Dan Heims - Proven Winners
Over the past few years, the Heuchera craze has been gaining momentum as new and exciting colors spanning the rainbow have been introduced by breeders worldwide. Though some have showy flowers, it’s the foliage color that really steals the show. We offer Heucheras in shades of purple, red, yellow, near-black, silver, orange, green, and variegated varieties too. With all of this selection, there’s a Heuchera for everyone’s garden! Heuchera TRAITS: Heucheras are mounding plants with heart-shaped, rounded, or triangular lobed leaves. They tend to be evergreen in most climates. Sprays of tiny flowers ranging in color from cream to red are produced on tall, wispy stems that are excellent for cutting. CULTURE: Heucheras are easy to grow in flower borders, rock gardens, or containers. When grown in partial shade (preferably afternoon shade), they are most vigorous and have the strongest coloration. Plants grown in full sun or full shade will survive, but may be smaller and not quite as vibrant. Robust H. villosa hybrids are more heat and humidity tolerant. Start with good soil when planting, making sure that it is well-drained. Visit www.WaltersGardens.com for growing information. BREEDER PROFI LES Several important breeders have dedicated many years to hybridizing Heucheras including Dan Heims of Terra Nova Nurseries and Thierry Delabroye of France. We are proud to offer selections from these important hybridizers. Dan Heims Dan Heims of Terra Nova Nurseries, the name most people associate with the genus Heuchera, has been a self-proclaimed “hortiholic” since 1973. Following their first commercial introduction, Heuchera s. ‘Snowstorm’ in the late 1980s, Terra Nova has introduced over 550 new varieties, many of which are offered in this catalog. Two of Dan’s favorites are ‘Obsidian’ and ‘Peach Flambé’, available on p. 118. To learn more about the genus Heuchera, check out Heucheras and Heucherellas by Dan Heims from Timber Press. Heuchera ‘Paris’ still blooming in September! See p.118. 114 Heuchera ‘Peach Flambé’ PP17195 Heuchera ‘Obsidian’ PP14836 Thierry Delabroye Thierry Delabroye of France has been hard at work introducing many new H. villosa cultivars to market over the past few years. Beginning with H. ‘Caramel’, a golden orange selection, Thierry has hybridized Heucheras in a rainbow of colors and sizes. Both growers and gardeners alike have been impressed with their heat and humidity tolerance as well as their robust growth habit. Be sure to check out his handiwork on the next few pages.
