Dear Members:
By now many of you have enjoyed the new fitness equipment the Club
recently purchased for the 7th floor. The entire cardio section has been
replaced with new Matrix treadmills, elliptical and bikes. These machines
have incorporated the latest design to give you the most efficient cardio
workout possible.
On the strength side, where our free weights are, we have installed a line of
FreeMotion equipment that has replaced many of our older strength pieces.
The nice feature of this equipment is that it will adapt to any body size unlike
the old style of machines. Because this equipment is new we encourage you
to ask any of our fitness instructors to demonstrate the many types of exercises
you can do. Additionally, we will soon be replacing our dumbbells with new
Iron Grip pieces which is considered the top of the line in the industry.
We will soon be rearranging some of the equipment in the 6th floor fitness
room for those of you who prefer this workout room. Also on the 6th floor you
will notice the new pool deck furniture and classic photos of some of our early
swimmers and divers who trained at the Club.
I hope you are enjoying your summer and we hope to see you around the
Club.

FreeMotion Fitness
Equipment
By George Padilla
By now, those of you that frequent the seventh floor fitness area
may have noticed some “minor” changes to our strength and
circuit training areas.
The most notable change is probably
the appearance of the FreeMotion strength training equipment.
What is FreeMotion?
All human movement falls into one of the
following categories: Standing and locomotion, Raising and lowering the body’s
center of mass, Pushing and pulling, and
Rotation. That’s it! But each of us has a
different body type and unique movement pattern. There is no such thing as
the “average” LAAC Member. FreeMotion
equipment can accommodate virtually
any movement pattern.
{ 4 } july 2007
What are the benefits of using FreeMotion
equipment?
FreeMotion equipment was designed to
increase your performance in daily activities and sports performance. Sounds a lot
like “functional training” right? It sure is!
By adding resistance to these movement
patterns (Pushing, Pulling, etc.), you can
effectively train the specific muscles to
enhance that activity.
Is FreeMotion safe to use?
Absolutely! FreeMotion allows the user to
move naturally based on their body type
and movement patterns. Additionally, a
“user defined” path of movement effectively reduces stress on your joints.
What is the advantage of the FreeMotion
swivel pulley system?
The FreeMotion swivel pulley system allows
the user to engage in “3-D” movement
patterns! This increased range of motion
capability coupled with a user defined
movement pattern = better targeting
of your specific muscles and increased
recruitment of your stabilizer muscles
(“core muscles”). Simply put, training on
these machines can help you improve
your strength, agility, posture and increase
caloric expenditure for fat loss.
What is the advantage of asymmetrical
training?
Most movements in life are asymmetrical.
Think of how we walk or run. Rarely are
both limbs in contact with the ground.
In fact, when running, at some point
neither limb is in contact with the ground!
FreeMotion equipment makes unilateral
training simple. Because of the cool swivel
pulley system, you can train at the speed
that you need to keep up whether in your
sport or in your daily life!
Feel free to ask me or any of our fitness
staff for help on this equipment.

Spring
Volleyball
League
The Spring Volleyball league ended with an exciting match
between captains Sehyung Kim’s and Frank Shin’s teams.
Although both teams were missing key players, the remaining
people scrambled to play an intense game. Kim’s excellent
setting and smart court placement paired with teammate
Dan Rhee’s tough hitting made them formidable opponents.
However, they were no match for Shin’s relentless attacks and
Denise Kattan’s consistent digging. Shin’s team ended up
winning the championship in two games. Please join us for more
exciting volleyball action during open gym every Tuesday night
from 6-8 on the 6th floor gym.
Golf
Club
The Los Angeles Athletic Golf Club kicked off the summer
with a fun day at Scholl Canyon Golf Course. After five weeks
of personalized lessons from golf pro and club member Kevin
Norwall, several new golfers joined some seasoned golf
enthusiasts for a doubles scramble on June 9th. New members
Kevin Corrigan and Lisa Maurath teamed up to play a great
front nine holes, but pulled up a little short on the back nine
and could not catch leaders Bill Turner and Len Therrien,
who finished at even par. Turner also won the Longest Drive
competition and Greg Maradei bested everyone to collect
his prize for Closest to Pin. Everyone had a great time and
would love to get together for a weekly outing. To join other
club members, meet up with the Golf Club every first Thursday
of the month in the Third Floor Bar. Or Email Claudia Choi at

How long have you been a
member at The Club?
the numerous amenities The Los Angeles Athletic Club offers, my
family too can enjoy the facilities while I complete my workout.
It seems forever, the staff
here has been awesome
and
very
friendly!
Everyone greets you as if
you are family. I love the
atmosphere, even though I
just joined in May of 2007.
What major changes and improvements have you noticed with
yourself in doing the program?
Lots! For beginners, I have lost five pounds and two waist sizes.
The program really works. I have received numerous compliments
from family and friends about my weight loss. I have a lot of
energy in the mornings and just recently gave my gardener his
final check. I will be mowing my lawn going forward. I feel great
about myself but most importantly I feel 21 again.
Tell us a

little
about
I grew up in downtown Los Angeles. I remember as kids during
the construction of The Bonaventure Hotel, we would ride the
windowless outside elevators before Arnold Schwarzenegger
made them famous. I like surfing but most recently love spending
time with my first new born Alessandra. I live in the South Bay with
my wife Lupita of six years. I work in downtown Los Angeles for a
privately held staffing company.
How did you hear about the boot camp program?
It was introduced to me by Lupe Alvarado, I always wanted to
join a program like this but could never commit. I am glad that
I stayed with the program and thank Lupe for suggesting it
to me! It has been a rewarding experience both mentally and
physically.
How long have you been doing the boot camp program?
We are approaching our last week. The program lasts six weeks
and we train three days including Saturdays. In retrospect,
I thought time was going to be a major obstacle but thanks to
{ 8 } july 2007
What advice or comments can you give to members who are
thinking or may want to join the program?
Don’t hesitate! Just do it! You will be glad you did. I promise you
that the boot camp is not your typical Full Metal Jacket jargon.
Instead it is a carefully, physically and mentally thought out
regimen that will challenge your body; nothing too extreme or
over the top. The instructor “Nacho” makes the work-outs fun
and rewarding. He cares about your well being and pushes you
to reach your full potential. I have made friends with people who
have been genuinely supportive and a pleasure to know them.
It is worth the challenge but most importantly your health will
improve. Whorah!
Boot Camp Starts September 10 through October 20
Monday and Wednesday: 6:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.
Saturday: 9:30 a.m. - 10:30 a.m.

Grainger survives
the Raneem-supreme
squash test...
By Bob Hanscom, LAAC Squash Professional
Top seed and hot favorite Natalie Grainger looked awesome in her matches,
powering through the draw and taking absolutely no prisoners at this year’s
Epstein Becker & Green WISPA World Squash Tour Event staged at The Club
over the week of June 20th to the 24th.
Those who expected a repeat performance
were to be disappointed, what they got
was a thrilling final. The young pretender,
current World Junior Champion, Raneem
Weleily of Egypt, pushed her experienced
opponent to the brink.
The pattern was set early as Raneem
opened out to 4/0 in the first. Looking
cool and unflustered the young Egyptian
now, cutting out the loose shots that were
giving Raneem the opportunity to put in
her drops or volley kills that were winning
so many points. Slowly she worked her way
back and leveled.
At 3/0 to Natalie in the third it looked as
though the match might have swung,
but just when Natalie thought she could
relax, Raneem’s magic returned. Smaller
and nimbler than her opponent, the world
junior champion was racing around court,
often doing the splits on her retrievals, and
picking off those winners again.
Another swing as Raneem took a 2/1 lead
and carried on to go 4/0 up in the third how many more twists? As it happened,
just one as Natalie picked it up again, and
Raneem’s error count started to rise.
Raneem Weleily of Egypt and Natalie Grainger
of the USA
matched Natalie for retrieving and quickly
started to show her fine array of shots.
The count in my notes for rallies a player
wins, really wins rose in Raneem’s favor
as she took the lead and went to 5/0
in the second.
Natalie was starting to impose herself more
It was still tight, 4/4, 5/5, 7/7 in the fourth
before Natalie took it on a stroke and a
tin, and she had to pull back from 2/4 in
the decider. Once she had leveled though
it was all Natalie, five ticks recorded as
however hard Raneem ran her opponent
was always there for the next one.
So, the expected end, but not quite as
expected. Natalie now prepares for the
Pan-Am Games in Rio while Raneem
heads for the World Junior Championships
in Hong Kong.
In the amateur divisions, it was the two
visiting coaches of professional players
Samantha Teran and Sarycarman Diaz,
Jose’ Angel Bacceril (#97 in the world) and
Miguel Montero, putting on a show in the
5.5 division in front of the packed gallery
which just watched the Grainger/Weleily
match. Although the rallies and games
were close and exciting, it was the higherranked Bacceril coming out ahead…
winning in three straight games.
The 5.0 division was won by LAAC member
and USC dental student Adeel Anwar
over Jay Hout. The 4.5’s saw Ron Lietch
take out Glenn Gottlieb. Steve Cubbins,
visiting from England, was victorious
over LAAC’s Geoff Thompson in a tight
4.0 fiver-gamer. Another LAAC member,
Glenn Mah, found success in the 3.5’s
when pitted against Vik Singh. The “local
favorite” match on Sunday afternoon saw
Cory Hathaway, (competing in his first
squash tournament), come out ahead in
a hard fought match over Dan Clark of
San Diego in the 3.0 division.
Many thanks to the sponsors, patrons,
committee and volunteers for helping
to organize and stage one of the most
satisfying and best-attended squash
tournaments held at The Club over these
past fifteen years.

What sort of fitness or competitive goals have you achieved with the LAAC
Masters Swim Team?
I have been told by Lelana and others that my freestyle stroke has improved
dramatically in the approximately 10 weeks that I have been participating
in the Masters Swim Classes. (Lelana reports that people have commented
on this to her also. I didn’t know that my terrible swimming style was such a
topic of conversation!) I have also noticed that my pace is faster and my
endurance has improved. I still have a lot to learn. - Patrick Moran
What sort of fitness or competitive goals have you achieved with the LAAC Masters Swim Team?
It is hard for me to be really fit because I work, have 3 kids and a house to run, and lack enough commitment. I also have a long
commute to LA every day. But the team gets me to the pool much more often and pushes me to improve. My fitness level for
swimming is much improved and my freestyle stroke is more efficient. - Laura Gold
