It maybe be difficult to know when food is bad or good. All you know that it’s served to you and you think
it’s really good. It could be poisoned. Either that or you don’t know where it came from. It may carry
some diseases. There’s food in the fridge and it smelled a bit weird, but with curiosity you decide to eat it
because you’re so hungry. A couple hours later, you feel powerful waves of pain rumbled through your
stomach. They went away for a while, but not for long. That sounds like a case of food poisoning.
What is food poisoning?
Why does food poisoning happen?
Food poisoning comes from eating foods that
contain germs like bad bacteria or toxins,
which are poisonous substances. Bacteria are
all around us, so mild cases of food poisoning
are common. You might think the solution is
to get rid of the bacteria. But it isn’t possible
and you wouldn’t want to do it, even if you
could. Bacteria is sometimes good for us. It’s
confusing, but one things are for sure, the
bacteria in the rotten leftovers weren’t the
good for your kind. But you can learn how to
avoid those bad germs in food.
Food can be contaminated at any stage
during its production, processing or cooking.
Not cooking food properly (particularly
meat). Not correctly storing food that needs
to be chilled at below 5 Degrees Celsius.
Keeping cooked food unrefrigerated for a
long period of time. Eating food that has
been touched by someone who is ill or has
been in contact with someone with diarrhea
and vomiting. Cross-contamination is also a
cause to this situation. Cross-contamination
is the passing of bacteria, microorganisms, or
other harmful substances indirectly from one
patient to another though improper or
unsterile equipment, procedures, or
products. Cross-contamination can occur, for
example, if you were to prepare raw chicken
on a chopping board and don’t wash the
board before preparing food that won’t be
cooked (such as salad), as the harmful
bacteria can be spread from the chopping
board to the salad. It can also occur if raw
meat is stored above ready to eat meals and
juices from the meat drip on the food below.
How can I avoid food poisoning? Who can I
blame?
Foods from animals, raw foods, and
unwashed vegetables all can contain germs
that cause food poisoning. The most likely
source is food from animals, like meat,
poultry (such as chicken), eggs milk, and
shellfish (such as shrimp). To prevent food
poisoning, make sure that the food from
animal sources is cooked thoroughly or
pasteurized. Use a thermometer to check the
temperature of the food. Avoid eating raw or
spoiled meats and eggs before purchasing
and again before preparing.

Texting while driving is a really bad thing. You don’t believe me? The facts to be known,
about texting while driving is extremely hazardous and a lot of people don’t believe a lot
of people don’t care. Let us hit you up with some facts about texting while driving.
In 2011, at least 23% of auto collisions involved
cell phone, that’s 1.3 million crashes. The
minimal amount of the time your attention is
taken away from the road when you’re texting
while driving is approximately 5 seconds. If
you’re traveling at 55 mph, this equals driving
the length of a football field without looking at
the road.
There are a lot of things that can keep you from
driving safely. Here are the things you that
we suggest not doing while driving: Eating,
Grooming, and anything else that takes
your hands off the wheel.
13% of drivers age 18-20 involved in car
wrecks admitted to texting or talking on
their mobile devices at the time of the crash.
82% of Americans ages 16-17 own a cell phone.
34% say they have texted while driving. 52% say
they have talked on a cell while driving. Some
don’t think it’s a problem.
77% of young adults are very or somewhat
confident that they can safety text while driving
55% of young adult drivers claim it’s easy to text
while they drive. But it is a problem, teens who
text while driving spend approximately 10% of
their driving time outside of their lane.
“But adults do it, too!”
48% of young drivers have seen their parents
drive while talking on a cell phone. 48% of kids
age 12-17 have been in a car while the driver
was texting. 15% of young drivers have seen
their parents text while driving. 27% of adults
have sent or received text messages
while driving. Not to mention, drivers
of all ages confess to surfing the web
while driving.
Teens have the reaction of a 70-year
old when distracted while driving.
Crash risk is four times higher when a driver
uses a cell phone, whether or not its hands free.
Many states have instituted a ban on driver
hand held cell phone use (both talking and
texting). According to recent research, teen
drivers receive the most calls from their
parents, more than general calling patterns
would suggest.

Girls JV Basketball

Pg. 18
The JV team this year had a great start and that brought them many wins. The girls have
worked very hard this year and with the season winding down, hopefully they will continue
working hard to keep their winning record. Here is an update on:
The JV girl’s record this year is
12-9. They started out by beating
Waynesfield, Hardin Northern,
LCC,
Lincolnview,
Pandora
Gilboa, and USV. Also they beat
Paulding 34-24 and Laruen
Criblez had 10 points. Against
Jackson Center they won 36-31, Maddie McVicker had 15
points. Against Spencerville Maddie
McVicker, Kate Newland, and Lauren
Criblez all had 8 points and the girls won and
the score was 26-21. The girls had a really
good game against Ada and won by a
whopping 14 points. It was 43-29 and
Maddie McVicker had 12 points. In the
month The girls were not able to bring
home the W against Arlington, Delphos
Jefferson, Wapakoneta, and Botkin’s. They also lost
against Kalida, with the score being 5-31. Over break the
JV team took on USV, it was a very close game but the
girl’s pulled through and got the W. Then they took on
Paulding and won 34-24. Lakin Basham had 7 points,
Kinsey Helser had 2 points, along with Sydney Miller,
Lauren Criblez had 10 points. Maddie McVicker had 6 and
Kate Newland had 7 points. Perry and Spencerville were
their next victims and both games they played excellent.
Against Elida, they were
not so fortunate, they were
tied with 7 seconds left and
our girls fouled one of
Elida’s player and she
made both of her foul
shots so that put them
ahead by 2. Elida went home
with the W with the score
being 22-24. That game
Lauren Criblez was able to
knock down 8 points. On the
28th the girl’s JV team took on
Bluffton and won 34-20! Lakin Basham had 4 points,
Kinsey Helser had 2, Olivia Lawrence had 8, and Lauren
Criblez had 4. Madison McVicker had 10 points
and Kate Newland had 6. The girls had another
game that week and they faced Arcadia on the
30th of January. Lakin Basham had 3 points,
Olivia Lawrence and Sydney Miller both had 2
points, and Lauren Criblez and Kate Newland
had 7 points. Madison McVicker had 18 points!
The final score of that game was 39-29, with
our girls taking the W. On the 4th of February
the girls put up a good fight against Columbus Grove but
in the end they lost with the score being 41-19. The three
wins against Bluffton, Spencerville and Ada were huge
wins for them because those were three league games.
With those three wins and past wins they are 5-2 in the
league which is great. They played Shawnee on the 9th at
Shawnee and lost 38-34. They also lost to Cresview on
February 11th to end their season. The JV did a great job
at playing together and working hard but the girls would
not have been able to achieve all of
these wins without the help of
their coach, Madison Clark. This is
her first year of coaching JV and
she is doing a great job at it. Overall
the JV girls had a fine season with
their 12-9 winning record.

You may have seen her beautiful face in the hallway or teaching in the classroom but she
always has a smile on her face. Can you guess who that is? Well If you
guessed Mrs. Miller you’re right! Continue reading to learn more about her!
MRS.MILLER
Q: Before we start is there anything interesting
you’d like to say?
A: Allen East is not just a school or a job for me.
It is and has been my home and community
almost all of my life. This is a wonderful place
to grow up.
Q: What do you like to do in your free time?
A: Between teaching and my
children I don’t have a lot of free
time! I spend time reading and
attending my kids’ many games
and activities.
Q: How many years have you
taught at Allen East?
A: This is my 8th year at Allen East and before
this I taught at Kenton High School for 6
years.
Q: What’s your favorite part about teaching?
A: There’s a brief moment at the end of the first
day of the school day when I have about 3
seconds to look back on the day that I remember
the little things. I love when a student tells me
they like what we are doing or I can just see the
growth they’re showing. Kids are the best!
Q: What made you want to start teaching?
A: My mom was a school nurse and my aunt
and uncle both taught. They were always
telling me how much they enjoyed their
students. I also had great role models in my
own teachers. I wanted to do something where I
felt I could positively influence the community.
Q: After you retire, what would you like to
do?
A: I want to travel. We had our children
early on in life and missed a lot of time to
be selfish. So when I retire, they’ll be on their
own and I can focus on what I want.
Q: Do you have any advice for anyone wanting
to become a teacher?
A: Do it for the right reasons. The hours and
days may attract you to the career, but we put
in so much time and heart outside of the work
day that it can be exhausting. There will be
times you feel unappreciated and you just have
to remember why you’re there.
Q: Is there anything you’d like to add?
A: Be proud of where you come from. Your
environment shapes your interests, personality,
and future.

people and now we are just going our separate
ways. It is kind of sad
really.
Q. Do you have any
advice for
underclassmen who
think they want to
graduate right away?
A. Take your time, get
to know the people
around you, they do
not suck as much as
you think.
Q. What’s your favorite memory of this year?
A. I had a gathering with a
few friends. We spent the
entire time playing card games

by far my least favorite year

not get your homework done!

happy is usually not successful.
