Introduction Ethiopia International Mining Conference, under the theme Utilizing Ethiopia’s mineral resources as the engine for sustainable development, was organized by AME Trade Ltd in collaboration with the Ethiopian Ministry of Mines. The conference was held over two days between the 24th and 25th of September 2015 at the United Nations Conference Center, Addis Ababa. The objective of the Conference was to promote Ethiopia’s Mining industries and to create a forum to establish business partnerships. It was also intended to evaluate achievements and successes obtained in the mining sector and explore new opportunities. The conference brought together over policy makers, investors, industry experts, development partners and other key stakeholders in Ethiopia’s mining sector. The conference was sponsored by Ethiopian Mineral Development Share Company, Circum Minerals, Ries Engineering, Alex Stewart Assayers Ltd, Atlas Copco, Hagbes Private Limited Company, APM, Australian Government Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and Kefi Minerals Ethiopia. Three hundred participants from 22 countries attended the conference. 2. Conference Programme and Speakers The conference welcomed a total of thirty-two (32) speakers, eighteen (18) exhibitors and over 300 participants. The presentations covered a wide range of issues pertaining to Ethiopia’s mining sector. The objectives of the conference were introduced by the organiser - AMETrade. The opening ceremony was addressed by high-level government officials and a representative of the private sector. Following the official opening was several technical sessions. A summary of the programme and presentations is as follows: • Ethiopia is endowed with various mineral resources. The sector is contributing to the country’s economy by generating revenue, creating job opportunities and by supplying raw material for industries. The country’s potential is, however, underexplored and underutilised. • Ethiopia’s decision to open up the sector for foreign investment was regarded as a step in the right direction. Foreign companies are increasingly engaging in the exploration and development of mineral resources. The discovery of a world class potash deposit attracted huge interest from global mining companies. • The government’s commitment to develop the mining sector and address bureaucratic hurdles was commended by the participants of the conference. Mining laws, policies and regulations have now been enacted and revised to make Ethiopia a viable destination for investors. Incentives are now in place to enhance Ethiopia’s competitiveness. Ethiopia has comparative advantage due to the country’s 06 EIMC REPORT endowment of valuable mineral ores, conducive mining investment regime, social and political stability and less corruption. The conference acknowledged the conduciveness of the investment environment in Ethiopia. • The conference identified challenges compounding the mining sector such as lack of availability of local goods and services, poor infrastructure and shortage of market for products. As Ethiopia is new to this industry, accessing international finance was said to be difficult. The conference pointed out ways to overcome these challenges. • The conference agreed on the importance of corporate social responsibility. The practice so far is satisfactory but needs further improvement. Long-term strategic engagement in meaningful partnerships is proposed as a way forward to sustainably benefit the local people and enhance CSR. • The conference acknowledged the importance of formalisation of artisanal small-scale mining and gemstone industry in Ethiopia. Informal sources are characterised by poor social and environmental safety standards and make it difficult for the government to generate revenues. The need to improve policy and regulatory frameworks were discussed. • In order to further enhance the mining sector, the conference reflected on the need for collecting and marketing geological data, strengthening mineral management institutions, reform legislations and regulatory frameworks and capacity building to support the reform. • Ethiopia is one of the fastest growing economies in Africa. The mining sector is expected to serve as an economic catalyst and accelerate the country’s agriculture and industrial development endeavors. The conference called upon mining companies to make use of this opportunity and invest in the sector. • The conference in general increased awareness on mining potentials in Ethiopia and created a platform for dialogue between stakeholders 07 SPEAKERS OPENING CEREMONY Dr AREGA YIRDAW CEO MIDROC ETHIOPIA HON.
