January 2016 - Retiree Home
HPREC OREGON NEWS Fun, friendship, memories for the members of the Hewlett-Packard/Agilent HPREC Employees Club Janaury 2016, #57 http://0regon.hpretirees.org/ Sharon and Len Butterfield, Writers/Editors e-mail: [email protected] President Rita’s Message -Happy Holidays to all of you, winter certainly has arrived with all this rain. It’s time to bring out the crock pot for some good old fashioned soups on these miserable days! Our activity committee has some wonderful activities scheduled for us. November 18th was our Annual Membership meeting, and Retiree Benefit Fair. Details from this past event are later in the newsletter. The activity committee chaired by Bill McCormick and Sharon Butterfield are busy planning events for next year. Save the date, I do know a Valentine’s luncheon at the Children’s Farm Home Café is planned for February 12, 2016 at 11:30; you will not want to miss this no host social luncheon. As our year draws to a close, I’d like to thank all the Board members for their service this year. Everyone has done an excellent job and their contributions are greatly appreciated. The board members and officers for next year were announced at the Holiday Party. The boards of directors for 2016 are listed on page 2 of this newsletter. Terri Avery has decided to resign from the board so she has been replaced with Evelyn Martin. Our thanks go out to Terri for doing an excellent job for sending cards for our Sunshine Club (sickness/just because and sympathy). Welcome to the board Evelyn, we are delighted to have her join our board! As I do in each newsletter, I encourage you to participate in Club activities, and if you have something you think will be an interesting activity for the club, just let a member of the activity committee know. We are always looking for associate board members, please consider running for a 2 year term. It is not demanding and will not interfere with any of your other retirement activities. We schedule a once a month meeting on the first Wednesday of the month for an hour and a half. It’s always nice to have new associated and board members with fresh new ideas as some of us have been recycled for several terms. Rita Pinard HPREC President Neta Martin-Couron turns “99” Neta celebrated her 99th birthday on Sunday, December 6, 2015. What a birthday party she had complete with a full buffet dinner and 115 HPREC friends singing Happy Birthday to her! Neta had an interesting career at HP, being hired in 1977 at the age of 60, .wow; those were the “good old days.” Neta retired in 1994 after 17 years in production. Neta is a native Oregonian, born in Roseburg. Neta had a very interesting life over the years, she and her husband raised three children, she has 6 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. They lived on 3 acres and raised chickens, vegetables and were gentle gardeners selling their seasonal vegetables and fruits to the local grocery stores. Neta’s looking forward to next year, the “big one!” Neta feels very blessed to have so many good friends, in the HPREC club and out. She wishes a Merry Christmas to all her friends! January 2016 HPREC News, Oregon Edition Page 1 Welcome New Members HPREC of Oregon always welcomes new members and returning past members. HPREC members recruit your friends that recently or are soon to leave HP and had at least 10 years of employment. They do not need to retire, that is not a requirement of our club and with the last wave of EER employees leaving HP in November perhaps you know someone who would like to join. It is amazing how many former employees come to a Retiree Fair or Craft Fair or just run across a former employee and they have never heard of our HPREC Club, we need to get the word out to our friends, Valerie and Brian Bach Sally and Jim Cooper Susan and Ken Downer George and Kathleen Hackleman Sarah Ligon Jan Magnolia David and Marji Peterson Gilbert and Sharyn Smith Steven Vojnovich and Shanda Addington Albany, OR Halsey, OR Corvallis, OR Corvallis, OR Albany, OR Corvallis, OR Albany, OR Corvallis, OR Lebanon, OR Board of Directors and Officers for 2016 Elections are over and all but one of our 2015 board have been recycled for another year! Update on Past Activities (To view all the photos taken go to http://oregon.hpretirees.org - recent activities). August 1, 2015- HPREC Annual Picnic was held in the B3 Cafeteria. The weather was around 100 degrees so we obtained permission to hold our picnic in a nice air conditioned setting!. The picnic was well attended with 123 signing up. HP donated a Stream tablet won by Donna Mann and HPREC donated an HP printer won by Howard Barrar. Other lucky winners were: Young Lauw, Bullet Blender; Dean Carlozzi, Home Music System; Cliff Maier, Reciprocating Saw; Frank Nitcher, Shop-Vac; Jack Carlozzi, Cordless Drill; Ginny Taylor, Convection Countertop Oven; Craig Maze, Electric Grill to name a few of the winners. The picnic also had a lot of nice bingo prizes won by various members. The biggest issue we had this year at our picnic was the food, the alphabet had way too may desserts and not enough salads, veggies and fruits. We had 34 desserts signed up and 12 salads. Perhaps our group believes in the saying, “eat desserts first then the meal.” The afternoon ended with us spooning up 4 gallons of ice cream for A & W Root Beer floats which were enjoyed by everyone A view of the crowd in the cafeteria Left Marv and Shirley Pawlowski - January 2016 Middle Howard Barrar photo below Donna Mann HPREC News, Oregon Edition Page 10 Judy York and Young Lauw Checking people in (nametags) Raffle tickets: Bill Thompson, Kirk Newburg, Bob Bracken, Karen Anderson, Gene Newburg and Ruth Bracken You don’t have to be “old” or retired to come to our HPREC Picnic Marshall Anderson looking over the raffle gifts Carl Baker, Deb Hackleman and Freida Soenksen catching up on the good old days August 10, 11, 12, 2015 Campout at Belknap Springs Cliff and Christa Maier hosted a wonderful weekend at Belknap Springs. Hwy 20 in Corvallis HPREC had 37 turn out for this “best kept secret” in Corvallis for lunch, two even drove down from Wilsonville to check it out. Our menu consisted of a choice of: pork tenderloin salad, sausage lasagna, chicken salad on a croissant or lettuce and vegetarian lasagna. The sausage lasagna was the most popular, tied for second was the pork tenderloin and chicken salad. The cost of the lunch was $12.50. Several enjoyed delicious desserts: cheese cake, mud pie or lemon meringue pie. (No photos were taken at this event) Our next social/Valentine’s Day luncheon will be held on February 12, 2016 at the Children’s Farm Home Café. For this event they will prepare a buffet luncheon for us to enjoy. Details will be sent out in the HPREC updates next month with the menu and price. Save the date as this will require a reservation! January 2016 HPREC News, Oregon Edition Page 12 December 6, 2015 HPREC Holiday Party -Valley Catering, Adair Village Clubhouse Another year and 114 members and guests enjoyed another successful HPREC Holiday Party. The Co-chairs for this event were Teri Avery and Jeanne Reinke with their committee members: Ken Parker, Judy York and Sharon Butterfield. They chose a wonderful menu of smoky glazed salmon, or pork tenderloin, a romaine lettuce salad, roasted seasonal vegetables, roasted red potatoes and for dessert cheesecake with a choice of berry sauce or chocolate drizzle. This year we offered a no host bar featuring wine and beer although rumor has it some members enjoyed a martini! This seemed to be a good addition so as long as we have our party at Valley Catering and they have the bar and servers we will likely have this service available. Ken Parker and Jeanne Reinke provided the entertainment, and of course everyone had to put their cell phone away for the trivia and cross word challenges. There would be no looking the answers up on “Google” according to Ken. Some of the questions were rather difficult unless you watch and “remember” Christmas/Holiday movies or are good at trivia. The afternoon was spent specializing with friends, singing happy birthday to Neta, drawing door/raffle prizes, trivia and just having a good time! HP Inc. donated a printer and our club bought a laptop computer to give away for the door prizes. HPREC also gathered and delivered 192# of food for the Linn-Benton Food Share, they were very grateful.
