Message from the Authors
Normally phonics has little scope for engaging emergent readers on a personal level.
By contrast, I have found that by sharing an imaginary world where letters come
alive and personally tell the children how they behave in words, it is possible to create
engaged listeners, speakers, readers and writers in a language-rich environment. How?
By introducing a ‘story logic’ that brings those dry phonic facts to life. This strategy
makes phonics feel more like play. More exciting, it has proved itself to pack remarkable
teaching power.
We are very happy this year to introduce several new products that US teachers have
clamoured for. Two new Big Books (p25), one for the alphabet and another for digraphs,
will please teachers and children alike. And now, you can closely coordinate handwriting
instruction and your Teacher’s Guide with three new Handwriting Practice books for K-2
(p34). Handwriting instruction is further enhanced with the new Handwriting Songs –
Uppercase CD (p28). In addition, we present two new Flip Flap books (p29), which give

What is Letterland?
Letterland is a unique, phonics-based approach to
teaching reading, writing and spelling to 3-8 year olds.
The Letterland characters transform plain black letter
shapes into child-friendly pictograms and they all live in
an imaginary place called Letterland.
Simple stories about the Letterland characters explain
the full range of dry phonics facts so that children are
motivated to listen, to think and to learn. These stories
explain letter sounds and shapes, allowing children to
progress quickly to word building, reading and writing.
How does it work?
1. Learn letter sounds
Once you have met the friendly
Letterland characters, just
start to say their names for the
correct letter sound.
2. Learn letter shapes
Sounds
Digraphs
Harry Hat Man makes the sound at the
beginning of his name. Just whisper it –
‘hhh…’.
Whenever Sammy Snake starts to hiss
loudly behind Harry Hat Man, the Hat
Man turns back and says ‘sh!’ because
he hates noise.

down to his heel on the ground.
