INTRODUCTION
“Own only what you can carry with you;
know languages, know countries, know
people. Let your memory be your travel
bag.”
Aleksandr I. Solzhenitsyn
Dear reader,
You are holding a special book in your hand that may open you
the door to unforgettable experiences. Please, do not mistake it
for one of those high gloss travel catalogues you page through
before booking an all inclusive holiday. The Summer University
is so much more than that; and I do sincerely hope this year you
will discover the secret of one of the most fascinating projects of
AEGEE. Once you lived it, you will never want to miss it again.
You have the choice to experience countries and places far beyond the typical tourism hot spots. You have the choice between
such diverse topics like language, history, photography, music,
sports, travel - but always under the premise of multiculturalism.
You have the choice to spend 2-4 weeks with people from more
than 20 (European) countries offering you the unique chance to
discover the life and fascination of one or more nations by taking
the perspective of its inhabitants. You do not come as a tourist
but as a friend.
Do take your time when reading this booklet and making your
choice. It’s an offer you shouldn’t miss and that should be used
wisely. Cause at the end, it’s all about overcoming borders, making new experiences and friends for a lifetime.
Many years later you will still look back at those incredible moments you spent during your youth: the time you learned the great
language of a minority; when you spent a day out with people
from Spain, Finland, Azerbaijan, Cyprus, Macedonia and more
as if it was the most usual; when you learned about the daily life
of your Dutch friend while listening to Hungarian songs and drinking Estonian liqueur. Take this booklet and make the first step
to one of the greatest memories of your life. Let it be the first item
to put into your travel bag and let the journey begin in your mind.
Regards,
Kamala Schütze

HUMAN
RESOURCES
Working Group
Due to the fact that AEGEE members are changing constantly,
experience and knowledge transfer between “new” and “old”
members is essential for ensuring the continuity and the success
of our organisation. In this framework, the Academy, together with
other AEGEE bodies, tries to contribute to the improvement of
the AEGEE Human Resources. Our aim is to provide AEGEE
members with the tools and the knowledge to develop the projects and challenges they believe in, in order to reach the main
goals of our association. In co-operation with external and internal
bodies we organise diverse and high-level training events and
promote the participation of our members in external trainings.
Academy is providing the Network with training materials and
other facilities, such as: the LTC package and other Internal Education documents, the Trainers database, the HR database. Regarding SUs, AEGEE – Academy is organising in co-operation
with SU Coordination Team a Summer University Project School
once per year. This is the event aimed at training the people that
will be contributing in making the SU Project better in the next
years. The SUPS is a one week training intended for people interested in Summer University Project that aims in giving tools
for participants for organizing a content-full and interesting Summer University. The Academy –Working for our Human Resources!

ENVIRONMENTAL
Working
Group
Environment and nature affects us all whether we like it or not
through weather, food chains, water, energy, wildlife and so on.
But being responsible and caring about the things around us doesn’t mean that we have to be hard-core „green” people, always
telling people what to do or not to do, it can be also part of fun
activities, summer adventures and discovering new places and
cultures. Just like last year, also in 2009 you can find some Summer University with green theme, either offering you some workshop, trips connected to environment and nature, or trying to
organise the SU in more environmental friendly way. AEGEE locals organising Green SU don’t only just offer you cultural exchange and summer fun, but also try to take some responsibility
towards our environment and our own future, these things can
be combined! Have a look into this booklet and find out how different locals have taken up this challenge, maybe you will be attending the SU that will be rewarded with the Greenest SU Award
in Autumn Agora 2009. But remember, that you as SU participants yourself can make your SU’s a bit more environmental
friendly, being an example for the rest of the participants, act with
respect towards local traditions and nature, try to learn something
from the places you visit, buy products made by small local producers, try to find more environmental friendly ways of travelling
(train, boat, bus), try to produce less garbage and don’t throw it
into nature.

This summer we welcome you to Karlsruhe, the hottest spot in Germany,
and you can make it even hotter! Providing a Pyramid in its center, being
shaped like a fan and being situated next to the Rhine makes Karslruhe
a unique place that everybody should have visited at least once in his
life. Karlsruhe is a "green city", nearly half of the area is covered by parks
and forests. Especially the huge "Schlosspark" in its heart provides many
possibilities for relaxing, sun bathing and leisure activities. Besides that,
Karlsruhe has a magnificent city centre with many shops and lots of
pubs, cafes and especially beergardens. The leisure program includes
the trips to Heidelberg (yes, with the famous castle), Strasbourg (including a visit to the European Parliament), a cycling tour through the picturesque Baden countryside, a visit to a wine festival in the Pfalz (a
famous winegrowing region), and of course parties and European Cooking. During the programm our group will be joined by another 10 (NonAEGEE) students from Italy on exchange. The starting date possibly
changes to 2.8.09. Please check online description.

century, we will also enjoy some famous unforgettable seventies feelings

There is a place where you can spend two weeks enjoying warm Mediterrean sun and having parties and beach activities all day long...If you’re
thinking about an event in Peter Pan’s island of Neverland the direction
is “second star to the right, and straight on till morning” but there’s an
easier way to reach it: applying for this event. You will have the chance
to discover Mt.Etna, the highest active volcano in Europe and visit the
most important cities in the west-coast of Sicily. You will breathe the

to settle their Magna Graecia colonies, featuring the ruins held in Katane
and Syracusae (Catania e Siracusa). We are about to lead you trough a
pleasant experience in which you will learn why Sicily is so different from
Italy, and maybe unique all over the world. Your agenda will be full of activities managed with the real Aegee spirit: no boring meetings, no never
ending lessons, but interactive courses and topics related to cusine and
traditional food and drinks; the idea and the history of Mafia, Italian gestures and many more. Our parties are famous in all Europe (ask to your
aegee friends if you don't believe it). Don't you want to discover how to
have party everynight? If you want to be part of the craziest event of this

Can you summon all your courage to face 1000s of years of culture and
tradition? Are you fearless of endless parties, wild fun and witless laughter? Can you handle the sun on a mythical island found in the heart of
the Mediterranean? Then, you might just have what it takes to join
AEGEE-Valletta’s crusade but BEWARE! Only the valiant and worthy will
be honoured! So come all you Knights and start your crusade in Valletta,
the capital city built by Knights. Journey back to the past of your successors along grid-lined streets and historic buildings, the majestic Grand
Harbour and the wondrously decorated Co-Cathedral of St. John. Alas,
the battle continues in Mdina, the silent city perched atop a hill boasting
a magnificent view of the luscious northern countryside. Dance the night
away in Paceville, the hub of Maltese nightlife and entertainment, where
knights and crusaders get up close and personal with Mediterranean beauties. Cross over to Gozo, Malta's sister island, and hide beneath the
boulders of the ancient giants, who built the world-famous temples at
Ggantija. Then stop in Comino halfway back to Malta and swim in the
crystalline waters of the Blue Lagoon. So do you think you can handle
it? Do you think you are brave enough? If you prove yourselves worthy
you will be knighted for your efforts by the royals of AEGEE-Valletta. Ladies and gentleman, the final crusade awaits its crusaders!

The Fortress City is Malta's capital city: the living, working, administrative

St. John, Valletta was completed with its impressive bastions, forts and
cathedral in an astonishingly short time of 15 years.
Mdina:
The old Capital city of Malta, a medieval town, with narrow quiet streets,
situated in the centre of the island, also known as the "Silent City". The
city displays an unusual mix of Norman and Baroque architecture, including several palaces, most of which serve as private homes. The Cathedral is worth visiting and is fronted by a large square.
Victoria:
Gozo's capital city is situated right in the middle of this beautiful island
acting as a crossroad between all villages in Gozo. In the heart of Victoria
lies the Citadel, which has been the centre of activity of the island since
possibly Neolithic times.
Blue Lagoon, Comino:
Indulge yourself in this little spot of Paradise on Earth! Swim in crystalline
waters while basking in the sun on this gem of an island in the Maltese
archipelago. And for the brave, why not visit the Red Tower in the heart

great, but NOW, FILL IT WITH NEW, BREEZY CONTENT!!! Austria and
Hungary aren’t just only the parts of the quondam Monarchy, but the places of splendid amusement! Retro TSU includes the craziest parties, an
amazing experience and the most brilliant places in the heart of Europe!
Burn your mouth with the hot Hungarian paprika, just in order to cool it
with the full-bodied Hungarian wine! We haven’t got a yellow submarine
but have a yellow tram, haven’t got a Superman, but a Hero’s Square;
haven’t got a lot of subway, but one of ours is the first on the European
continentdAfter Budapest we move to Balaton where you can be a part
of the vivid beach- and party-life...And travelling doesn’t stop!!! We will
carry on with the experience in Vienna, the city of music. Get into the
rhythm of the melody and let your feelings flow while getting seriously
creative! Lastly enjoy the different faces of Krems, when walking through
the old town surrounded by astonishing nature, where we´ll finish our
TSU history with a surely memorable “Happy end”!
114
Retro Monarchy: Rewrite history!
Budapest:
We'll meet you first in Budapest, a city blessed with vibrant cultural heritage, unforgettable Hungarian dishes (and girls), and a fascinating riverbank! Budapest, the capital of Hungary, lies in the centre of the
Carpathian Basin, divided by the river Danube into the hilly Buda and
the flat Pest. During its long history it was destroyed and rebuilt innumerable times and it still renews and transforms itself from day to day, greeting visitors with ever more to see. Each era has left behind its mark, but
the city has managed to maintain its magic and charm. The past and the
present live together in this exciting, bustling city, a mood equally amazing to visitors and those who live here.
Balaton:
Balaton, the largest lake in Central Europe, is the place where many generations spent their vacation and almost every family has a weekend
house on its shore. Many towns, such as Siófok, Keszthely, Tihany,
Hévíz... are famous for their night -and cultural- life. On a summer night,
the streets fill with the fever of the partying youth, who head towards the
shore in lines to join the craziness of the grooves on the Beach House,
the various concerts and party places.
Vienna:
Vienna is different – that´s the cities official slogan d the Austrian capital
was 2oo8 rated as the city with the 2nd best living quality of 218 cities
worldwide. Reaching from classical to modern architecture, Vienna is
most of all famous for its long tradition of art and music: dancing the
Viennese waltz, visiting operas and the yearly opera ball, theaters, classical music and many impressive museums as in the museum quarter where a great number of people enjoy long summernights in an artistic
open-air atmosphere. Truly, Vienna deserves it´s classified name: the
“city of music”.
Krems: Another lovely pearl along the Danube river is the city of Krems,
situated approximately 70 km west of Vienna.

116
Two Cities One Cup
Rome:
The capital city of Italy. Rome's history as a city spans over two and a
half thousand years, as one of the founding cities of Western Civilization.
Even outside of the history of the Roman Empire, Rome has a significant
place in the story of Christianity up to the present day, for it endures as
the home of the papacy. The worldwide Roman Catholic Church is administered from the Vatican City, run by the Holy See as an independent
enclave and the world's smallest sovereign state.
Albano Laziale:
Is a commune in the province of Rome, on the Alban Hills, in Lazio. Albano is located in the area in which, according to the legend, Aeneas's
son, Ascanius, founded Alba Longa. Today the coat of arms of Albano
still sport the white (Latin: Alba) boar dreamt by Ascanius before the founding of the city. Alba Longa was one of the main cities of the Latins and,
again according to the legend, the birthplace of Romulus and Remus,
the mythical founders of Rome.
Cagliari:
(Sardinian: Casteddu) is the capital of the island of Sardinia. Cagliari's
Sardinian name Casteddu literally means the castle that lies on top of a
hill, with a wonderful view of the Gulf of Cagliari (also known as Angels
Gulf). Most of the old city walls are intact, and feature the two 13th century white lime-stone towers, St. Pancras Tower and the Elephant Tower.
Carbonia:
Is a town in the province of Carbonia-Iglesias, Sardinia. It was officially
inaugurated on the 18 December 1938. For the tourists the main place
to visit is the former Serbariu coalmine, now turned in a museum and in
a site of industrial archaelogy. Another interesting place is Monte Sirai,
an hill in the surroundings of the city that hosts the ruins of a phoenicianpunic built-up area.

Sensperience stands for the Sensation and Experiences that we will indulge you with, whilst revelations are unravelled in traveling experiences.
Sooo, what senses will we stimulate? In order to stimulate your taste
buds we have included a wide variety of gastronomic activities. You'll experience some contemporary dutch style cooking like stroopwafels and
stampot and we'll also reveal some more progressive style dutch baking
that will stimulate your senses. In order to get that true Aegee'en travel
spirit going we will do everything from cycling to citytrippin. The program
is however far from restricted to the traveling between these cities. We
will reveal a diversity of cities in the Netherlands including our beloved
Amsterdam which you will experience by day as well as night. All this
traveling and more will be done in an assortment of ways. Hitchhiking,
cycling, trains and trams are just a few of them. The "NachtNet" trainexperience will be a special part of our program. In a country with so
much water the experience would not be complete without travel on
water, we will therefore take you on a short but special sailing/camping
trip. If traveling day and night isn't exhausting enough, we added a few
active and creative activities in the mix. So be wild and go action painting,
treasure hunting, biking and play "expedition robinson" games during a
relaxing day at the beach! We will be visiting caves that will require you
to activate those sedated senses. Use them to feel the heat! of the big
campfire on the beach at night, look carefully at beautiful and famous
Dutch paintings both on canvas and on the big screen, taste strange
Dutch stuff, like drop (shot) and last, but not least, listen to the waves
whilst enjoying a little BBQ on the beach!

A lovely night under the stars. The countryside in the Netherlands is really special and well known for it's water management. We live under the
sea level and we make land out of water. During our stay we will experience the Dutch water during day and night.
Maastricht:
Charming atmosphere in the south of Netherlands build by the Romans,
inhabited by carnaval freaks. Likely the oldest town in the Netherlands
where not only the SU will come to an end but also D'Artagnan came to
an end.
Aachen:
Even Charles the Great thought it was a great place to be and so will
you do. And for sure, there must have been a reason to make it his favorite palace. His cathedral and historical city centre provide the scenery
for a unique atmosphere, in a country where ground water is something
desirable.

124
Give me five!
Action 1. Lviv. Western Ukraine:
Founded in 13th century, is in the UNESCO list of World Heritage. “L`viv
is a little Paris”, they say. Living here is living in fairy. e.g., L`viv has a
castle, but it is possible only to feel it`s spirit, there is a river in our town,
but you can not observe it. As well as miraculous features of Lviv, we
will also experience an ancient part of town, where Baroque, Renneisanse, Gothic styles of architecture make our walk blossom, where hundreds of Lions (symbol of town) guard everyone and proclaim the
beginning of our game.
Action 2. Lutsk. Still Western Ukraine:
Would you like to visit a city that played a crucial role in the history of
Europe at times of the Mongol overlordship? The city that was a starting
point of today's united Europe formation (according to some historians).
Of course you woulddSo, WELCOME to Lutsk!!!
Action 3. Kyiv. The Capital. Central Ukraine. Golden Ukraine:
Kyiv, the crib of the whole Kyiv Rus, the city of total contrasts, where the
business part of the city coexist with the historical one, where a new a
Channel boutique can stand next to a shabby pub. And yet that’s what
makes Kyiv so real, so dynamic and diverse. From the historical point of
view a lot of churches are of great interest, the Golden Gates, numerous
museums, Andreevski Slope (a long street), the museum of Chernobyl.
Action 4. Dnipropetrovsk. Eastern Ukraine:
One of the key centers of the nuclear, arms, and space industries of the
former Soviet Union. The city is surprising green along the wide and
slow-moving Dnipro river and has remarkable embankments, long boulevards and spacious parks. It is also the major centre of high-technology
industries, education, machine-building, metallurgy and trade.
Action 5. Sevastopol. Crimea. South of Ukraine:
Here you will have an oppurtunity to travel to antiquity by visiting the
Chersonese, find yourself on the battlefields of The Crimean War and
World War 2, see summer residences of Russian stars. in Sevastopol
you will have the chance to relax, you will enjoy warm southern sun and
at sunset swim in healing water of Black Sea!

through the centuries ? we are sure we could find the solutions to these
questions after the end of our TSU... together with you! The "Renaissance code" will give you the chance to discover not only the main features of our twinned cities, both well known worldide for their historical
background linked to the Renassaince age, but also their secrets, their
hidden sides, walking and discovering step by step all our characteristics,
moving on our misterious ways.
126
The Renaissance Code
Firenze:
Nestled in the Apennines, cradle of the Renaissance, home of Dante,
Michelangelo, and the Medici, Florence is unlike any other city in the
world in its extraordinary mingling of great art and literature, natural
splendor, and a remarkable history . Come to discover it!!
Ferrara:
One of the best historical art city of the po river plain, suspended between two different ages: half dates back to middle age and half to renaissance period. Surrounded by wonderful city walls, nowadays the
most preferred green areas by the young people, the city offers lots to
see and visit, walking down its narrow streets from the biggest pedestrian
zone in Italy, and especially riding the most widely spreaded means of
transport, bicicles....and also to do and to live, from music concerts to
various recreational events.
Comacchio:
Comacchio, it also called “ small Venice” It is crossed by channels and
surmounted by bridges. Once these bridges served from medium to the
thirteen islets that constituted the same country. They represented reals
monuments. Nevertheless these are only a part of the historical wealths
of the town. Comacchio saw his maximum shine in the Renaissance period, as they testifies of it, for the note, his monuments.
Badia a Passignano:
It was founded on an isolated site reachable via a branch of the road
known in mediaeval times as the "strada senese del Sambuco", the route
to Siena preferred by the Florentines until at least the year 1200. The
Abbey of St. Michael Arcangelo to Passignano, one of the things with
more attraction, was already active in 1049. In the following centuries it
grew as castle and it became center of a flourishing community of the
Chianti that reached a certain political weight. Very suggestive the lake
next to the country, in which we will pass the evening for the barbecue.

You’ll start on Kiel where the sea reaches into the heart of the city. The
largest slice of nature in Kiel is the Firth for residents of Kiel, the maritime
view of the city with harbour facilities, the huge ferries and giant portal
cranes on the dock side is the best expression of their special feeling of
living and belonging here. It has a lively student’s scene and urban

harbour in the ears, the people of Kiel enjoy the advantages of a green
city with their own parks, ferries and beaches.

Hamburg:
Off you go to Hamburg, having the second biggest harbor in Europe

Our fairytale will take place in the Magic North, between the hundreds
of thousands of lakes of Finland and the swinging hills of Estonia. This
Fairytale will be told by You. You can be a princess in the castle of Turku,
a medieval knight by the old city walls of Tallinn, an elf kayaking on a
peaceful lake, or a child sitting on Santa's lap. During the two weeks of
our Travelling Summer University, you will visit Finland's capital Helsinki
and the country's oldest city Turku, Estonia's medieval capital Tallinn as
well as the popular summer holiday resort town Pärnu. Besides taking
in our countries' urban vibes you will also get to spend four days in an
amazing lakeside cottage in Finland. In Estonia and Finland people, nature and technology live hand-in-hand, so all our activities will be "Environmentally creative". This will be our motto for the Summer University.
You will get to express your photography skills, dance all day long and
play imaginary instruments. Experience with us the cities, forests, lakes,
the Baltic Sea and much more! A trip into two Nordic cultures is waiting
for you. Welcome to the Fairytale. The FinEst Fairytale.
130
FinEst Fairytale
Turku:
The oldest city and the former capital of Finland founded in 1229. It is
the fifth largest city in Finland with 174 000 inhabitants. River Aura gives
the city a special character: on warm summer nights its riverbanks and
boats are buzzing with life. Turku is surrounded by archipelago of nearly
20 000 islands and rocky islets. Because of their vulnerable nature these
islands are protected by UNESCO.
Helsinki:
The capital of Finland was founded in 1550 on the shore of the Baltic
Sea. The Helsinki Metropolitan Area is home to one million people. Helsinki is Finland's international gateway and it is a mixture of eastern and
western cultures. Many of Helsinki's main attractions are related to the
sea, including the Suomenlinna fortress (a UNESCO World Heritage
site).
Naantali:
The holiday town that you will fall in love with at first sight – and over
and over again. Naantali was founded in 1443 and it has just over 18
000 inhabitants. Each visit to Naantali offers you something new and attractive. Moominworld makes Naantali a top spot for children and families. The town's atmosphere is a mixture of the charm of the archipelago,
the diversity of history and the idyllic present day.
Tallinn:
Today Tallinn's medieval Old Town is under UNESCO World Heritage.
Tallinn is controversial: on one hand you have candlelit medieval restaurants and merchant houses in the old town, beautiful tree-lined parks
and the slapping waves of the Baltic Sea. On the other hand there is the
city that has been recognised for its forward thinking, state-of-theart services and thriving nightlife.
Pärnu:
The best known Estonian resort as well as a Hanseatic city, a harbour
city and a university city. However, the sleepy rhythm of Pärnu changes
completely when the flag of the Estonian summer capital starts flying
high on the summer equinox. Then you can experience beach life, dozens of festivals, night clubs and a huge party crowd. So what are you
waiting for – join us!

Once upon a time, a boy, named RODI, who was born in Izmir, was into
seeking a world-view. Once, after he had heard that the wines made in
ªirince were so delicious, he went to taste those wines that in time would
give him an inspiration in coming up with his world-view. Then, on the
way he was coming back to Izmir, he stopped by in Ephesus to see the
Temple of Artemis, which is one of the Seven Wonders of the World.
Suddenly, he realized that traveling all the wonders of the World had to
be his world-view and decided to go to Mausoleum of Maussollos in Bodrum. Afterwards, while he was visiting Mausoleum, the Aegean Sea
charmed him, thus he decided to explore the islands of Aegean and specially the graphic small island of Symi. There, an adorable Rhodian girl
named Izmira, ecstasized him and fell in sudden love at first sight. That
was the moment that his world-view took a shape. Consequently, Rodi
and Izmira lived till the end of their lifes in a small house in the old town
near by Colossus of Rhodes by swimming all day, dancing, enjoying the
wine and food and amusing their life and LOVE.

Spaindit is a country full of stereotypes. Our country, one of the most
important touristic destinations in the world, can’t let you be indifferent!
BUT...what do you think? Are those stereotypes really true? Or are they
just nothing but myths? For example.. Do you think we dance and sing
flamenco? Or sevillanas? Do you think that we have bulls in the street?
Or that we have bulls as pets? Do you think we often eat paella and
tapas? Do you think we have basically sun and beach as sights to see?
Is siesta something we do day by day? Fiesta too? And what about drinking sangria? Anyway, that’s life... isn’t it? You will get the answers for
all these questions and for many more during our workshops and adventurous activities. Are you dreaming of a SU which combines impressive mountains with lovely beaches, never-ending parties with cultural
visits? Wake up, this is reality! If you come with us, you will live our real
life. You will become more “eSpaniard”! Taste our food, our drinks, experience our customs, our way of thinking, definitely...our WAY OF LIFE!

Poor you! After a hard year of studying 24/7, spending hours in libraries
and sleepless nights learning your lessons, you forgot the essential: to
eat! Luckily for you AEGEE Toulouse and AEGEE Lyon have the perfect
treatment for you: FOOD! Cassoulet? Tablier de sapeur? Quenelle? Beaujolais? What do those words mean to you? Are they family names?
Bad words? After two intensive weeks for your stomach, you will be an
expert in French food and drinks, having experienced wine tasting, cooking lessons, enjoyed visits of traditional factories and BBQ parties. By
the way, it is hot in summer, you will need to hydrate your body. Let us
introduce to you some French language’s particularities: we never order
“water” but “pastis”, we don’t “drink”, we “take the apero”dand you will
too! Are you already checking on internet the meaning of these strange
words you have never heard about? Why not keep the surprise until
June? One hand grabbing your glass, the other one a steel ball we use
to play petanque, our most typical and traditional summer game; that’s
it, you’re almost French! But the way is long from Lyon to Toulouse. Do
you think we will let you go straight from one to the other without making
a detour via the French Alps or the Mediterranean? Already full? Need a
rest? Come on, as a dessert let's go to party and dance all night long,
the best way to digest! Which will you prefer: the cosy and romantic clubs
of Lyon or the crazy hot bars of Toulouse? You don't necessarily have to
choose, we will give you both! It's all you can eat...but how much can
you eat???
140
All you can eat!
Toulouse:
Toulouse is one of the most dynamic student cities in the south Ouest of
France. We call it the "pink city" because of the ocher color of the brick.
You'll appreciate there the very intense cultural life, with many theaters,
and concerts as well as exhibitions, you'll taste the traditional food, and
you'll admire the famous river Garonne which goes through the city.
Whatever you want to do will be possible in Toulouse!
Lyon:
The city of light is worth seeing, especially by night. Capital of the three
Gauls during roman times, Lyon became the heart of silk activity in
France, hence its two famous districts : the old Renaissance district and
the XIXth century popular Croix Rousse district, both registered on the
UNESCO world heritage list, where silk weaving activities were concentrated. Lyon is also very famous for its gastronomy, probably one of the
French most renowned.
Carcassonne:
Carcassonne is a city situated in south Ouest France and mainly known
for its beautiful " city", which corresponds to a medieval castle surrounded by magestic remparts, and many tiny and tortuous streets. The city
of carcassonne is registered on the UNESCO world heritage list. It's worthy to make a tour there!
French riviera:
Hot sand, blue sky and brown skins, the sea in front of you, what more
could you need? Maybe a drink?

TRANSsiberian Dream
Saint-Petersburg:
Cultural capital of Russia, Northern Venice, museum under the sky...Having a great history of Russian former capital for more than two hundred
years, the city hides many legends within the walls of majestic palaces
and summer residences. Come and visit the northern capital and you
will know what is special in St. Petersburg courtyards, how many lions
are in St. Peterbsurg and what the biggest problem is for lover couples
during the summer time.
Moscow:
The largest city in Europe, the most expensive city in the world.... People
either like it or hate it. Nowadays being not a “typical” Russian city but a
glorious metropolis of over 12 million inhabitants, Moscow reminds a
small country inside of the city. Life never stops there, the city is moving
all the time hosting non-stop parties which cater for all tastes.
Ekaterinburg:
This city is the fourth largest city and a major city in the central part of
Russia. Considering its location on the eastern side of Ural Mountains
Ekaterinburg is regarded as an official gate from Europe to Asia.
Irkutsk:
“Siberian tiger” Irkutsk is located in the heart of Siberia, 66 km from Baikal Lake. Irkutsk is a home for people of different nationalities. Also being
far from “civilisation” people safely saved old customs, legends and traditions.
Baikal Lake:
The deepest lake on the Earth contains more water than Great American
Lakes. Baikal, which is sometimes called “Blue Eye of Siberia” or “Pearl
of Siberia”, is one of the cleanest surface water reservoirs and you can
drink water right from the lake. Baikal area has always been a holy place
of Asia and is full of legends and mysteries. Local folks call it God Baikal
and treat it as a living and wise creature.

When you think of Holland you probably think of our capital Amsterdam,
where you can visit coffeeshops, the red light district and perhaps some
museam. You might also think of Dutch things like mills, tulips and dykes.
Well, Holland is way more than that! During those two weeks we will
have four sleeping locations. You will be staying in Tilburg, the city with
the biggest fair of Holland and the oldest city of Holland, Nijmegen, a typical student city. In between we have two locations on the Dutch countryside. Those who never learned to ride a bicycle will be given the
opportunity to do so. Our programme will contain a mix of sporting, fun
and culture. It's sporty because most of the times we travel by bicycle.
We will have fun because we'll be playing some really funny typical Dutch
and non-Dutch games and go party in Tilburg, Nijmegen and Amsterdam.
We'll be cultural because of Dutch habits like 'Sinterklaas' and eating
'oliebollen'. And last but not least: we're planning a one-day-trip to Amsterdam. Well: enough about us. Now it's up to you. Are you a bit sporty?
Do you like to party? Do you like playing games? Are you interested in
typical and non-typical Dutch culture? Then we might have a match!

The other side of Holland, a Travel Summer
University in Tilburg, Nijmegen, Amsterdam,
Drunense Duinen (Dutch Desert) and the
country side.
Tilburg:
It is the people that define the nature of a city. Tilburg has a population
of about 200.000 people. They are a creative, dynamic, inspiring and
above all: bourgondian. Besides this the University of Tilburg attracts a
lot of international students. Besides being well known for it's textile industry, Tilburg is also famous for it's large fair, when the city is full of hundreds of attractions, roller coasters, merry go rounds etcetera. This fair
is the biggest fair of the Netherlands.
Nijmegen:
Nijmegen is the oldest city of the Netherlands. The Romans start building
2000 year ago on a place nearby the river. Nijmegen is a typical student
city with a very pleasant atmosphere. Nijmegen is situated on the eastern
side of the Netherlands on the border with Germany. The city centre of
Nijmegen is famous for it's many terrases where you can enjoy your beer
in the open air.
Drunense Duinen (Dutch Desert):
The drunense duinen is a national park that is famous for it's beautiful
nature. Besides big deserts of sand, you can also find forests and different types of nature. During our SU you can discover this beautiful and
not very famous (yet!) part of the Netherlands.
Amsterdam:
During the SU we will spend one day discovering the capital of the Netherlands: Amsterdam.
St. Hubert:
St. Hubert is a little village on the Dutch countryside. We will pass it on
our bicycle tour to Nijmegen and we will sleep in a farm hostel.

Wanderers under the Tuscan SUn
Pisa:
Pisa is a city in Tuscany, central Italy, on the right bank of the mouth of
the Arno River on the Ligurian Sea. It is the capital city of the Province
of Pisa. The city is known worldwide for its famous bell tower. While the
Leaning Tower is the most famous image of the city, it is one of many
works of art and architecture in the city's Piazza del Duomo, also known,
since XX century, as Piazza dei Miracoli (Square of Miracles), to the
north of the old town center. The Piazza del Duomo also houses the
Duomo (the Cathedral), the Baptistry and the Camposanto Monumentale
(the monumental cemetery).
Siena:
Siena (also widely spelt Sienna in English) is a city in Tuscany, Italy. It is
the capital of the province of Siena. The historic centre of Siena has been
declared by UNESCO a World Heritage Site. In 1998 Siena retained a
ward-centric culture from medieval times. Each ward had an animal to
represent it, a boundary, and a distinct identity. Ward rivalries appear during the annual horse race at the piazza.
Lucca:
Lucca is a city in Tuscany, northern central Italy, situated on the river
Serchio in a fertile plain near (but not on) the Ligurian Sea. It is the capital
city of the Province of Lucca. Among other reasons, it is famous for its
intact Renaissance-era city walls (although the city has expanded beyond the wall's boundaries).

About 20 years ago s.th. extraordinary happened in Germany. The Berlin
Wall which separated the German people for many years came down
and a new age began. One could really feel that people all over Germany
were longing for this moment. They were dancing and celebrating on the
wall (and in the pubs of course!). They were traveling to parts of Germany that they only knew from books and TV. They were discovering a
new world; The Eastern Germans could buy bananas; The Western Germans could enjoy their first proper version of “Sandmännchen”. But now,
almost 20 years later, people have found out that reunification also
means challenges and problems. There might not be a Wall in Berlin
anymore but the Wall remains in some peoples’ minds as they have prejudices. But is it really true that: Wessis are arrogant? Ossis are self-pitying people, wishing back the “good old days”? Or is this just stupid
nonsense? Come and find out yourself, but in an ENTERTAINING way!!
We don’t want to give you boring history lessons but a good combination
of culture and fun! As you might expect from an AEGEE event, there will
be lots of time for activities, excursions and parties. You will also discover
the world capital of beer (which is Bamberg, as everyone knows!) and
Erlangen, the number one party place. So be prepared: You certainly
won’t get lots of sleep! But lots of fun instead!
154
East meets West - 20 years after
"Mauerfall"
Bamberg:

Weimar:
City in Thuringia, a federal state which belonged to the GDR before 89,
Goethe (“Weimar classicism”), one of the most famous German authors
lived and worked there for a long time, also other artists lived there
(Bach, Schiller), European Capital of culture 1999, centre of the Bauhaus
movement (German art style which emerged at the beginning of the
1920.
Dresden:
Capital of Saxonia, close to the border of Czech Republic, nice city with
historical city center, Dresden Elbe city is a world heritage site, one of
the greenest cities in Europe, many historical buildings like the Frauenkirche.
Munich:
Capital of Bavaria, third biggest city in Germany, close to Austria, if you
are lucky and there is clear blue sky, you can even see the Alps, well
known for its beer, many songs and stories about the “Hofbräuhaus”,

Play & Win Friends
Craiova:
Craiova (/kra'jo.va/) is a Romanian city, the capital of the county of Dolj,
situated near the East bank of the river Jiu in central Oltenia. It is a long
time political center, and is located at approximately equal distances from
the Southern Carpathians (north) and the Danube (south). Craiova is the
chief commercial city west of Bucharest. Craiova, which occupied the
site of the Dacian and Roman city Pelendava, was formerly the capital
of Oltenia. Its ancient bans, the highest ranking boyars of the Wallachian
state, initially those of the Craioveşti family. The bans had the right of
minting coins stamped with their own effigies - the origin of the Romanian
word ban as used for coins.
Calafat:
Calafat is a city in Dolj County, Romania, on the river Danube, opposite
the Bulgarian city of Vidin, to which it is linked by ferryboat. The construction of the Calafat-Vidin Bridge is planned between the two cities. It
has a beautiful scenery , specially on the shore on the Danube where
we will have the barbecue. There is a beach in that area and, in the back,
a forest.
Piatra Craiului:
The Piatra Craiului Mountains are a mountain range in the Southern Carpathians in Romania. In Romanian "Piatra Craiului" means "Rock of the
King". The Piatra Craiului mountains form a narrow and saw-like ridge,
which is about 25 km long. The highest elevation in the massif is the
"Vârful La Om" with 2238 m. The ridge is regarded as one of the most
beautiful sights in the Carpathians. The whole range is included in the
national park Parcul National Piatra Craiului, and about 148 km² of it was
declared "Nature Reserve" .
The Nicolae Romanescu Park:
The park in Craiova, is the largest and best-known park in the city. It was
built between 1900-1903 following the plans of the French architect E.
Redont. It is one of the biggest, 90 hectares, and most beautiful parks in

Napoleon said ''If the Earth were a single state, Istanbul would be its capital.'' If you think that this is the only reason why we call Istanbul "the
capital", you are wrong. Istanbul has been the capital and central point
of gigantic civilizations and empires throughout world history. Perhaps
you might be curious about the fascinating legacy and culture these have
left to Istanbul, of course not without reason being the European Capital
of Culture in 2010. Did you know that in Istanbul it is not extraordinary at
all to see a Mosque, Catholic Church, Orthodox Church and Synagogue
within the same neighbourhood? Or maybe an avenue that stems from
the 13th century and which today in average is visited by more than two
million people each day might attract your attention? Not to mention that
Istanbul is the only city in the world which connects two continents, bridging and introducing different cultures and civilizations to each other.
These and many more might for you be adequate reasons, for making a
city the most populated one in Europe. If you'd ask us, we would not find
them sufficient: because you haven't yet mentioned the view of the Bosphorus..! Join us this summer and you'll know what we mean!
158
The Capital Resurrects: Road to
2010
Istanbul:
Istanbul is the biggest city of Turkey. It is not capital but it had been the
capital of civilizations which influenced and changed the whole world history. Also Istanbul will be European capital of culture in 2010 so the capital resurrects. After these informations, you can imagine the inheritance
of history. It is nearly an open-air museum...

Ten Thousand nights of Thunder, refers to all the good memories the organisers have from previous Summer Universities. In this SU will also
try to give you an unforgettable time! Do you think Holland is all about

even controversial country. We will show what the true dutchman is like
and maybe even unravel some prejudices you might have. We will give
you the chance to get to know all the different sides of Holland, we will
visit Amsterdam, The Hague, the countryside and you will get to know
real dutch student life! We will show you everything from the windmills
to the red light district. We will go rowing around the canals of Leiden
and relax at the beach and use the true dutch way of transport: bikes! For
the real AEGEE-spirit we will have a European Food contest where you

Madrid, much more than a city!
Madrid:
Is the capital and largest city in Spain. It is located in the center of the
country. Due to its geographical location and history, Madrid has been
considered the financial and political center of Spain. As the former capital of the old Spainsh Empire, Madrid has been bestowed with a degree
of cultural predominance.
Toledo:
The capital of the province of Toledo. Successively a Roman municipality, the capital of the Visigothic Kingdom, a fortress of the Emirate of
Cordoba, an outpost of the Christian kingdoms fighting the Moors and,
in the 16th century, the temporary seat of supreme power under Charles
V, Toledo is the repository of more than 2,000 years of history. Its masterpieces are the product of heterogeneous civilizations in an environment where the existence of three major religions – Judaism, Christianity
and Islam – was a major factor.
Monastery and Site of the Escorial:
Near to Madrid, the Escorial Monastery stands in an exceptionally beautiful site in Castile. Its austere architecture, a break with previous styles, had a considerable influence on Spanish architecture for more than
half a century. It was the retreat of a mystic king and became, in the last
years of Philip II's reign, the centre of the greatest political power of the
time.
Segovia:
Segovia is Spain at its best - twisting alleyways, the highest concentration of Romanesque churches in all of Europe, pedestrian streets where
no cars are allowed, the aroma of roast suckling pig around every corner.
The famous Alcázar castle, source of inspiration to Walt Disney, and
where Queen Isabel promised Columbus the financial backing he needed to discover America.
La Granja de San Ildefonso:
At the foot of the Sierra de Guadarrama mountains, stands the Royal
Palace of La Granja de San Ildefonso, a grand and impressive complex,
built on the site of an old hostel run by the Hieronymite monks from the
Monasterio del Parral monastery in Segovia.

The Green Challenge
Oviedo:
Oviedo is the capital of the region, cultural tourism center. Actually two
of the main cultural paths in the middle age: (Camino de Santiago (Route
to Santiago) and Ruta de la Plata (Silver Path), passed through it. Great
monumental heritage, significant offers in museums that totally display
the historic-artistic heritage of Asturias. Nowadays, Oviedo is an open
and modern city with a great international projection and important student life due to the University of Oviedo.

green areas and some beaches. It has many sports installations and boasts about a restored and protected historic-artistic heritage. Gijón is the

Avilés:
It is situated on the central strip of the coastline of Asturias, to the west
of the cape Peñas. An old seafaring and farming town, it is now a modern
city and a major iron and steel centre, a product of demographic growth
and the industrial boom. Avilés is the third major city in the Principality
of Asturias. Its historic center has been declared a Historic-Artistic Site,
since it houses significant gems of civil and religious architecture.
LLanes:
Llanes has the appearance of a historic town. Not for nothing has its historic quarter been declared a Historic-Artistic Site and it preserves major
examples of civil, religious and military architecture.
Ribadesella:
Ribadesella is a summer town. The layout is determined by a bridge
which divides the fishing port in two. Every first Saturday in August, this
bridge acts as the finishing line of the most characteristic festival in Asturias, the descent of the river Sella by canoe.

Venezia:
How can you describe this city in few words: the water, the bridges the
churches... Many centuries of culture and art included in few kilometres
surrounded by channels and an amazing lagoondwhat about the sunset
in S. Marco square?...and a trip by the typical Venetian boat? You have
to walk in it, to talk with its people and discover each single corner of
this unique place.
Udine:
Udine is a quiet and neat provincial town (that AEGEE tries to wake up)
that leaves to the visitors the pleasure of discovering its face, hidden inside palaces and churches, in picturesque views that have retained their
charm untouched, behind streets and squares where strolling at ease is
still possible, in a human dimension that makes you feel at home. Udine
is a city in north-eastern Italy, in the middle of Friuli-Venezia Giulia region,
between the Adriatic sea and the Alps (Alpi Carniche). Udine is the historical capital of Friuli. After the fall of the Western Roman Empire, the
area increased of importance after the decline of Aquileia and afterwards
of Cividale also. In 983 AD Udine is mentioned for the first time, with it
the donation of the Utinum castle by emperor Otto II to the Patriarchs of
Aquileia, then the main feudal lords of the region. In 1420 it was conquered by the Republic of Venice...

Personalthank-younotes:
Katrin:
I would like to express my gratitude to the Network. Especially to
the Comitè Directeur and to the old teams who have made the
Summer University Project possible already for more than two
decades.
Dea:
Like many others did before me, I am very happy and grateful to
have been part of the SUCT. All of you have made the Summer
University Project so successful! I would like to take the opportunity to thank Bojan, Dario, Katrin and Percin for the unforgettable
experience we shared this year (we survived!). I also would like
to thank Antonio Violante for the knowledge he shared with me;
Kamala Schuetze for the inspiring introduction to this booklet;
Estefania Barrios, Patricia Tejera, Simone Bonechi for their precious support; and especially Mario Giuseppe Varrenti for the
Cover and Poster illustration (big thank-you to our 4 ‘photogenic’
hands!). I thank very much my mother and father for understanding my passion and commitment to AEGEE in all these years.
Last but not least, I thank AEGEE-Roma, AEGEE and all the
friends all over Europe.
Dario:
I still have in my mind when, some years ago, I attended my first
Summer University, and it is one of the best moment of my lifetime, 15days of fun, wild nights with people from several countries
of Europe. Summer Universities are not a small period to share
with a lot of people, the SU’s aquaintances start to last for long
time and is really fun to meet them again somewhere and talk
about these days lived together.
188
I would like to thank all the people I met in these experiences,
and all the SUCT 2009 for giving me the possibility to promote
the amazing world of Summer University and increase the AEGEE’s family. I would like also to thank in a particular way AEGEE
Palermo that gave me the possibility to be here writing you these
few lines. Thanks a lot for all, wishing to meet you somewhere in
Europe.
Bojan:
It is now almost three years since I visited my first AEGEE event.
It was a Summer University in Eskisehir in 2006. Ever since I was
connected to AEGEE in every way, but mostly through the active
and positive spirit that makes us meet. The force that is moving
us to explore and experience new places ant things is coming
from this spirit. It is my honour to be part of this years SUCT and
be able to give my share of experience, which will enable all of
you to have an unforgettable summer. Thank you to all the organizers of Summer Universities I visited for inspiring me to take
this road in AEGEE. I wish you all a fantastic summer and let the
spirit reach your hearts!
Percin:
Every success that you achieve in life is easier and more meaningful if you achieve this success with a group that you believe
in and enjoy working with. I had the chance to work with SUCT
team this year, on this big and important project of AEGEE, Summer Universities. Working with people knowing and believing in
the values of AEGEE made me even more motivated to contribute to the SU project. Hence, firstly I would like to thank that
SUCT team that is working a lot and dedicating themselves for
the success and sustainibility of the SU project. I would also like
to thank to my CD colleagues that helped me, whenever I needed
their help, without any hesitation. Of course since this project is
for AEGEE members, I would like to thank all the AEGEE network
and hope that you will learn, enjoy and most importantly, have an
amazing experience in the Summer Universities of AEGEE.
