Watch What You Pack
These items are not recommended for storage because we cannot
insure them:
• Jewelry, coins, cash and collectables
• Items of intangible value
• Extremely fragile items (e.g. mirrors)
These items are never allowed to be stored:
• Liquids that are flammable, toxic or hazardous materials
• Illegal substances and firearms
• Food and perishable items
Protect the Contents
The universal error that all self-packers make is failing to properly protect
the contents in which they are storing. When this happens, shocks and
bumps received on the outside can pass through to the contents that are
not protected properly, causing damage. You should consider the following
suggestions when packing.
•
•
•
•
Use the original boxes to pack computers and other electronics. They are the
correct size and the original packing materials, if kept, will help ensure the safety
of the contents. These are packed with material that is already in place to absorb
the shocks.
Use towels, blankets and clothes to pack fragile items; this way use can pack
your clothes at the same time packing your fragile items. Bubble wrap,
newspapers and other items can be used also.
Make certain that items in the boxes are secure enough so that they cannot move
around inside. Use clothing, towels, blankets, or crumpled newspaper to fill
open spaces. This is so they are not bouncing around during transport.
2
Distribute the Weight
Another thing, do not over-stress the boxes; we suggest that you separate
your heavy items into multiple boxes. This will prevent you from breaking
your box and from getting surcharges for overweight.
Consider the following:
•
•
•
•
Don’t put all of your books in the same box.
Mix books and other heavy items with lighter items such as bedding.
It is also a good idea to place the heavier objects as close to the center of the
box as possible to minimize the risk of breaking the box.
Boxes weighing in excess of XX pounds cost you extra to store. Thoughtful
packing will reduce the risk of damage and will save you money.
Secure and Seal Your Items
Boxes:
In constructing and sealing your boxes, pay close attention to the quality of the
closure. To insure a great performing box, we suggest the use of our tape or any
2-3 inch wide pressure sensitive plastic tape. You will need three strips of tape
for both the top and the bottom of the box to insure a durable box but do not,
under any circumstances use masking tape or string. Place a box label on it.
Carpets & Rugs:
Make sure your carpets and rugs are rolled tightly, secured with tape along three
points, and covered in plastic if you want to keep them free from dust. Place a
misc. label on it.
File Cabinets, Desks & Furniture:
Be sure to tape all drawers and shelves are completely closed and taped shut.
Cover the finished surfaces with plastic or cardboard to prevent minor scratches
during handling. (If the item can be disassembled, it will save on the cost) Store
any loose hardware in one of your boxes. Particleboard furniture must be
disassembled. Place a misc. label on it.
Futons:
The Frame should be broken down, (disassemble it as it was, when you
purchased it, this will save on additional costs) Then fold the
mattress in half and tape it, followed by covering the mattress,
if possible, with plastic. Place labels on both the mattress
and frame. Place a misc. label on it.
3
Refrigerators:
Unplug your fridge TWO DAYS before move out. Make sure your fridge is
completely defrosted, clean and dry at the time of pickup. Secure any loose items
inside of the fridge. Tape the door shut with a spacer between the door(s). The
spacer will allow air to circulate so that it does not smell when you get it back.
Bundle and tape the power cord to the back of the fridge, then place it behind the
cooling coils so it is not "dangling" on the ground. PLEASE NOTE: We reserve
the right to refuse pickup of refrigerators that have not been unplugged for a
minimum of two days prior to pickup. These refrigerators can potentially cause
mold and mildew damage to boxed items belonging to other customers. Make
sure the fridge is unplugged two days prior to the scheduled pickup to ensure our
team will be able to store the item and if the fridge has any fluid dripping from it
and we do accept it, you will face an additional charge for cleaning. Place a misc.
label on it.
Trunks, Footlockers and Luggage:
These don’t go into a box. Please make sure that these items are locked or
securely taped to prevent the contents from spilling during handling. Place a
misc. label on top and on the side as well.
Microwaves:
Microwaves are fine the way they are, we strongly recommend that you tape
down the glass turntable, tape it shut, tape the power cord on the back of the
unit. Place a misc. label on it.
Plastic Storage Bins-Drawers:
Plastic storage bins are allowed but not with casters, they must be removed and
placed inside the bin. It may be easier for you to roll around those items that way,
but in some cases the casters can break; therefore we will not be responsible for
the breakage of those casters. Make sure that all bins and bin drawers are taped
shut. It is advisable that you have the bins somewhat full with items that you plan
to store. Place a misc. label on it.
Plastic Yaffa Blocks:
We ask that these items be broken down to their original condition, to insure they
do get damage. Place a misc. label on it.
Plastic Egg Crates:
Fill these containers with items that you plan on storing. Place a misc.
label on it.
4
Bedding, Linens and Winter Clothes (soft goods):
Remember what we said before, use these to wrap around your fragile
items and cushion your boxes. This will save you money and protect your
items.
Computers and Electronic Equipment:
If possible use your original boxes to store these items. When using our
boxes make sure to tightly secure all contents. Cover monitor screen with
a sheet of bubble-wrap. We also suggest filling the box with towels and
bedding to make sure the items are not loose. Also label the outside of the
box “fragile” so our movers will be aware of that. If in box place a box label
on it.
TV's:
Smaller TV's (e.g.13") should go into a medium (3.0 cubic ft) box along
with soft goods to cushion (secure) it. An issue with 13" TV's is that they
are an odd shaped item, so putting into a box along with other items is
recommended The larger TV's (16" and larger) can be stored as is. We
recommend that the power cord be taped up (on the back of the TV and
perhaps a sheet of bubble wrap to protect the glass monitor). Place a misc.
label on it if not in a box and if in a box place a box label on it.
Lamps:
Small desk lamps can fit a box with other soft goods. Tall lamps can be
taken the way they are, but if the lamp can be disassembled it could fit into
a large box with other soft goods. Place a misc. label on it.
Fans:
The smaller desk fans can fit into a box. Box fans are fine the way they
are. The Tall Fans can be brought down the way they are. Place a misc.
label on it.
Vacuum Cleaners:
They are fine the way they are. Make sure that all attachments are taped
and secure. Place a misc. label on it.
Book Cases and Book Shelves:
Can be taken the way they are. If that item can be disassembled,
it will need to be. Place a misc. label on it.
5
Posters & Large Prints:
Combine these items and place them in a poster tube. We sell poster
tubes for your convenience. Place a misc. label on it.
Label Your Boxes Clearly
Pack and Stack Storage Solutions uses two types of labels. One is a Box
Label and the other is a Misc. Label. The Box Label is, pretty much straight
forward, it is anything that is in our storage boxes or other storage boxes.
The Misc. Label is anything not in a box or not in our storage boxes. These
Labels are both available under our Forms page; tab is located on the
bottom. Fill out the labels completely.
Once completed, affix the label on the top-left face of the box and on top of
the box. For items other than boxes, make sure the label is secure and
visible. Some items may be hard to have the label on but it is required for
storage. .
If you are using your own boxes, be sure any old addresses and markings
are crossed out and put our labels on them.
