With the holiday season officially behind us, our committee chairs and
their respective committees are hard at work planning for the year ahead.
The Super Committee, along with the Building Committee, have a very
busy year ahead taking the suggestions and plans made during last year’s
Super Committee meetings and prioritizing them for implementation in
the year ahead. During the month of December and early January, the
Building Committee, chaired by Harold Muckleroy, Jr. met with four
different architects to determine the best fit for Colonial. As I am sure
you can imagine, this is a lengthy but important process, as we hope the
outcome will be a long standing relationship as your club continues to grow
and evolve with the membership.
Colonial Olympics
Following last year’s HVAC renovation, the Terrace Room received
a minor face lift with new lighting, a new menu featuring Nimen Ranch
meat, new Riedel crystal series stemware, along with a more relaxed style
of service. This month, with thanks to Director of Facilities Bill Ward
and his team, we will have a Wine Cellar in the Terrace Room. Be sure
to see Assistant General Manager Tony Zaranti’s article in this month’s
newsletter for more information, including some new featured wines.
February is a month to celebrate that special someone in your life.
Make sure to celebrate with us, as Executive Chef Meier has included a few
specials on the Terrace Room menu, but our big celebration in the South
Wing will feature live entertainment with an incredible menu. Look for
Alexis Groesch’s article for more information.
On Saturday, January 19 we held our second all staff training and
team building meeting. These meetings are about two hours and include
a member-recognition series, as well as team building activities. Colonial
Olympics was the theme and included contests pertaining to the proper
employee uniform, ironing a uniform shirt, listing types of white and red
wine grapes, the proper technique in opening a wine bottle, how to polish a
wine glass, proper cleaning techniques, questions pertaining to the Crowne
Plaza Invitational at Colonial, and last but certainly not least, the waiter
races where selected department heads had to put a full coffee cup, martini
glass and rocks glass on a tray and race through an obstacle course to the
finish with all items still on the tray. The interesting thing about these
events is in the beginning folks are quiet and reserved, but by the time they
leave, they are all full of energy and saying how much fun it was. Needless
to say, I believe Saturday’s meeting was a success.

this project by the end of March. You may have noticed we are re-establishing
our edge definition between the bentgrass and the bermudagrass collars on
the backside greens, which will likely wrap up by month end.
As we get closer and closer to spring, the seasonal routines of
Let me also give a heartfelt thanks to all who choose to carry their bag
or pull a hand cart during winter and spring. Colonial Country Club has
more of a traditional “walking culture” than many courses in the area and
aerification and topdressing greens will not be far behind. In February we

Seems like it was just a few years ago when no tournaments were
scheduled in February. Touted as one of the coldest months of the year,
it made sense not to schedule anything. After witnessing the warmest
year since records have been kept, I think we probably can get away with
scheduling one event this February. Even if it is too cold to play golf, you
can always shop. Yes, February is the last chance to take advantage of all the
bargains in the golf shop and with Valentine’s Day later this month, this
is a great opportunity to get something for that special person in your life,
and at a huge discount. Lastly, you should receive your pocket golf calendar
in your February statement.
This month, we have scheduled a Men’s Guest Day on February 22.
As in the past, our winter guest days have a 12:30 PM shotgun start, but
if the field fills up, you will have the option to play in the morning at 8:15
AM. Hopefully, the weather will cooperate and the tournament will go as
scheduled.
As we approach spring, we must make room for new items. The
only practical way to do this is by selling the existing items. Please take
advantage of huge discounts especially when buying that special gift for
Valentine’s Day. If you are having a hard time figuring out what to get your
loved one, come by or call one of us and we can help with some suggestions.
As I mentioned earlier, this year we are going to send out the
pocket version of the golf calendar. We have had several requests by the
membership to send these out again. 2127 You should receive them in your
February statement and if, by chance, you didn’t receive one, give us a call
and we will gladly mail it to you. I look forward to having Dr. Doug Boyd
as Chair the Golf Committee for his first time. Doug competes in almost
every tournament the club hosts, giving him the much needed experience
to chair the committee.
As the temperatures get warmer, we look forward to seeing the regular
crowd out here again and for those of you looking for a game, any of us in
the pro shop will help you join one of the many games which exist every day
at Colonial Country Club.

Tee it
up!
Maximizing distance off the tee starts with teeing the ball
at the right height. Proper tee height allows you to strike
the ball on the correct spot of the clubface. Most amateurs
tee the ball down too low. This will encourage low contact
on the clubface causing a low launch of the ball and excessive
backspin. Both of those will dramatically reduce the distance
of your tee shot. Tee the ball so half of the ball is above the top
of the clubhead. This will allow you to get under the ball and
make contact just above the center of the clubface which will
result in a high launch of the ball and more distance.

Ladies on the Links
with Shirley Turner
Who is Walter?
Who in the CWGA was born and raised in Houston, came to Fort
Worth in 1980 as a TCU freshman and bleeds purple? She played field
hockey, soccer, ran cross-country, played softball and tennis in high school
and watched her father and brother play golf. She had a hole-in-one at Mira
Vista Country Club. Can be found on the putting green listening to her
tunes. She walks fast and decisively, and encourages everyone to play and
wear purple. She is most happy with hitting from inside 100 yards because
she loves the challenge.
At night since she can’t play golf in the dark, she needle points while
sitting in her purple chair.
This is too easy!
By now you must have guessed our 2013 Chairman Kendal Perryman.
Kendal promises an exciting, fun-filled year and welcomes all lady
golfers to join the CWGA.
Our Opening Scramble is Friday, March 8, so put it on your calendar.
This is a fun day and nice opportunity for golfers of all levels to play together
then gather for lunch and laughs.
Play days for February are 1, 8, and 19. March play days are 1, 15, 26.

You enjoyed the “Healthier Option” we featured last month in the Cork
Room so much we decided to continue it this coming month to help out
with those tricky “New Year’s Resolutions.”
We are also very excited to tell you we are in the process of creating a
new spring menu for the Cork Room with a Farm-to-Table concept. We
will incorporate more local ingredients like fruits, vegetables, cheeses and
meats into the new dishes.
I hope a lot of you had a chance to taste some of our new items upstairs
in the Terrace Room and also the enhanced Fairway Lounge menu on
Friday’s and Saturday’s.
The culinary team and I are striving to offer traditional but also some
trendier items on the menus. So please be a little adventurous and give
some of the more creative dishes a try and I am sure you will be pleasantly
surprised!

staff and we will help you be successful this year.
I was inspired to write this month’s article by one
of our fitness center members. This member and I were
talking about New Year’s resolutions one day and we got
on the topic of Personal Mission Statements. Companies
large and small have them, for-profits and not-for-profits,
even Colonial has its own mission statement to help guide
them, keep them on the right path and to ensure each
day the organization is working towards success. If these
statements are powerful enough to guide a large organization, they must be a super power for individuals! Think
about it, nobody knows your struggles, goals, limitations
and dreams better than you so why not sit down and write
yours today. This is your chance to put down on paper
your new year’s resolutions in a formal statement and
make them “real.” If one of your goals is fitness or health
related, I would love for you to share them with us.

See you at the Fitness Center
1. Prepare – Sit down and put honest thoughts
on paper before you write. What do you really
want to accomplish?
2. Create a Plan – Now that you’ve written your statement, how will you execute it?
3. Enlist Friends for Support – the more people you
share your statement with, the more accountable
you will be.
4. Start Small – Baby steps

Desk or visit us online at www.colonialfw.com for reservations for this and
all our upcoming events!
Finally, we will be launching our newly re-designed website and mobile
application in a few weeks. The objective was to make our website more
user-friendly and much more streamlined. We have also added a NEW
feature – members may now pay their statements through the website! In
addition to this added feature, the Club has also taken the necessary steps
to ensure member payment information is secure, by purchasing additional
SSL encryption. I hope everyone enjoys the new look and is able to navigate
through the site much easier. Watch for more information on features, as
well as instructional workshop dates with representatives from our host
provider, ClubEssential. These workshops will show members how to
use the website effectively, as well as answer any questions you may have.
Please note, your username and password will not change in the re-design.
If you have any questions regarding the website, feel free to contact me
directly at (817) 840-2220 or [email protected].

Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial
with Michael Tothe, Tournament Director
[email protected]
Wanted to share with you our full committee structure. These
Members represent the heart and soul of the tournament operation. Of
course, as a Member you have the opportunity to be part of this group,
as well as volunteer. We have created a number of new committees as
our tournament business has changed over the years. In an effort to place
more focus on membership involvement a new Tournament Committee
position was created this year to help get more members involved in the
tournament. Jonathan Mock has joined the Tournament Committee to
oversee this committee.
the new workers’ schedules and provide a manageable environment for
the committee chairman.
3. Develop a leadership development program to activate members into
a leadership role on the Tournament Committee over a period of time.
4. Identify opportunities where the tournament can enhance the general
membership experience as it relates to the golf tournament.
The goals for the Membership Involvement Committee are as follows:
5. Maintain communication with the Membership Enhancement
Committee of the club so the Board and membership can be kept
informed.
1. Develop a process to activate members who want to participate in the
tournament by creating a volunteer pool of members who can give
some time to the tournament in the weeks leading up to and during
tournament week.
6. Develop and activate opportunities to communicate with members
regarding operational issues critical to the tournament affecting dayto-day club operations, especially as relates to the golf course, tennis
courts, etc.
2. Develop a flexible work schedule with various Tournament Committee
chairman to schedule workers throughout the week to accommodate
Come see us upstairs anytime if you need more information, or want to

Colonial now has a Junior Golf program! The CJGA has been growing
since November. We just completed our fifth junior golf tournament
in January. 81 Recent winners include Jacob Carson, Anthony Pope,
Olivia Neve, and Parker DuBose! Junior tournaments are scheduled
throughout the year for members as young as 6 years old up to 17
years old!
Also, if your junior golfer isn’t plugged into the junior golf training
program, now is the time to enroll. We have spots available, but
don’t wait as we expect them to fill up quickly. We offer golf training
once or twice a week depending on your preference. The 12-14 age
group meet Tuesdays, 9-11 meet Wednesdays, and the 6-8 group
meet Thursdays. If you are interested in getting your junior involved
or if you have any questions, please contact Brian Schorsten in the golf
