MANY ROADS LEAD TO DALSLAND
There are many ways to travel to us in Dalsland whether you prefer bus, car, train,
plane or ferry. Here are some places that could be your end-destination or just a stopoff on your journey to somewhere else:
If you travel by train there are stations in Mellerud, Åmål, Ed and Vänersborg.
If bus works better for you, you should know that the public transport company Västtrafik runs services throughout Dalsland and express coaches to and from Dalsland.
There are airport buses from Landvetter International Airport in Gothenburg and
Karlstad. The airports in and around our region are Landvetter International Airport,
Trollhättan, Karlstad, Rygge and Gardermoen.
If you arrive by boat you have a choice of ferries between Gothenburg and Kiel in
Germany, Sandefjord in Norway to Strömstad, and Danish Helsingör to Helsingborg
or Fredrikshamn to Gothenburg.
By choosing the Öresund Bridge, between Denmark and the south of Sweden, you
can drive all the way. Like we said – many roads lead to Dalsland!

ALL OF SWEDEN
IN ONE COUNTY
Prince Eugen was right when he over 150 years ago called Dalsland – a Sweden
in miniature. Deep forests, mountains, fertile plains, white beaches, the canal
with its picturesque locks, vast bogs, lakes and the inland sea of Vänern with its
coastline and archipelago...all of which are present in Dalsland.
I congratulate you! You have in your
hands a magazine marketing most of
what happens in Dalsland 2016. You can
just pick and choose. The landscape is
not huge but it is packed with different
events and holiday possibilities to select
from. We like to boast that Dalsland is
all of Sweden in one county, or as Prince
Eugen once said “Dalsland – a Sweden in
miniature”.
WATER
Lake Vänern with 22,000 islands in stunning archipelagos, the flat plains in the
southeast, the hilly forest landscape reflecting a pure northern environment and
so the water. The abundance of which is
so prominent in the county. The Dalsland
canal system stretches over 250 kilometers and consists of lakes, ponds, streams
and so Vänern, our beautiful inland sea.
Glancing at the map of Dalsland, it almost
looks like an archipelago landscape. Yes,
here in Dalsland we are proud of our nature.
CULTURE
We are also equally proud of Dalsland’s rich
culture partially characterized by a strong
feeling for our native heritage such as the
unique Straw Handicrafts tradition.
However Dalsland is also known for international design courses at university level and
innovative places of art. All of which are advantageous for a prosperous cultural scene
allowing us to have events, exhibitions and
festivals all year round.
SELECT AND COMBINE
Nature and culture, there is always something for both body and soul. Browse through the magazine and be inspired. Hiking,
fishing, biking, boating, trolley, art walks,
canoe, food, book days, blues, trotting, elks,
museums, beaver safaris, industrial history, aqueduct, canal, swimming, camping,
manor house hotels, cottages, concerts, festivals, markets, flea markets, skiing, adventure, canal boats, golf, galleries, prehistoric
petroglyphs and riding are some examples
of what is on offer. Select and combine.
Check out all of the current events at www.
dalsland.com and please visit our tourist offices. We have always something that would
attract you so why rush around all over Sweden when you can have it all here?
Enjoy your reading and welcome to Dalsland!

THE DALSLAND CANAL
- discover one of the world’s most beautiful waterways
A tour on the Dalsland canal takes you to the heart of the most lake-rich landscape
in Sweden. The canal has over the years transformed from a transport route to a
much visited tourist attraction. It was only necessary to excavate 12km in order to
connect large and small lakes and create a 250 kilometer long picturesque canal.
There is something magical about the
Dalsland canal and it is not only the surrounding stunningly beautiful nature
that will enthrall you.
son, the man behind most of the railways
and canals in Sweden, was given the task
of finding a way for the canal to bypass the
rapids in Håverud.
The most astonishing thing is that although
it takes you between Vänern and the mysterious Lake Stora Lee in northern Dalsland the canal itself is only a few kilometers
long. The secret lies in Dalsland’s unusual
topography. The last ice age created many
long deep rift lakes and made Dalsland
Sweden’s most lake-rich landscape. Making
good use of these, only 12 km of the 250 km
stretch of the canal system had to be dug or
dynamited to link up these deep, clear lakes
to a single waterway.
THE AQUADUCT
Due to the prevailing ground conditions, it
was not possible to build an ordinary lock
mechanism there. The solution was a sheet
metal passage suspended over the waterfalls where the boats could pass. This was
to become one of Sweden’s most remarkable constructions: The aqueduct in Håverud. The aqueduct is 32,5 meters long and
the metal plates are connected by 33,000
rivets. The canal was officially opened in
1868 by King Carl XV.
ENGINEER SKILLS
The canal dates back to the 1860s when the
Swedish-Norwegian union parliament decided to link Dalsland’s long, narrow lakes
with Värmland and Lake Vänern. The idea
was to transport goods by water from the
steel and saw mills to Värmland.
In the 19th century an exceptional canal
construction was to be built which would
need special engineering skills. Nils Eric-
MOST BEAUTIFUL IN THE WORLD
For a few decades the canal functioned as
the goods transport route for which it was
intended but later the railway took over
and left the canal to pleasure boats, canoes
and passenger boats. The Dalsland landscape is so uniquely Swedish with an abundance of versatile scenery. You see idyllic
situated red cabins, pristine forests, picturesque lock settings and clear mirror like
lakes. A trip on the canal is a trip on one of
the world’s most beautiful waterways and
through a miniature Sweden.
Along the canal are a total of 11 guest harbours but also many natural bays if you
prefer that option. There are 31 locks and
17 lock stations bridging a level difference
of 66 meters.
CULTURAL HERITAGE
In May 2013 the Aqueduct together with
the locks in Håverud and Upperud were
declared as listed sites. A very pleasing and
important action as it assures that a particularly valuable and unique cultural heritage is preserved for future generations.
INFORMATION FOR THE SKIPPER
In order to plan a dream vacation with your
own boat you will need information regarding the canal’s open hours, fees and payment arrangements regarding locks, maximum height and depth, guest harbours and
so forth. Dalsland canal has its office location at the historical Kamrersvillan close to
the lock in Upperud. Information and contact details can be found at www.dalslandskanal.se.

How about a Canal Cruise?
A visit to Dalsland without cruising the
canal is like being in Paris without seeing the Eiffel Tower. You don’t need to
own a boat because there is an abundance of beautiful pleasure boats during
the summer season.
OUR CANAL BOATS & TOURS
A canal tour with passenger boats M/S Storholmen and M/S Dalslandia starts either in
Bengtsfors or Håverud – the boats go alternately from the two places. During the
summer they have scheduled tours and
through cooperation with DVVJ –Dal VästraVärmlands Järnväg – there are also opportunities to vary the round-trip by taking a
train one way.
M/S Storholmen has operated the canal for
8

70 years. With Bengtsfors as her home port
the boat is fully modernized and equipped
to pass through the narrow locks.
Even M/S Dalslandia is custom built for
Dalsland Canal. Her maiden voyage took
place in 1973 and she has room for 110
passengers, 10 more than her elder “colleague”.
M/S Nils Ericson af Håverud offers shorter
trips on the canal starting in Håverud and
passing the Aqueduct. Trips can include a
visit to Högsbyn, where a highly interesting petroglyph (rock carvings) area is well
worth the visit. Special theme evening tours
are also available.
All three canal boats have a fully licensed
restaurant on board. On the round-tour
sightseeing trips with M/S Storholmen and
M/S Dalslandia you can take the advantage
of booking a good homemade lunch when
ordering your trip.
Have you any special occasion you want
to celebrate – or is it time for a company
party? All canal boats can be reserved for
private use even in low season.
LET’S TAKE A DAY TRIP!
A journey on Dalslands canal consists of
passing through more than 16 locks. These
locks lift vessels 46 meters above Lake Vänern. If the tour is to begin from the south
of Dalsland canal it will start in Håverud.
Before your boat trip, take time for a stroll
through this quaint village to visit the Canal Museum and Dalslands Center where
you will find tourist information and exhi-

bitions, music events, glassblowing, crafts
shop and a large souvenir shop.
When the boat sets out it will pass through
the first gate which is lock number 4 followed by one of the canals few double locks.
It is an impressive sight to see the water
rush out of the slide gates!
THE AQUEDUCT & ROCK CARVINGS
Our journey takes us to the famous
aqueduct. The word is derived from Latin’s
Aquæductus which means the conveying of water. There is a rumor saying the
aqueduct is built from the same sheet
”A visit to Dalsland without
cruising the canal is like
being in Paris without seeing
the Eiffel Tower.”
metal as the Eiffel Tower. Not only is the
aqueduct unique in itself – this is the only
place in all of Europe where road, rail- and
waterway meet.
After the next lock we travel across the
deep Lake Åklång, followed by one of the
canal’s two manual locks. The journey
then continues out on Råvarpen Lake.
To the east of the lake lies Högsbyn with
Dalsland’s largest rock carving area.
STENEBY AND BALDERSNÄS
After we have passed Råvarpen we approach the first of six locks in Dals Långed;
Mustadfors. As we travel through the Dals
Långed and Långbron locks we are in the
neighborhood of Steneby – School of Craft
and Design which is an educational department within The Faculty of Fine, Applied
and Performing Arts of Gothenburgs University. We are also in the vicinity of Mustadfors Bruk AB, which is one of the world’s
leading manufacturers of horseshoe nails.
When we have travelled under the land
and railway bridge after Långbron’s lock
we find ourselves out on Laxsjön. To the
right of the canal is one of Dalsland’s most
beautiful places; Baldersnäs Manor, a historical manor surrounded by a huge English
park. Here you can enjoy lunch, dinner or
refreshments and even spend the night.
THE 18TH LOCK
As we approach the end of our journey we
still have one real pearl left. After the two
locks in Billingsfors we come to the eighteenth lock where a little red-painted cottage
surrounded by luxurious vegetation awaits
us. An idyllic symbol of the Swedish sum-
mer and probably the canal’s most photographed cottage. All that remains of our
cruise, before passing the final two locks,
is a narrow passage alongside Höljerudsforsen – a paradise for fly fishing. After the
final locks we come to Bengtsbrohöljen, the
boat trips final destination. Once we have
docked it is just a short walk to the next adventure which is a railcar back to Håverud.
TIP: SNÄCKE CANAL
Snäcke canal is a small detour on the
Dalsland canal which we would recommend to all private boat owners. The
canal consists of lakes Ånimmen and
Ärr, Snäcke lock and Strömmens lock.
Snäcke canal is not only beautiful and
scenic it also boasts having the canal’s
most enthusiastic lock-keepers. At
Snäcke lock you are welcomed by
Gunilla and Bosse who with plenty of
imagination and commitment create a
real lock paradise, especially for children. At Strömmens lock you can meet
Bernt who has been a lock-keeper
for over 25 years. No one has better
knowledge of the canal… and no one
can tell stories like him.

Håverud - Enjoy the Atmosphere
One could almost believe that all roads lead to Håverud! For whether you
choose to come by car, motorbike, bus,
bicycle, camper, train, shanks’s pony
(on foot) or boat you arrive in Håverud
and experience what we proudly call our
gem on the Dalsland Canal!
Obviously, we want you to familiarize yourself with the unique aqueduct and Nils
Ericson’s astounding technical solution of
a tricky logistic problem. What makes the
aqueduct so special is the meeting between
the waterway, rail and road, a subject that
has been photographed by so many visitors
over the years.

of Håverud and the Canal make a visit to
our lovely Canal Museum or why not take
a guided walking tour along the locks and
aqueduct.
CANAL HISTORY & CULTURE
The Canal Museum has been around for 40
years and highlights the history of the Dalsland canal. The exhibition is built around
living and working environments and displays collections from times gone by when
the village was seething with activities at
the ironworks, saw mills, shipyard, brick
kilns and pulp and paper mills. The museum displays an important piece of cultural
history of our part of Sweden and describes
the lives of the men, women and children
who used the canal from the 19th century
for agriculture to today’s paper mill. All
have lived a life on the waterways which
stretch from Lake Vänern in the south to
Stora Le in the north. The effective and artist-designed environment of the museum
contributes to making your visit an exciting
trip for the entire family.
ENJOY THE ATMOSPHERE
But there are also many other sights,
stroll along the quayside, visit some of the
friendly shops, see the seasons exhibitions
or listen to an afternoon concert. Why not

LOTS OF ACTIVITIES
Are you looking for an active holiday? Then
don’t forget to pack your hiking boots when
you plan your visit to Håverud – Pilgrimsleden (the Pilgrim Trail) is just a stone’s throw
from the lock area! Here it is possible to
hire a canoe and you can buy a fishing licence and hopefully catch a fish for dinner!
If, contrary to expectations, the fish are not
biting there are several restaurants in the
area so you won’t need to go hungry!

Can’t manage to see and do everything
in one day? No need to worry. In Håverud
there are several options of accommodation
that guarantee a good night’s sleep, allowing

DID YOU KNOW THAT...
The first postal boat in Sweden with its own
stamp was Laxen. It used the stamp with the
name Dalslands kanal between 1869-1870.
When the Dalsland canal was opened in
1868 there was not a single post office
along the route from Köpmannebro up to
Töcksfors. It was natural that some sort of
postal service should be established. After
making a business trip on the canal in 1869
the postal director general V. Roos drew up
a contract with the steamship Laxen and
this was approved by the King on 15 October 1869.There is no record of how long the
postal service was used but probably into
the early 1900s.

OUTDOOR
- world-class adventures all year round
Photo Roger Borgelid
Dalslands outdoor pursuits never end. The landscape is small in size
but between Lake Vänern’s unbroken horizon, Norway’s mountains,
Värmland’s forests, the cliffs of Bohuslän and Västergötland’s culture
there is a whole universe of variation.
Text: Marcus Haraldsson
Here is a lake system of absolute world
class, mountains and valleys, large and
small forests with shelters, tent sites,
hiking paths and day trips. If you have
boots, running shoes, bicycle or paddle
it doesn’t matter, there is something to
suit everyone.
DRAMA
Misty veils engulf Skackletjärn. A grouse is
heard in the distance. Was there anyone
who heard the wolves howling in the night?
You look out through the tent opening
towards the narrow tongue of land Södra
Öretjärn and a new exciting day. Soon coffee, breakfast, expectations and laughter.
It’s an early spring morning in Tresticklans
National Park.
Today’s hike leads you to Orshöjden over
rugged cliffs and narrow bogs. From Skaten it feels like you can see almost the whole world – at least well into Norway. You
imagine the past when this was a dramatic courier region between neighbouring
countries. Today it is Sweden’s largest undisturbed wilderness.
TRANQUILITY
The mirror like surface of the water is so
still that it feels wrong to use the paddle
again, upsetting the balance between the
lake and air. Instead, you hold the paddle
in the air, you stop and breathe, sit back in
the kayak, listen to the silence and just enjoy. It is midsummer night on the long, narrow lake Svärdlång, the whole sky is sublime pink in front of you and the kayak glides
slowly across the water surface. You are on
a night outing from the shelter at Trollvi-

den, possibly training for Sweden’s largest
canoe race which takes place here in just
two months, Dalslands Kanotmaraton +,covering 55 km. of the 600 km. lake system
of winding waterways. Suddenly a stately
black throated diver bird appears and turns
his striped neck curiously towards you, almost as surprised as you.
FRESH WATER SWIMMING
A final swim for the season. The rocks are
warm from the sun; you gaze over Lake
Vänern’s mirror like surface towards the
horizon in the east. Some sails are seen
in the distance as they move slowly in the
gentle breeze. An eagle soars majestically
towards the barren archipelago Krälingarna. You are on an afternoon walk in Yttre
Bodane, an archipelago of islands where
Dalsland’s forests meet Vänern’s powerful
but little-known coast. It’s the beginning of
September, the first leaves have become
yellow but the water is still warm.
TOUGH CHALLENGES
The whole world is yellow, yellow, yellow
and it’s hilly. Up and down, up and down
all the time. Shortly after the slalom slope
at Högheden you find yourself in thick forest and ride your mountain bike in the
direction of the aqueduct in Håverud. It
is tough cycling here and it was here that
possibly Sweden’s toughest bike race once
was held “Utmaningen” (The Challenge).
Few completed the course then but you
can take it easy as today you can walk and
bike. Pilgrimsleden winds between mountains, small ponds and crofts. Autumn is
here in earnest and it is the most splendid
October day you can imagine.
SPRING CAN WAIT
The cold bites your cheeks, it crackles
when the skis meet the snow. Each ski stick
sounds knojk, knojk. The snow is frozen on
the trees; it’s like skiing through a Christmas
fairy-tale by Elsa Beskow. You enjoy a pass
through the illuminated ski track at Hanebol
outside Åmål. Rösskogsbacken is tough but
there is good glide after the water tower. A
tour of 5.4 kilometers, then warm chocolate. Dalsland is enveloped in midwinter –
maybe you try skating on the ice tomorrow?
Spring can wait!

CANOEING

Best Canoeing Lakes in Europe
What is so special about paddling in Dalsland? One could maybe call it “wilderness
light”. In Dalsland you as a canoeist have
the opportunity to experience nature
close-up, wild and genuine. Feel like an
adventurer, find serenity and experience
privacy even though you are only 180 kilometers from Gothenburg and the closest community is not far away. Shelters,
toilets and dry logs for a warming fire are
always near and then not to forget the
appealing unique nature of Dalsland.
The DANO Lake District, otherwise known
as Dalsland-Nordmarken’s lake system, is
unique in many ways. The surrounding area
is characterized by a hilly landscape with
many deeply cut and narrow clear water
lakes. This is not a small territory either!
DANO District is an area of almost 10,000
square kilometers and reaches from Dalsland up to Årjängs municipality in Värmland.
There is a widespread system of innumerable lakes and watercourses linked together
by cross connections with Dalslands canal.
PERFECLY MADE FOR CANOEING
This is by far one of Europe’s finest lake
systems, rich in nature with clean air and
fresh water. DANO- Lake District is created
for canoeing. A large majority of the lakes
14
dalsland.com
are long and narrow with almost no waves
to speak of. When it’s coffee time and you
need some fresh water, just dip the coffee
pot into the lake. The water is crystal clear.
It is said that as a canoeist you come closest to nature. Almost silently you glide
forward without disturbing the wildlife that
surrounds you. You become part of nature.
NATURE CONSERVATION CARD
The lake system currently has over 100 prepared campsites, all equipped with wind
shelters, open fire pits, wood and environmentally friendly toilets. The service is not
only convenient for canoeists but contributes greatly to limit wear and tear in sensitive
natural areas. Campsites are made possible
by canoeists purchasing a Naturvårdskort,
Nature Conservation Card, and by doing so
can avail themselves of the camping facilities. By obtaining this card you contribute to
sustainable tourism and show that you take
a conscious responsibility for our common
resources.
The Nature Conservation Card can be
bought at all tourist offices and canoe rentals. In addition, there are rangers working
throughout the lake system which provide
information and help canoeists and boaters
on their visit. They also sell the Nature Conservation Card.
GUIDE BOOK
The guide book Paddla i Dalsland (only in
Swedish) is a comprehensive and richly illustrated guide to canoeing, the nature and
culture in one of Sweden’s most striking and
best developed canoeing waters. The described tours vary in length from two to four
days, the intention being that you can easily
shorten, extend and combine trips as you
wish. A canoeing map is sold separately.
NEW APP
FOR THE DALSLAND CANAL
The new guide to visitor’s attractions
along the Dalsland canal will help you
plan your trip. The app contains useful
information for when you are on or in
proximity to the canal such as
• information when travelling with
recreational boats, canoe and passenger boat
• the canals opening hours and fees
• attractions and accommodation
• information about the camp sites
found in our lake system.
The app is free and is available for Android and iPhone from the spring of
2016. Just now it is in Swedish. English
and German versions will come later.

Experience more – with Expert Tips
The canoe waters of Dalsland vary in
character and severity. There are opportunities for everything from idyllic to
drama, from cozy family outings to hearty physical challenges.
Dalsland offers narrow lakes where you will
never be very far from the lake shore. Safe
and peaceful if you are lucky or you can find
some more “social” paddling that will take
you past small communities and through
many picturesque lock settings. Here you
are part of boating on the Dalsland canal,
meeting people, pausing for an ice cream,
looking at art. In the northern part of the
lake system awaits more awesome scenery
- wild, sweeping and magnificent. Here the
lakes are larger and the waves somewhat
higher, the distances are longer and nature
is more striking. All of which is guaranteed
to raise your feeling of adventure.
EXPERT TIPS
When canoeing can be so varied, depending on what part of Dalsland you choose,
it is often a good idea to take advantage of
an expert’s knowledge. This is where our
rental agencies come into the picture. They
not only can give advice on which tour is suitable for you but they also ensure that you
get the right type of canoe and have with
you all the equipment you need. Also that
you have an enjoyable and safe paddling
experience as possible.

Outdoor competitions have never been
more popular and you get a lot of that
in Dalsland. Three big events are annually hosted here which really stand out
in terms of surrounding nature, great atmosphere, excited spectators and world
class organization skills.
ready mountain bikers. It’s the start of
Dalsland X-Country and about 800 mountain bike competitors set off in the beautiful Dalsland nature. Alongside lakes and
canals, over logs and stones, through meadows and in the forests the Swedish elite
compete together with athletes like you
and me. The more inexperienced biker
does the shorter 35 km race course, while
the well-trained and experienced rider takes on the demanding 57 km race course.
CAMP DALSLAND
Every year the association Camp Dalsland
hosts three top-class events which continue to entice athletes of all ages from Scandinavia, Europe and worldwide to compete
in Dalsland. Surroundet by fantastic nature
with all its possibilities Bengtsfors is a mecca for all fans of mountain biking, paddling
and running.
“Oh, what a sight to see the crowds turn
out when there are festivities around the
square in a small Swedish town like Bengtsfors. Hot-rod teenagers, dogs and children
cheered us on as if it was the World Championships - this alone made me an experience richer. I enjoyed every minute of my
2.31.46 result. That poor Norwegian who
won had to settle for 1:55:15!”

“I took part in the longer cycle race on May
2nd. I’ve competed in many, many different
races such as Vätternrundan, Grenserittet,
Vasaloppet (skiing), Göteborgsvarvet, Lidingölopp etc. But never have I experienced
such a wonderful spectator crowd as in
your race. At almost every house in the
forest sat people and cheered us on, quite
fantastic when you know that we were in the
last group of 10–15% of the race. I’m not
one for slogans, but you can brag about the
friendliest and the relatively largest spectator group I have ever experienced. The organization was very good too.”
Raymon Hansson, Tanumshede
DALSLAND KANOT MARATON+
No other canoe event in Scandinavia is greater than the Dalsland Canoe Marathon+
where about 700 participants from over 15
countries get together to compete. In 2015
there were representatives from 19 countries registered to participate in this race on
the water, easily described as paddling’s
equivalent to Vasaloppet.
The morning is somewhat magical. Meadows are full of kayaks, canoes and eager

participants who gaze out over the haze
that hangs over Laxsjön. Suddenly there is
a surge of kayaks and canoes into Laxsjöns
warm water while, at the same time, the
warmth of the morning sun clears the haze
before the starting gun is fired. Thousands
of canoe strokes stirring up the water is
the start for a 55 km long challenge which
does not end until 11 hours later when the
finishing line in Bengtsfors closes.
THROUGH FOUR LAKES
The race will take you through four long,
narrow rift lakes. Sometimes it’s like paddling straight into an illustration from a fairy
tale. All are enjoying the company, the atmosphere, and the surroundings, cheered
on by the best spectators you have ever
met. Some 200-250 officials ensure a smoth
and secure race so that everyone can feel
safe and well cared for during this epic test
for endurance. Both your body and mind
are really put to the test.
RELAY RACE 2016
In 2016, for the first time, you can paricipate
in the race as a relay team of four people
where each person paddles one lake each.

“Thanks for putting on such a great race
yesterday. It really was fantastic”
Sam Clark, New Zealand
Children run two shorter tracks while the
adults can choose between 9, 13 or 22 kilometers.
“Thank you very much for everything you
have done for us, it was a great race and
we all enjoyed it. Kids really want to come
back again next year!!!”
“Thanks for the best off-road racing competition! You are better than Lidingöloppet and Tjurruset by far, professional and
friendly.”
Natasha Kimberley, France
Carin Lindskog, Karlstad
“A big thank you for your super good race
and special thanks to all the volunteers. A
stunning good atmosphere”
“Thank you. A really good competition.
Keep the balance between perfection and
joviality”

Pedaling a rail trolley is exciting and
easy at the same time. Steel wheels roll
pretty well along the steel track and there is no chance of going astray either....
just follow the track.
Here you can pause anywhere and enjoy what the landscape has to offer. The
stretch between Bengtsfors and Årjäng
is 50 kilometers, not quite flat but no direct tough climbs. Trolleys can be hired at
DVVJ’s railway station, either in Bengtsfors
or Årjäng. The tour of the border area between Dalsland and Värmland is varied and
beautiful – not for nothing it’s called “The
Beautiful Scenic Railway”. You pass forests,
open countryside and several nice lakes on
your tour so, if the weather permits, it is a
good idea to bring along your swim-suit.
The second stretch is 10km long and follows the idyllic lakes from Forsbackabaden outside Åmål to Bollsbyn in Svanskog.
Trolleys can be hired at Daltrail. All trolley
tours can be combined with a canoeing
trip and transport can of course be arranged according to your preferences.
Close Encounters with the King of the Forest
Just on the outskirts of Ed, Thomas and
Conny Mossberg have created a unique
facility where everything revolves round
their favourite animal, the elk.
In the 10 hectares large enclosure are now
8 tame moose in natural forest areas that
offer plenty of cover, food and water. Here
the moose live as if they were in the wild and
they can withdraw and roam freely. However several times a day they curiously come
to the feeding station at the park’s entrance
because it’s feeding time. It is just then that
you as a visitor have the chance to get really,
really close to these mighty animals.
Meet the bull Älgert and his family and hear
Thomas and Conny share their elk adventures….and there is lots to tell about these
animals – that we can promise you! Did you
know that the moose is the world’s biggest
deer? That the moose can run up to 60km
an hour and that they have an extremely
well developed sense of hearing and smell?
Visit Dalslands Moose Ranch and get acquainted with the king of the forest. There is
also a small café and a shop with a large
collection of moose souvenirs.

Trotting, Races & Entertainment
Horse trotting has a long history in Sweden and Dalsland has been part of it from
the start. Here people have competed
with their horses since the 19th century.
Åmål’s racetrack is one of Sweden’s smaller
tracks with 11 racing days from April to September. Here local and visiting trainers and
jockeys mainly from Sweden and Norway
meet and take part in the competitions.
The most distinguishing feature of this racetrack is its friendly atmosphere.
Each year 20,000 visitors get together to
enjoy the beautiful horses, exciting races,
make a bet, have a bite to eat in the restaurant, and generally have a good time. If you
are lucky your wallet can be much thicker
on the way home. This year’s highlights include V 86 in June, Bluestravet in July and
The Right Way in August.
Åmål’s racetrack offers a wide range of activities with horses, which include various
forms of team events, children’s parties,
tandem riding and more. If you have never ridden a racehorse at full speed, they
promise an out of the ordinary experience,
customizing different events for both children and adults.
The sun is shining, the horses ready for
start, tension rises… Welcome!
Golf at Forsbacka.
Fooooore!
Dalslands three golf courses are found
in Åmål, Färgelanda and Mellerud. All
three are constructed to enhance the
distinctive Dalsland landscape.
ÅMÅL
Forsbacka Golf Club, 7 km west of Åmål, is
said to have one of Sweden’s most beautifully situated courses. The golf club has almost everything a golfer could ever wish for
featuring a golf shop, the newly renovated
club house, driving range, short hole course, a cozy hotel and restaurant. Forsbacka’s
scenic 18 holes park- and woodland course
is beautifully situated on and around Lake
Forsbacka. The first nine holes have wide
fariways with tough water obstacles. The
last hole reflects the character of a forest
course where challenges lie more in placing
your drive and approaching the green from
the fairway. The newly renovated Hotel Jägmästarflygeln (1747) offers 13 uniquely designed rooms with a total of 23 beds.
FÄRGELANDA
Dagsholms Golf Club is laid out in pleasant
surroundings adjacent to Lake Ellenö in Färgelanda municipality in southern Dalsland. It
offers not only a good game on an exciting
18-hole golf course but also a driving range
and a nice short practice area. The main
course has three different tees (46, 55 and
58) so you can choose which length of course you want to play. The fairways are fairly
wide with some park like holes and some
containing many exciting challenges with
narrow, tricky woodland sections.

FISHING
Laxtrolling on Lake Vänern. Photo: Dalsland Fishing
In the Calmest of Waters...
...swim the largest fish. Or was it the ugliest?
Whatever is true, both exist in Dalsland.
The biggest pike you can imagine and
the ugliest prehistoric fish the Fourhorn Sculpin, which incidentally is the
province’s fish symbol.
A SPORT FISHERMAN’S DREAM
Few Swedish provinces can offer good sport
fishing like Dalsland. One reason is of course the abundance of lakes in our region.
So whether you like spin-fishing, fly fishing,
action-packed trolling with a guide after salmon and pike or angling – Dalsland has it!
Here you will find river fishing, calm ponds,
deep fissure valley lakes and not least Lake
Vänern’s inland lake. The variety and diversity of species are huge. There are around
38 different species just in Lake Vänern.
SPINNING, TROLLING & FISHING
In the north and northwest of Dalsland you
24
dalsland.com
will find the beautiful, deep fissure valley
lakes with their crystal cold water inhabited
by full-grown Pike. You will also find salmon,
trout, char, perch and a few of the whitefish
species. The western region of our province
is great for fishing char, with Lilla Le Lake
and the three Kornsjö lakes among some
of the best. Spinning, trolling and bait fishing are ideal methods for these lakes. The
northeastern and eastern regions around
Åmål and Mellerud offer enormous fishing
possibilities having access to Sweden’s largest lake, Lake Vänern. Its coastline has an
abundance of various freshwater species,
plus the finest trolling in the region with its
full-grown salmon and trout.
PUT AND TAKE
Ängebytjärnet, 12 kilometers west of Åmål,
is a nice and well kept woodland lake
where you can catch char and rainbow
trout all year round. From April to November the lake is continually filled with new
fish. Jetties, wind shelters and campsites
have been conveniently placed around the
area.
SOUTHERN DALSLAND
The waters in Dalsland’s southern region
are often more nutrient-rich and are prime areas for fishing. The lakes Ellenösjön,
Viksjön and Långhalmen are great for catching pikeperch and also excellent for fishing carp, tench, chub, orfe, common rudd
and many other species.
As if that is not enough, the Dalsland canal
flows through a large part of the landscape
with its 250 kilometer long lake system,
linked by canals where many of the previously mentioned lakes and fishing areas
are found.
Fishing Trips with Expert Guides
Fishing, in enjoyable surroundings
should be an adventure, especially if
the fish are biting properly. Beautiful
nature, memories and excitement are
all well and good but most fishermen
dream of having their photograph taken
with the big catch or even taking the fish
home. This is where our expert fishing
guides come into the picture!
DALSLAND FISHING
Fishing guide Tommy Nerstrand, from
Dalslands Fishing, can customize excursions ranging from day trips to a package
with accommodations in a cozy cabin by
the lake or the convenience of a hotel.
Tommy is a full time fishing guide with
Lake Vänern as his home water, but he is
also an active fisherman in the larger lakes
Lelång, Östra and Västra Silen – all good
fishing spots. If the winds are too severe
on Lake Vänern you have the possibility
to launch your boat in one of Dalsland’s
calmer wilderness lakes instead and still
catch a trout or salmon!
TROLLING
Salmon trolling on Lake Vänern is often called the Nordic regions ”Big Game Fishing”
- not surprising considering the giant salmon that can be caught here. If the dream
of catching the Big One on Lake Vänern is
tempting there are tours that depart from
Sunnanå, Tösse or Åmål harbours. A trolling
tour usually takes about seven hours. All
equipment needed is on-board and included in the price. The boat Tommy uses is a
McLay 720 Hardtop Cabin Cruiser with plen-
ty of room for four passengers and guide.
SPORT FISHING DALSLAND
About five years ago Andy van Assema started up his company Sportfishing Dalsland.
He specializes in organizing spin fishing
tours for pike in lakes mostly in eastern Dalsland such as Ånimmen, Ärran, Käppesjö, Edslan etc. and Tösse archipelago on Lake Vänern. Other special arrangements are perch
and jerk bait fishing during early spring
when the pike swims into the shallow bays
to start feeding after a long winter. One of
the boats used is a Marcraft, an open cockpit
boat accommodating 3 people and guide. It
is specially equipped for spin fishing.
Both Tommy and Andy offer accommodation and boat hiring packages. They even
rent out fishing boats and motors.

Fishing Tips & Rules
The Right of Public Access (Allemansrätten) is unique. It gives Swedes and
international tourists freedom to roam
the woods and fields, using what nature
has to offer completely free – with one
exception. There are special rules regarding fishing.
In most lakes in Dalsland fishing with a lure
is permitted if you have purchased a fishing licence but there are exceptions. How is
one to know what applies and where?
WHERE TO BUY?
Contact the nearest tourist office. Some offices sell fishing licences and if not they can
offer information regarding where licences
are sold. They can also inform you as to
which rules apply in their particular area.
LAKE VÄNERN
Vänern is the largest of all five lakes in
Sweden. A fishing licence is not needed
here when using tackle such as rods and
artificial lures.
COMBINED FISHING LICENCES
A lot of lakes demand that the fisherman
buy an individual licence for each lake.
There are a few areas in Dalsland where
fishing districts have gone together and
designed a multi fishing licence that applies to several different lakes. Bengtsfors
has a community fishing information guide and licence which allows fishing on 14
municipal lakes. For those who travel the
Dalsland canal with their own private boats a fishing licence is available

LAKE VÄNERN
- big and beautiful like the sea
Foto Björn Lindblom
Lake Vänern is not just the third largest lake in Europe but also a powerful inland sea with many contrasts and expansive views ending in
the horizon where sky meets sea.
Vänern is an amazing treasure for all
who love to experience sea life, an archipelago and water.
Tösse’s beautiful archipelago is an experience in itself. If you paddle a sea kayak
the archipelago is an obvious choice with
its stunning beaches and exciting coastline.
For the fisherman Vänern offers a large diversity with many different species of fresh
water fish which are a natural part of life in
the lake.
Vänerns fantastic environment can also be
experienced from the land, Åmål, Mellerud
and Vänersborg all have water on their doorstep. There are fine beaches and nature
reserves where you can hike on trails and
footbridges among the islets and rocks.
THE HISTORY OF LAKE VÄNERN
Lake Vänern was formed after the most
recent glacial period which was approximately 10,000 years ago. When the ice
melted, Sweden was covered with a longitudinal body of water creating a connection
between Kattegatt and the Bothnian Sea.
26
dalsland.com
The rise of land masses caused lakes like
Vänern and Vättern to be cut off from the
sea. The previous connection with the sea
is the reason why there are species in Lake
Vänern which normally do not live their entire life cycle in freshwater, an example of
this would be the Vänern salmon.
Vänern is divided into a west and east region by a strait between Kållandsö in the
south and Värmlandsnäs in the north. The
west region of the lake is called Dalbosjön
and the east region is Värmlandsjön. Lake
Vänern is Sweden’s largest inland lake,
Europe’s third largest lake.
MOORE FACTS
Here are some more interesting facts:
Surface area - 5,650 km2
Maximum depth – 106 m
Volume - 153 km3 of water
Drinking water – for 800,000 people
Number of islands and skerries – 22,000
Water renewal time – 8 to 9 years
Birds – almost 50 species of sea and wetland birds breed on the lake. Among these
are a number of threatened or near threatened birds of prey. This makes Lake
Vänern a nationally and internationally important area for many bird species.
Fish – 38 species of fish live in the lake all
year. The most common are the smelt and
the vendace.
Plants - Lake Vänern’s sea-like nature makes the shoreline vegetation unique.

The Beautiful Harbours of Lake Vänern
Lake Vänern, although an inland lake, is
more like an inland sea. An archipelago
of thousands of islands, islets and warm
smooth rocks, friendly beaches and reedrich bays, makes it a perfect habitat for
the Pike. Here you can also hear seagulls
yelling and the Black-throated Loon’s bewitching hoots. It is not difficult to find
a natural inlet but of course there are
friendly and well-maintained harbours
along the coast. Three of them are Dalbergså, Sunnanå and Åmål, all different
and each one with its own special charm.
DALBERGSÅ
The quietest of them is Dalbergså, a naturally sheltered harbor at the mouth of the
river. Once a safe haven for shipping and
freight boats today it is a picturesque, homely marina with an adjacent camping
where many visitors return year after year.
A must when you visit Dalbergså is a visit
to the local general store with furnishings
from the start of the 20th century. Here
you can have coffee in their cozy café before a visit to the Castle ruins of Dalaborg,
once a fortification built at the beginning of
the 14th century by Magnus Ladulås sons,
Valdemar and Erik. Want to see an elk? Just
south of the marina are intriguing Bronze
Age rock carvings, showing images of elks.
SUNNANÅ
Sunnanå was originally a small boats harbour but now it is modern and lively, providing full service for comfortable and worryfree boating. In the area is a beautiful park,
a convenience store in an old warehouse,
a playground/bathing place, grill facilities,
a boule court and not least the cozy Sunnanå restaurant. With lovely views over
the harbour and Lake Vänern the restaurant caters for everything from coffee and
home-made biscuits to á la carte and also
organizes dance and troubadour evenings.
It is also possible to rent a bike and cycle up
to Mellerud, a pleasant town with a pharmacy, liquor store, supermarkets and small
boutiques selling everything from toys to
clothes.
ÅMÅL
In Åmål, Lake Vänern extends almost into
the town center and the popular marina is
only a stone’s throw from the square. As a
center for crafts, trade and shipping Åmål
developed into a prosperous small town
in the 18th century, and today the town
center has one of the best preserved 18th
century examples of wooden buildings.
“Sweden’s most friendly town” on the waterfront is welcoming and offers everything from shopping, music, art and cafés
to fishing and partying. There is a steady
stream of events, both large and small, to
choose from, but perhaps the annual Blues
Festival, reportedly Scandinavia’s coolest,
and the annual “Book Days” with seminars
and readings by well-known authors would
be worth checking out. Treat yourself to
the luxury of taking each day as it comes,
stroll around the charming town center,
have a coffee or just enjoy the beautiful atmosphere around the lake.

STAY ON THE LAKESIDE
- In Sweden’s most lake-rich landscape
7
We really can’t repeat it often enough: Dalsland is Sweden’s most lake-rich region. 11 %
of the province’s surface is covered by water. This is obvious of course when it comes to
accommodation as there is no problem to find a hotel room with a lake view.
The beauty of our hotels here in Dalsland is that they are a little smaller, a
little more personal and that most are
located on the lakeside.
HOTELL DALSLAND
Between the two lakes Stora and Lilla Lee
in Ed, about 13 km from the Norwegian
border stands the historic Hotel Dalsland.
Built in 1909, it got the present appearance
largely during the l930’s. Since more than
10 years Finn Brynildsen welcomes guests
from far and near. At Hotell Dalsland there
are no ordinary rooms, but all guests stay
in nice big terrace apartments overlooking
Lake Lilla Lee. It is easy to feel at home at

a genuine example of earlier architecture.
Åmåls Stadshotell is surrounded by beautiful wooden buildings next to the park Plantaget. The hotel, completed in 1904, is built
in the architecture of its time using both Art
Nouveau and classic architecture. Over the
years the building has been carefully renovated, maintaining its genuine style. The
hotel has a total of 29 rooms, each designed with their own individual charm.
ROJNES SJÖMAGASIN

Romantic
Baldersnäs estate is a cultural and historical treasure dating from the 18th
century but also a modern hotel with a
restaurant of high class, surrounded by
a lovely park and Lake Laxsjön’s sparkling water.
It was the iron industry in Dalsland that
formed the economical foundation for Baldersnäs, which was built out to a country
estate at the end of the 18th century by industrialist Carl Fredrik Uggla. The present
main building was designed in 1910 by the
owner Rudolf Lilljeqvist, an engineer, who
was a business associate to Alfred Nobel.
BEAUTIFUL LIVING
Just over a hundred years later, in 2011,
two new hotel wings were built nicely situated on both sides of the tree-lined walk
that stretches from the main building and
northwards. Baldersnäs can today offer a
total of 30 hotel rooms, 20 are bright with
32

Baldersnäs Estate
modern furnishings in Scandinavian wood in
the fine new wings and 10 rooms are located
in the manor house. The latter were renovated in 2015 and all have individual furnishings chosen with care and in a style befitting the manor. On top of this you get a view
of the magnificent park into the bargain.
ROMANTIK BALDERSNÄS
Baldersnäs Estate is a romantic gem in
Dalsland. The English Park was in its time
one of the country’s largest and foremost in
the romantic style and won even international renown. Then there were over 240 foreign species of trees, thousands of exotic
plants, bridges, walking trails and pavilions.
Certain areas of the original park can still
be seen today. It is wonderfull to see how
the open landskape blends in with the leafy
groves and hills. An evening stroll through
the park and out on the narrow land bridge
to meet beautiful Lake Laxsjön is guaranteed to be a wonderful experience.
SAY ”YES” AT BALDERSNÄS
Thinking about getting married? The romantic surroundings of Baldersnäs make it
a natural and popular place for weddings.
Each year many couples choose to get married or celebrate their wedding here. Say
“yes” on the shores of Laxsjön under a large
oak tree or in the romantic orangery. Celebrate the day intimately with your dearest
and closest relations and friends in the impressive manor or organize a larger party
with food, music and dance in the “Virkestorken”. Everything is possible!
RELAX
It is easy to relax at Baldersnäs. The manor
house is seclusively situated on a private
peninsula in the middle of a nature reserve.
Stroll around the park, take a walk to “Värdens Ände”, treat yourself to a romantic
picnic on Parasollholmarna or take a dip in
Laxsjön. The possibilities for relaxation are
many in both Baldersnäs’s beautiful natu-

ral environment and in the manor’s various
wellness facilities, the jacuzzi and the woodfired hot tub are found next to the top hotel
wing. Ideal is even the new lakeside sauna
with relaxation area at Laxsjön.
FINE DINING & WINE
In the Manor’s restaurant Chef Emil Öjentorp and his colleagues work primarily with
products obtained from the forests and lakes in the area. Local specialties, together
with seasonal ingredients stand in focus.
The kitchen’s five-course menus are very
much appreciated.
Want to learn more about wine? The hotel’s
sommelier will be happy to guide you in exciting wine tasting in the manor’s beautiful
wine cellar.
EVENTS & ATTRACTIONS
The list of annual events arranged at Baldersnäs is long and varied: Baldersnäs jog,
Hunting, Fishing & Forestry Fairs, Dalsland
Canoe Marathon, October Festival, Christmas Fair, concerts, veteran car shows and
art auctions...just to mention a few. A new
and exiting event for 2016 is the contest
OCR Ninja.
OCR NINJA
Obstacle Course Racing (OCR) is a sport
that seems to have come to stay. Competitors must, on foot, overcome various
physical challenges of the terrain in the
form of obstacles. To succeed in the races you need to run, climb, jump, lift, crawl
and overcome obstacles. OCR Ninja is an
international competition which will be
held on 30 April in the surroundings of
Baldersnäs manor. Are you interested in
trying it perhaps?
PRIVATE MARINA
The stately elm avenue from the jetty up to
the manor testifies that this once was the
main entrance. Today there is a guest jetty
with service building in the harbour which is
accessible via the Dalsland canal and around
30 leisure boats can be accommodated. The
boats which operate the canal in the summer have the possibility of calling in here for
passengers who wish to alight or board.
CRAFT ALL YEAR ROUND
Rian, the old granary dating from the 19th
century houses the Steneby Handicraft store. Open all year it has an extensive selection of handicraft products.
LANDRACE FARM
Baldersnäs Lantgård was opened in 2013.
A show farm for Swedish native breeds.
Get acquainted with sheep and goats, horses, cows, pigs, rabbits, chickens, ducks
and geese all of which have been part of
the Swedish farm life. Meet the animals

Upperud 9:9
A unique landmark refurbished
We are many in Dalsland who, with great
expectation and a great deal of curiosity
have followed a Dalsland entrepreneurial dream project emerge at the Dalsland
Canal in Upperud. We were definitely
not disappointed!
Along the Dalsland canal there have been
many industries that made use of the water power. In Upperud was formerly a roller mill where Tärnans wheat flour was
ground, packaged and shipped out in Vänern. The mill has been demolished but the
old five-storey grain silo still stands reflecting in the water.
During the past year, Kerstin Söderlund
and her family turned this well known landmark into a unique place that offers stylish
accommodation, good food and refreshments and a large function room, perfect
for parties and concerts: Upperud 9:9.
A COFFEE BREAK ON THE JETTY
You step into the large bright rooms through solid timber doors and find yourself
in the welcoming atmosphere of Upperud
9:9’s café. There are high ceilings and the
choice of furnishings and the cafés decor
highlight the building’s origin. In summer
34
dalsland.com
you can enjoy a tasty coffee and light lunches indoors or on the jetty. At Upperud
9:9 all food is homemade and of course
cooked from scratch on the premises. The
ingredients are local and organic as far as
possible and the menu is varied according
to the season. Gluten-free and vegetarian
options are always available.
STAY IN THE SILO
Even the accommodation at Upperud 9:9
breathes industrial history and, just like the
coffee shop, you are struck by the successful combination of original features blended
with functionality and modern design. You
actually stay inside the silo compartments!
The five rooms are located between rustic
silo plank walls. These unique rooms have
high ceilings and several beds are located
in the loft. Each room has four beds, WC/
shower, WiFi, kitchen and French balconies.
SUNSET AND MUSIC
Upperud 9:9 also arrange evenings with
music entertainment in the café and on
the jetty. The organizers often select their
favourite local musicians. Experience everything from blues, classical, folk music to
garage rock. These evenings are popular so
advance booking is recommended.
An extra bonus of Upperud 9:9 is the sunset which is usually quite outstanding out
over Upperudshöljens water.
LAND AND WATER
The position of the jetty allows you the advantage of mooring at the dock or pulling
up your canoe on land. If you are hiking
or cycling you can rest up and maybe take
a dip? It is even possible to launder your
clothes or dry out your boots. The staff also
fixes excellent food-packages.
Do you need tourist tips? The staff gladly
can inform you of the hiking and cycling
trails – with a little extra passion for the Pilgrim Trail.
MEETINGS IN DALSLAND
We call it the force of nature
For centuries in Dalsland meetings between people have led to exciting innovations and growing businesses. When we
meet each other in new surroundings
and in new circumstances outside the
office new energy and new solutions are
created.
When the Dalsland Canal was built most predicted that it would end in Håverud as one
would never be able to cross the falls. However, after meetings with people, Nils Ericsson
was able to convince them that it certainly
was possible to overcome the hinder by building an aqueduct. Suddenly mills and factories in Dalsland and western Värmland had
an uninterrupted transportation route to
the North Sea and hence out into the world.
THE FORCE OF NATURE
For meetings to be successful they must
take place in an environment that inspires.
Dalsland, with its forests in the wilderness
and shimmering lakes, provides these sur-
roundings. Take advantage of the unique
environment that exists here and let people get together in Dalsland! It generates
results. We call it THE FORCE OF NATURE.
ON THE WATERS EDGE
People are drawn to water. So has it always
been. Preferably, people build houses so
that it is possible to see the reflection of
water and choose a hotel overlooking water. Water provides an inner peace and
makes it easier to concentrate on what is
essential.
In Dalsland we have an abundance of lakes; so many that we want to share them.
Some of the long, narrow, sparkling lakes
are linked to the Dalsland Canal, others are
just there, somewhat magical. When the
morning mist lies over them one can see all
sorts of exciting things - a moose coming
down to quench its thirst, a beaver who
dabbles with its broad tail or even a fairy
dancing in the morning mist. Water gives
inspiration to accomplish great things. Yes,
we call it THE FORCE OF NATURE
OUR VENUES
There are good and appropriate meeting
places and locations in Dalsland. Conference facilities suitable for all needs regardless
if you are four or one hundred participants
or if you are attending for a day or longer.
There is plenty to choose from, not just
modern conference hotels but even guesthouses, hostels and other alternative venues that could be perfect for smaller groups.
It goes without saying that proprietors can
arrange additional exciting events and excursions, all designed to rally together participants.
We look forward to seeing you in Dalsland!

simply choose to park the camper – at least temporary.
Camping is not just a way to live it’s
rather a lifestyle. Enjoying simple things
like grass under your feet, no stress, relaxation and friendliness. Camping can
be waking up in a tent, caravan, cottage
or camper in a beautiful forest glade and
taking a morning swim. It can also be an
opportunity to meet new friends from
different countries in one the large family campsites – the choice is yours.
CAMPING AT LAKE VÄNERN
Örnäs Camping near Åmåls center, Vita
Sandars Camping outside of Mellerud and
Ursands Camping outside of Vänersborg
are examples of three somewhat larger establishments right next to Vänern. All three
sites have long, sandy beaches, surrounded
by an open pine forest terrain with excellent opportunities for jogging and walking.
The interest in these sites lies of course on
sun, bathing and all the other fun things to
do when you have Vänern direct on your
doorstep. All three camping grounds are
suitable for children; all have long shallow
beaches and activities on offer.
URSAND RESORT & CAMPING
Ursand Resort & Camping puts the family
in focus. The fabulous sandy beaches have
been complemented by a large activity area
for children and an adventure golf course.
Boat, canoe and bike rentals are offered as
well. The restaurant with its large veranda
by the water not only offers relaxation and
good food with a nice view but also an extensive programme of events.
SWECAMP VITA SANDAR
Vita Sandar is beautifully situated on one
of Vänersborg’s finest sandy beaches. Families with children love it here. The range
of activities offered is large and varied.
Have fun at any of the four playgrounds,
jump giant trampoline, play mini golf, tennis volleyball and boules. Other activities
offered are football and rounders on the
campground’s full-size football field, swim
in Vänern or in the pool or rent a family
sauna and as if this was not enough, you
can always visit the nearby golf course and
enjoy 9 (pay and play) or 18 holes.
SMALL,IDYLLIC GEMS
By Lake Vänern you will find a few smaller
and more peaceful camping grounds. One
little pearl is Dalbergsås Camping & Gästhamn, outside Brålanda, perfectly situated
in a quiet corner of Lake Vänern and adjacent to the inland sea’s open water. It’s a
homely, ideal place with hospitality and
room for both body and soul.
Kerstins Camping outside Mellerud is real
forest camping, small and comfy with pleasant camping cottages – in the middle of
nature.
CAMPING ALONG
THE DALSLAND CANAL
Dalslands Camping & Kanotcentral in
Bengtsfors, Laxsjöns Camping & Cottages

CAMPING & COTTAGES
Relax in our lovely cottages
Dalsland attracts many nature lovers
and active people who just love to choose holiday living where they can cater for
themselves. Some seek secluded simplicity with a wood stove and an outhouse.
Some prefer holiday villages or want a
little more comfort. There are so many
different types of cottages but if you are
lucky and find the right one for you and
your needs you are often quite happy to
return year after year. Or what?
A TREASURE AT LAKE VÄNERN
A real little gem in Dalsland you will find
about 20 km south of Åmål. Here, a good
distance from the beaten path, situated on
its own bay on Vänern is Rolfskärrs holiday
village. The cozy cabins are sparsely scatte-
38
dalsland.com
red on the small headland. You stay among
the pine trees and blueberry bushes, secluded from the neighbours and yet near the
strand with stunning views over Vänern.
Swim, fish, thrive and enjooooy!
The 15 red wooden houses were built
over 60 years ago by the Swedish Railway
Company as a recreation facility for their
employees. Rolfskärr is really the Swedish
Railways first holiday village.
A BLAST FROM THE PAST
Rolfskärrs Stugby would probably easiest
be described as a well-preserved small part
of the Swedish welfare state of the 50’s. As
a visitor you are struck by the charming
simplicity of the holiday facilities and how
the interiors of the cottages have a feeling
of the 50’s. Even if hand pumps for water
and the small underground storehouses
have, over the years, been replaced by running water and refrigerators the outside
toilet still remains. However, this is exactly
how the many returning guests want it –
simple and snug – a “blast from the past”
idyllic place in the center of Tössebäckens
archipelago with panoramic views of Vänern on the doorstep. The manageress
Gullan Nilsson rents out rowing boats, boat
motors and bikes. There is a barbecue grill,
playground, volleyball and boule court and
the whole area has Wi-Fi.
COTTAGE WITH A VIEW
Imagine a really cozy breakfast on an outdoor terrace in the sun - almost the best

holiday cottages in Håverud, you have your
breakfast on the veranda overlooking the
lake Upperudshöljen and Håveruds charming lock area. Here pass pleasure boats,
canoes and passenger boats which traffic

you happen to be in the front row or with a

Nils Ericson’s famous aqueduct.
The cottages were built between 2011 and
2014 and although of simple standard lack
very little. All are equipped with bathroom
and kitchenette and the majority have a microwave and TV.
HÅVERUD
Take a short walk from the holiday village
down the mountain and you find yourself
right in Håveruds historical lock area. Stroll
around, drink coffee or only watch people
passing by. There is much to discover here
amongst the area’s four locks. Visit the charming canal museum which in a captivating

A Taste of Dalsland
Genuine food craftsmanship is a dedication to food, creating unique products
with a taste, quality and freshness
which cannot be savoured in industrially
processed food.
Farms and food producers in the area
proudly offer a wide selection of local delicacies and items from home-made tasty
sausages, honey, apple cider, bread baked
in a woodfired stove, jams, juices and goats cheese to soft smooth sheepskin and
much, much more. Have an enriching experience by visiting some of them and fill
up your shopping bag with genuine home
produced food and wares. Let loose your
taste buds and enjoy everything which
has been grown, produced and eventually cooked in the cafés and restaurants in
Dalsland.
KLENGÅS
If you have never tasted a klengås take the
opportunity now. What is it? A bread cake
which is served with butter and shredded
cheese. In northern parts of Dalsland a special cheese, “mesost”, is used instead. It is
made from boiling the whey left over from
cheese production, drying it and then grating it over the bread.
40
dalsland.com
HAMRANE BAK & KAFFESTUGA
The best place to enjoy klengås, here with
plain cheese, is in the lilac arbour at Hamrane Bak & Kaffestuga outside Mellerud
where they have baked and served klengås for over 30 years. The baking of Dalslandskaka – the bread – is baking craftsmanship. The dough is rolled out by hand
and Britt-Marie Dahlqvist sees to it that it
is baked with great care in the wood-fired
stone oven according to Dalsland tradition.
GO ON A FOOD RALLY
Why not take a culinary trip? The association Dalslandsmat has produced a nice
Matrally brochure that makes it easy for
you to find all of the province’s food producers and processers. So venture out
onto the roads and follow the food rally
map which takes you around farm shops,
growers and dining options. Good food is
an important part of a holiday and here you
can find food as it should be, far away from
anonymous producers and food scandals.
Matrally takes you out on small idyllic roads
and what can be better when both the eye
and stomach are satisfied. Life simply gets
a little more comfortable.
On Evenstorps Farm, outside Brålanda,
Sofia Karlsson and her family mainly grow
organic raspberries and rhubarb but they
also have free-range meat animals and
children can pet the goats, sheep, chickens
and rabbits on the farm. Purchase local
products in the farm shop and enjoy their
delicious berry pies in the lovely farm café.
HUNGRY FOR DALSLAND
The food event “Glupsk” is a mixture of
food, music, art and culture experiences.
It takes place in August in the historic paper mill environment at Fengersfors Bruk,
where Not Quite, a cooperative for artists,
designers and artisans, has its base. Local
growers, bakers, brewers, fishermen, sausage makers, bee keepers and sheep farmers mix together with craftsmen, artists,
musicians and writers to create an effervescent atmosphere. All are united around
good high quality food and as a visitor you
are invited to take part with all your senses:
you can look, taste, smell, feel, learn and
just enjoy.
GLUPSK is just one of the many food-related events held in our region. Markets and
harvest festivals are other examples. It is
rumoured, for example, that the world’s
longest crayfish party will be held in Håverud 2016. Exciting!
A TASTE OF DALSLAND
Flavours of the Lakes, Meadows & Forests
Authentic food in an authentic setting.
The Dalsland cuisine has a lot to offer.
It would be strange otherwise given the
abundance of local produce from the lakes, meadows and forests that our chefs
have access to.
FALKHOLTS DALSLANDSKROG
In the old elementary school from the 20th
century is a gourmet restaurant that has
been awarded several gastronomic awards.
Carin and Christer Falkholt have always
worked with food and they are constantly
developing their food craftmanship skills
and drink expertise. Their food philosophy
is characterized by a healthy way of thinking
– excellent food which gives more energy
contributing to better health and quality of
life. Their environmental profile is obvious
and feeling strongly for local traditions they
are happy to share their ideas and thoughts
about your meal when they describe the
region and the origin of the food. Most of
their menu consists of seasonal game delicacies, freshly caught pike from Lake Vänern, smoked beaver, wild duck and wild
game – here it’s nature which determines
the ingredients in a meal. Falkholts wine
cellar, specializing in Bordeaux wines is
worth a visit in itself. Carin and Christer will
be happy to suggest which wine will best
accompany your meal.
STENEBY GRYTAN
It is liberating to find taverns that operate
in rural districts and not be ashamed of it.
Situated in the middle of the forest there
is nothing better than having the pantry
almost on your door step. StenebyGrytan
offer rustic food in a rustic atmosphere affordable, authentic Dalsland food with
high quality raw materials from the lakes,
forests and countryside. The menu is seasonal but elk dishes are available all year
and the bread served is home-made. In
the same building as the restaurant is the
Pike Oasis, a large fresh water aquarium
and nearby elk and deer graze in the Elk
Park. Have a taste of Kjell’s elk stew or the
kitchen’s good elk patties. A tip for beer lovers, StenebyGrytan has Dalsland’s largest
beer selection. You are guaranteed a total
experience of food, drink and environment
at StenebyGrytan.
HÅFVERUDS BRASSERI
At Håfveruds Brasseri on Dalsland Canal,
just steps away from the famous aqueduct
and locks, the menu revolves around seafood. Lars Lundberg and his staff serve exciting salmon dishes from their own smokehouse. The fish is processed by pickling
and hot and cold smoking in the classic way
using genuine alder wood chips. The Nordic
salmon comes from Lake Vänern but also
from fish-farms in the Norwegian fjords.
The brasserie’s fish soup is somewhat legendary, but of course there are also good
meat dishes on the menu for those who
prefer it. In the mood for something lighter
- there is a café and glass kiosk in the lock
area. So why not enjoy a salmon burger or
an ice cream with a parquet view of boat
owners maneuvering their boats – passing
through locks can offer both dramatic and
comical moments. Feel free to purchase
salmon from the Brasserie’s deli.
ROSELLMAGASINET
Directly on the lakeshore, Rosellmagasinet
clearly has the best restaurant location in
Bengtsfors. Marenko and his staff spoil
their guests with enticing food in a pleasant
setting. Inside, the rustic wooden walls and
dimmed lighting give a cozy atmosphere but
on fine summer days it is of course the large
partly glassed-in veranda which is a favourite with the guests. You can view the boat
traffic while enjoying all that Rosellmagasin’s
international cuisine has to offer. Be sure to
visit the popular pub evenings with musical
entertainment. Rosellmagasinet, built by
wholesaler Mårten Rosell at the end of the
19th century, is considered to be the oldest
building in Bengtsfors.
BRUKETS GODASTE
Good organic food, cooked with care, finesse and imagination is what characterizes both the Not Quite Bistro (White Guide
2014, 2015) and Brukets Godaste, the
wood- fired stone oven bakery at the old
mill in Fengersfors.
ÖJENTORPS KÖK
Öjentorps Kitchen at Baldersnäs Manor has
a slightly rustic but ingenious food concept.
This is based on food dishes and ingredients that guests recognize. Swedish fare
but refined, usually with an exciting, sometimes international twist.

CULTURE & ART
Dalsland’s diverse cultural life is characterized both by strong influences from
local heritage and innovative art centers where handicraft traditions meet the
desire to experiment. The province offers a large variation of exhibitions, concerts and cultural events throughout the year.
Art and culture include different aspects
and affect each of us in many different
ways, if only we take time. Here we present three of Dalsland’s main representatives of the arts and crafts industry
and local heritage culture.
DALSLANDS ART MUSEUM
Welcome to Dalslands Art Museum in Upperud, this is where art meets nature. The
Museum lies in the beautiful countryside in
the middle of Dalsland, only five minutes
from the aqueduct in Håverud. The lawn
leads down to Lake Spången, a part of the
Dalsland canal, with its own guest pier. The
building is built according to ecological
principals with natural material that blends
well into the surrounding environment.
The museum, which opened in 1995, has a
permanent collection of artifacts and artwork from Dalsland. There are also three
unique rooms set aside for temporary exhibitions. Every year the museum displays
12 different exhibitions with emphasis on
material-based art focusing on the dynamic meeting between nature and artistic
expression.
With such a large variation one always finds
a new exhibition or artist to add to their list
of favourites. In addition to the artifacts and
exhibitions, guests can enjoy the lake view,
beautiful park or the cafés cozy glass terrace. The museum organizes concerts, yearly
parties on Midsummer’s Eve and a fire and
light evening in November. Dalslands Art
Museum is open from the middle of March
to the middle of December. Please check
for current open hours and up-to-date information at www.dalslandkonstmuseum.

ties of Dalsland and souvenirs. Here you can
browse for a while and after shopping avail
yourself of the sightseeing possibilities in
Håverud, the aqueduct, locks, fish smoking,
canal museum, exhibitions and restaurants.
GLASSWORK IN HÅVERUD
Strategically situated, right next to Dalsland
Canal in Håverud is Dalsland Glasshytta and
Aqueduct Shop run by Johnny Persson, the
province’s only glass blower, and his wife
Ingrid. The workshop is integrated with the
spacious well-lit boutique so that visitors
can study at close range how Johnny turns
glowing molten glass into beautiful utility
and decorative glass. Visitors can even try
glass blowing under Johnny’s guidance – a
very exciting experience, especially for kids.
NOTE! This must be booked in advance.
OPEN-AIR HERITAGE MUSEUM
Situated high above Bengtsfors on Majberget with breathtaking lake views is the
open-air heritage Museum Gammalgården.
Here there are some 20 authentic buildings
which have been relocated into this cultural
environment. Then, as today, rural areas
were often brimming with life and this collection of houses shows us how people lived and worked in the past. These include
everything from the well-off farmer’s red
Dalsland house to the crofter’s timber cottage with a dirt floor. The oldest building
is the miller’s cottage from the late 18th
century and a unique building is the press
house for straw hats – straw still being
highly relevant to Majberget today. At Gammelgården is Scandinavia’s only straw craft
museum, Halmens Hus.
Everything is however not just connected
to folklore, Gammelgården is eminently a
living museum with a variety of activities
for the whole family. The Midsummer celebration at Majberget is magical. There is
a stage for entertainment from rockabilly
to sing-a-long evenings and Handicraft Day
where you can learn everything from plaiting straw, to the making of red paint and
tar burning.
30 YEARS IN THE SERVICE OF GLASS
This year marks the 30 year anniversary
since Johnny began practising his craftsmanship. Dalslands Glashytta will celebrate the
occasion at Dalslands Center with two exhibitions. One showing their own glass pieces
and one with a guest exhibitor consisting of
exclusive glass art from Målerås glassworks
with designers such as Mats Jonasson, Ludvig Löfgren and Morgan Persson.
THE AQUEDUCT SHOP
The Aqueduct Shop contains an attractive
selection of glass wares and other crafts
such as wrought iron, textiles, food special-

Centers of Creativity
Art, culture and craftsmanship in Dalsland have one thing in common. They
have respect for tradition, expertise
and quality, while there is also plenty of
drive and curiosity for constant renewal
and development. Ideas are born, art is
created and here future designers are
trained.
DISCOVER NOT QUITE
20 km from Åmål, surrounded by forests
and lakes, lies the old industrial district
Fengersfors. The factory’s proud industrial
area from the beginning of the 1900’s today
houses a large amount of activities, such
as artists and the arts and crafts cooperative Not Quite. Smiths, carpenters, photographers, potters, textile artists, painters and
other enthusiasts, together have created a
vibrant environment with shops, café/bistro,
boutiques, galleries and exhibition halls.
One finds a bubbling creativity here but also
a peace and quiet in a special atmosphere
that has made Not Quite a highly popular
excursion. A nice visit could start at the Bistro with a cup of coffee and one of their
renowned cheese sandwiches. Weather
permitting guests can enjoy refreshments
under a tree in the park. After refreshments,
count on an enjoyable sightseeing tour in
the beautiful buildings which house everything from historical industrial environment
to art exhibitions. Here you can visit Sanna
Wijks pottery workshop, Brukets Godaste, a

bakery with wood-fired stone oven and Not
Quite’s boutique and gallery. Open all year,
the gallery exhibits carefully selected works
of art large and small, genuine and fantastic.
The factory also arranges concerts, courses
and the chance to enjoy good food or a drink
at their pub- and theme nights.
STENEBY
Erland Borglund came to Dalsland in 1919,
school teacher from Gothenburg with high
ambitions and an enormous willpower. He
founded Stenebyskolan in 1934 which is located next to Dalsland canal in Dals Långed.
Borglund’s view on the importance of handicraft for human dignity attracted a large
quantity of people. These were thoughts he
shared with his close friend Carl Malmsten.
During this era of the school’s history there
were a variety of courses such as weaving
and braiding with straw, textile weaving, carpentry and forging.
Today Steneby is a creative cultural and
educational environment. Here you find
two schools: Stenebyskolan, consisting of a
preparatory and a vocational education, and
HDK Steneby, University of Gothenburg. The
two schools share a common ground in the
materials wood, metal and textile.
The school is large and the educational facilities are inspiring with impressive design and
a beautiful view over the lake. Steneby is a
meeting place for the public, inviting active
interaction in its art gallery, library with art
literature and magazines from all corners of
the world and a design shop where former
Steneby students sell their work.
THE HOUSE OF STRAW
Halmens Hus, the house of Staw, is a museum and a handicraft shop in Bengtsfors. The
museum is located on the top of a mountain
with a fantastic view. This is where you can
see the permanent exhibition on the history
of straw and how it has been used by different cultures and why straw has been so
important for Dalsland.
In the late 1800’s more than 100 000 straw
hats a year were exported throughout Europe and the USA. The hats produced in the
areas around Bengtsfors supported many
families.
Even today we have skilled craftsmen in our
region. Every year the museum celebrates
Halmens dag, Straw Day, on the first Sunday
in August. On this day our craftsmen demonstrate working with straw. Maybe you
would like to try your hand at it?
With tradition in mind and future goals in
sight Halmens Hus wants to preserve the
knowledge and technique concerning straw
handcraft and at the same time find new
and exciting ways to use this wonderful material. There are also a number of temporary
exhibitions throughout the year, lectures,
concerts and various special events. In the
crafts shop, there is a large assortment of
high-quality handicrafts in various materials.

Meet Culture in Nature
In Dalsland our cultural treasures are not
presented in a large cultural center as in
cities, no, culture is all around us in nature. Take a trip and visit our amazing
petroglyphs, discover Lästviks Gallery set
in beautiful pastures outside Dals Långed
and marvel at the creativity of Ortagården - the herb garden at Dals Rostock.
UNIQUE ROCK CARVINGS
As early as the Bronze Age Högsbyn, by Lake
Råvarpen, was inhabited by people. This is
witnessed by the remarkable and beautiful
rock carving area that extends all the way
down to the lake. Råvarpen was an important communication route at the time of
the carvings and on many of the peninsula
rocks experts have found traces left from
these ancient people. The most common
motifs are small shallow depressions and
carvings. Other common motifs are feet,
people, circles and ships. We do not know
why people in the Bronze Age made the
rock carvings. The most common interpretation is that it was part of a magical and religious ritual in sacred places where people
prayed to their gods. Gods who had power
over the climate and weather and therefore
also over the harvest, the hunt and fishing.
Today we cannot fail to be fascinated by
these carvings, even though we do not fully
understand what they mean.
The landscape around the rock carvings is
enchantingly beautiful. There is a tranquil,
solemn atmosphere over the slopes down
to Lake Råvarpen. Perfect for a stroll or perhaps a cozy picnic
LÄSTVIKS SÄTERI & GALLERI
The manor is an old Dalsland forest farm
house outside of Dals Långed which has belonged to the same family for generations.
The love of art and culture is evident throughout the entire farm, and its many activities.
In the manor farmhouse one finds for example a function room with its unique murals from 1858 designed by the rural painter
C F Pagander. Lästviks Galleri is housed in
the beautiful old grain warehouse, located
close to the manor farmhouse. Here you will
find exciting art of cultural enrichment. In
the downstairs gallery there is a craft shop
that sells high quality fancy arts and crafts. A
lot of different artists and handicraft artists
are represented with their jewellery, pottery
and glassware, textiles, sculptures and paintings. In the vintage store Birgit’s Wardrobe
you can find everything from exclusive designer garments to items from today’s clothing chains such as shoes, jewellery and
other accessories.
SPA HISTORY IN DALS ROSTOCK
A bit of lady’s mantle against wrinkles or
perhaps coltsfoot to cure a cough... In Dals
Rostock there is a beautiful and fascinating
herb garden with around 300 medicinal
plants that all have some form of use or in-
teresting story. Dals Rostock has an interesting background. Once upon a time, there
was a spa where people drank the local water to improve their health. The herb garden
is located in the old spa gardens and in a
couple of the old houses you find a summer
café and a museum rich in local history.
THE HERB GARDEN
The herb garden was created in memory of
Johannes Henriksson. He was a medicinal
herbalist who was active around the turn of
the last century. He produced large amounts
of plants for the Swedish pharmacies. The
herb garden is now run by the artist Kerstin
Ljungkvist, who for more than 15 years has
gathered information about plants and researched the history of principal Henriksson
and the cultivation of medicinal plants. She
has compiled the material in a book Nyttans Växter (The Beneficial use of plants).
The book is primarily a reference book with
interesting reading about more than one
thousand plants and their uses, past and
present.
KERSTIN’S STUDIO
Nearby the herb garden you can also visit
Kerstin’s Studio, a somewhat different and
exciting environment in the old parish hall.
The shop is open during the summer. Beside the studio outside is a beautiful and special greenhouse and porch where many of
the herb garden’s plants can be purchased.

CULTURE & ART
A Mix of Santas and Motorcycles
The history of culture can have many faces. Our countryside is full of interesting
museums. The museums for Santas and
motorcycles are two of them.
Patrik Stridh are the entrepreneurs of this
idea. Parts of their collections are displayed
at the Nordiska Tomtemuseet in a beautiful
old red brick building, a former brewery.
MEET SANTA IN MELLERUD
Santa Claus definitely lives in Mellerud – at
least his cousins and relatives of all types
do. Mellerud has a Santa museum called
Nordiska Tomtemuseet. Here you will find
a totally unique collection of Christmas santas, gnomes, tomtar, elves and pixies, big
and small, made of porcelain and other materials. The collectors Sten Torstensson and
FOR MC FANS
If you are interested in motors and motorbikes then Ed’s MC and Motor museum is the
museum to visit. In an area of about 1000
square meters a collection of 1050 vintage
motorcycles, mopeds and moped motors
from several different countries is displayed. It is worth mentioning that among the
motorcycles there is a complete and rare
collection of Swedish Rex from 1923-1953.
There are also foreign rarities such as Wanderer 1912, Cleveland 1919, Indian Scout
1927, Raleigh 1929, ... The list goes on!
The museum also displays a little over 70
chainsaws, 50 boat engines, 300 radios, an
assortment of model airplanes and a small
collection of antique sewing-machines.
AND THERE IS MORE:
The School museum in Årbol, the Heritage
museum in Åmål, the Doll museum in Vänersborg, the Textile museum in Dals Rostock,
Torstenssons Mechanical museum in Åmål…
A Wealth of Art
Creativity flows in the province and here
are many wonderfully diverse artists
and artisans. Maybe it is the tranquility,
the silence and the magical scenery that
inspires. Here you will find art that stimulates, disturbs and challenges.
VIEW ART WHERE IT IS CREATED
Art does not come about by chance. Annually, on Ascension Day holiday weekend
an Art Walk is arranged whereby artisans
open their homes, workshops and galleries
to the public. View their works and listen to
the artists describing what inspires them
and what thoughts they want to convey.
ART GALLERIES
It is possible to view art throughout the
year in Dalsland. Cultural centers and libraries offer a wide range of exhibitions,
as do Steneby Konsthall and Galleri Olika
in Dals Långed, Lästviks Sätteri in Steneby,
Galleri Carlén and Lilliestiernska Gården in
Åmål to name a few. Visiting an art exhibition often involves unexpected, exciting
and sensual encounters and if the gallery
is situated in a beautiful natural setting
you get the best of both worlds.
ANNUAL EXHIBITIONS
Art attracts a large public in Dalsland. This
is particularly evident during the summer and autumn exhibitions organized by
Dalsland Art Association showing works by
members of the Dalsland Art Society. The
summer exhibit in Steneby Konsthall always opens Sunday after Midsummer Day
and continues for about two months. The
autumn exhibition is held in Åmåls Konsthall except for every fourth year when it
returns to Steneby Konsthall and then all
Dalsland artists are invited to participate.

CULTURE & ART
Markets, Festivals & Gatherings
Anyone who is bored in Dalsland has
only themselves to blame. The province
is teeming with events around rural and
urban areas and during the summer
months there is such a wide variety of
activities it sometimes seems hard to
choose.
Fortunately tastes are different when it comes to spare time activities. Choose from
markets, music evenings arranged in our
beautiful churches, shows and theater performances, dances, festivals, exhibitions
of vintage vehicles, motor interested gettogethers, auctions & car boot sales and
much more. Information about “What’s on”
and when is easily available at www.dalsland.com and in the local newspapers.

ÅMÅL’S BLUES FESTIVAL
Åmål’s Blues Festival is today greater than
ever before and Sweden’s largest blues festival. It is always held on the second week-

end of July but actually continues during the
entire week. Following tradition, the festival
begins with blues from different scenes throughout the city, on streets, in stores and
cafés and on the squares and in the clubs.
Blues music is heard everywhere this week
in the summer town of Åmål, even at the
horse racecourse!
The blues festival attracts a large crowd to
Åmål vicinity. It’s a happy, loyal and faithful audience who truly love the music and
the feeling it delivers that gather in Åmål.
For current information about artists and
more, see Åmåls Blues Association website:
www.bluesfest.net.
ART WALK
Every year on Ascension Day weekend,
Dalsland is filled with art and culture lovers.
The Art Walk is one of the most popular art
events in Dalsland, gathering several interested visitors from near and afar. Every
year about 50 artists are participating!
Dalsland’s artists are extremely varied with
a number of different art forms presented.
Traditionally the Art Walk begins with the
opening of an exhibition where artists and
artisans are represented with one of their
works. Visitors select their favourites and
then embark on a cultural trip to meet the
artists personally in their studios and workshops. This year the exhibition is at Åmåls
Konsthall in Åmål. Information is available
at www.konstvandring.nu.
LITERATURE DAYS
Bokdagar i Dalsland, (Literature Days), has
been arranged since 2001. The event lasts
over several days and attracts visitors
from all over the country. It offers author
readings, exhibitions, seminars, books sales and more. During the year, other opportunities are also organised for readers
and authors to meet. Since the beginning
of Bokdagarna there have been an impressive number of well known authors as book

festival guests. Björn Ranelid has participated, as well as Märta Tikkanen, Birgitta
Stenberg. Ernst Brunner, Jan Guillou and
Håkan Nesser. At www.bokdagaridalsland.
se you can find the program for 2016.
MONSTER RACE
There is a smell of burnt gasoline and the
engine noise is deafening when Nössemark-Ed Offroader organizes its annual
Monster Racein Trolldalen, Ed at the end of
August. Around 5,000 people usually make
their way to Ed that weekend. It’s all about
massive vehicles with gigantic wheels and
thick tires that compete in various classes.
Trolldalen is the only permanent Monster
Racetrack in Sweden.
MARKETS & FESTIVALS
Spring and autumn mean market time in
Ed. Around 250 stallholders gather from all
over Sweden, filling the town’s thoroughfare with market stalls and goods. They are
the two biggest markets in Dalsland with at
least 10,000 visitors each. The spring and
autumn markets have been organized since 1948 and are now both a tourist attrac-
tion and a meeting place for locals. In the
summer time, a number of well attended
car-boot sales are also organized.
Across the region, other markets are held in
various forms and at different times. Åmålshälja is held every August in Åmål, it’s a town
festival with entertainment and a pleasant
atmosphere. In Färgelanda they celebrate
Harvens dag. The program includes markets
and entertainment. In the autumn Dalsland
is crawling with harvest markets and in December it is difficult to choose among all of
the lovely Christmas fairs.
KANALYRAN
Kanalyran (The Canal Festival) in Mellerud is
perhaps the largest of all town celebrations
annually held in the communities throughout Dalsland. Kanalyran is a three-day
event in the beginning of July with plenty of
entertainment for young and old. Everyone
can enjoy a wide range of stage performances in music and dancing, a parade through
the town center, talent competitions and
much more. The festival always starts in
Mellerud and ends I Håverud.

M/S Storholmen is not only transportation on the canal; it is an experience that only a ship over
100 years can give! She is the oldest operating tourist boat that travels the Dalslands canal and has been
loyal to the canal since 1938. Our tours pass through the almost 150 year old aqueduct in Håverud. We
are fully licensed and pamper our guests with high-quality service and good homemade dishes. We offer
tourist information and fantastic culture and nature experiences. We operate the canal from the 1st of
May to the 30th of September. Storholmen can be rented for company- and organization conferences as
well as social events.
