Thrilling comeback
win over Big Reds
However, Mustangs stumble Saturday
in non-conference game with Wayne
The Mustang basketball team got
off to a great start with its 2008-2009
season Friday night with a 62-59 win
over Centerville. The win gives Davis County a leg up in the conference
race with a 1-0 mark.
However, the Mustangs then stumbled Saturday in a non-conference
game with Wayne of Corydon.
The Centerville win was not an
easy one for Coach Jeff Graves and
his Mustangs. The boys had to come
from behind much of the night and
did not have any significant lead until
late in the fourth quarter.
The Mustangs came out in the final
quarter with an aggressive attitude
and an aggressive style of play. “We
stepped it up in the fourth quarter,
that’s for sure. We seemed to be more
aggressive. That helped us get the
win in the end,” said Graves.
Much of the credit could be given
to Coleton Mathews who sparked
the team in the final eight minutes of
action. Mathews struggled in the first
half and picked up three fouls, which
forced him to sit out much of the second and third quarters. Coach Graves
put Mathews back in the game in the
fourth quarter, which turned out to be
a great coaching move.
Mathews and Mathew Roberts led
the scoring with 16 points each in the
game. For Mathews, 11 of those 16
points came in the final four minutes
of play. It also included a seven of
seven performance from the free
throw line.
Mathews biggest contribution to
the game came with 57 seconds left
to play. Davis County trailed 55-54 at
the time. A foul forced Davis County
to take the ball out of bounds underneath its own basket. “We ran one of
our easiest in-bounds plays. Coleton
just happened to be standing out on
the left wing all alone, and we found
him right away,” said Graves.
The in-bound pass went to
Mathews who was wide open from
the left wing. With his toes about six
inches beyond the three-point arc, he
let the ball fly. The shot went down,
and the Mustangs had a 57-55 lead.
Defensively, Davis County stepped
up its efforts. A couple of steals and
a couple of defensive rebounds took
possessions away from Centerville in
the closing minute. That also resulted
in fouls by Centerville in an effort to
get the ball back.
Davis County’s luck continued
as the free throw shooting was top
notch. Mathews and Utt each went
two for two in the final minute of
play. With the clock winding down,
Davis County led 61-56. Roberts was
fouled by Centerville one last time
with 7.4 seconds to play. Roberts
went one of two from the line, putting
Davis County up by six.
The Mustangs went to the other
end of the floor to play defense one
last time. Plugging up the middle,
Davis County gave up the long shots.
Centerville took that opportunity to
drain a three-pointer at the buzzer,
cutting the Mustang win to a score
of 62-59.
The game was a typical Davis
County vs. Centerville battle from
the start. Full of rivalry and intensity,
the two teams took to the floor battling for control. Brandon Johnson
put Davis County on top from the
opening tip with a three-pointer.
Centerville took over the lead from
there and held off any Davis County
rallies until Mathews’ three-pointer
at the end.
Johnson boosted Davis County
in the first quarter by scoring nine
of the team’s 10 points. Despite
the efforts, Davis County trailed
14-10. The two teams battled back
and forth furiously in a fast-paced
game. Aggressive defense and fierce
rebounding from both sides produced
a very physical battle on the court.
Centerville continued to have the
upper hand, pushing its lead to 27-21
at the half.
Centerville went up by nine early
in the second half. That’s when Davis County began to make its move.
Sparked by a traditional three-point
play from Roberts, Davis County
went on a 9-0 run to tie the game
at 30-30.
Davis County used a 5-0 run later
in the quarter to take a 37-35 lead. At
the end of the quarter, Davis County
did hold a 39-37 lead over Centerville, but it lasted just 11 seconds into
the fourth quarter before Centerville
again took control.
Centerville pushed its lead to six
points in the fourth quarter before
Davis County’s aggressiveness
kicked in and began cutting that lead
back. The two teams traded baskets
and leads midway through the fourth
quarter. Centerville took over the
55-54 lead before the dramatic ending that Mathews and the Mustangs
produced.
“We talked about never quitting,”
said Coach Jeff Graves. “This is a
group that believes in itself and has
kind of a quiet confidence about
it. Defensively, we still need work
on defense. We struggled with our
second tier help defense a little bit.
Overall, we played very well. We
did what we needed to do to win the
game, and the kids responded well to
getting that done.”

Wayne does it again; beats DC
day after the Centerville game
The Mustang basketball team
suffered through another year of
what some might call the annual
“Post-Centerville Game Syndrome.”
Davis County suffered a 73-62 loss to
Wayne of Corydon on Dec. 13.
For the past several years, the
Mustangs have scheduled a full
weekend with a game against Centerville on Friday night and then a
non-conference game with Wayne
of Corydon on Saturday. In the past
few years, the results have been wins
over Centerville followed by losses
to Wayne.
Coach Jeff Grave and his staff
talked about the possibility of it happening after last Friday night’s 62-59
thrilling win over Centerville. Their
fears were realized once again in
Saturday’s tough loss to Wayne.
“I just hope we can come back
tomorrow and play well. We haven’t
done that with this schedule the past
few years. We just have trouble
getting up for Wayne after playing
Centerville the day before,” Graves
said last Friday night.
The Mustangs got off to a good
start against the Falcons last Saturday
afternoon. The two teams battled
through a close game in the early moments of the first quarter. Wayne held
a lead early, but on a three-pointer by
Matthew Roberts, the Mustangs took
over a 13-11 lead with 3:24 left in the
first quarter.
Back-to-back technical fouls on
Wayne (first a player then the head
coach) allowed Davis County to keep
that lead. Another three-pointer by
Roberts boosted the Mustangs to a
20-17 first quarter lead.
That’s when things started to go
wrong. A Tucker Henderson shot at
the beginning of the second quarter
put Davis County up by five. That
was with 7:48 left in the half and was
also the last time Davis County held
the lead in this game.
Wayne picked up the pace and
engaged in a running game with
the Mustangs. Despite attempts by

Lady Mustangs break out
with victory over Wayne
The Lady Mustang basketball
team had a breakout game on Dec.
13 as they scored a 63-27 win over
Wayne of Corydon. The win not only
boosted the offensive confidence of
the team but snapped a four-game
losing streak.
Coach David Mason was very
pleased with his team’s effort and
said the girls needed the win to help
boost their confidence.
“We were struggling a little bit.
We are having trouble shooting, and
this was a nice game to maybe help
get us out of that,” he said. “I felt we
played well defensively, which led to
several points for us.”
Mason was most pleased with the
balanced scoring attack that his team
brought to the court in this game.
Sarah Lindemulder provided an of-
fensive spark by leading all scorers
with 23 points. Colbi Lynch added 11
points. The rest of the Lady Mustangs
all scored less than 10 points, but
nine different players scored during
the game. Krista Gibson and Kaylee
Hougland scored eight points and
seven points respectively to help
the cause.
“We have been playing pretty
well defensively,” said Mason of his
squad. “This game was no different.
We were able to get several turnovers. We turned them into points,
which is something we need to do
more of. I’m just very pleased with
the effort and happy that the girls
by Centerville’s Jordan McCoy on this play in
the first quarter of last week’s South Central
Conference game. Mathews hit one of two free
throws on this play. He had 16 points for the
game. Mathews also hit an important threepointer in the fourth quarter to put the Mustangs on top for good.

Key drive: Matthew Roberts drives through
a seam in the Centerville defense Friday night
for this lay-up in the second half of the game.
Roberts was fouled on the play and went to the
free throw line. He made both shots, helping
to secure the win in the final quarter of play.
Roberts finished the game with 16 points.

Williams went up against Seth Esaias
of Red Oak in the finals. Williams
struggled against Esaias in the match
and suffered a 14-5 loss.
Nelson pinned his way to the
championship match before being
beaten. He pinned Brandon Linn of
Pleasantville in the first round. The
pin came in 2:34. Nelson went up
against Jacob Kaska of Chariton in
the second round. He scored a pin
in 4:57, putting him in the championship match. He went up against
Trevor Wilson of Central Decatur
and suffered an 8-2 loss forcing him
to take second place.
Several others competed in the
tournament for Davis County. However, they were eliminated in the
early rounds.
“Those four wrestled really well
and got through their brackets pretty
easily,” said Coach Jim Nelson. “I’m
still pleased with the team effort the
kids are giving. Everyone is getting
on the mat and being aggressive.
They are working hard and doing
their best.”
The Mustangs faced Pekin and

Tuesday night. The Mustangs will
host the junior varsity takedown tournament on Friday and a youth tournament on Saturday in Bloomfield.

Wayne’s coach to slow things down
at times, the Falcons thrived on
the fast-paced game. They became
physical inside and found holes in the
Mustang defense. Wayne went on a
9-2 run to start the second quarter and
never looked back. They went on to
take a 36-30 half-time lead.
The six-point lead quickly turned
into double digits as the second
half got under way. The Mustangs
struggled to get anything going offensively, and they couldn’t find a
way to shut down Wayne’s balanced
scoring attack. Wayne pushed its
lead to 15 points before ending the
quarter with a 54-40 advantage over
the Mustangs.
Davis County did what it could to
keep up with the Falcons. Austin Utt,
Matthew Roberts, Coleton Mathews
and Tucker Henderson provided the
bulk of the offense.
Coach Graves shuffled different
players in and out of the lineup in
an effort to keep fresh legs on the
floor. Fouling situations also forced
his hand at substitutions, but nothing
seemed to go right in terms of the
score. No matter what Graves and the
Mustangs tried to do, they couldn’t
shut down the Falcons’ offense.
Maintaining a deficit between 10 and
15 points was all Davis County was
successful at doing in the final eight
minutes of action.
“We did keep battling,” said
Graves of his team’s efforts. “They
were just better than we were in this
particular game. We struggled with
our defense at times, and that hurt
us. We did see some good things,
but we need to work at being more
consistent with our play throughout
the game.”
The Mustang wrestling team had
four wrestlers finish first or second
in the Central Decatur Tournament
on Friday. The effort helped the
Mustangs score 109 team points
and finish eighth in a very tough
tournament.
Usually when teams score more
than 100 team points in a tournament
like this they end up finishing higher
in the team standings. However, with
teams such as Pleasantville, Mt. Ayr,
Chariton, Creston, Central Decatur,
PCM and Red Oak, the competition
is definitely going to be tough.
All those schools finished ahead of
Davis County in the team standings,
scoring between 123 and 183 team
points. “I was happy with our performance. We had two tournament
champions and two who finished
second. Getting four into the finals
was a good accomplishment for this
group.
Davis County’s Dillon Newton
won the 103 weight class beating
Theron Pace of Red Oak. Those two
were the only 103-pound wrestlers in
the tournament. Newton beat Pace by
pinning him in 1:10.
Fligg was the other Mustang champion at 145 pounds. Fligg started his
tournament run against Josh Richardson of Central Decatur. He pinned
him in 2:55. Fligg advanced to face
Josh Paddleford of Pleasantville,
scoring an 11-2 major decision in that
match. Fligg faced Drake Schafer of
Mt. Ayr in the championship match,
winning that match by an 11-2 major
decision also.
Williams scored a second place
finish at 160 pounds. Williams faced
Trent Little of PCM in his first match.
Williams won the match getting a
13-2 major decision win. He moved

were able to get a win like this.”
Lindemulder sparked the effort
early and kept Davis County on top
throughout the game. Lindemulder
picked up steals and headed for
breakaway lay-ups. She also drove
the lane offensively and got easy
baskets. Lindemulder’s efforts netted her 15 points in the first half. She
had only one basket from beyond the
three-point arc.
Gibson and Lynch provided the
spark Davis County needed down
low. With their rebounding and
scoring, the two girls helped Davis
County to a 19-3 first quarter lead and
a 30-12 half-time advantage.
Defensively, Davis County played
its best game against the Falcons.
Holding them to just 12 first-half
points was a phenomenal effort by
the girls, which continued into the
second half.
“I can’t say enough about the
defense. We still have some work
to do, but the girls played very well
defensively. I was very pleased with
the effort that they gave during this
game,” said Mason.
Davis County was able to get several others involved in the offense in
the second half. “We played several
players in this game and were able
to get them some quality minutes,”
said Mason. “They all had a chance
to contribute, and they responded
very well. It’s nice to see nine different players putting points on the
board.”
Davis County led 52-23 at the
end of the third quarter. Defensively
they held Wayne to just four fourthquarter points as they rolled to the
61-27 victory.

Twin Cedars hands DC close loss
Drives for basket: Tucker Henderson drives past this Cen-
terville defender on his way to the basket in the final quarter of
last weekend’s conference match-up. Henderson was fouled on
the play and went to the line where he hit free throws. His efforts
tied the game at 49-49 with 3:57 left to play.
Lot of work ahead for Chizek
AUBURN, Ala. (AP) — Gene
Chizik was formally introduced
Monday as Auburn's football coach.
He'll have a lot of work to do.
The former Tigers defensive coordinator needs to assemble a staff and
salvage recruiting following Tommy
Tuberville's resignation. He also
faces some skepticism among fans,
in part because his Iowa State team
lost its final 10 games this season,
leaving his record there at 5-19 in
two seasons.
"I know that we have found the
right fit for Auburn," Auburn athletic
director Jay Jacobs said in a statement describing Chizik as "a highenergy coach that is an outstanding
motivator and demands a tough,
physical style of football."
When Chizik was the defensive
coordinator at Auburn in 2004, the
Tigers went 13-0, and the next year
he went to Texas. With him as defensive coordinator, the Longhorns
also went 13-0 and won the national
championship.
Auburn was paying Tuberville an
average of $3.3 million a year and
agreed to give him $5.1 million to
buy out his contract despite calling his departure a resignation. He
stepped down after a 5-7 season and
the Tigers' first loss to rival Alabama
in seven years, a 36-0 rout that was
the final blow for a team that was
predicted to win the Southeastern
Conference Western Division.
Davis County lost a close game to
Twin Cedars, 38-37, on Dec. 8.
To look at Davis County’s early
season schedule, Twin Cedars is a
game that most would have thought
the Lady Mustangs would win
fairly easily. Twin Cedars is a smaller
school than Davis County, giving the
illusion that its sports teams might be
an easy mark.
Davis County found out differently after suffering the one-point loss.
Twin Cedars came into the game with
returning all-state performer Lindsey
Hoehns. Hoehns can be credited for
much of the team’s successes in the
past couple of years.
Coaching against Twin Cedars and
Hoehns, any good coach can figure
out that stopping Hoehns at least
gives their team a chance at winning
the game. Davis County Coach David Mason and his Lady Mustangs
went into last week’s game with this
strategy in mind. Despite all the efforts of the Lady Mustangs, Hoehns
proved to be too much to handle.
“Stopping her was part of our
game plan,” said Mason. “We knew
we had to slow her down to have a
Even Santa Watches TV!

chance at winning the game.” Mason
said his team’s defensive efforts in
the first half were excellent.
“We held her to 10 points and
felt pretty good about what we were
doing. Defensively, we are playing pretty well at this point in the
season. The girls are working hard,”
he said.
Davis County was in a great position to be in control of the game in
the first half. Defensive efforts were
keeping Hoehns in check. Davis
County jumped out to a 9-6 first
quarter lead.
Davis County benefited from the
efforts of Sarah Lindemulder and
Colbi Lynch on the offensive end
to put the Lady Mustangs into that
lead. Lynch ended up with 10 of her
game high 12 points in the first half
as Davis County ran out to a 22-14
lead.
Twin Cedars outscored Davis
County 24-15 in the second half,
stealing the win away from the Lady
Mustangs. Hoehns scored 22 of Twin
Cedars’ 24 second-half points.
“She simply got away from us
in the second half,” said Mason of
Hoehn’s offensive success.
Despite the disappointment of
defense, Davis County still had a
chance to pull out a victory in the
end. Davis County trailed by six
points at the end of the third quarter.
They battled back to tie the game
at 36-36 with a minute left to play.
Some of that comeback was sparked
by three-pointers by Josie Rushman.
Rushman had two of them in the
second half.
In the closing moments of the
game, Davis County found itself
trailing 38-37 and even had the ball.
A shot to win the game went up as
the final seconds ticked away. The
shot fell away.
“We had a chance to win. We just
missed the shot at the end,” said
Mason.

Referee Jeff Triplette added a
bright splash of red blood to his
black and white stripes on a rough
NFL Sunday that didn’t even spare
the officials from the pain.
Triplette was knocked face first
into the Giants Stadium turf and had
his nose bloodied during Shaun Ellis’
fumble return for a touchdown in the
New York Jets’ 31-27 win over the
Buffalo Bills.
“I’m good, I’m good,” Triplette
told The Associated Press after the
game, with both nostrils filled with
gauze. “It’s not a broken nose. It’s
just bloodied.”
Triplette and the rest of his crew
were laughing about the injury as
they got ready to leave the stadium
with umpire Jim Quirk pointing to
his bright red slacks.
“His nose matches my pants,”
Quirk said.

Dear Santa,
Hi Santa, this is my first of many
letters to you. I really don’t know
much about Christmas because I am
only 11 months old, but I do know
that mommy, Trudi, and grammy
have put out a lot of new toys for me
to play with.
My friend Kallee and I like to
play with Trudi’s Santa train. I really don’t know what I want, maybe
some clothes and toys for my age,
everything tastes good right now so
something I can put in my mouth.
I will leave you some teething
biscuits (they taste great!)
Love,
Tucker Ball
Dear Santa,
Hi Santa, my name is Kallee. I
am 11 months old so I am new to
this letter writing. How are you?
My friend Tucker and I really like
Trudi’s Santa train. We play with it
all the time. Maybe a train with you
in it would be fun to get. My sister
says I need a dolly. She knows more
about this than I do so I guess that
would be nice.
So how do you come to my house?
The kids at Trudi’s talk about your
sleigh; what is that? Can you bring
my mommy, daddy and sister a nice
present? I know what I want, something that tastes good to get these
teeth in. They really hurt! I will leave
you some cheese puffs (my favorite).
Have a safe trip.
Love,
Kallee Nebel
Dear Santa,
Hi! My name is Karston. I am
2-years-old. I will be three real soon.
I want a little bike for Tallee (Kallee),
a big bike for me. A little computer
for Tallee and a big computer for me,
little cowboy boots for Tallee and
big cowboy boots for me. I want to
learn numbers, I want a dog too, and
a frog just like Trudi’s, a sucker for
me and Tallee, and a hairdryer just
like my mom’s.
I will leave your reindeer banana
and apple split. I will leave you a
banana split. I can’t wait until you
come to my house.
Love,
Karston
Dear Santa,
Hi! My name is Madison. I am
3-years-old. Dear Santa Claus I love

pretty. I am so excited for Christmas!
I have a new kitty named Carver
(Zach named him).
I would like a toy camel, lizard,
frog, roller skates, and Little Pet
Shop. I want something for my
cat when he is running from my
dog. I will leave you a package of
snowmen. I want a rollercoaster so
my dad won’t tickle me. A hopper
thing (trampoline) so my cat can’t
get me.
Love,
Madison
Dear Santa Claus,
I would like to wish you a Merry

Hi Santa,
I’m only 6 months old so mommy
is writing this for me. I don’t care
want you bring me as long as I can
chew on it or it makes noise. I am not
sure about the Christmas tree but I
have been really good and not bothered it. Mommy says that I have to
say bye-bye cause I am being grumpy
and she is going to put me to bed.
Love you Santa

‘I’ll leave cookies, milk; Hope Daddy doesn’t eat them first’
Dear Santa,
My name is Carter Batterson. I
have tried to be on my best behavior
this year. Sometimes having a little
brother makes that hard but I sure try.
Thank you very much for all our gifts
last year. This year I would like Petz
Rescue and Nerf Dart Tag Wii games,
a PSP, and some Goosebumps books.
But most of all I would love to have a
new bb gun and a hunting dog. Please
don’t forget my brother Badger. He
sure has tried to be good. We will
leave cookies and milk for you and
some of our daddy’s corn for your
reindeer. Take care and fly safe.
Love,
Carter
Son of Jason and Dana Batterson
Dear Santa,
This is my very first Christmas! I
do not have it all figured out yet, but
my sisters told me I need to write
a letter to Santa to tell him what I
would like for Christmas. I would
like a Crawl & Cruise Musical Jungle
and a Musical Table. My mom says
I need new clothes, as I am growing quickly! Anything else that you
might like to bring I am sure to love.
I will leave cookies and milk for youI just hope Daddy doesn’t eat them
first! Have a safe trip!
Love,
Blake Barker

Dear Santa,
My name is Jaycee and I’m
6-years-old. I would like a new
water baby and some new games for
my Nintendo DS. Thank you for all
the gifts you brought last year. I will
leave you some yummy treats and
some hay for your reindeer!
Merry Christmas,
Jaycee Townsend
Dear Santa,
My name is Dawson and I’m
4-years-old. My mom and dad say I
have been pretty good this year. I’m
not going to order anything special
this year, I just thought I would
wait and be surprised on Christmas
morning! I will leave you milk and
cookies and some special treats for
all the reindeer!
Merry Christmas,
Dawson Townsend
P.S. Please make sure you stop at
my friend Mikki’s, she loves baby
dolls!
Dear Santa,
I have been a very good boy this
year. I am 7-years-old. For Christmas I would like a Wii, a Game Boy
game, Diary of a Fly, chapter books
(hard backs, please), and Hawkeye
stuff for my room. I have tried not to
bother my sister too much this year,
I am working on this Santa.
I have been saving my money for
a DS game, but if you want to bring
me one, I would be so happy. I will
leave you cookies and milk. Thanks
Santa.
Love,
Adam Byrd
Dear Santa,
My name is Avery Byrd. I am
4-years-old. I have been a good girl
this year. I have tried not to pester my
brother too much. I am in preschool
now, and really learning a lot. For
Christmas, I would like some makeup and glittery lip gloss. I would also
like a Baby Alive, new hair bows,
Hungry Hippos, and a pair of high
heels. I love you so much. I will have
some cookies and milk for you. Also,
I never forget to leave something for
the reindeer. Thank you Santa!
With love,
Avery Byrd
Dear Santa,
My name is Lauren Davis. This
is my first Christmas and I am 7
months old. I have been a very good
baby in the 7 months that I have
been here this year. All I really want
for Christmas is to be able to master
this crawling business, instead of
just going in reverse. Also a couple
of more teeth would be nice too. I
will be coming to see you before
Christmas, and I hope that you don’t
scare me. My grandma tells me that
I will be leaving you some cookies
and milk, with a little something for
the reindeer too. But, in the event that
they are missing just know that I am
not responsible because I am not allowed or able to eat any of those yet.
Thanks Santa!
Love,
Lauren Davis
P.S. Oh, and please don’t forget
about my buddy Oscar. Even though
he’s been a little bit of a naughty kitty
this year!
Dear Santa,
My name is Sydney and I live in
Cedar Falls. This is my first Christmas. I will be at my grandpa’s and
grandma’s house for Christmas, so
I didn’t want you to loose me since
I am so little. My dad says I need
formula, since I am a growing girl,
and lots of diapers, since I use a lot.
But could you please leave me a few
rattles too! Thank you!
Love,
Sydney
P.S. Please don’t forget my dog
Bailey, she likes to eat too.
Dear Santa,
I hope that you have had a good
year. I want to thank you for all my
gifts that I got last year. This year I
would like to have the Barbie Diamond Castle, Coloring Books, PlayDoh, a Barbie doll named Theresa,
Bendaroos and some new nail polish.
Please bring something nice for my
sisters and brother. I will leave some
cookies for you and some carrots for
the reindeer.
Love,
Kaitlin Fincher

Hi Santa, I would like an airplane,
and a choo-choo train. I would also
like a bb gun so I can practice shooting plastic jugs with my uncle. I am
still not sure about Christmas, but the
older I get the more I understand. I
have been good or, I better say, I have
tried to be good. I hope you make
your trip safely.
Brayden Hopkins,
2 and a half
Dear Santa,
Can I please have some clay and a
pottery wheel for Christmas?
Thanks,
Haylie Sumner-Lindberg,
age 8
Dear Santa,
How is Mrs. Claus? I would like
Polly Pocket dolls, a Strawberry
Shortcake house, and maybe some
neat pens and paper because I like
to write. Thanks!
Drennan Lindberg,
age 5
Dear Santa,
I would like some Hot Wheels, a
dump truck that dumps dirt, and a gun
that goes “KAPOW” to shoot deer.
When I am big and strong, I would
like to shoot two deer. Did you know
that I turn 3 years old on Dec. 26th?
Thanks!
Drew Lindberg, age 2
Dear Santa,
I would like a baby and a baby
stroller. Could you also make my
baby sister or brother get here soon
so I won’t be the baby anymore?
I am ready to be one of the “big
kids”. I like to do things for myself.
Thanks!
Brylie Lindberg,
age 18 months
Dear Santa,
My name is Morgan McCarty and
I am 8 1/2 years old. I have been very
good this year. I finally know all the
names of your reindeer!
For Christmas I would like for
you to bring me a Nintendo DS,
lava lamp, Hannah Montana doll,
basketball hoop and a basketball.
Cody says I’m going to be a really
good basketball player so I need to
practice. It is OK if you just bring
me one thing from my list because
I know you have lots of children to
take toys to.
I will leave you cookies and something to drink on Christmas Eve.
You seem to like whatever we put
out because it is always gone in the
morning. I can’t wait to get up really
early to see what you have brought
for me.
Love,
Morgan
Dear Santa,
I have tried to be a very good
boy this year. I would like to have a
Fisher Price Mega Bouncer, Fisher
Price video camera and a Hot Wheels
race track. Please remember my little
brother Griffin and my friends at
Rainbow and Friends Preschool. My
dog “Sidney” loves to go sledding
with me, so I bet she’d like a ride
in your sleigh for Christmas if you
have time.
Love,
Garrett M. Bailey
Dear Santa,
I have tried to be a very good boy.
I would like a Clipo Creativity Table,
Little People Spin N’ Crash Raceway
and a sand and water table. Please
remember by big brother Garrett.
We will leave milk and cookies by
our tree for you!
Love,
Griffin J. Bailey
Dear Santa Claus,
My name is Aevon and I am
2-years-old. I have been a good boy.
I want a John Deere scooter and
a hamburger with pickles. I don’t
want dirty socks. Bubba and Haze
need a book.
Aevon Hohenshell
Dear Santa,
My name is Tayler Hopkins. I am
5-years-old. I have been a very good
boy this year! I would like to see a
black four-wheeler under the tree!
It might be a tight fit in your sleigh
but I think you can do it. I would
also like to see a DVD player and
a remote control car under my tree
Thank you very much Santa, and
Santa’s helpers.
Sincerely,
Tayler Hopkins
Hi Santa,
My name is Celeste. I am 4 years
old. I am trying to be good so you
can bring me one of each girl toy for
Christmas. I will leave out cookies
and milk for you and food for the
reindeer.
Merry Christmas,
Celeste Hougland
Dear Santa,
When you come to my Mom’s and
Grandma’s house I would like some
toys. I would like a tractor, a train
and a semi with a trailer. Would you
also give my friend Wyatt a tractor,
a train and a semi with a trailer so
we can play together? Please give
my friend Taylor a little playhouse
and some little cars and my friend
Kaylee a doll and a dollhouse. You
will find some cookies when you
come to my mom’s—if I can stay out
of them!! I will see you at the north
pole on Saturday I can’t wait!! Merry
Christmas!
Love your big helper,
Nicholas Sample
Dear Santa,
I want an iPod, XBOX, ATV, toy
sword with a case, a transformer
(Bumblebee), WWW smack down
vs. Raw for my PS2, Sonic Unleashed and Ben 10 Alien force both
for my PS2, also NASCAR ‘09 for
my PS2, a toy shot gun, a big toy
deer and a M3 player. I think I have
been good enough to get at least a
few of these.
Thank You,
Douglas Turner, age 9
Dear Santa,
I want a baby, angel playhouse,
toy butterfly and a toy Joshua. I will
leave you and your deer some cookies and milk.
Love,
Tatum Turner, age 5
PS: I will always take shoes
and boots as you probably already
know.
Dear Santa,
I would like to have the following
for Christmas please: Blue jeans,
some tank tops to put under my
sweaters, matching under clothing
(satin), nice high heel boots and
some more make-up to replenish
my stock.
Thanks,
Stacey Fowler
Dear Santa,
I might have been good enough
to get a few things this year. I would
like to get a Playstation 2 with some
games and a Skateboard. Actually
would like a pair of DC shoes if able
(they are for the skateboard use).
Thanks,
Ryan Fowler
Dear Santa,
We hope you and the reindeer are
getting ready for your BIG trip. We
have tired to be good girls this year.
For Christmas, we would like a Wii,
Hannah Montana stuff, and new
things for our ponies. Please don’t
forget to stop at all our cousins’
houses.
Merry Christmas!
Brett and Briley Lough
P.S. We will leave you a snack and
hay for the reindeer.
Dear Santa,
I would like a Nintendo DS and
some games with it too. And I’ll take
a miker phone for my staireo, candy,
and make up. How is Rudolph doing?
Have a Merry Christmas!!
Your friend,
Kennedy Jo Clyman
Dear Santa,
How are you? I have been a good
boy this year. For Christmas I would
like a Leapster and games for it. I
love playing with my sister and my
preschool friends.
Love,
Cooper Clyman, age 5
Dear Santa,
How are you doing? I hope that
everyone at the North Pole is well
and doesn’t have the chicken pox.
I have been a pretty good boy this
year but it has been rough at times.
This is what I would like to have
for Christmas: Yo-Yo, Hawkeye
stuff, Frog Habitat, a lizard, army
model airplane, GameCube games,
Hot Wheels, model cars & trucks,
Lego’s, Nerf Long Shot gun, and also
especially a WII. Don’t forget my big
sister Cami even though she picks
on me. Please have a safe trip and I
will leave you some cookies and a
Diet Mt. Dew by the tree. I will also
leave the reindeer some treats on the
front porch.
Merry Christmas
Clay Guiter
Dear Santa,
My name is Caydn Hall and I
am 5 years old. This letter is for me
and my brother Cayne who is 3 and
please remember our baby brother
Caysn who is in Heaven. We just
wanted to let you know that despite
what Mom and Dad think - we have
tried to be good all year and we are
really hoping you will be able to stop
at our house on Christmas Eve. We
are into everything so it shouldn’t
be too hard to find something we
will like. There a few particular
items that we’d both like to have (or
should I say that I’d like to have and
my little brother Cayne always wants
to have everything that I have!) I’d
really like to have a Cricket (little 22
rifle) but Mom and Dad say I’m not
old enough but I thought maybe I’d
ask you anyway (can’t hurt to ask).
I’d also like to have some hunting
clothes - camo and orange for turkey
and deer hunting; a sling for my gun;
a bug cage and maybe a cage trap.
Cayne would also like to have some
hunting clothes and he found a toy
camo shotgun that he thinks he really
needs. He’d like to have a real knife
but Mom and Dad definitely said NO
WAY to that-he’s way too little! I’m
sure he will like whatever you bring
him and so will I! Hope you have a
good trip and can bring all the other
little boys and girls everything that
they want too! Can’t wait to see
you! We will leave you some cookies
and milk and maybe a treat for the
reindeer too.
Love ya!
Caydn and Cayne Hall
Dear Santa,
Thank you for the gifts last year! I
have had a hard year, and the last few
weeks have been tough. (I’m trying
very hard to be good!) If I am still
on your good list I would like some
new cars, race tracks, games, and
everything else that is cool. I would
also like to have more sleds, and a
new spider man ball. I also need new
shoes, and want a new scooter. Please
don’t forget my sister, she has been
very good, and all my cousins and
my friends, too! Oh ya, mom says I
need new clothes.
XOXO

I can’t believe you have had to call

My name is Jalee. I am 3 years
old. Last year I told you that I would
try really hard this year to be good,
“but I just can’t do it”. Dad says that
you will still stop by and leave me a
present since I was honest. I would
really like a baby doll and a swing
for my baby doll. Mom says that
Jenna and Jordan (my sisters) are
on the naughty list this year, so you
don’t have to bring either of them
a Nintendo DS that they are asking
for, socks will do just fine. Thanks
Santa.

“Books At Bedtime” was the
2008 Christmas service theme for
Beta Rho Chapter of Delta Kappa
Gamma .
More than three dozen pairs of
pajamas and numerous books were
donated to the Crisis Center and
Women’s Shelter by this group of
professional women educators.
Kay Davis, Outreach Advocate
for Davis, Appanoose and Wayne
Counties, explained the current status of the shelter, its educational and
protective services, and the economic
needs on Dec. 11, 2008, at the monthly meeting of the organization. Davis
then was given the donated items for
both women and children. The items
will be used by individuals needing
assistance from the facility.

personal and professional growth
of women educators and excellence

Motion by Anderson to approve an increase
in the rates for electric by using a monthly facilities charge of $32.58, and an energy charge of
8.96¢ per Kwh for all classifications. An energy
cost adjustment could be included into the
Ordinance that addressed that the current rates
are based upon an Energy Cost Index of 6.40¢
per Kwh, and may be increased or decreased
periodically by an Energy Cost adjustment equal
to the amount by which the average cost of
electric energy purchased and generated by
the Bloomfield Electric Utility in the period since
the last preceding adjustment is greater or less
than the current Energy Cost Index.

DAVIS COUNTY AUDITOR AND

Davis County senior
citizen news report
By Ruth Swaim
The week started out well with a
sizable crowd, good lunch and good
companionship.
Joan Morris and Kathi Scott from
Davis County Hospital were here for
a presentation on how to avoid winter
illness. They passed out information
telling how to tell the difference
between the flu and a cold and steps
to take to avoid taking either.
Paula announced the schedule
for the week: pitch today, peek-aboo poker Tuesday and Thursday,
pinochle Wednesday, and Council on
Aging meets Friday at 11 a.m.
Today, the 8th of December, is
National Brownie Day. That could
pertain to the brownie that is baked
or the member of a Brownie Troop.
It is also observed as “Take it in the
Ear Day.” Paula was just as confused
by that observance as the rest of us
were and went on the Internet to find
some information, but there was none.
I guess everyone can put their own
connotation on it.
She read some very funny jokes
that she had received via email from
Alaska. That’s my girl!
Karla’s meatloaf was so good, and
with it we had baked potato with butter
or sour cream, escalloped tomatoes,
peaches and a homemade whole
wheat roll.
FYI: This bit of information will
disillusion all romantics. The word
mistletoe is derived from the ancient
Germanic formation mistelan which
means something like “a twig that
causes animals to excrete,” the belief
being the parasitic plant’s berries
gave the birds that ate them loose
bowels. When you are kissing under
the mistletoe, try not to remember any
of the above information.
Fact of Life: Knowledge is what
you get from reading the fine print
in a contract; experience is what you
get from not reading it.
Tuesday, the center was closed.
There is an unwritten understanding
that when school is cancelled because
of weather, the center closes. Paula
contacts two board members for their
opinions and then notifies all who
had lunch reservations and those
scheduled to receive home-delivered
meals.
When she called this morning,
she reported after everyone had left
yesterday that Becky Rysdam had
brought in five sacks of a variety of
apples. Thank you for your generosity,
Becky. Hopefully, the weather will
cooperate tomorrow and we can get
to the center and enjoy them.
FYI: It could prove embarrassing to
have to preach what you practice.
Fact of Life: The hand that lifts the
cup that cheers should not be used to
shift the gears.
Wednesday was baked chicken
day with sides of mashed potatoes
and gravy, scalloped corn, roll and
Jell-O fruit salad. There was a good
turnout to enjoy the meal and to play
pinochle afterwards.
Monday, Kevin Nelson from
Humana will be here with ice cream
and cake. Friday, the 19th, will be the
monthly birthday dinner celebrating
all December birthdays. There will be
traveling bingo that day, too.
To bring you up to date on events
to observe—yesterday, the 9th, in
1884, the ball bearing roller skate was
patented. And it was National Pastry
Day—that occasion all pie lovers can
™
relate to. Today, we observe Human
Rights Day, and on this day the Nobel
Peace Prize is awarded.
In the spirit of the season,

300 SPRING STREET • BELLEVUE, IA 52031
FYI: Some girls don’t care if a man
fits the bill, so long as he foots it.
Fact of Life: The tight skirts of
prejudice often shorten the steps of
progress.
Today we were greeted by Wendi
who was filling in for Paula who was
attending a meeting at the Ottumwa
office.
Wendi informed us today is
National Noodle Ring Day, another
one of those questionable days.
This day is also the anniversary
of UNICEF. She shared some
outrageous Christmas facts. A couple
of examples, 14,000,000 tons of
trash are generated from gift wrap
and shopping bags. Second, Santa
must visit 1,842,000,000 homes on
Christmas. After that, poor Santa must
be completely pooped.
Lunch really hit the spot this brisk
December day. Karla had made potato
chowder, egg salad sandwich, rice
pudding and pears.
We really enjoyed the efforts of
Marsha Davis. She brought a big
plate of several kinds of candy she
had made. That little lady knows
how to make good candy. Caution
was thrown to the wind and everyone
ate their fill.
A fun afternoon was spent playing
peek-a-boo poker and eating Marsha’s
candy.
FYI: The thing opened most often
by mistake is the human mouth.
Fact of Life: The fact that you are
always harping on something is no
indication you are an angel.
Those coming into the center
today were greeted with a table full
of Christmas goodies, compliments
of Karla—a full spread of all kinds
of cookies, candy and little loaves
of bread. It is unbelievable that after
all the cooking she does up here she
would spend her time at home cooking
goodies for us. That’s our Karla!
We were glad to welcome members
of Lucky Seven Club with Helen
McElderry as hostess.
David Thordarson was welcomed
as a new member of the Council on
Aging. This month’s meeting had
been scheduled for today instead of
Thursday, the usual time, because
Paula couldn’t be here. It was reported
that a total of 780 meals were served
at the center during the month of
November with 17 days of serving.
It was voted to purchase new round
serving plates to increase the homey
atmosphere. And O’ Happy Day!
Paula read a letter from the Davis
County Foundation that the center had
been given a grant for the purchase of
a TV, VCR/DVD and Wii games.
Today, the 12th, is Poinsettia Day,
Hovercraft was patented in 1955, and
it is National Ding-a-Ling Day.
Paula shared some humorous bits
of wisdom and a joke brought by
Steve Evans.
The menu today was beef macaroni
casserole, broccoli, pears and
cinnamon roll. It was good eating to
end the week.
Rhonda Northup was here taking
blood pressures.
FYI: Experience is something you
don’t get until just after you need it.
Fact of Life: When nobody around
you seems to measure up, it’s time to
check your yard stick.

DES MOINES,(AP) — The bakers
of chocolate chunk cookies beloved
by the Obama family have hired a
publicist and are angling to sell the
goodies to organizers of inaugural
parties.
Rodney Maxfield, co-owner of
Baby Boomers’ Cafe in Des Moines,
said Thursday that since word got
out that the Obama family enjoyed
snacking on cookies at the restau-
grown so much he is working with a
bakery to help meet demand, hired an
employee to help with packaging and
teamed up with FedEx for shipping.
“We just got a call from a woman

It’s crazy.”
He said he also is getting lots of
orders for holiday parties locally and
from restaurants in the region.
— ACT NOW —
DES MOINES -What would the
holidays be without good food?
Unfortunately, traditional holiday
foods are often high in fat, calories
and sugar.
But according to Cindy Conroy,
M.A., R.D., L.D., a registered dietician at Iowa Heart Center, preparing
a healthy holiday dinner doesn’t
mean you have to give up your family’s favorite dishes. “With a little
creativity,” she says, “you can cut the
calories from your recipes without
sacrificing good taste and your family
won’t even notice.”
Here are a few ways to give thanks
to your heart this season:
• Instead of basting the turkey
with its own fatty drippings, try using chicken broth or vegetable juice
instead. Also, place meat on a rack
so it doesn’t soak in the fat in the
bottom of the pan.
• When preparing packaged rice
or potato mixes, cut the amount of
butter or margarine in half or, better
yet, omit the fat entirely. You can also
make a low-fat version of mashed potatoes: bake your potatoes, scoop out
the flesh, whip in evaporated skim
milk and add seasonings to taste (you
can also use fat-free chicken broth to
flavor potatoes).
• Use flavored vinegars in your
salad dressings. (You can buy them
at the store, or make them at home
by putting fresh herbs into a bottle
of white wine vinegar and letting the
mixture age for at least a week.)
• For sandwich party platters,
use roast beef, turkey breast or lean
ham instead of salami, pastrami or
liverwurst. Offer low-fat condiments
like salsa, Dijon mustard or balsamic
vinegar.
• When making crumb crusts for
pies, start with half the margarine
your recipe calls for, and then add
only as much as you need to moisten
the crumbs.
• Substitute non-calorie sweetener
(such as Splenda) for sugar in your

This holiday season has been
brighter for Deb Hines of Bloomfield
thanks to a Thanksgiving reunion
with a cousin she had not seen for
44 years.
Hines and her cousin, Paul Johnny
Utterback, spent a day and a half
together starting the night before
Thanksgiving.
“We both agreed to never lose
contact again,” Hines said. “As Paul
Johnny said, ‘I have found my family
again, and we’ll always be together
now.’”
Hines said the last memory of
seeing each other was in 1964 at the
Ottumwa Drive-In Theatre during the
Fourth of July celebration.
“They had all the free hot dogs you
could eat, swings to play on and three
movies,” Hines recalled. “Of course,
us children never lasted through all
three movies.
“My two brothers and I went to
play on the swings, and we ran into
two of our cousins, Paul Johnny
and Teresa Utterback,” Hines said.
“We were having a great time until
it started to rain and get chilly. My
brothers and I went to our parent’s,
car. We didn’t know where Paul and
Teresa went.”
Hines said her parents decided
to stay and watch the movie even
though they had to run the car’s
heater and windshield wipers.
Her father made a trip to the snack
bar and discovered Paul Johnny and
Teresa “just walking around, cold
and wet. He brought them to the car
to warm up.
