(trainings) regularly offered by the council throughout the year are outlined in blue.
TROOP PROGRAMS
101 Troop Camping Certification
This course is required for at least one adult who will accompany the troop on a
camping trip and who will be involved in the planning process with the girls.
Emphasis is on how to teach skills to the girls and prepare them for their outdoor
experiences, as well as health and safety concerns. You will be preparing your
lunch during the class, so please do not order a Discoveree lunch.
This is a four session workshop.

Items to bring: Council Resource Guide (can be downloaded from the
website at http://www.girlscoutsnorcal.org/safety/council-resourceguide),
a mess kit (an unbreakable plate, bowl and cup with eating utensils), and a
camping chair.
102 First Aid/CPR
First Aid/CPR by American Red Cross. You will learn approved lifesaving
techniques and have an opportunity for hands on practice. Upon completion
of this class, you will be eligible to act as a First
Aider. Please dress in comfortable clothes as we will
be practicing on the floor.
This is a three session workshop.

College admissions - what's it all about? Discover
what factors your family should explore and
understand before the process begins. Find out how to
define academic and financial fit. College evaluation
tips and interactive free assessments will be shared.

104 Extended Travel Training
This training is required for troops planning trips of 3 nights or more. Come
hear from experienced travel volunteers. Learn all you need to know to help
your girls plan and go on adventures they will remember for a long time. At
least one adult on the trip must have taken this training. Girls are also
encouraged to attend.
This is a two-session workshop.

105 How to be a Better Leader
You’ve been trained, now what? We’ll show you some secrets to keep you
organized and to keep your girls engaged and having fun!

106 Partner with Older Girls to Execute Journeys
Join us as we explore how Journeys benefit your troop and how to execute
them. In this workshop you will dive deep into the anatomy of a Journey,
utilization of the Girl Scout processes and execution of the Leadership
Experience within Journeys. This workshop is designed to look at best
practices for Cadette, Seniors and Ambassador Journey delivery. By the end
of this journey you will be ready to partner with your girls on their next
Journey!

Ever sat through a badly run adult meeting? Tired of the misuse or lack of
procedures in your committees or groups? Parliamentary Procedure is more
than bylaws and rules; it's the power to democratically run meetings that get
things done! Come learn how it works. Our Council's own Parliamentarian
will have you making, amending and even postponing motions via fun
activities.

108 Sign Language for Ceremonies
Would you like to add a bit of pizazz to your Awards
and Flag Ceremonies? Add some American Sign
Language! Come learn the signs to express the Pledge
of Allegiance and the Girl Scout Promise, as well as
some usefulsongs!

109 Troop SOS - Setting up for a successful year with your troop
Do you need some extra support in navigating the most common problems
related to running a troop? Parent engagement in positive and supportive
ways, fostering troop leadership & responsibility among girls, building a fun
and varied yearly calendar, helping your troop run its first Service Unit event,
or finding community service ideas & opportunities.
We’ll use this workshop for group discussion to share questions, solutions,
and council resources such as the Volunteer Toolkit in a very grassroots,
organic discussion among volunteers. Even if you’re not a troop leader,
consider being an ambassador for your Service Unit and bringing these
solutions back to share with your volunteer base.

110 Movie Chemistries for Daisies and Brownies
Dive into STEM fun with “Movie Chemistries”! Learn how to incorporate
this awesome program, focused on chemical engineering, in troop meetings.
Activities are hands-on, designed to spark an interest in STEM. Sample
activities include creating paint and making slime.

111 Video Game Design Patch Program
Introduce STEM to your troop using video game design. The workshop will
explore the educational benefits to playing and designing video games. No
science, engineering or computer science experience is needed. Leaders will
get facilitation tips and hands-on experience with the curriculum. Leaders
will also learn how to be one of the first to reserve a program box to use with
their troop and get an opportunity to maybe take one home to try!

When you are out at night away from the city lights, don’t forget to look up!
Come learn some basics about the night sky and activities to prepare
everyone to enjoy a starry night.

113 Backpacking 101
Are you looking for a great activity that builds confidence in your girls?
Take them backpacking!!! Not sure how to get started?? Come to
backpacking 101. We will talk logistics, tips, trails, and how to transition
from troop camping to backpacking. If you want detailed information on
equipment and group gear, come to the Backpacking Gear session as well.

114 Basic Knots
Learn eight basic knots and temporary whipping (known in
some circles as "Brownie whipping"). Learn their general
uses and tips for teaching knots
to the girls.

package of pencils or wooden dowels to tie rope around.
115 Box Oven Outdoor Cooking
In this class, you will help prepare a wide variety of snacks, desserts and
meal selections...and cook them using a Box
Oven with your Patrol. Walk away from this
class with your own Box Oven, recipes, and
improved skills for your next campout with girls.
Lunch is not included but come prepared to
sample and share your Box Oven treats.

116 Orienteering
Looking for a fun, outdoor adventure for your troop? Orienteering is the sport
of navigating in the woods with a map and compass. Learn the basic skills of
the sport, and how to introduce it to your troop at a local event. Try out a
mini-course yourself.

133 How to Play with Matches
Learn how to safely teach Brownies or Juniors the art of building a campfire.
We'll start with a flameless fire, then move to edible fires, fire safety, how to
light matches and end with building a fire. We'll also throw in our favorite
campfire songs as an added bonus.

Learn easy and traditional Girl Scout songs. No experience needed.

Learn fast, super fun games for every troop meeting. Find out how to harvest
the energy of active (squirrelly!) troop members through the power of games
where no one goes out or loses. These games will make your meetings more
fun and more focused--really! Learn by playing yourself.

Items to bring: Please wear shoes and clothes you can play in
CRAFTS & PERSONAL INTEREST
Learn to knit the cable and lace patterns - choose from
different projects to make. Find out how knitting can
be a Community Service project and how to teach girls
this relaxing and fun craft. Yarn and knitting needles
will be supplied.

Want to play with paint, stamps, stencils and other fun things? Come and see
what art journal basics is all about! What is an art journal? It’s a journal
made with pages you have decorated yourself- they can be as simple or as
fancy as you want them to be. You can write in it, use it for recipes, or let
your art be the "words" you would use on a page. This is more of a technique
class, you will be learning basic ways to decorate a journal. For class, we will
be using tags instead of an actual journal. If you have one to bring with you
that is great- recommended is a Strathmore Mixed Media 5.5x8.5 90 lb
weight paper or Canson Mix Media 7x10 98 lb paper weight.

121 Beginning Origami
Come and learn some basic origami skills, techniques on how to teach your
girls, and fun ideas.
Workshop Leader: Karen Oliver
122 Cross Stitch
Whether you are a beginner or have just dabbled come and join us. You'll see
how to separate the strands in your floss, anchor your thread without a knot
and step by step fundamental techniques for the basic cross-stitch and
working across rows. No experience required.

Create a unique Tree of Life Pendant from wire, beads and
gemstones. Tree of Life artwork has been part of many ancient
cultures and folklore.

123 Daisy/Brownie Crafts
Learn to make and teach a variety of easy crafts for
younger girls.

In the spirit of Girl Scouts, attendees will learn how
to use resources wisely and upcycle old denim
clothing into trendy fashionable handbags. This is a
skill that can be taught to girls from Brownie
through Ambassador levels. Minimum sewing skills
are required. Notions, sewing kits and fabric lining provided.

Items to bring: Please bring an old pair of denim jeans, shorts, or skirt to use
in this craft and also scissors.
132 Valentines, Valentines, Valentines
There is still time to make Valentines for your secret pal this year! Come join
us as we learn new and creative ways to make valentines to send out to loved
ones and special friends.

Items to bring: Tooth picks, straight pins and clear glue.
125 DIY Corsage & Boutonnieres
Learn how to make beautiful, professional looking corsages and
boutonnieres, rather than spending loads of money purchasing them from a
florist. This is also a great skill to teach your older Girls Scouts! Flowers,
greenery & supplies will be provided, but, you will need to bring along your
own floral scissors, ribbon cutting scissors and wire cutters, if you have them.

126 Don’t Throw Away That T-Shirt
Have you ever wondered what to do with that t-shirt that doesn't fit, but still
holds special memories? Come and learn ways to recycle that special shirt
into practical items.

Items to bring: Please bring a T-shirt and scissors.
127 Embellished Petal Pouches
Come make a fabric napkin into a drawstring pouch
with embellished "petals". The pouch is great for a
travel bag for jewelry/toiletries, evening bag, or
reusable gift wrapping. It's easy-to-teach hand sewing that works great as a
holiday gift, teacher thank you, or for fundraisers.

129 Fun with Fleece
Make simple no-sew items with fleece. Choices
include hats, pillows and a banana slug to name a
few.

fabric.
130 Making your Mark, II
Explore fun and unusual ways to make contemporary prints with a mixed
media focus. New methods from prior year’s classes.

Did you know that we have 7 different camps in the Northern California Area
that you can rent for your troop, group or service unit adventures during the
school year? We have also re-opened Sugar Pine for spring and fall rentals!
Join an informative, engaging and fun "road trip" with your tour guide,
Priscilla, Property Development Director, and discover what each site has to
offer for planning your next outing. We will emphasize troop camping
options and the lesser-known camp properties, our hidden gems. You will
also learn about our free work parties as another opportunity to explore our

210 Digital Cookie 2.0 for Smart Cookies!
Digital Cookie 2.0 has awesome, easy tools for girls to develop and tell their
cookie story, increase their online presence to
help meet their goals, and learn about target
marketing as they use social media in a positive
and safe way. This workshop will be girl led by
older girls who will share tips so parents and
leaders can best support girls. You'll leave with
ways to get your girls started right away with a
successful cookie season!

212 Backpacking Gear
Want to know what is "out there" in backpacking gear? Want to know how to
outfit a girl (or a troop) without breaking the bank? Have some great gear tips
you want to share?? We plan to zip through the basics so there is time for
questions. The session is aimed primarily at those getting started, but we plan
to cover some "state of the art" as well.

213 Buddy Burners Outdoor Cooking
Explore the best ‘hands-on’ method of outdoor cooking -using a Buddy
Burner. Learn about how it works, make one to take home, prepare the food,
and use it to make fun snacks and several easy, quick meal options. Come
prepared to sample the treats too.

214 Geocaching 101
Learn the basics of this global sport. We'll start with a brief overview of the
basics then head outdoors to find some cache containers in the immediate
area using GPS devices. We'll cover the steps required to lead the Junior
Badge: Geocaching.

215 Outdoor Cooking
Learn outdoor cooking methods with an emphasis on cast iron, campfire,
stove and box oven cooking. For some using these methods can seem like an
intimidating experience. Heating coals and calculating heating temperatures
can seem intimidating, but we'll get you cooking in no time! Come see how
easy it is to prepare crowd-pleasing meals using easy to follow recipes and
simple ingredients!

There's life beyond s'mores! Practice some fun and easy campfire cooking
skills as we prepare a tasty five course meal cooked entirely on sticks. As an
added bonus, we get to eat our coursework! We'll keep the portions small so

Come get a taste of camp life! Make a craft, eat a camp snack, play games,

Based on the TV Show, “Minute to Win It”, come learn a number of one

Learn to knit the cable and lace patterns - choose from different projects to
make. Find out how knitting can be a Community Service project and how to
teach girls this relaxing and fun craft. Yarn and knitting needles will be
supplied.

Want to play with paint, stamps, stencils and other fun things? Come and see
what art journal basics is all about! What is an art journal? It’s a journal
made with pages you have decorated yourself- they can be as simple or as
fancy as you want them to be. You can write in it, use it for recipes, or let
your art be the "words" you would use on a page. This is more of a technique
class, you will be learning basic ways to decorate a journal. For class, we will
be using tags instead of an actual journal. If you have one to bring with you
that is great- recommended is a Strathmore Mixed Media 5.5x8.5 90 lb
weight paper or Canson Mix Media 7x10 98 lb paper weight.

Daisy, Brownie and Junior Journeys. By the end of this
journey you will be ready to guide your troop on their next
Journey!

Tired of trying to coordinate Girl Scout activities between different aged
daughters? Consider leading a multi-level troop! This workshop will cover
the pros and cons of a multi-level troop, tried-and-true leader tips for running
a multi-level troop (including how to avoid a variety of pitfalls), and how to
build a program that allows multi-level AND individual level activities.
Handouts, including a chart showing common award requirements across all
levels, will be provided and will include aspects of all levels from Daisy to

314 Hike Planning (Younger Girls)
Looking for a way to get your girls outdoors? This workshop is for you!
Come learn how to look at a map to find good hikes and learn appropriate
mileages for different age groups. Leaders will leave with a hike already
planned for their troop!

open space preserve) near where you live.
316 Taking Your Troop Outdoors When You Are Not an Outdoors Person
How to take a your troop outdoors when you are not used to being outdoors
or just hate the bugs and dirt. You will learn a progression of outdoor
activities, learn how to use unexpected moments and how to get past the dirt.
Taught by a former National Park Ranger.
317 Action Packed Team Building Games
Participate as you learn a variety of ice breakers, get-to-know-you
activities, and Team Building Games. Wear comfortable shoes and come
prepared to interact! There is always time for a GAME. Great booklet-style
handout provided that details all of the games, including new games
introduced in 2016.

You don't need to bring your partner, just come and learn some classic folk

320 Cross Stitch
Whether you are a beginner or have just dabbled come and join us. You'll see
how to separate the strands in your floss, anchor your thread without a knot
and step by step fundamental techniques for the basic cross-stitch and
working across rows. No experience required.
Items to bring: Thimble and embroidery scissors
if you have them.
In the spirit of Girl Scouts, attendees will learn
how to use resources wisely and upcycle old
denim clothing into trendy fashionable
handbags. This is a skill that can be taught to
girls from Brownie through Ambassador levels.
Minimum sewing skills are required. Notions,
sewing kits and fabric lining provided.

322 DIY Corsage & Boutonnieres
Learn how to make beautiful, professional looking corsages and
boutonnieres, rather than spending loads of money purchasing them from a
florist. This is also a great skill to teach your older Girls Scouts! Flowers,
greenery & supplies will be provided, but, you will need to bring along your
own floral scissors, ribbon cutting scissors and wire cutters, if you have them.

326 Kumihimo Braiding
Kumihimo is a traditional Japanese technique of
braiding strands of threads to create intricately
colored cords. Learn this simple braiding process
while making a beautiful braided bracelet. Once
you have learned the basics, these braids can be
used for all kinds of accessories.

327 Modern Hexagon Hand Piecing
Learn how to cut, pin, and hand stitch a hexagon
quilt without paper piecing. Combine front,
batting, and back all at once to form a hexagon
unit. Stitch these units together to form any size
quilt you want.

Learn easy painting skills and with some artist's "tricks", complete a painting
you'll be proud to show off. This year's painting will be "Girl With A
Parasol". Absolutely no talent needed. Experienced Art teacher will ensure
your success, and show you how to pass this on to your girls.

330 Taking Better Photographs
Whether you use a digital or film-based camera, good photo composition
principles remain the same. In this workshop, you will learn several of these
principles as well as useful tips for photographing people, animals, and
scenery.

Co-op (shared leadership) troops offer some great advantages, but they can
also pose some challenges. Come explore ways to allow girls to participate
more in their planning & decision-making, how to provide a sense of

communicate effectively with the adult leadership team & much more! Learn
to cooperate effectively with your adult leadership team, instead of just
dividing responsibilities & meeting dates. Helpful for Leaders as well as

Connecting with the outdoors is an essential part of the Girl Scout
experience. GSNorCal offers year-round programs that encounrage and

outdoor skills, discover an affinity for nature and seek out new

Love hiking and camping and want something more challenging? Try
backpacking! Learn about the joys and the nuts and bolts of getting out into
some of our beautiful California wilderness. Learn how to get started, what
you will need, what to cook, and where to go. Learn about the Girl Scouts of
Northern California Backpacking Interest Group. BIG welcomes both
independent scouts and members of a troop.

413 Bicycling for Everyone
Commute or adventure, road or mountain, spandex or street clothes? Come
and learn about bicycling and the many bicycling resources in the Bay Area
and beyond. Safety, basic repair skills, kinds of bikes, rules of the road, bikes
and transit, places to buy or rent, what to wear and places to go will be
covered. Hands on repair practice.

416 Knife Safety and Basic Whittling
Learn how to teach knife safety, including care and sharpening of a pocket
knife. Basic whittling skills will be taught and information on the Cub Scout
"Whittling Chip" card will be available.

soap, and a pencil (for drawing shapes on the soap). Please bring a

417 Easy Traditional Girl Scout Songs
Learn easy and traditional Girl Scout songs. No experience needed.
Recording allowed.
418 Song Leading 101
Learn effective song leading skills to pass on to your girls, from Daisies to
Ambassadors, for groups from 4 to 400! We'll sing lots of songs along the
way, learning tricks of the trade for engaging girls, even if they think they
don't know any songs.

425 Modern Hexagon Hand Piecing
Learn how to cut, pin, and hand stitch a hexagon
quilt without paper piecing. Combine front,
batting, and back all at once to form a hexagon
unit. Stitch these units together to form any size
quilt you want.

roving! You will leave with the item of your creation

Put your personal flare on new crafts for older girls including decorations,
gifts and keepsakes. We will be using recycled materials for many of our
crafts. This is an advanced class.

Create beautiful charms, beads and pendants with paper! Simply, easy
techniques will help you make beautiful creations that can be used as gifts or

422 Dream Catchers & God’s Eyes
Two traditional camp crafts are easier than you think and good for any
meeting, car trip, or camp out. Come learn and make several different types.

stitching techniques. Ideas, how-to’s and time to stitch will get you started
with this program idea for older Brownies and up. No experience required!
