KINGS SHARKS FORWARD JOE THORNTON NAMED 2015-16 SHARKS FOUNDATION "SHARKS PLAYER OF THE YEAR" Thornton Named 'Sharks Player of the Year' For Third Time Joe Thornton has been selected as the Sharks Foundation "Sharks Player of the Year" for 2015-16 in a vote by the Bay Area media. The award is given to the player contributing most to the success of the Sharks in the 2015-16 regular season. The award will be presented prior to tonight's game against the Arizona Coyotes at SAP Center at San Jose. It is the third time Thornton has been named "Sharks Player of the Year." Thornton was also named "Sharks Player of the Year" in 2005-06 and 2006-07. Thornton has posted 81 points (19 goals, 62 assists) and a +25 rating in 81 games this season. Along with ranking 1st on the Sharks in assists and points, Thornton currently ranks 2nd in the NHL in assists, T-4th in points, and 5th in power-play points (28). Since January 9, Thornton ranks T-1st in points (54), T-6th in plus/minus and has recorded at least one point in each of San Jose's last 32 wins. 2015-16 Series: Oct. 7, 2015 at Los Angeles: New Captain Joe Pavelski registered 3 points (1g, 2a) in 5-1 opening night win over Los Angeles. Martin Jones made 19 saves and the Sharks penalty kill went a perfect 6 for 6...Oct. 22, 2015 at SAP Center: Kings Center Jeff Carter recorded 4 points (2g, 2a) and goaltender Jhonas Enroth made 39 saves in a 4-1 Los Angeles victory...Dec. 22, 2015 at Los Angeles: The Sharks trailed 3-2 entering the third period and stormed back with a pair of power-play goals from Joe Pavelski and topped the Kings 5-3. Joe Thornton and Brent Burns each registered three points and Martin Jones made 32 saves…Jan. 24, 2016 at SAP Center: Los Angeles tied the game on a Vincent Lecavalier goal with 12.2 seconds left in regulation and Marian Gaborik won it in overtime as the Kings stole a 3-2 victory in the fourth meeting of the season between these two rivals…Mar. 29, 2016 at SAP Center: Joe Thornton scored the game-winning goal on the power-play, Justin Braun registered his first career two-goal game and Martin Jones made 30 saves as the Sharks clinched a playoff berth with a 5-2 win over the Kings… PLAYOFF MATCHUPS (as of 4/15/16) On top of his numerous accolades from this season, Thornton has surpassed historical milestones and placed himself in the company of NHL Hall-of-Famers. He currently ranks 14th on the NHL's all-time assists list with 963 assists, and 28th on the all-time points list with 1,340 points accumulated over his career. More so, amongst active players, "Jumbo" sits in 2nd place on both lists behind only Jaromir Jagr. Since he was traded to San Jose on November 30, 2005, Thornton has recorded the third most points in the NHL with 886 points scored (208 goals, 678 assists).
