. If he thinks his
player has the ability to be successful in Orleans and we both
agree that he will be a good “fit” in
Orleans, a contract is offered.
NICHOLSON We always try to be
loyal to players who have previously played in Orleans. If a player
comes to us after his freshman
year, we will almost always take
him back the following summer.
If a player has played for us after
“I feel strongly
that chemistry and
winning pretty much
go hand-in-hand.”
Manager Kelly Nicholson
his sophomore season and does
not get drafted the following June,
we will try to find him a spot on
our roster as well.
We normally don’t offer juniors
full contracts because of the risk
of them being drafted and signing. As for guys who have played
with other Cape League teams, we
would definitely consider them,
but that doesn’t happen very often, as other clubs are loyal to their
returning players as well.
Q. How do you handle
temporary invitations to
players?
Q. How is the actual player
contact handled...directly or
through the college coach?
Temporary contracts are normally offered to players after our roster is set and as insurance against players arriving in
Orleans after our season begins or
not arriving at all. With the College World Series ending in late
June, Team USA selections, injuries, summer school, and pitchers
getting shut down, there are a variety of reasons why players arrive
late or not at all.
NICHOLSON
NICHOLSON Contact with a player is always handled through the
coaches, because they ultimately
decide where their players will be
playing summer baseball.
Q. What happens if a player
is being recruited by multiple
teams?

Welcome to Eldredge Park - new copy coming
Welcome to Eldredge Park!
Home of the Orleans Firebirds
E
ldredge Park in Orleans
is the baseball home of
the Orleans Firebirds
of the Cape Cod Baseball League (CCBL). It
hosts 10 teams arranged in Eastern and Western divisions during
22 home games and – hopefully
– playoffs.
It’s a beautiful venue for baseball. All games are played under
the stars starting at 7 p.m. with
free admission and no reserved
seating. The field is “open” at all
times, so you may come early to
watch team preparations, enjoy
a picnic, relax on a blanket, shop
at the Home Plate Shop or simply
enjoy the beautiful setting with
family, friends and fans.
It’s a good idea to bring a blanket for ground cover and a sweatshirt or jacket for later on a cool
evening. No smoking or alcoholic
beverages are allowed. The park
is a family setting where parents
are expected to watch and control
their children while exhibiting the
highest levels of sportsmanship.
Firebirds’ players and coaches
are pleased to meet any and all
fans immediately after the game
on the field. Talk with the players, get their autographs and take
photos. Bring the 2013 Firebirds
Yearbook, a baseball, a Firebirds
cap or t-shirt for autographing.
Don’t forget a pen!
Try to have every player sign
your yearbook during the course
of the season. Many Orleans players have gone on to very successful major league careers.
You can learn more about the
players by talking with them,
reading their profiles in this yearbook or visiting the website at
orleansfirebirds.com.
In the fall of 2009, the Firebirds intiated an aggressive field
improvement project designed to
restore Eldredge Park – located
at the Nauset Regional Middle
School at the intersection of Rt.28
and Eldredge Parkway - as the premier venue for amateur summer
baseball.
To date, about $322,000 has
been spent on numerous improvements. The Firebirds received a
$150,000 grant from the Yawkey
Foundation to be matched by local financial support to enhance
the safety, entertainment value
and playing conditions of the
field.

Plans are currently in progress
to renovate and expand the Birds
Nest and Home Plate Shop behind the field back stop during the
fall of 2013. These recent and future improvements contribute to
the park’s value, which is owned
jointly by the Nauset school system and town of Orleans – all
without any cost to taxpayers.
The Firebirds is the only team
in the CCBL that has a private
field house and locker room,
which is in the Charles Moore
band shell. Maintained by the
team, it includes a kitchen, laundry facilities and coach’s office.
Unlike other teams, the Firebirds
have their uniforms cleaned by
the team.
During some games, and especially during the playoffs, as
many as 5,500 fans may watch a
Firebirds game. The team has led
the CCBL in attendance for many
years. In 2012, more than 50,000
fans attended Firebirds games at
Eldredge Park, which exceeds the
attendance at any other CCBL
venue by more than 30 percent.
The unique bowl construction
of Eldredge Park – combined with
its surrounding hillside terraces eliminates the need for bleachers,
and creates a most unique venue
to watch a game. P
Enjoy the game. See page 11.

C
oach Brown returns for his fifth summer
with the Firebirds. After spending a season
on the baseball staff of the University of Southern California as a volunteer assistant, he has
taken a teaching position at Palos Verdes High
School where he also is assistant varsity baseball coach.
Brown saw action as a catcher, first baseman, designated hitter and outfielder for USC
from 1994 to 1997, posting a career batting
average of .311 with 14 homers and 77 RBI.
C
oach Craig also is returning to Cape Cod
for his fifth season with the Firebirds. This
off season, he worked as a substitute teacher
and continued to mentor hitters in Southern
California and other locations around the
country. He continues to be invited as a guest
speaker to various baseball camps and Little
Leagues.
A native of San Diego, Craig spent the first
three years of his collegiate career as a switchhitting outfielder for the UCLA Bruins before
C
assidy Olson is joining the Firebirds staff
this year. He has just completed his fourth
season as head varsity baseball coach at Mira
Costa High School in Manhattan Beach, California.
A three-sport letterman in baseball, football
and basketball for Miramonte High School,
he played football as a freshman at UCLA and
walked onto the baseball team, remaining all
four years and helping the Bruins to the 1997
College World Series. In his senior year, he
“It seems like teams that win have great chemistry, and teams that have great chemistry are winners.”
Manager Kelly Nicholson
He earned All-PAC 10 honorable mention as
a senior, while hitting .368 with 10 home runs
and 45 RBI. In 1995, he was part of the Trojan squad that made its first trip to the College
World Series.
He signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers as
an undrafted free agent in 1997 and played in
the Dodgers’ system until 2000, when he went
on to play another eight seasons in the farm
systems of the Tampa Bay Rays, Philadelphia
Phillies, Pittsburgh Pirates, Montreal Expos
and New York Yankees.
Brown made the switch to coaching in 2009
as a varsity assistant coach at his alma mater,
Palos Verdes High School. He holds a degree in
business administration from USC.
Coach Brown will take over as the Firebirds
pitching coach in 2013. P
transferring to Loyola Marymount for his senior season. He was selected in the 19th round
of the 1997 Major League draft by the Cincinnati Reds and played for its Burlington Bees affiliate and later the Houston Astro’s Kissimmee
Cobras minor league team.
Coach Craig played for several independent
teams, and he homered from both sides of the
plate in the same game three times. During his
professional career, he accumulated 108 home
runs over 10 seasons. He started his coaching
career at Cal State Los Angeles, and was the hitting coach at Grossmont High School for two
seasons, reaching the CIF finals in both years
and winning the title in 2010.
Craig holds a bachelor’s degree in history
from UCLA, where he has worked in their
winter and high school showcase camps since
2000 as he strives toward his ultimate goal of
coaching at the collegiate or professional level.
This year, Coach Craig will be our primary
hitting coach and will run the offense. P
batted .304 with 10 HR and 47 RBI and was
named First-Team Academic All PAC 10.
After UCLA, Olson played two years of independent minor league baseball in Reno, Nevada and St. Louis. He arrived at Mira Costa as
a social studies and geography teacher in 2003,
and served as head junior varsity coach before
leaving briefly to take the varsity jobs at Redondo Union and Harbor Junior College.
Cassidy has masters degrees in sports psychology and education. He and his wife, Daniela, live with their 2-year-old son Marco in
Hermosa Beach, California.
Coach Olson will be working primarily with
hitters and infielders. We wish him much success in his first season as a Firebird. P

Q&A...CONTINUED FROM PG7
A player who is playing under
a temporary contract is on our
roster until the full contract player
that he is replacing arrives. Once
he arrives, the temporary player
must be released. However, if a full
contract player never arrives in Orleans, I can then offer a temporary
player a full contract, which guarantees him a final roster spot. This
Q. What factors into the final
roster decisions on July 1?
happens just about every summer.
In fact, in 2011, Ben Waldrip
from Jacksonville State and Matt
Duffy from Long Beach State,
arrived in Orleans on temporary contracts. Long story short,
BOTH of these guys got full contracts and both wound up starting
in the All-Star Game in Fenway
Park – an incredible story!
We, the coaching
staff, do not have to make decisions on the players who are under a full contract. They are guaranteed to be with us all summer.
However, if we do have full contract guys that will not be arriving
in Orleans, then we have to decide

on which temporary players to
keep. When making these decisions, which are often difficult, we
simply try to keep the guys on our
roster who will make our team the
very best it can be. P

A former batboy and current intern shares
How the Firebirds
teach discipline,
compassion and teamwork
BY NATHAN GARRAN
M
y name is Nathan Garran, and I joined the then-Orleans Cardinals organization in 2005. As a young boy,
my parents brought me to Cardinal games a few times
over the summer. My fondest memories are eating ice
cream from the concession stand and playing catch
with my father along the third-base line.
I was too young then to realize I often was standing just feet away from
future stars such as Lance Niekro and Mark Teixeira.
In 2005, I officially became a member of the Orleans Firebirds. From
2005 to 2010, I worked as a bat boy for the team. From the 2011 season
on, I have been an intern. Little did I know that these jobs not only were
so much fun, but also great learning experiences.
As a bat boy, I was taught patience. At 10 years of age, I was thrilled to
run onto the field to collect bats, bring baseballs to the umpires and collect balls that screamed into the fenced backstop. But, as eager as I was to
race onto the field, I had to wait for the play to finish.
There was one time when the ball got past the catcher with a man on
base. Not really knowing the rules of the game, I ran to the backstop to
retrieve the ball, only to be met by a 200-pound catcher trying to beat
me to it.
Needless to say, I was just a little bit embarrassed. Even now, eight seasons later, I wince at the memory. If I just had waited another second or
two, I would have realized that I didn’t need to run out to the field.
“From the day I stepped
onto the field at Eldredge Park,
I felt I truly was
a member of the team.”

Now, as an Eagle Scout and the
Senior Patrol Leader of Troop 83
of Eastham, I supervise 25 boys
from the ages 12 to 16. Trying to
manage that many people at one
time requires a lot of patience.
As an intern for the Firebirds
last year, I learned the hard way
that things don’t always go as
planned. The team began using
live video stream to accompany
traditional live broadcasts. Over
the first few games, the interns
had a lot of trouble trying to get
the new equipment to do what it
was supposed to do.
With a little time and patience,
the video stream was up and running by game time. Within a few
weeks of the season, all systems
were ready to go in no time at all.
I also have learned about dedication and discipline.
Working for the team meant I
had to be at certain games at certain times; no exceptions. That
discipline has carried over to my
success as a Boy Scout and the focus needed to attain Eagle Scout.
It also helps me every day at my
job at Eastham ACE Hardware.
Finally, the Firebirds’ experience has taught me well about
compassion and teamwork. From
the time I stepped onto the field
at Eldredge Park, I felt I truly was

Today, they are my big brothers.
When I went through a string
of surgeries in the winter of 2010
into 2011, I was overwhelmed by
support from alumni of the Firebirds. I was blessed to have a few
of them visit me in the hospital.
Because of this, I try my best to
share similar care and compassion

When the 2012 season ended,
I drove the team golf cart into the

The Home Plate Shop at Eldredge Park is open at 6:30 p.m. before every

What many Home Plate Shop customers may not know is that managing
the operation is a year-round effort, staffed entirely by a team of about 20
volunteers, motivated in large part by how important proceeds from sales
are to finance the Firebirds.

The Orleans Firebirds
baseball clinic
A summer highlight for boys and girls from 5 to 15
B
obby was diagnosed
with juvenile diabetes
when he was 6 years
old. He also suffers
from an anxiety disorder. The maladies make life pretty
tough, but baseball has been a saving grace, making him feel “normal,” as his uncle says.
Last summer, he visited the
Firebirds clinic. Soon, Coaches Jason Brown and Benny Craig were
giving Bobby (not his real name)
individual hitting and pitching instruction.
“Our family watched Bobby’s
excitement and enthusiasm for
baseball. He recited every night
the five fundamentals that Benny
had taught him, and the idea of
being a student-athlete rather
than an athlete-student.”
During one night game last
year, Bobby took photographs of
the Firebirds pitchers and pointed
out to his family things he saw
each pitcher do poorly, all based
on what he learned from Jason.
“He was ready to take the camera
to Brown in the dugout during the
game, until we suggested it may
not be the best idea,” a relative related with a smile.
The Firebird coaches just
didn’t run through drills or teach
fundamentals. “They spent time
listening to (Bobby) and his concerns, instilling along the way the
importance of what it is to be an
extraordinary person, not just an
extraordinary athlete. Learning
how to throw a change-up and
improve his hitting were just bonuses.”
Beyond the lights of the night
games, the Firebirds clinic and the
coaches’ commitment have become an indelible part of the Or-
leans summer at Nauset Middle
School.
Manager Kelly Nicholson receives letters and emails of praise
like the one from Bobby’s family
year round, citing not only improved skills, but also enhanced
sportsmanship – and love for the
game.
Manager Nicholson, who operates the clinic, agrees: “The kids
X
develop character skills and good
sportsmanship.
In addition to a parents-kids
game during the week, another
highlight is the “Run with the
‘Birds.” Clinic participants run
onto the field with the players
at the start of the game, and parents can take their pictures. “The
clinic and features like Run with
the ‘Birds have has taken off like
wildfire,” says Nancy Nickerson,
who along with Elaine Brickman,
volunteer hundreds of hours administering the clinic.
“We let our campers bring their
parents at 5 o’clock and watch batting practice in the dugout. Then,
we let their sons and daughters
catch balls in batting practice. All
of us are also available after the
game for autographs. Sometimes,
they go to dinner with the team,”
says Nicholson.

the family, whose members were
delighted to share his experience
and their appreciation. P

know that Nomar Garciaparra,
Matt Weiters and Manny Burris
played on the same field. Who
will be the next big leaguer from
the clinic? It’s all pretty special.”
It’s also special for the Firebirds’ players. “They become the
coaches; so they soon appreciate
their own manager and coaches
better,” explains Nicholson. “They
see how difficult it is to win working with 5, 6 or 7-year olds, and
asking them to perform each day.”
While improving skills are
important, the clinic is first and
foremost about having fun, says
Nicholson. “We want the kids to
All participants receive instruction from the manager,
coaches and Firebirds, as well as a
t-shirt, and an opportunity to “run
with the ‘Birds.” ‘Campers of the
Week’ also will be awarded at the
conclusion of each clinic.
Clinics are held weekly beginning June 17 and continuing
through August 2 at Nauset Middle School (adjacent to Eldredge
Park). They run from 9 a.m. to
11:30 a.m. Water breaks and a nutrition break will take place daily,
so attendees should bring snacks
and water, in addition to their
baseball gear.
Cost is $100/week or $25/day.
There also are specialty clinics in
pitching, catching and hitting for
$40 per session. You can sign up at
orleansfirebirds.com or register at

house into a summer Bird Nest.
“We didn’t know much about
baseball, and we knew very little
about the Cape league. We had
no idea that major league scouts
come here to recruit players,” says
the East Orleans resident.
So when the first players came
to nest at the von Thaden home
nine years ago, the family learned
quite a lot – and fast. “They sat
us down and told us the ABC’s of
baseball; and we developed a great
appreciation of the game,” recalls
von Thadden, who, with his wife,
Kim, and three children, have
hosted 18 players over the years.
“They’re teenagers now, but
our kids were still little back in
2004. Sometimes we’d let one of
the players take them out for ice
cream, and they thought it was
pretty cool to be out with a teenager without mom and dad,” says
von Thaden.
The family continues to host
two players each year. Their home
seems to be a lucky charm for its
summer residents; every player

who stayed there was drafted, and
most still are in the game.
The best part of the experience for him has been following
the successes of those he hosted.
“You spend such a short amount
of time with these boys in one
season, but you can have a lifetime connection. That’s how I
feel about Everett Teaford. He
was a pitcher on the 2005 team,
and now he plays for the Kansas
City Royals. I still go see him play.
Sometimes I’ll take one of the
kids with me.”
His involvement has had other
benefits. “We started going to all
the games. It’s been a great excuse
to leave the office. ‘I gotta go to
the baseball game!’” he quips.
Lasting ties have been a major
part of the Birds Nest experience
for Steve Garran and his family,
especially for son, Nathan.
Among the players they have
hosted over the years is Nate Freiman. The former Wellesely High
School and Duke University star
now is 26 years old and is playing in the majors for the Oakland
Athletics after spending time in
both the San Diego Padres and
Houston Astros systems. Freiman hit .298 with 24 home runs
and 105 RBIs in 137 games with
the Double A San Antonio Missions in 2012. The Garran family
already has been to Fenway Park
this season to watch Freiman
make his first big league appearance against the Red Sox.
They genuinely consider Freiman part of the family. He stands
6 feet, 7 inches, so he is called “Big
Nate,” while Nathan is “Little Nate.”
Recently, the entire family traveled
to Arizona to attend Freiman’s
wedding to Amanda Blumenherst,
who is on the LPGA Tour.
Mary DeBartolo, an Orleans
resident and owner of the Local
Scoop, welcomed Firebirds players in her home for the last two
summers, and she is doing so again
this season. For her, it’s about being involved with the community
and extending a helping hand to
others. As a single mother, she especially appreciates that the players have been excellent role models for her three teenage sons.
“The ones who’ve stayed with
us are all wonderful young men,
and it’s been a fabulous experience,” says DeBartolo, who hosted Anthony Gomez in 2011 and
then found room for three players
in 2012 – Reed Gragnani, Conrad
Gregor and Michael Montville.
“They were like big brothers to
my boys. Everybody pitched in
with household chores, shopping
for groceries.”
When he was assigned to a
host family, Gragnani did not
know what to expect. “But, it
was easy to relate to Mary and
her boys,” he recalls. “She made
us feel so comfortable. We found
a system to keep things running
smoothly at the house.”
No one is more connected
to the Bird Nests program than
Nancy Nickerson, an Eastham
resident who for the past 12 years
has been the team’s housing coordinator. She has personally hosted
more than 20 players with her
husband, Rob.
“Hosting not only is a rewarding experience for the families,
but also for the players,” she says.
“It means a great deal to them to
have a home away from home,
and it is reassuring for their parents to know their sons are with
people who make them part of
their family.”

Many host moms refer to the
players as their “summer sons,”
notes Nickerson. “It’s a great experience to get to know players
on a personal level and then spend
the summer cheering them on as
they pursue their baseball dreams.
Most of our host families agree
that the best part of the experience
is the lifelong connections that are
made…not only with the players,
but also with their families.”
The first player the Nickersons
hosted was Ryan Hanigan, who
now plays in Cincinnati. “He is
a great Orleans success story,”
she says. “He joined the team as
a temporary player, played well
enough to earn a full summer
contract, was named to the CCBL
All Star team, and signed with the
Reds the week after he left us. It
was very rewarding being his host
family and a small part of his baseball journey.” P

Bird Feeders
Bird Nests
After every home game, the team is treated to a meal that has been
prepared by various host families, committee members, local businesses
and organizations, plus other friends. The program begun by Kathy Udall
as “sandwich suppers” has expanded its gastronomical boundaries to include everything from pasta dinners to barbeques to sushi, and it really
helps the players - whose appetites may exceed their food budgets. It’s
a big undertaking to feed a group of hungry ballplayers, coaches and bat
kids. We thank those volunteers for their generous efforts.
The Orleans Firebirds are fortunate to have so many wonderful families who open their homes to our players, and make them welcome. Host
families are a critical link. Without their support, our program could not
exist. For many, housing the players is the start of lifelong friendships. The
following people were host families last summer, and many are with us
this year as well. We deeply appreciate their commitment and generosity.

Be more than
a fan, become
a benefactor
of the Firebirds
M
ore than 50,000 fans attended Firebirds’ games last season. That is by far the largest
attendance in the entire league,
and all of us in the Firebirds organization deeply appreciate your
continued, enthusiastic support
over the years.
This season we will need your
support even more.
It costs us $300,000 a year to
operate the team and cover expenses such as field maintenance
and repairs, housing the coaches,
transporting the players, providing uniforms and equipment,
buying bats and balls, etc.
Contrary to popular belief, the
team does not receive any direct
financial support from either Major League Baseball or the town of
Orleans. Despite having the Cape
Cod Baseball League’s highest attendance, no income is derived
from game admission, yearbook
distribution to fans, Internet
broadcasts or daily programs.
Unlike most other CCBL teams,
the Firebirds do not receive any
income from food concessions at
games.
Instead, all funds are raised
through the Orleans Athletic Association, which is a 501 (c) (3)
non-profit organization. Every
member of the OAA is a non-paid
volunteer. Many work hundreds
of hours a year tirelessly contributing to the team. The primary
sources of operating income are
sales from the Home Plate Shop,
corporate sponsorships, fees to
participate in the baseball clinic
and the 50-50 raffle.
That’s why we are so grateful
for all your individual and business donations. To help us re-
main financially strong, the OAA
launched the Firebirds Fan Club
in 2011. The generous outpouring
of support over the past two years
has enabled the team to avoid a
potential financial crisis and significantly reduce our debt.
The Firebirds are counting on
our great fans once again. We are
reaching out beyond Orleans to
Eastham, Provincetown, Truro
and Wellfleet residents, as well
as to our many summer visitors
to join our donor team and assist
us so we can continue to provide
this wholesome, family oriented
activity. Attendance at a Firebirds’
game is the best Cape Cod summer entertainment bargain available, and the team continues to be
the highlight of many vacations
as well as a major source of local
pride.
We depend on your generous
support for our survival. Please
consider a financial donation to
the team so this community treasure can continue to provide pleasure and entertainment for years
to come.
We also deeply appreciate the
many businesses that advertise
in this yearbook, and take out
various sponsorships that support
the team and its players. Those
businesses understand how the
Firebirds contribute vitally to our
local economy, and we encourage
you to visit their establishments
and utilize their services. P
The Firebirds represent
a win-win investment
for everyone!

ASE Master Mechanics
Specializing in Toyotas, Repair & Sales
4VSWFZJOHr&OHJOFFSJOHr&OWJSPONFOUBM1FSNJĨJOH
Russ Cabral and Mike Clifford have been working on cars – mostly Toyotas
– since 1976, after attending Barnstable High School. Working first for Toyota,
and then for themselves, they’ve built a reputation for excellent work, for standing
behind their products, and for being honest. It’s a reputation few businesses can
match.
We are open Monday through Friday, 8:00 to 5:00, and by appointment on
weekends. Nauset Auto Service and Sales is in Orleans, MA, on the eastern side
of Cape Cod.
In 1937, Llewellyn Schofield, along with his brothers Brent, Jay and Winford
founded Schofield Brothers, Inc. Back then, the office was a tent in Eastham.
Seventy-five years later, Lew’s grand-daughter, Laura Schofield, and her husband,
Bob Freeman head Schofield Brothers of Cape Cod at their Orleans office in the
Nauset Professional Building on Route 6A where they offer the following services
to their clients: property line surveys, septic system design, wetland permitting,
soil testing, certified plot plans, construction staking and more.
