On behalf of City Council, I would like to extend sincere greetings to all
Steveston businesses, residents and visitors .
Celebrating its 26th year of publication, Steveston Villager Business
Directory does a tremendous job promoting Steveston businesses to its
visitors and residents. The Villager continues to be a welcome and
valuable resource for all who use it, and an integral part of the Steveston
community.
One of Richmond’s many gems, Steveston is a vibrant area with
something to offer everyone. Both historic and picturesque, there are trails, dykes, natural parks
and gardens, and a wide selection of amenities. Visitors and residents can stroll along the docks,
purchase fresh seafood directly off the local fishermen’s b oats, enjoy the area’s fine cuisine, visit
a museum, or shop the unique galleries and boutiques. Visitors are often pleasantly surprised at
the richness of offerings in this quaint seaside village.
As the summer approaches, we look forward to the changing season and the traditions that it
brings. I invite you all to celebrate the annual Steveston Salmon Parade & Festival on Canada’s
birthday– July 1st . This is a celebration that the entire community of Steveston can participate
andtake pride in as it welcomes visitors from other parts of Richmond, the Lower Mainland, and

GROWING HEARTS, MINDS AND SOULS
Witnessing the educational and artistic journeys of our children is a truly amazing thing.
The Arts Connection, in its 23rd year, has had the privilege of seeing many of young
artists and minds pass through our doors. And in a world that embraces the value of
self-expression, creativity and intellect, we have come to appreciate the constant and
ever-growing need for exceptional educational and arts-related programs. This is why
in September of 2012, The Arts Connection is expanding, and all our programs,
existing and new, will be coming together and moving to its permanent home, a stateof-the-art 17,000 square foot facility, where we hope to educate and support hearts
and minds, young and old, for generations to come.
Our aim is to provide a hub of educational and arts-related programs in one space,
with a wide breadth of services that are important to the intellectual, artistic and
emotional growth of our children, and to the social and health needs of our seniors.
Our new facility will house Renaissance Kids, our exceptional early learning centre for
children ages 18 months to 6 years old. Our new before-and-after school program will
seek to fill the gap outside of school hours with an enriched schedule that includes a
hot breakfast, transportation to and from school, yoga, dance, and visual arts. Our
music and dance divisions will now have exciting opportunities for growth and our
visual arts division will be invigorated by amazing new programs, such as
photography and pottery, to name a few. The Arts Connection will also provide
programs for seniors that allows for intergenerational experiences between our
youngest and oldest students. We are also excited to bring a new facet to our
programming that focuses on health and wellness which will include professional
services such as speech pathology, behavioral therapy, and family counseling, as
well an innovative fitness and health education program geared for young girls.
Much like the complete commitment, dedication and effort put in before a big
concert, or a dance recital, we are working hard to build a facility to optimally serve
our programs and students, where we will strive to build a community within our
walls. We hope to fill it with the verve and spirit needed to make The Arts Connection
a vibrant second home and we hope to see you there when the curtain rises.

Paul Ygartua is an international artist – an original creator producing
remarkable work. He is a painter and muralist with bases in
Canada, France, Spain and England.
Creation and interpretation is Paul’s life.
In painting he is at home in all mediums
and his production is prodigious. A qualified gold and silversmith with a degree
in design Paul turned to painting immediately after graduating from the Liverpool
School of Art in Great Britain. His styles include Realism, Expressionism, Abstract
Expressionism, Surrealism and Abstract Surrealism. His continuous study and work
on techniques and painting mediums are apparent throughout his vast body of
work – from his Heritage Series to his Celestialism ( which shows the extent of his
imagination– giving an insight to his more intimate work illustrating the workings
of the mind and soul ) to his current Abstract Expressionism and Abstract
Surrealism. His most recent works provoke a response that is both physical and
emotional. His application of colour and line enables Paul to capture the essence
of the subject with a spontaneity unparalleled by many. His technique in colour is
startling and impressive and his use of the pallet knife is bold and convincing. His
monumental murals and domed ceiling have received international acclaim and
the power of his achievement is appreciated and recognized by many collectors
world - wide.
He is the creator of some of the most famous images in Canada such as his
Heritage Series; which are instantly recognized by most Canadians and have been
a part of the British Columbia identity for decades. He is also the architect of some
of the largest murals in North America and Europe. His paintings are in public and
private collections worldwide and are treasured for their intrinsic and real value.

World’s largest mural painted by artist Paul Ygartua
In July of 2011, Paul Ygartua finished restoring the ‘Legends of the Millennium’ mural.
It’s on two continuous walls of the Beachcomber Building and measures over 9000
square feet! It is considered “one of metro Vancouver’s most famous works of art….” .
Ygartua originally painted it in the year 2000. Then, as now, it was done
singlehandedly with a brush…no graphs, no projections, no helpers. The American
website AskART considers it probably the largest mural ever painted by a single

history and the architecture of the great cities
and villages of the world. He was born in
England and during his childhood, he spent
every summer in Spain, Basque Country where
his Father’s family live and where he first started
to paint ( at the age of six ) alongside of his
Mother who was also a painter—she gave him
the opportunity to paint and draw when he was
very young.

- The Terracotta Warrior Jeanette Jarville has painted 2 7' tall Terra Cotta
Warrior sculptures for The British Columbia Lions
Society for Children with Disabilities / Easter Seals,
this limited edition public art project will run from
April 2012 to October 2012.
Jeanette is honoured to be participating in the
Vancouver BC Lions Society art project to benefit
charity. I have been sponsored to paint two of the
limited edition 7' tall Terra Cotta Warrior sculptures
for public display. One is sponsored by the
generous Luding - Sekikawa Family of Richmond
and is located in Historic Steveston Village, the
other was sponsored by the amazing boutique
airline Air North & is located in MacBride Museum,
Whitehorse, Yukon Territory. Titles are : Treasure
Map and Buried Treasure.
The official press unveiling of all the Warriors took
place in the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Gardens in Vancouver
BC. The site of them all veiled was amazing! The
black fabric was pulled down all at once to
uncover them, very dramatic. A great public art
exhibition.

The Terracotta Warrior Great Banquet & Auction
The British Columbia Lions Society for Children with Disabilities/Easter
Seals is proud to announce their newest art project "The Terracotta
Warriors", this limited edition public art project will run from April 2012
to October 2012. The BC Lions Society will develop a limited edition of
Terracotta Warrior sculptures to be sponsored by individuals or
organizations and painted by local a rtists similar to the BC Lions
Society’s Orcas,Bears and Eagles... in the City. These sculptures will then
be displayed on the streets throughout the duration of the project.
Local artists,in partnership with sponsoring individuals / organizations,
will create a unique design & apply it to the surface of a 7 foot custom
formed fiberglass Terracotta Warrior. The Terracotta Warrior becomes
the artist’s canvas.Once the work is complete,the Terracotta Warrior will
be displayed in prominent public spaces around the participating cities
. A “Terracotta Warrior Map” will be created & distributed throughout
participating communities showing the location, sponsor and artist.

ANAF 284 Opens New Unit In Steveston
he Army, Navy and Air Force Unit 284 club opened its new clubhouse on
June 29th, 2012. Members are impressed with the spacious digs, built adjacent
to a new Seniors Housing Complex on the old site at 105 - 11900 No. 1 Road.
The long wait is over for club members, who have been using temporary facilities
since 2009, when the old building was taken down. A long time Steveston fixture,
Unit 284 celebrated its 66th anniversary this year.
Army, Navy and Air Force Veterans “ Shoulder to Shoulder ” service since 1840
Incorporated in 1917 and extended by Acts of Parliament of Canada. In 1946,
thirty Steveston area veterans approached the Army, Navy and Air Force
Veterans in Canada to open a Veterans Club in Steveston. Now, in 2012 – you
do not have to have a military service background in order to come out and
help the ANAF with the community support it provides. Each year the ANAF
gives thousands of dollars to community organizations. They also sponsor
educational scholarships for local Richmond students to pursue their post secondary education. If you are interested in helping, then become a member.
Please drop by for a membership application.
When the new ANAF clubhouse rose from the ground, it brought with it the
Maple Residence, a 144 unit seniors’ independent living facility.

Teak/Jati/Tectona Grandis
Tectona grandis is the Latin name for TEAK, a
hardwood of the family Verbenaceae.
Plantation grown teak trees can attain a height
of up to 45cm [ 150ft ] with a diameter of 1 1.5m [ 3 - 5ft ]. It is ready for harvesting from
around 50-60 years. If well maintained the tree
can produce a clear stem of up to 30m in length
giving a high timber yield. It produces a very large
leaf similar to a tobacco leaf which is around 12”
long and wide. Teak has long been known for its
durability, functionality and aesthetics.
