BEST l a c i Med The Davis Clipper 2016 O F D AV I S Readers’ top picks announced H ere they are, the businesses, services, medical practitioners and recreation locations in Davis County that you, our Clipper readers, chose as your favorites. In celebration of our 125th year of publication, we’re introducing a number of new ideas at the Clipper, starting with our first-ever (and becoming annual) Best of Davis program. For several weeks in January and February, we printed a ballot in our editions giving readers a chance to vote for their favorite spots for Davis County food and drink; recreating with hiking, biking, bowling and more; services for both the inside and outside of the home, and health-care providers. Readers designated their choices, then mailed their ballots back to the Clipper offices. The response was overwhelming! Hundreds of ballots were sent to us, along with many positive comments such as “This was a lot of fun,” “Great to recognize our local businesses,” “Will you be doing this every year?” (the answer is yes), and “Have you ever considered a category for (several ideas suggested).” We are thrilled at the response and happy to provide the list of YOUR choices of YOUR favorites in this special publication in this week’s Davis Clipper. So check to see if your favorites were the top vote-getters, visit these businesses if you haven’t before, and plan now for our 2017 contest that we’ll start next January. After 125 years of serving the residents of Davis County, we’re happy to help promote our readers’ choices for Best of Davis 2016. Enjoy. --Tom Haraldsen, Managing Editor Services k n i r D & d o o F Recreation 125 YEARS SERVING YOU! For more than five decades, loyal customers have come to what has truly become the gathering place in Bountiful for great Italian food and so much more. Today, you’ll find manager Rob McCall still making the eatery’s famous pizzas the old fashioned way—with hand-tossed dough rolled, layered with tasty ingredients and cooked to perfection. No wonder Robintino’s won two categories in this year’s Best of Davis—Best Ital- ian and Best Pizza. The restaurant actually outgrew two locations. Originally, it opened in a small portion of the area that now houses the Mandarin. It was later located off 500 West, and when Bratten’s Cove closed, Robintino’s moved to its long-time location on 500 West, right across the street from the Davis Clipper. Recipes from owner Bob McCall for the soups, salad dressings, sauces and pizza dough are still the ones used every day—time honored and appreciated by generations of patrons. Savor the lasagna—three-layered dishes with four cheeses, ground beef and sauce. The freshly sliced bread with Robintino’s famous garlic spread, the minestrone soup and myriad of pizza combinations and options make dining at Robintino’s a delicious tradition. The restaurant is open six days a week for lunch, dinner, and snacks in between. Come watch Rob toss his pizza dough. Italian the way it should be prepared and baked. They excel at customer service. Nothing is more important than that in business success. No matter what your business offers in terms of product or services, the way you deal with customers will largely dictate how they deal with and think of you. There are some basic rules any business should follow to make that happen. It starts with your employees. They should exhibit skills of empathy, patience and consistency. They should be adaptable to different situations, and since all customers are different, your employees will very likely need to adapt. Make sure communication is clear—that they can convey to customers exactly what you and your business means for them to understand. Use positive language, stay cheerful no matter what and never end a conversation without confirming the customer is satisfied. Look at every touchpoint. A bad customer experience can ruin a relationship forever, so be sure your staff pays attention to key points of the customer’s experience. Address those. Interact with customers—engage in conversations when appropriate and, if the conversation goes in that direction, discuss shared interests or experiences. In the food industry, how often have you as a consumer asked your waiter or waitress, “What’s good on the menu?” Customers appreciate honesty, so don’t give them an answer like, “It’s all good” or “Everyone likes this product.” Speak from experience and add your personal feelings. Practice proactive strategies— maybe even play-acting with staff in advance of opening your store. Practice different scenarios so your team is prepared for any eventuality. Stay engaged—you never want customers to feel you’ve “checked out” of a conversation or interaction. This also means that as a business owner or supervisor, you should stay engaged with your staff. Make sure they feel valued and have some upward mobility if they desire it. And finally, get customer feedback, either through end-of-sale conversation, a suggestion box, an online survey, or all of the above. If customers feel that connection, they’ll want to continue their relationship with your business. It’s known as having “repeat customers.” They’re the best kind to have! In business, like in sports, teamwork is everything. They’ve proven to be the winning combination that helped Mandarin win Best Chinese and Best Asian in this year’s Best of Davis. Co-owners Gregory Skedros and his daughter Angel Skedros Manfredini and their team bring customers in from throughout Utah, and in fact, throughout the west. Mandarin has received awards from numerous dining publications and organizations through the years, has been listed among the Top 100 Chinese restaurants in the country, and was voted one of the top 25 restaurants in America by Treasure Leisure in 2013. “I watched the work ethic of my father for many years,” she said. “I used to ride my bike through the restaurant when I was a child. I saw how Dad was meticulous in making sure everything was just right. I’ve never worked anywhere else.” Gregory is 87, and he’s in the restaurant six days a week “from the time we open the doors in the kitchen each morning until we close each night,” Angel said. He owned a pharmacy on the corner next to the restaurant, which is located at 900 North 400 East. Angel said her father had originally planned on opening a GreekItalian restaurant at that location, but a partnership never happened. When a Chinese family moved to Bountiful at about the same time and befriended the Skedros family, the new plan developed. “It was just happenstance,” Angel said. “He had no knowln see “Mandarin” p. 15 THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT ...Mandarin would not be a success without our local following! “BEST CHINESE” Best of Davis 2016 “BEST ASIAN” Best of Davis 2016 Reservations (8+) and call ahead seating CLIPPER • THURSDAY, MARCH 24, 2016 BEST The Davis Clipper SERVICES O F D AV I S BEST CARPET CLEANING SERVICE — LOVE CLEANING BEST PLUMBER — RANDALL PLUMBING BEST HVAC SERVICE — HVAC CONSTRUCTION BEST AUTO MAINTENANCE/REPAIR SHOP — LODDERS BEST BANK OR CREDIT UNION — AMERICA FIRST BEST COMPUTER TECH/REPAIR — PRIME SYSTEMS BEST PET CARE — UTAH DOG PARK BEST FLOWER SHOP — WILLOW AND WILDFLOWER BEST INSURANCE AGENCY — JENNIFER BASSAREAR STATE FARM BEST SPA — SEGO LILY SPA BEST HAIR SALON — MAIN ATTRACTION BEST AUTO DEALER — RAND’S BEST GROCERY STORE — DICK’S BEST HOME CENTER — SOUTH FORK HARDWARE BEST NURSERY/GARDEN CENTER — J&L GARDEN CENTER BEST FURNITURE OUTLET — LYNN’S HOME FURNISHINGS BEST OF DAVIS 7 8 BEST OF DAVIS CLIPPER • THURSDAY, MARCH 24, 2016 America First: 77 years of serving Davis County BEST BANK OR CREDIT UNION America First Credit Union 21 Locations throughout Davis County 801-546-0411 americafirst.com America First Credit Union is proud to serve members in Davis County communities for 77 years. HVAC Construction has that distinction, something earned over the past 30 years. Owners Lee and Jodi Hugoe have thousands of satisfied customers who’ve turned to them for their heating and air conditioning needs. HVAC Construction can provide just about anything to make your home more comfortable— furnaces, air conditioning systems, humidifiers, air purifiers, and much more. “We’re a true family business,” said Jodi, whose two daughters have joined with their parents as part of the team. “We pride ourselves in how we take care of our customers, treating them the way we’d want to be treated, and we have a great staff, many of whom have been with us for many years.” HVAC started in a small shop in Bountiful, “without heating in the cold winters or cooling in the hot summers,” Lee recalled. The business continued to grow, then moved to its current location at 624 W. 900 North in North Salt Lake in 2001, when the Hugoes bought the property and constructed their building. The company specializes in new residential construction, improvements to CUSTOMER SATISFACTION HAS EARNEd HVAC Construction the Best of Davis award for HVAC service. existing homes, and with small to medium commercial properties. Service, replacement and add-ons can all be handled by HVAC’s capable staff. “We fabricate and make everything we install,” Jodi said. “We can custom make whatever a customer needs, and we’ve built a good relationship with many contractors.” No one likes to hear that their heating or cooling system needs to be replaced, and Hugoe says HVAC doesn’t try to sell customers something they don’t need. “Many times, systems don’t need replacement, only repairs,” she said. “We diagnose the problem and never try to upsell someone. It’s one reason why we’re great for second opinions—when you want a second quote.” She said that even in a crisis situation, HVAC Construction can often save customers a lot of money to get that second opinion. Often, a system just needs a cleaning or tune up, not a full replacement. HVAC also offers maintenance contracts to customers, and can help clients fill out forms for Courtesy photo rebates from manufacturers or utility companies. “We’re truly dedicated to providing the best possible service to our customers,” Jodi added. “If someone is getting an income tax refund, that’s also a good time to look at upgrading their systems.” They are a factory-authorized dealer for Carrier systems, one of only four in Utah. They also sell and install other brands, and can service all makes and models. Hugoe said springtime is the right time to do a check on your AC system, and of course fall the logical time to look at heating systems. “You can count on us to provide you with a system and solution that fits your family’s unique needs and since we’ve installed many systems in this area, we’ve earned a reputation for doing the job right the first time. But look at where that purchase has led. Today, he owns and operates 17 South Fork Hardware stores, including the store at 1075 North 500 East in North Salt Lake. He acquired that location when ACE Hardware went out of business, and it was a store Cam in particular wanted because he was raised a half mile away from it. “It was like coming home,” Cam said. “I used to run around and cause trouble in that area 45 years ago. They used to build campers in that spot. That’s one reason we really wanted this store.” Since he started South Fork Hardware in Huntsville in 2004, the business has steadily grown, due in large measure to Cam’s business philosophy. “We’re totally independent, probably the largest group of independent hardware stores in the western United States,” he said. That means he buys from a variety of suppliers, ensuring getting the best products available. “Everything in our store is all national brand, top of the line. We are quality, quality, quality. I can’t stress that enough.” Go to South Fork Hardware and you’ll see customer service the way it used to be—friendly, neighborly and knowledgeable employees who “are your home’s best friend,” as Cam said. “People come in with part of the largest independent hardware store family in the country, South Fork Hardware has everything your home and garden need. store manager cody with two of his staff members. Most people don’t realize how easy it can be to fix things or solve problems in their homes.” It really comes down to the nuts and bolts—figurative and literally. And you’ll not find a larger selection of nuts and bolts at any other hardware store. Plus, you can get the right ones for your project, because, Cam said, “I have a problem with people buying stuff they don’t need.” He also love plants. Cam graduated from Weber State in integrated studies, and one of those disciplines was botony. “I really understand lawns and gardens,” he said. “If you don’t use the right products on the right plants, you can make a big disaster really fast. So my staff of full-time employees are trained to help any gardener. It’s great for customers to have the confidence of knowing that when they walk into our stores, they’re going to get sound advice and help.” South Fork Hardware is open Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Stop in and say hello to Cody, the store manager. Along with them are myriad retailers all promising the latest and greatest products and services. One retailer stands out, and that’s why Prime Systems in Kaysville was voted Best Computer Tech/Repair in our Best of Davis 2016. Owner Keith Duncan has been working closely with his customers for 25 years. Since day one, he’s had a simple business philosophy. “We strive every day to bring our customers a real homey, family type feel in our store,” he said. “People feel comfortable here. They love to interact with our team. They know we have knowledgeable, friendly employees who they can have confidence in, and who will give them a great deal. It’s very welcoming here, something I’ve worked to instill in all of my employees.” Prime Systems works with small and medium-sized businesses, as well as with residential customers. You can trust Prime Systems’ selec- tion of desktops, laptops and tablets, and the company can build you or your business the perfect server to meet your needs. “I have a staff of 12, and first and foremost, we stress customer service,” Keith said. “That’s something seriously lacking in much of the retail world today — from big box stores to restaurants to just about everything. I’ve found a group of employees who embrace my philosophy — that taking care of the customer and always being there for them long after the sale is the most important thing we can do. Growing up in Bountiful, he was one of those kids who loved science and medical things, and “I actually liked going to the dentist. I loved getting my teeth cleaned.” As owner of Bahr Dental, at 460 S. 200 West in Bountiful, he serves his clientele of happy, healthy patients in a beautiful new office opened last year. He shares the building with his brother, Brooks Bahr, whose dermatology practice is next door. “We started out in 2009 on the corner of Orchard and 500 South,” Dr. Bahr said. “We then moved up on Medical Drive for two years before we built and moved into this facility.” He grew up in Bountiful; attended Bountiful Elementary, Mueller Park Jr. High and Bountiful High (a 1997 graduate); and his parents still live here. Dr. Bahr was the ninth of 15 children. When he finished his education and dental training (dental school at The Ohio State University), he wanted to return to the community where he was raised. “I really liked the idea of being part of a community, treating and helping people and watching families grow,” he said. “As a dentist, I don’t have to travel much, so I can live in one dr. christian bahr and his friendly staff will make your dental experience pleasant and comfortable in their beautiful new office in Bountiful. Photo by Tom Haraldsen/Davis Clipper place, have my children go to one school and be a part of this community for many years to come.” Bahr Dental is family-oriented. His practice offers most dental procedures except orthodontics. He does his own dental implants, crowns and veneers. All are porcelain – no metal. Dr. Bahr treats patients of all ages, and even offers soft laser for some treatments, along with a number of sedation options. He says there are five areas that he focuses his practice on to help his patients. First, “we value your time. If a patient has to wait more than 10 minutes in our waiting room, we offer a discount on treatment or give them a gift card.” Second, he says patients can expect the office to always been clean, bright and clutter free. Third, “we’re going to maximize your insurance. We are in network for most insurance plans, and we don’t want the reason for someone not coming in to our office be due to insurance.” Fourth, any treatment decisions are made in consultation with the patient, because “we communicate all of your treatment options in advance. No surprises.” And fifth and perhaps most importantly, Dr. Bahr offers what he calls the Bahr Membership Plan, an in-house program to help patients and their families who don’t have dental insurance. “We want to make treatments more affordable,” he said. “I have an amazing staff who saw this plan as a great program to offer our patients. We work with them and make their experience here comfortable in every way, including for their finances.” That comfort also includes blankets and pillows for patients, overhead TVs, even bottled water. Dr. Bahr and his incredibly welcoming staff can be reached at 801-295-5586. They’re all a big reason why Bahr Dental was voted Best of Davis 2016. 2 BEST OF DAVIS CLIPPER • THURSDAY, MARCH 24, 2016 CLIPPER • THURSDAY, MARCH 24, 2016 BEST OF DAVIS 21 PerformanceWest proud to serve community BEST PHYSICAL THERAPY PRACTICE PerformanceWest 1551 S.
