Book Discussion “Being Mortal” by Dr. Atul Gawande - rsvp
NOV 6 In the PAC
2:30-3:30 pm Jill Lund will lead a discussion about this thought provoking book written by Atul Gawande,
MD, MPH, who is a surgeon, writer, and public health researcher. He practices general
and endocrine surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Medicine has triumphed in
modern times, but in the inevitable condition of aging and death, the goals of medicine
seem too frequently to run counter to the interest of the human spirit. Doctors, committed
to extending life, continue to carry out devastating procedures that in the end extend
suffering. Gawande addresses his profession’s ultimate limitation, arguing that quality of
life is the desired goal for patients and families. Gawande offers examples of freer, more
socially fulfilling models for assisting the infirm and dependent elderly, and he explores
the varieties of hospice care to demonstrate that a person’s last weeks or months may
be rich and dignified. Full of eye-opening research and riveting storytelling, Being Mortal
asserts that medicine can comfort and enhance our experience even to the end, providing
not only a good life but also a good end. Come join the discussion whether or not you have
read the book. By the time we are finished, you may just want to check this one out of the
Barrington Area Library or our Garlands library.

“The Accidental Empress” Barbara Rinella
NOV 11 Dramatic Book Review and Luncheon - rsvp
Wednesday
Noon-3:30 pm In the PAC
$25 for Members and their Guests
Barbara will dramatize “The Accidental Empress” by Allison Pataki.
When this fantastic historical fiction novel came out in February,
2015, the wonderful author, Allison Pataki, was greeted with raves
and praise on TV’s Today Show! There has been great excitement
for this impelling novel which focuses on an important segment
of European history and truly allows powerful, beautiful Empress
Elizabeth of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the Hapsburgs to
come to life!
In 1848, young Emperor Franz Joseph comes to power in difficult
times as he tries to keep Hungary under Austrian rule. The 20 year old Emperor survives
an assassin’s attack by a Hungarian nationalist who wants Hungary to be independent. It
is now obvious Franz Joseph needs to marry quickly and produce an heir! His domineering
mother, Archduchess Sophie, chooses her sister’s oldest daughter, Helene, from Bavaria, to
be his bride. As quiet Helene and her mother come to court in 1853, they are accompanied
by short, shy Helene’s spirited, beautiful, athletic 15 year old sister, Sisi. Can you guess
whom Emperor Franz Joseph prefers?
Barbara Rinella can’t wait to bring Sisi to life to tell her story of sibling rivalry, love,
adoration, enormous challenges and power to control history! Sisi is truly the “Accidental
Empress,” but her role in keeping Austria and Hungary united is a true example of, as Allison
Pataki stated on The Today Show, “juicy history.” If you’ve ever been to Vienna, you won’t
forget portraits of Sisi with her gorgeous, long hair festooned with jewels and flowers. How
did this young beauty keep Hungary together with Austria to save her husband’s Empire?
What were her diplomatic skills? How did the people react to Sisi? Did she fulfill her duty to
produce a male heir? What was motherhood like for an Empress in the 19th century?
Let’s jump into exciting history, meet Sisi, and then plan a trip to Budapest and waltz to the
music of Johann Straus in Vienna!!
A three course luncheon will be served prior to Barbara’s performance.

Slavery and the
Founding Fathers - rsvp
Wednesdays,
November 11, 18, & 25,
9:30am-11:30am
in the Burnham
Many historians have begun to
focus on the role that slavery
played in the lives of the United
States founding generation. It
is sometimes forgotten that
some of our founding fathers,
who proclaimed they would
never be slaves of England, were
themselves slaveholders. In this
course Joyce Haworth, who holds a
M.A. in American History, will help
you explore this contradiction.
Examine the kind of society into
which the founding fathers were
born and how they viewed slavery
and themselves as slaveholders.
The Real Thanksgiving
- rsvp
Tuesday, November 17,
9:30-11:30am in the SST
The real story behind Thanksgiving
is not all Pilgrims and Native
Americans. The art of giving thanks
and the practice of having feast
days are longstanding traditions
that go back centuries. Our own
Thanksgiving holiday has grown
and changed over the years. So
as you plan your menu, make
travel arrangements, or enter the
football pool, spend a morning
reflecting on what Thanksgiving is
really all about. Join Joyce Haworth
to really understand the story
behind the holiday and the custom
of giving thanks.

What Causes Diabetes?
Your pancreas makes a hormone called insulin.
It lets your cells turn glucose from the food you
eat into energy. With type 2 diabetes your body
is creating insulin, but your cells aren’t using or
benefiting from the insulin as well as they should.
This is referred to as insulin resistance.
Risk Factors
Age: 45 and older have increased risk
Genetics: If someone in your family such as a parent,
sister or brother has diabetes, it can increase your
chances of having diabetes.
Obesity
Metabolic Syndrome: High blood pressure, high
cholesterol or triglycerides and higher than normal
blood glucose levels can cause type 2 diabetes
Ethnicities: African-American, Asian-American,
Hispanic or Latino may have increased risk
Lifestyle: A sedentary lifestyle, decreased exercise
habits, smoking, stress and too little or too much
sleep may increase your risk.
Prevention

Type Two Diabetes
|
Weight Loss: Decreasing 7% to 10% of your weight
can cut your risk by half.
Get Active: Moving your muscles uses insulin. By
walking briskly for at least 30 minutes you can cut
your risk by a third.
Eat Right: Avoid processed carbohydrates, sugary
drinks and trans and saturated fat. Also, limit red
and processed meats.
Quit Smoking: Work with your doctor on how to quit
smoking and decrease your risk.

TheGazetteTO GO
Going on vacation? Going to visit family? You can’t take the
Garlands with you but you can take the Gazette. Bring along a
copy of the Gazette and have a picture taken while holding it in
front of something which shows where you have been. Give a
copy to your children and grandchildren so they can join in the
fun. Give Jill the picture and it will be displayed where all can see.
Let’s see how far the Gazette can travel!
