Explore all that Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts

January 9 to February 14
Passing the Torch: Artists Influencing Artists, Chaney Gallery
Students of the Bates Middle School PVA program
will be given selected works created by members
of The Artery so they may creatively respond
through a variety of mediums. The students of
Annapolis High School’s PVA program will work
closely with The Artery’s organizers, Emily Welsh
and Lindsay Zetter, to curate and construct
an exhibit within the Chaney Gallery that will
contain both the original works of art from the
cooperative’s members, as well as the artistic
responses from the Middle School students.
All That Art
Maryland Hall will host its 9th annual All That Art
auction fundraising event on Friday, March 7 from 6-9
pm in the Maryland Hall galleries. The event includes
an exhibition of more than 40 pieces of art in all genres
and an elegant reception with live and silent auctions
of art during the evening.
Hai-Ou Hou: Window Shopping Paintings, Martino Gallery
”I love fashion, I love dance, and I’m crazy
about Tango.” says artist Hai-Ou Hou. It is not
surprising that she would combine these interests
by designing clothing for Latin dancing. It is less
surprising that she would combine her passion
for fashion with her primary interest: plein air
painting. The results are seen in these most
recent works in the ever-expanding “Window
Shopping” series of paintings.

From March 27-30, the Annapolis Film Festival will
transform the city with internationally acclaimed
filmmakers, engaging guest speakers, panels and
discussions. This nationally competitive festival will
showcase all categories of independent film and
will offer various opportunities for community-wide

Zeuxis: Still Blue, Chaney Gallery
A traveling exhibition organized by Zeuxis, the
Association of Still Life Painters, featuring the
work of 25 artists who have produced still lifes
incorporating the color of electric blue.
Founded in New York City in 1994, Zeuxis
began as an association of painters exploring the
possibilities of still life—traditionally the least
prestigious of genres—in the post-Modernist
art world. To date, Zeuxis has organized over
forty exhibitions around the country. These
shows have included such notable guest artists
as Wayne Thiebaud, Nell Blaine, Lois Dodd and
many others.

Artstart: Spring Has Sprung Workshop
Artstart One is a multi-arts experience combining Kindermusik
and multi-media visual arts. Art projects are based on themes
within the Kindermusik class which joyfully explores things that
go like trains, boats, planes and our bodies through singing,
dancing and the use of instruments. There will be a short
break midway through the class for a parent provided snack. A
non-refundable materials fee of $80 including art supplies, and
Kindermusik packet with book, instrument and CD’s is included
in the tuition. The music component of the Artstart One class is
Kindermusik’s Our Time cirricula. Class is with caregiver. Please

Artstart: Merry Go Round and Up & Away!
Children will celebrate Earth Day by paying tribute to mother
nature while creating functional pieces of art for use in the
garden. Plantings will also be brought home for the family to
enjoy. Projects, which make great seasonal gifts, will be inspired
by the outdoors as well as stories, sounds and music. An earthy
‘seasonal’ snack will be provided. A non-refundable materials
fee of $15 is included in the tuition. Class is without caregiver.

This class is for children ages 2-5. Class is divided into two age
groups of 7-10 children. Artstart is a comprehensive multi-arts
learning experience for young children with Kindermusik as the
music component. All Artstart/Kindermusik classes employ a
holistic and integrated approach to education through the arts.
Artstart idealizes the delightful concept of “educare” - guiding
the child as a whole person.
Merry Go Round: The younger children will explore creative
responses to the preschool world through involvement in
multi-arts activities. Each day’s activities include Kindermusik,
art, dramatic play, workshop, story time and snack. This class
offers early-learning curricula in a broad setting, providing a
gentle and encouraging independent class for children on their
own. Children must be the age of 2 by January 1, 2014 and do
not have to be potty-trained to enroll in this age group.
Up and Away: The older children will expand the exploration
of their environment by adding details to concepts, working
with more skill driven art projects, increasing instrument
and vocal experiences and dramatizing their own sound
stories. Children’s books, toys and puzzles are incorporated
into the multi-arts activities to provide an element of playful
discovery. Students must be at least 3 years of age by January

Creative Kids
Through a unique blend of multi-level activities that includes
creative movement, vocal play, object and instrument
exploration, and a colorful literature component, your babyÕs
growth and development are stimulated and all of his/her
senses engaged. Kindermusik Village provides families a
special place for learning and connecting with other parents
and babies through music and movement. Emphasis is on
increasing awareness and aptitude as well as parent education
and having fun! A non-refundable materials fee of $35 is

Enjoy singing, dancing and exploring instruments through
music. Kindermusik Our Time focuses on the child’s healthy
emotional development as confidence, curiosity, self-control
and communication begin to emerge. Our Time recognizes the
need for both the freedom to try and the assurance of parental
support. Activities also include story time, sound imitation,
rhyming and object identification as well as experiencing
a variety of musical moods and timbres. A non-refundable
materials fee of $50 is included in the tuition. Materials include
double CD, instrument, books and carry bag. Parents please

Sculpting for Young Children

Basic sculpting techniques will be explored using various
clay bodies. Air drying, oven baking and kiln firing clays will

Using handbuilding techniques, students will explore their
own ideas to create in clay. Brightly colored glazes are used to

Metalsmithing for Children
Fused Glass Suncatchers for Parent and Child
Make a beautiful copper chain bracelet or other projects in
this fun kids workshop. Basic metalworking processes such
as forging, melting, bending, annealing and metal coloration

Parents and children will make several colorful glass
suncatchers. Children of all ages will enjoy arranging brightly
colored pieces of glass which will be heated in a kiln to fuse

painting for young artists. This class concentrates on color
usage and subject studies. The projects differ from the first

Fused Glass Nightlights for Parent and Child

Parents and children will arrange pieces of glass to make
colorful glass nightlights. The glass will be fused overnight in
a kiln and attached to a nightlight base that can be plugged
into any household outlet. Projects will be ready for pick up the

Students will concentrate on skills that enhance designs for
contemporary fashions. Inspiration for subject matter will be
discussed and includes famous designer’s work, terminology
for design and basic sewing. A “Fashion Show” will be held
on the last day of class. Work includes styles, colors, seasons,
fabrics, textures, and history of fashion. A materials fee of $45 is

Portrait Drawing Portfolio Development
This class is for beginning and intermediate level students. It is
a continuation from first semester with an introduction of new
skills, techniques and materials. (Students are not required
to have taken class last semester.) Preliminary drawings for
paintings will be covered including reducing and enlarging
images, color mixing and canvas types. A materials fee of: $45
includes a paint set, canvas, and all other materials needed for

portfolio. Students will create a series of charcoal or graphite
drawings, starting with the basic form and proportions of the

pencils, kneaded eraser. Strathmore paper and Generals pencils

This drawing workshop covers techniques and materials that
may not have been practiced by the student thus far. Lighting
effects form and composition will be covered through studies
of still life, human form and subject matter of the student’s

A materials fee of $45 covers all materials used in this class
including papers, pencils, charcoal, washes, and mediums. A

Teen Painting Workshop
This is a beginning to intermediate level class. Individuality
is stressed in this acrylic painting class and subject will be
the student’s choice. Techniques and materials will cover
color mixing, mediums, brush work and canvas prep work. A
materials fee for this class is $45. Students may bring their own
paints and brushes to class, please notify the instructor first. A
student Art Show will be held on the last day. This class is now

Figure Drawing for Teens
Ages: 13-16, Andree Tullier
Learn the basic planes/forms, proportions and anatomy of
the human figure. Drawing from life (clothed model) you will
learn techniques to capture the action of the pose. Working
in charcoal you will practice quick gesture drawing and move
into longer poses, studying form using light and shade with an
emphasis on composition. Referencing works of the masters
will be part of the curriculum. A model fee (TBA) is due at the
first class.

Figure & Portrait Drawing Workshop
Get a solid foundation in portrait and figure drawing to
enhance your portfolio and prepare you for college. Students
will create a series of charcoal or graphite drawings, beginning
with a tutorial of the planes of the human head, and
proportions of the human figure, and building up to longer
poses and more detailed drawings by the end of the day.
We will draw from a live model (model fees will be paid by
students on the day of class). Demonstrations and examples
will broaden the students’ knowledge. Attention to line, form,
shading, cross-hatching, and composition will be presented.
Materials: charcoal paper, vine charcoal, charcoal pencils or

Teen Wheel
Ages: 13-16, Jonnie Friedman
This 7 week class will cover basic techniques of centering
clay, throwing simple forms and transforming these into more
developed forms, such as vases, bowls and mugs. Glazing and
decorating techniques are also introduced. Class is suited for
beginners and those with some experience. Bring an old small
towel and lots of ideas. A materials fee of $15 is due to the
Maryland Hall Pottery at the first class.

This class is offered as an introduction to Musical Theater.
Students will learn basic musical theater dance, basic

Beginning Ballet 3: Pre-Pointe /Intermediate/
Demi-Pointe Strengtheners & Stretches
Students begin preparing the legs and feet for pointe work
through a combination of pre-pointe appropriate physical
therapy (PT) exercises and ballet technique. Students will
work with therabands and other PT props to strengthen the
appropriate muscles in the legs, feet, back, and abdominals
to prepare students anatomically for the arduous work on
pointe. Students will begin this work in soft technique
shoes, but will progress to wearing pre-pointe/demi-pointe
shoes. The Director of the School will fit students in these
shoes via appointment at Dance Supplies, etc. in Severna
Park. Prerequisite: Mastery of Beginning Ballet 1 & 2 work, a
minimum of 2-3 years of ballet training and consent of faculty
plus 3 technique classes per week. Students must take a
technique class prior to taking pre-pointe/demi-pointe, so the
muscles are warmed up and prepared for the intense work of

An emphasis is placed on beginning barre building towards
centre pointe work. Prerequisite: Students must take three
technique classes per week in order to take point or via
discretion of the instructor. Students must take a technique
class prior to taking pre-pointe/demi-pointe, so the muscles are
warmed up and prepared for the intense work of these classes.
Students are encouraged to take this class twice per week in

completing the Demi-Pointe class in de-shanked pointe

the muscles, bones, and joints of the legs, feet, and back are
anatomically ready. Prerequisite: Three or more years of ballet
training, successful completion of Beginning Ballet 3 exams

A very direct form of intaglio, drypoint does not require the use
of acid, and involves drawing directly into a plate to create a
dark rich line. Copper plates will be used. The class will take you
through the basics of drawing with etching tools, inking plates
for different effects, soaking paper and using the etching press.
Bring a drawing to work from, approximately 8 x 10” or smaller.

Limited Palette Painting I

Oil painting can be very challenging and extremely rewarding
all on the same day. The options of subject matter, value range,
color, edges and surfaces can be exhilarating or create mud
on the canvas. Starting with a one-color palette, working up
to a prismatic palette, this class will help simplify some of
the mysteries of color theory and help the painter see value
relationships as never before. A limited palette almost ensures
color harmony in your painting since all secondary colors
are mixed from the same primaries. Since this method of
painting is helpful for all subject matter, a variety of subjects
will be used. Previous drawing instruction is required, painting
experience is helpful. The class will be most enlightening
to those who have been taught to paint with a full palette.

Portrait Painting with a Limited Palette
Anders Zorn, Rembrandt and many other great painters often
painted their subjects with a limited palette. Working with live
models, this class will explore monochromatic, achromatic
and prismatic palettes, and will simplify color theory allowing
the painter to take advantage of color, edges and surfaces in
a less complicated context while seeing value relationships
as never before. A limited palette also almost ensures color
harmony in your painting since all secondary colors are mixed
from the same primaries. Previous portrait drawing instruction

Expressive Portraiture Weekend Workshop
It is said that there are at least two people in every portrait—
the subject and the artist. The ability to find more expressive
means of portraiture is the focus of this class. A successful
portrait is more than a likeness in chalk or paint. It is a
representation of a warm, breathing being with a character
and a soul. Our role as an artist goes well beyond the ability
to represent the subject as a three-dimensional object
on a two-dimensional plane. Relying on anatomy and an
understanding of the properties of light from previous
instruction, this class goes beyond the structure of the subject
and explores methods of expression to better represent the
character of the model. Through lectures, demonstration and
discussion it will provoke you to explore new ways of looking

Impressionism

Celtic Slow Jam is a structured jam class that includes many
wonderful tunes (waltzes, airs, jigs and reels and songs from

include skills in accompaniment, use of bass lines, following
chord charts, playing by ear, knowing your tune types and

uke, guitar, banjo, flute, fidddle, pennywhistle, soprano
recorder, accordion, and bodhean. It is recommended students

What if my class is canceled?
Classes may be canceled if sufficient enrollment is not
reached by the start of the class. You will receive a full refund
including the tuition, membership and any additional fees.
To help ensure that your class will not be canceled, please
register early.
Maryland Hall doesn’t pro-rate classes.
What if I wish to withdraw from a class?
Membership, registration and material fees are nonrefundable. Tuition fees are fully refunded for canceled
classes. If you wish to withdraw from a class, there is a
$5 service charge and you must contact the education
department prior to the start date of your class for a 100%
refund of tuition.
• 100% refund for notification received at least 5 working
days prior to the start of the class
• 80% refund prior to the second class meeting
• 50% refund prior to the third class meeting
• No refunds will be granted after the class has met three
times.
NOTE: There is a $5 service charge for all refunds except
refunds for canceled classes. Maryland Hall reserves the
right to charge $35 for all checks that are returned due to
insufficient funds. Refunds may take up to two weeks to
process
Pick up & drop off procedure for children
under 12
Parents/caregivers of children under the age of 12 are
required to escort their children to and from class and sign
them in and out. Special pickup arrangements must be
communicated to the teacher prior to the class.
Inclement weather policy
Check the MHCA website at www.marylandhall.org for the
most up-to-date cancellation information. If county schools
are closed, MHCA will NOT have classes. If schools open late,
classes held before noon at MHCA are canceled.
Student Behavior policy
To ensure a pleasant artistic experience for all of our
students, we ask that they uphold the following Student
Behavior Policy
Students are expected to come prepared for and to
participate in class.
• Students are expected to treat the faculty, building and
fellow students with respect.
• Students are not allowed to possess or consume alcohol
or controlled substances in or around the building.
• Smoking is prohibited inside the building.
• Students who are consistently disruptive during class
time may be asked not to return by the instructor.

Maryland Hall’s theatre renovation project is underway! This summer MHCA restored the eight large windows
in our 850-seat main theatre. The 10-week project to restore the 1932-era windows began on July 15 and was
completed by mid-September. The window restoration project included the removal of all eight windows with
the openings covered with plywood. The sashes were taken off site and restored and then were returned in
sections. Because Maryland Hall’s building has a historic easement, all restoration and renovation projects must
be submitted and approved by the Maryland Historic Trust (MHT).
More than 200 original windows were replaced between 2004 and 2005 in Maryland Hall’s classrooms and
studios. The eight grand theatre windows and several other windows on the back and sides of the building
are the last remaining windows needing modernization. The window project is part of an $18 million capital
campaign to underwrite the renovations that will transform Maryland Hall into a professional, state-of-the art,
21st century home for the arts. The window restoration project cost approximately $215,000. See the photos

AT&T...
On Tuesday, September 24, at a special event with Maryland
Speaker of the House Michael Busch, Maryland Hall for the
Creative Arts (MHCA) announced a $25,000 contribution
from AT&T to support the Young Artists Apprentice Program, a
Maryland Hall program that introduces underserved high school
students to a variety of career options associated with the arts.
The program is part of Maryland Hall’s ArtReach Program.
J. Michael Schweder, president, AT&T Mid Atlantic, joined
Speaker Busch and Linnell Bowen, president and CEO of
Maryland Hall, for the announcement.
The contribution will be used to underwrite a two-week, all-day
2014 summer camp that will serve up to 30 underserved 9th
and 10th grade students who have an interest in or talent in the
arts. The camp will utilize Maryland Hall’s cultural programs to
teach students about career fields such as sound and lighting,
marketing and promotion, exhibit layout and design, theatre
production and arts administration.
